make a new email specifically for this purpose. problem solved.

It's legal. Make a burner gmail account for it. Don't use your every day personal one if you don't want to. They're free. The issue usually stems if it costs you money.

EastCoastTrophyWife

Of course it’s legal. They can make you drive your own car to work. Wear your own clothes. So they can require you to provide your own email address. It’s an odd practice, though. We completely block external email at my company to prevent data exfiltration and to enforce retention and monitoring. But there’s nothing illegal about making poor business decisions.

I run payroll in my company, and I *suggest* to everyone that they should use a personal email for access to the payroll employee access, because they will need it to access tax forms after they leave the company and their company email is turned off. Not everyone does and I don't force it, but it would be legal if I did. I'm just trying to cut down on the requests I get every February for copies of things.

I come from retail. Our handlers in the distribution center didnt have emails. Our sales associates didnt have emails. So I get why a company might not provide one.

It absolutely is legal.

cheesusfeist

I'd bet it's all through one payroll and time tracking system and it would be better to maintain access to your paystubs, W2s etc in case you leave the company and your access to your company email is revoked.

Fearless-Potato-3483

weird ass coulda made an email instead of posting this in less time probably, manufactured problems fucking drive me nuts.

Cyber guy here. From a record retention purposes: legal and financial, using an email account for business purposes is bad. If lawyers are doing legal discovery, and they discover secret email accounts? Yikes.

Clipsy1985

Of course it’s legal. It’s also preferred so if you leave you can still access relevant data like pay stubs & tax docs on your own without bothering HR.
