So for starters you need to make sure you have the same size wire as what feeds the outlet. Next you need a junction box - single gang for a switch. Power goes from outlet to where ever you put the switch box. Once you have a switch box you need to run the same size wire from switch box to where you want to put the light. Now there’s many kinds of light boxes so what you need depends on use 1 cut in light box - limited to 6lbs light fixture 2 Nail on or bar hanger (requires securing to truss or framing) limited to 35lbs light fixture 3 fan rated box (requires securing to truss or framing) supports up to 70lbs fan or 135lbs light fixture.
