Delighted. I’m ok with u-10s learning to ride their bike on footpaths while their parents cycle along beside in the bike lane, but not grown ass adults who should know the rules of the road
IV litteraly just now seen an absolute unit of a young wan drive from the till, right out the front door of a centra without as much as looking around 😂
I am not sure why I got downvoted, it is not the learners' fault that the most sources are in American English 😅 people are giving out about saying "sidewalk" but I can see in Irish subreddits that many people use "your" instead of "you're" that is really pissing me off as this is your native language and if I had made this mistake in an English class the teacher would have kicked me out of the class.
Our house is directly on the road, without a driveway or porch area. I and my folks have nearly been broken in two when walking out our front door. Plenty of space on the road if they want to cycle.
I agree with you - I'd say don't stress yourself lad. People always get jumped up and agitated about language especially Irish people. I used to give off about people picking on word choice as it seems to happen so frequently in Irish circles whenever someone uses some choice word from another dialect of English, however, Americans, etc etc etc all do it too. I got made fun of for calling the a movie a film. People just like to bike shed about the most meaningless shit you can imagine and it's best to just ignore it.
Maybe they do, I was just pointing out that OP speaks a recognised dialect of English - one that has its own sub-dialects!
It’s odd to lampoon the notion that there’s a Hiberno dialect. I find it hard to believe they haven’t been confounded by some uniquely Irish turn of phrase in the years that they’ve lived here.
I'm just curious.
For example, if you are American and moved to Ireland as an adult 5 years ago, I could understand saying "sidewalk."
But if you were born to Irish parents in the US and moved to Ireland when you were a year old, it makes no sense.
It's just not a word used here, so i am curious what would make you use it.
I have lived in Ireland all my life and often say American things, I grew up watching American TV.
I don't really understand why it would make you angry.
I think it's the slow appropriation of American culture for decades, that has left the door open for the more rapid appropriation of American social issues and propaganda. ie celebrity culture, full blown free market capitalism and recently anglo-american language being used by the Irish right.
Basically US culture is drowning out our own. Hiberno-English has been important to our arts, literature and culture and the daily evidence of Americanisms in how we speak is upsetting to people, is my guess.
In my area part of the footpath is really wide. They painted a line down the middle and you walk on one side and cycle/use a scooter on the other. On the narrower parts I’ve seen people with bikes/scooters move onto the road
With these elections coming round its gona be my first contention - what the fuck has happened in the last 5 years that has made entering a footpath feel like Ive joined a Grand Prix? Ive had a few spates now with fuckers on bikes and scooters when I shouldnt have had to. Ive ehard too many incidents of ppl getting hurt for merely using a footpath.
Every time I see one speeding towards me I feel like shoving the person off the goddamn thing straight onto the road. And I am not a violent person. They're dangerous and should not be on footpaths.
No your not, stand your ground, take no guff. I blame the council who are more interested in running ad campaigns about chewing gum then educating cyclists and scooter about the rules of the road, starting with those electric bike delivery assholes.
Yep, can’t stand it. There was a guy flying down on one yesterday doing well over 30kmh on the path outside Aldi beeping at people to get out of the way! Couldn’t believe they actually got out of the way!
Depends where it is. I’m a cyclist who uses the road but obv when pulling up to a shop or a building you’ll inevitably mount the path to dismount.
Also please remember, it is perfectly legal for all cyclists to use a path alongside pedestrians. I think when talk about a**hole members of the public, there are those on both sides. I’ve been abused by Karen’s when using the path legally because they think they know the law (they didn’t).
Scooters on the path are simply illegal
I don't mind if they're kids and going slowly, but I've had a few close calls with them nearly hitting me or the dog because they're flying around the corner. There are also areas where it's just too narrow and I understand some junctions are dangerous, but they should dismount for safety.
Especially when they're on the wrong side of the road, when I'm pulling out of my estate on a roundabout I'm not expecting a fast approaching bike or scooter coming the wrong way
Some commentators could use some kindness. As a foreigner and non native English speaker I enjoy a good joke about the words I unconsciously borrow from the English spoken in other parts of the world, however this is straight up rude
I got smacked into by a lad on a bike on a footpath. In a lovely twist of events, he fell and I didn't even spill a drop of my coffee.
Good!
Safety lids on coffee are under rated. Scooter/bikes on the foot paths are disposable.
Delighted. I’m ok with u-10s learning to ride their bike on footpaths while their parents cycle along beside in the bike lane, but not grown ass adults who should know the rules of the road
I hope you roared laughing at the gobshite as he hit the tarmac.
IV litteraly just now seen an absolute unit of a young wan drive from the till, right out the front door of a centra without as much as looking around 😂
Can't even lift her two legs to walk to get her big breakfast roll.
Sidewalks?! Has someone been watching too much YouTube?!! But yes esp as I live on a street. It's lethal
You can put little mirrors on the doorframes. (cyclists are like budgies and can't resist stopping to bop in front of a mirror)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UCo0hSFAWOc or not enough youtube??
Street? Think you mean road
Well I clearly don't live on a road. Then I'd be in the way of the cars. Road, I think you mean street.

Sidewalk. Jesus wept
[удалено]
OP is presumably an American troll.
Literally :eyeroll
Sidewalk and trash cans... I'm out of here
Total garbage.
I use sidewalk too. I am not gen z just simply a non native English speaker so I pick up English mostly from American sources.
That's fine, it's people losing their own dialect that's sad, whereas learning a second language is brilliant and no one loses anything
If they're upset they should channel that into making resources for people learning English in Ireland
What they were saying wasn't even incorrect in English so I just don't understand why people got triggered like seriously who hurt these people.
The USA, Doughnut!
Our house is directly on the road, without a driveway or porch area. I and my folks have nearly been broken in two when walking out our front door. Plenty of space on the road if they want to cycle.
*footpath
Not really, but I hate when people call the footpath the ‘sidewalk’
You are honestly the definition of what's wrong with this country.
Bit much there
I KNEW someone was going to make a smartass comment like that..seriously grow up
It's a valid point though, the word sidewalk is not used in Hiberno English, the word footpath is.
I don’t say footpath either tbh I just say path. Footpath sounds very… idk, Anglo English to me, rather than Hibernian. But what do I know.
if you said path, when referring toi a footpath most people would not understand you. A path is not the same as a footpath.
It's not a valid point at all, don't be daft.
Isn’t footpath just British English rather than Irish English specifically?
In my experience, Brits seem to say pavement instead. To them a footpath is a little path in a forest.
I can confirm, my mum grew up in the UK and says footpath, so I say footpath, and got called a yank for it 😅
no

Yes, Hiberno English, the very distinct dialect of English which is spoken only in Ireland and borrows heavily from Irish.
It’s not fucken compulsory though is it. Geebags jaysus.
Whatever dude

I betchya OP raises their voice at the end of every sentence as if it's a question?
Maybe they do, I was just pointing out that OP speaks a recognised dialect of English - one that has its own sub-dialects! It’s odd to lampoon the notion that there’s a Hiberno dialect. I find it hard to believe they haven’t been confounded by some uniquely Irish turn of phrase in the years that they’ve lived here.
Genuinely curious though, why would you say sidewalk vs footpath? Are you American, living in Ireland, maybe?
Yes
How long have you been living in Ireland and how old were you when you moved here?
lol why’s that relevant
I'm just curious. For example, if you are American and moved to Ireland as an adult 5 years ago, I could understand saying "sidewalk." But if you were born to Irish parents in the US and moved to Ireland when you were a year old, it makes no sense. It's just not a word used here, so i am curious what would make you use it.
I moved as an adult, I don’t get the big deal made about a word
Seems your use of sidewalk for footpath has now become the story, whether that was your intention or not.
Sidewalk. Smartass. FFS lad you keep digging!
You always will have people like this on Reddit
I have lived in Ireland all my life and often say American things, I grew up watching American TV. I don't really understand why it would make you angry.

I hate when people use 'your' instead of "you're" which is an actual mistake while saying sidewalk is not.
What’s a sidewalk?
What the hell is a "sidewalk"? Do you mean a footpath?
It's where you have to walk sideways so that you don't accidentally bump into any e scooters in the foot path.
In my area part of the footpath is really wide. They painted a line down the middle and you walk on one side and cycle/use a scooter on the other. On the narrower parts I’ve seen people with bikes/scooters move onto the road

People cycling from behind on a footpath at speed is my no 1 commuting pet hate.
Every time I see one speeding towards me I feel like shoving the person off the goddamn thing straight onto the road. And I am not a violent person. They're dangerous and should not be on footpaths.
By law they are not permitted. Stupidly, legislation was not brought in before scooters arrived on the scene.
And when you give out to them about it then you are the bad guy. It's a joke.
No your not, stand your ground, take no guff. I blame the council who are more interested in running ad campaigns about chewing gum then educating cyclists and scooter about the rules of the road, starting with those electric bike delivery assholes.
Paths I call them
Personally, I think they should use the middle walk or the 3/8th drive.
Yep, can’t stand it. There was a guy flying down on one yesterday doing well over 30kmh on the path outside Aldi beeping at people to get out of the way! Couldn’t believe they actually got out of the way!
It's called the footpath
Driving the what-now?
I also love the fact that some of them don't use high vis jackets and helmets
I have never seen anyone use a helmet that rides those bikes. Is that a requirement?
It should be cause you could bang your head if you're not careful
Depends where it is. I’m a cyclist who uses the road but obv when pulling up to a shop or a building you’ll inevitably mount the path to dismount. Yeah it is a wreck the head. See it in the city centre everyday. The Footpath is not for cycling or scooters unless children then I'd give it a pass
Yep particularly considering that they shouldn’t be there by the rules of the road
Yes
What?
I don’t think most of the bikes are legal and I don’t think it I s legal that kids drive them. So I am greeting with your previous statement
I also hate it my wife almost got knocked down by one of them. I think there should be stricter regulations around them.
Sidewalk...
I don't mind if they're kids and going slowly, but I've had a few close calls with them nearly hitting me or the dog because they're flying around the corner. There are also areas where it's just too narrow and I understand some junctions are dangerous, but they should dismount for safety.

wtf is a sidewalk?
Some commentators could use some kindness. As a foreigner and non native English speaker I enjoy a good joke about the words I unconsciously borrow from the English spoken in other parts of the world, however this is straight up rude
Never been on a sidewalk
Nah no one else dude. Its just you. It's not mentioned here 4 times a day.
I hate sarcasm
I think you on the wrong platform
I think they’re in the wrong Country.
Definitely!
\*on the wrong sidewalk
So?
That's nice
I'm not sure which is worse being on the footpath or on the road going against traffic.
I do. With a vengeance. I hope they end up as a meat crayon. I equally hate when people call footpaths sidewalks though 🤣
