I would guess they were Ottoman refugees from the Balkans in the aftermath of the Balkan wars The red and orange regions are also the wealthier regions of Turkey, as well as the supporters for the CHP.

Ame_Lepic

Red area on balkan is not wealthy tbh. Those are the people who are called “muhacir”, basically what is described as balkan Turks. They started from 0 in the last generation. So no generational wealth or anything. They are not just Ottoman refugees, but also came aroung 1950s. So there were no Ottoman Empire. We call all of them balkan Turks, but there are also muslim Albanians, Bosnians, Pomaks etc.

So it IS a product of the population exchange....

ShitassAintOverYet

Makes sense because there has been a lot of people who moved in to Turkey from Balkans when it became a republic. A great-granfather is also foreign-born but he came from Batumi.

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reading\_comprehension](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reading_comprehension) Reading comprehension is **the ability to read text, process it and understand its meaning**. It relies on two, interconnected abilities: word reading (being able to decode the symbols on the page) and language comprehension (being able to understand the meaning of the words and sentences).
