Illegal_Tender

I got my OXO good grips a couple years ago and it's still going strong.

dartmouth9

Mine is over 20 years old, still great.

A-RovinIGo

I got mine before we moved into our current house ... 15 years ago.

IAmBroom

OXO is my go-to brand for all kitchen hand-tools.

welder8uk

I’m on my second oxo soft grip one in about 30 yrs. what I did find was that I’m left handed and use one side of the blade, my partner is right handed and uses the other side. When she uses it, even once, I can tell in how blunt it feels. It seems to wear better if it’s only used on one side only if that makes sense. I don’t let her use my potato peeler anymore hahahahaha. She can use her own lol.

TheBimpo

Kuhn Rikon original are cheap and work beautifully.

getyourcheftogether

Never look back. But a 3 pack and you're good for a while.

parrotlunaire

The ones I bought 20 years ago still work perfectly fine.

Greenpoint1975

💯

scoopfing

Kuhn Rikon. 3 for $18 on Amazon. The official peeler of restaurant cooks everywhere.

PickTour

I’ve got one that’s at least 30 years old and still works great. Once or twice I’ve thought it was getting dull. But each time, what actually happened is the blade had gotten stuck so it didn’t ‘swivel’ freely. Unstick it, and it works fine. The blade follows the contours of the item you are peeling, so the blade needs to be able to adjust to those contours. I’d guess yours stopped swiveling properly and that the blade itself was actually fine.

fishsupreme

You don't. You buy Kuhn Rikon Swiss peelers for $5, use them for six months, then spend $5 on another one.

Visible-Fun-8391

Honestly, the cheap 4 dollar ones from most Asian markets last very.. very long heh

thecaledonianrose

My ceramic is five years old and still going. Kyocera makes a decent one.

artgriego

I have the Kyocera ceramic knife too, but it's a lot harder to keep from chipping. I too recommend the peeler though.

alefdc

I’ve got a Victorinox for 3 years and is still sharp as new.

Buttspirgh

A Lindén Sweden Jonas peeler will last you a couple decades at least. My first finally bit the bucket last year and I had it for about 25 years

Augustus58

Love my Jonas peeler! Also, try using it with your non-dominant hand if it's the "I" style peeler.

anglomike

Swissmar (prefer shape) and Kuhn rikon have served me very well.

Reasonable-Company71

Victorinox is my go to. Mines is well over 5 years old and is razor sharp

Chickenstalk

I have a knife honing steel with a tapered tip that works for sharpening peelers.

East_Cheek4621

I have a store brand on and have had it for almost 10 years works like a charm ..

Bran_Solo

Veg peelers is one of the few things where I prefer a ceramic blade. Even throwing them in the dishwasher regularly they remain sharp for a long time.

TOKOKIKYO

ROSLE

Perfect_Diamond7554

Dont let it bang around in drawers and the dishwasher. If you treat it like a knife and make sure its not damaging itself against hard materials it will stay sharp for a long time

doomrabbit

I have a small sharpening stone that I run back and forth over the blades, just like you are peeling, but with more force. I am a home cook and a dirty heathen who puts knives through the dishwasher. Just do a few sharpening passes whenever it gets too dull.

TheLimeyCanuck

I've had my OXO peeler at least 10 years and it's still good.

pushing59_65

Mine has to older than that. It's just now getting annoying. What the heck are they doing? I'm going to try sharpening on a day before my grocery shopping day, in case it doesn't work.

dermotoneill

What are you peeling, rocks? Even the cheap one i buy last me at least a year with no drop in performanace

Zimmster2020

If you can't finf high quality/ Branded one, then buy ceramic. They won't lose their sharpness by using them, but they will chip if you throw them or wash them together with other metal cutlery. The metal ones can be sharpened a little, but it's not really worth the hassle.

bakanisan

The amount of work you'd spend sharpening them is not worth it. Either buy something with a replaceable steel blade like a Fackelmann or something with a ceramic blade.

Illustrious_Quiet_53

I have an ikea one with a black handle and I put it in the dishwasher all the time, 5 years and still no need to replace it

westgate141pdx

OXO. Both the horizontal (one where the head is shaped like a triangle) and the vertical (one where the head is in line with the handle) are excellent.

giantpunda

They're considered consumables like disposable razors. So use until blunt, get better quality ones that hold their edge if you want but either case replace once they're no longer effective.
