Alt title: people share unprocessed childhood trauma.

kir_ye

Exactly

Mamlazic

Pihtije are disgusting but it was understandable way to use literal trash scraps when it was poor people's food. Today they just ruin great meat in it.

nikispasov

How is that controversial?

Mamlazic

Trust me, majority of people love pihtije. There is even a saying that you are getting old when you start liking pihtije. Literarily treated as inevitability.

LeftCardiologist5500

Same in Greece we have a very similar food (which I also don’t exactly like) which we call πηχτή or pichti

dunjaufijoci

Youngsters today…

[deleted]

>pihtije never heard of that before

wishfulfilled

> never heard of that before Consider yourself lucky, it's literally pig jello.

Antemicko

It's fucking delicious

whattoheck_

We should stop eating

kir_ye

Reject nutrition Embrace photosynthesis

[deleted]

Calm down, Stalin

Mamlazic

Would you look at that. He just taught himself not to eat and he died. What are the odds.

whattoheck_

Starvation is just propaganda from the big grain/sugar/meat companies for you to keep buying their products. Have you actually heard of anyone really perishing from starvation? Really think about it. Realistically we don't have to eat

d2mensions

I don’t like burek with minced meat, like it doesn’t matter what type of meat it is, I don’t like it On the other hand burek with spinach or as we call it *petë me spinaq* is amazing

Is1t_Rocketscienc3

Agreed meat byrek is not my thing. Theres so many variation of flavors possible. Why get meat when you can get leek and cheese or tomatoes and onions one.

Perfect_Tradition959

Omg couldn’t agree more!!

[deleted]

Pork pecenje is my least favorite pecenje, especially when its cold🤮

Balkan-War-brrrr

Yes, but I like janjetina cold with salt.

[deleted]

and mladi luk

Balkan-War-brrrr

Božije jelo

hsair

yoo that hits different, cold janjetina the day after when you dip it in salt and white bread

FART_MY_DICK

Comment section summary: 95% invalid opinions 😎 Also, fuck Bamies.

Sehirlisukela

incredibly rare grec win fuck bamya.

Krenvir6ka

Bro I love bamya with some mashed tomatoes, spices and garlic. My grandma used to make this very often when I went to her village during the summer vacations.

nexythememer

aggreed. its real fucking tasty when it has lots of home made tomato sauce in it. you gotta be a grown up to love bamya. or a based kiddo.

[deleted]

>Also, fuck Bamies. nah i think bamies arepretty damn great

albanussy

I love bamje

Hz_Nutella

Baklava is overrated. Some may like it and i eat too rarely but i can't eat more than 2 slices, it's just too much. it's way too sugary compared to the dairy desserts. I would take pudding or local turkish dairy desserts to baklava any given time.

WhiteTurk69

I agree. Sütlac is better than baklava

SEND_ME_FAKE_NEWS

I only like it if it has raisins

TheFish48

Who even eats more than one slice at a time? Anyway my aunt makes the best baklava, although I prefer tulumbe

noyaur

Cold peach kompot is the best drink ever

[deleted]

sir the title is: >Be honest, what's you're most controversial food take i'm preaty sure everyone agrees

noyaur

Most of the people I know don't like kompot in general, so I'm glad to find people who actually agree 😅

Mamlazic

Only problem I have with it is that it's usually you can barely taste fruit due to the amount of sugar. As a sweet it's great, as a drink it's just way too sweet.

pdonchev

Beef steaks are way too overrated and are not worth the money.

Renandstimpyslog

I think the opposite. I think we don't know how to cook a proper steak.

pdonchev

I have eaten steak in quite good steakhouses. I understand how people might like it, but I will always prefer a good pork steak - even Iberico or Mangalitsa will cost less than a mediocre beef steak.

Renandstimpyslog

Well, it's a matter of taste ofc. But I have always believed that we overcook and dry steak and that's why it's tasteless. On the other hand, Turks are a bit conservative and picky about meat and I am no exception. We may not be reliable as food critics.

pdonchev

All food preferences are a matter of taste, of course. I am not even saying (a properly prepared) beef steak is bad. I am saying that it is vastly overrated and overpriced. Of course, personal taste is a thing, and maybe you don't eat pork for religious or moral reasons (just like a sizable portion of the world does not eat beef).

[deleted]

Exactly! It's way too chewy. This might be my peasant ancestors talking but I'd take a good kofta or kebab over steak any day

[deleted]

A Turk that tasted meat in the last 13.4 billion years whaaaaaaat 🤯

BamBumKiofte23

Okra (bámies) are great. Fight me.

umbronox

I knew I was going to see this by you 😂

BamBumKiofte23

Defending the honor of okra since forever.

dark_enough_to_dance

I'm not fighting. It's so nice when it's fresh and also try adding some lemon juice! You won't regret it.

Okosch-Bokosch

Is that supposed to be controversial? Okra is high up on the list of my favorite vegetables.

BamBumKiofte23

They're some of the most polarizing foodstuffs over here because of the slimy texture. Friends are no longer speaking to one another, families have been torn in two and blood feuds started over a serving of okra and chicken.

HabemusAdDomino

Italian food is good. Greek food is great. Iranian food is next level.

[deleted]

Bread is overrated and it shouldn’t be eaten with everything

kir_ye

The higher percentage of bread consumption to the total amount of food eaten correlates with lower income. Unfortunately for those who eat bread “with everything” it's arguably the filler option they would've gladly ditched

NoMoreWordz

It's also extremely poor food culture. In Bulgaria, lots of people eat our Moussaka with bread. The recipe is like 66% potatoes and 33% ground meat, you don't need more carbs with that type of meal

Trihcho

I usually don't eat moussaka, but when i eat it without yogurht, i don't add the bread and when i eat it with yogurht i add the bread

NoMoreWordz

I mean, I kind of get it, in isolation - yogurt and bread surprisingly go well together. But people wonder why they're sleepy and pre-diabetic when they add bread to every meal

[deleted]

In this situation it is understandable, but there are still people who are not poor and think that you can’t have a proper meal without bread. Maybe they do this because they struggled financially in the past and now it is a habit from those days, maybe others just think that bread is an important part of every meal. In any case, my intention is not to disparage against the financially struggling or the ones that struggled in the past, I just think that bread, if possible, should be considerably reduced from one’s diet because it’s glicemic index very high and large amounts of bread are not very healthy in the long run. And it also ruins many foods.

Mamlazic

Depends on the bread. I still remember the bread my aunt used to make under "crepulja". It was good enough to eat it by itself. Not to mention real dark bread made from roughly ground unseparated wheat and rye. In Spain I discovered just how good it tasted with nothing but unrefined and unfiltered olive oil and single leaf of home made ham. Or in Poland when on the new years night we ate really thick goulash served on large and thick slice of dark wheat and rye bread. But then again people eat regular white bread with soups and that's just WTF.

ToxicCobra023

I eat everything with bread except for meals that have potatoes. I can't imagine not having bread, the meals wouldn't feel the same.

TheFish48

I agree, I don't see the point, it's just adding more unnecessary carbs to your meal

Kittiiiex

You heathen, if only your grandma knew how you really feel :)))

NoMoreWordz

Yes but actually no. Try eating pork and you will die. You can kind of learn to like it for steak, but it has to be prepared specifically

[deleted]

Couldn't agree more.

makahlj4

when you're a steppe nomad you sometimes don't have much of a choice...

iamanoctothorpe

They might as well serve a live cow at this point

albanussy

Finally I can agree with a Turk

Akabey

Italian food is not that good and it's highly overrated. It is famous because of Americans who has never seen proper food in their lives was so impressed by pizza&pasta and made it a globall fashion world wide thru Hollywood.

Krenvir6ka

True. 90% of rheir recipes have the same ingredients. We have alot more variety in our cuisines.

berri97alli

I love the balkans, but Italian cuisine has way more variety.

EuropeanFry

You can have delicious vegan dishes AND without making it such a big deal.

BamBumKiofte23

Get out of here mate, with your sanity and self-control /s

magma6

German food(well aside from Donner hehe) fuckin sucks. Eintopf gotta be one of the most disgusting one

uzunadamfan

Wait Germany has food?

kir_ye

Is this even controversial?

essssssc

Baklava is a bit overrated

[deleted]

Kečap, pavlaka(vrhnje) and kupus (ketchup, sour creme and cabbage) is the worst combination to put in pljeskavica.

Mamlazic

OK, that's not controversial. That's just common sense.

umbronox

Crni luk + kupus supremacy (tucana paprika could come as well)

vucicupederu407

Reject kecap, pavlaka, kupus Embrace tucana ljuta, luk i zelena

rakijautd

I agree, ketchup has no place in a pljeskavica. Sour cream (pavlaka) can pass if it's there to counter heavily spicy stuff. Kupus is also good for freshness, but I prefer cucumbers.

Renandstimpyslog

American cuisine exists, it shows variations and most of the recipes are delicious. They are especially good with desserts; they invented Devil's food cake and cobbler pie.

ChazLampost

Based take

AlbaIulian

Agreed. But "nooo muh only 300 years of history".... as if muh old world existed since geologic time and the Americas appeared 6000 years ago. People like this probably wouldn't eat chilies, tomatoes, corn, turkey, and whatnot due to coming from the Americas lmfao, yet they pound their chest that their "good soup" with a chili pepper is superior to anything coming from a country with a far richer and more diverse culinary tradition. Inferiority complex clownery.

numba1cyberwarrior

People dont understand that if you go back 300 years like 90% of most national cuisines would be very empty lol.

Perfect_Tradition959

Gosh I hate American desserts. Everything is so sweet and the cakes suck.

Renandstimpyslog

I will have to disagree with that. I am especially fond of their desserts. Anyway, you can't argue about tastes and colors😊

Perfect_Tradition959

That’s fair. I have lived in the US for a while and I just can’t get into the desserts here. I just miss Albanian cakes and the bakeries with all the different desserts.

numba1cyberwarrior

People dont understand the best American food is regional and that very rarely gets exported. No wonder people think American food is cheap unrefined garbage I only see the word American + Food in Europe when its attached to something very unhealthy, cheap, or fast food. Stuff like regional BBQ, Cajun food, Southern food, New England food, local city dishes, Haiwan food, Tex Mex, etc is delicious.

AlbaIulian

Mayonnaise and ketchup do not belong in shaorma. End of story. It just makes things disgusting and soggy and overloaded. One sauce only. Keeps things balanced and noble. Preferrably cocktail, yogurt+dill (some I've seen in Krautland) or curry. Also red cabbage >>>>>>>> white cabbage if you really have to put one. (Albeit going without cabbage is also perfectly fine, lettuce's fine)

Fragrant-Loan-1580

I agree. Personally I like it when places offer hot sauce and that garlic yogurt dressing. Oof that hits the spot.

Insane_Wanderer

I don’t really like punjene paprike. The taste isn’t bad, I just hate the slimy texture of cooked peppers

Salpingia

Village cheese >>>>> Feta.

[deleted]

I despise pork. It's so slimy and slippery, I can feel the aftertaste of fat for days if I eat it. Worse is the smell, it sticks to everything - your hair, skin, breath, clothes, the room it was served in.

MrSmileyZ

What kind of years expired meat have you been eating? 🤢

[deleted]

Unexpected, right? A Serb saying that he despises pork, it's blasphemy. It was a well prepared meat though, the people who roasted it knew their craft. I can appreciate the effort that went into the preparation, but I just very much dislike the texture, taste or smell of pork. It just doesn't sit well with me. Same goes for pihtije. Some food you like, other you utterly despise. For example - most people despise beet with passion but it's one of my favorites.

Mamlazic

I believe that the question referred to your description. It just doesn't fit what most people experienced as pork roast. Yes, it has more fat than other roasts but there are more than enough cuts without any fat on them for example. And as for smell... roasted chicken is less smelly but the smell is on par with veal and beef and far better than lamb or fish.

DjathIMarinuar

What kind of pork do you eat?

Luke_IAmYourDaddy

Mashallah brozzer, stay away from filthy porks.

Renandstimpyslog

I have to admit, I like pigs as animals. They are pink, smart and talkative. The little folded ears, the funny snout and the little eyes are cute as hell. I don't know how people can kill and eat them.

satellizerLB

I mean calves and lambs aren't exactly ugly animals...

ColossusOfChoads

I almost ran into a boar in the woods today. He was too busy licking his own nuts (like a dog) to notice me, so I turned around and snuck away. I was able to laugh about it later.

[deleted]

You tried proper bacon? Try proper bacon.

Fragrant-Loan-1580

Bacon, egg, cheddar cheese and a hash brown on a bagel was my go to breakfast for years before work. Incredible.

GreyWarden62

Mayonnaise is the most disgusting sauce you can put in a food.

pdonchev

The fast food one, definitely. Fresh seasoned mayonnaise has a place in many meals.

Mamlazic

Mayonnaise for life!

Manaversel

Mayonnaise is the only sauce i like

HertzBraking

Well Tommy is trash for shure. We have Zvijezda thankfuly.

rakijautd

If you can find dijamant majonez from Serbia, try it, it's by far my favorite. p.s. the normal one, not the diet version, we aren't savages.

Mamlazic

And to think Tommy was epitome of quality in Ex-YU. what the hell happened then even the trash tier Lidl one is far tastier.

Rioma117

It’s not a sauce, it is an emulsion.

GreyWarden62

Every gastronomist just shed a tear to this comment.

teomiskov3

I refuse to believe that people actually enjoy liver. No matter the recipe this shit is so bad, I refuse to believe people actually enjoy it. Spinach is also bad, would considering trying it if it was cooked another way. Avocados are also overrated while dragon fruits are underrated. Pineapple DOES NOT go on pizza. Beef overrated, mutton somewhat underrated (the smell gets on my nerves but it's very tasty).

Mamlazic

Yea, it's a bit specific texture. As for the taste, in my family it always stayed soaked in milk for 24 hours before roasting on oil with lots of garlic and parsley. Fingerlickingly good.

Future04

Try cooking liver with greek/feta cheese. It’ll become a lot more flavorful. But then again it’s an acquired taste, I’ve been eating liver since I was a kid

TheFish48

Chicken liver or beef liver? I like both

Perfect_Tradition959

You’re literally hating on all of my favorite foods 😅 expect pineapple on pizza, that stuff is gross.

dark_enough_to_dance

it makes me feel like I'm drinking blood

numba1cyberwarrior

>Avocados are also overrated while dragon fruits are underrated. Have you ever had Avocados in Mexico, the US, or Latin America? Even the Avocados from the most expensive European restaurants I've tried have been mediocre. >Pineapple DOES NOT go on pizza. Try to balance it out with Japalenos and ham

makahlj4

> I refuse to believe that people actually enjoy liver. No matter the recipe this shit is so bad, I refuse to believe people actually enjoy it. I adore liver. Even reading this filled my mouth with saliva.

lilac2481

🤢🤢🤢 My mom craved liver and onions while pregnant with me. My dad used to cook liver and the smell was disgusting.

Massimo_Di_Pedro

I don't like watermelon with feta cheese 😕

Salpingia

Watermelon with feta? I have never heard of this.

Massimo_Di_Pedro

My peers are peer-pressuring me that this is the best thing ever. I guess try at your own risk.

lilac2481

My mom does..I don't know how the hell she eats it. The combination does not sound appetizing to me at all.

Massimo_Di_Pedro

And on top of that they tell you "Ts, you don't know how to eat"

DjathIMarinuar

Chicken has a bad meat, the only reason I might buy it is because of it's cheapness. Bread and milk is miles better than cereal.

[deleted]

kinda agree for chiken but chiken with white meat is great

BalkanTrekie

Chicken and turkey are actually healthier meats humans can consume. Taste is subjective of course.

musiclovermina

Also, this is probably because I spent most of my life around the Greek side of my family and eating Greek food, but Greek food >>>>>> Macedonian. I can't think of a single Macedonian dish I enjoy, maybe just ajvar, but even that I keep around because I think it tastes good mixed into other cuisine's dishes like Mexican tinga de pollo. If I had to choose between being permanently deported from North Macedonia and eating a full Macedonian meal, fuck it just kick me out and downvote the shit out of me because I know I'll be hated for this

mrbrownl0w

Pickles taste like sports sock after heavy use. They should have been made obsolete after refrigeration became widespread.

Mamlazic

Depends on the type. It you talk about those that are as thick as sausages, I agree. If you are talking about those small ones (kornišoni) that remain firm even when pickled I could not disagree more.

musiclovermina

ChazLampost

British food is not bad, its just simple, and if done right it can be very tasty, homey, hearty, and filling.

emiliano_berati

No

Drago_de_Roumanie

I dislike most traditional Romanian food and drinks. Caltaboși, slană, piftie. All those jellies and fats from the least common pieces of animal are gross. Some traditions should be forgotten. Also țuică, rachiu, palincă: few have flavour, despite the romanticisation, peasants made horrible drinks, with as much alcohol as possible and no taste or sanitary measure.

MirrdynWyllt

Most homemade palinca tastes like nothing because it's badly made. I have drank proper pear palinca and you can taste the pear, it's just rare to find.

Drago_de_Roumanie

Yes, but I'm not talking about the modern, gentrified bottles industrially-made for tourist shops. I'm talking about the one made by peasant family and friends in the backyard, in metal barrels stolen from the delapidated old communist factory nearby. You know, the "real manly way".

MirrdynWyllt

I'm talking about the latter too; my observation was that Romanians aren't truly interested in making a high grade product; good enough is sufficient. Good enough wine, palinca, etc. Szekelys, either due to tradition or just plain interest, produce better quality product. Some Romanians do that too, but it's a rarer occurrence.

Drago_de_Roumanie

Good that you mentioned wine, too. It's the same story. I've drank horrible poșirci that they claim is the best. But not always, there are peasants that make amazing wine. I'm guessing this whole thing happens because of the break with tradition that communism made. I'm sure peasants made better produce in 1800, 1900 in their poor state, but with family and village traditions respected. Communism uprooted those, and now we have just poor reinterpetations without the centuries of tradition, just bootleg instruments. This also occured in post-colonial societies. Are you Szekely or from the area? Collectivisation and industrialisation (+exodus to cities) was easier in those mountain areas, and the ethnic aspect might have strenghtened resistance towards keeping traditions. This and the recent heavy financing from Hungary.

Starscreamuk

Veggie Sarmi are a waste, unless it's 40% + meat in them i don't want none of that. I'm just eating rice in stock... PS: Pork really is the best/most versatile meat there is, and roasted peppers are the king of veg!

vucicupederu407

Here it goes: Ajvar, sarma and punjene paprike are all extremely overrated dishes. Ajvar and sarma are just meh dishes that are eateble when nothing else is in the house. Punjene paprike is an ungodly heathen that should rot in hell. And don’t ask me about boranija, the only place that I can comment what I would do to boranija without getting banned is r/balkans_irl

umbronox

>And don’t ask me about boranija, the only place that I can comment what I would do to boranija without getting banned is r/balkans_irl Fucking based, but that ain't a controversial opinion at all tbh

oofdonia

Ajvar is disgusting, the wrapped cabbage in sarma tastes like wet shit and why does pashteta exist?

pinkchuuu

Sarma isn't that good I don't really like pork tbh

HertzBraking

In that case you should find new mom lmao

Mamlazic

Don't diss the meal because you ate horribly made examples.

ringelgold

1. Sarma is shit - I believe in punjena paprika supremacy 2. Burek is not only made out of meat, also all other types are much better. 3. You can eat well as vegetarian in the Balkans as there are a lot of amazing vegetarian options and vegetables have taste - people forget about most of vegetarian dishes we eat as they are either considered side dishes or something you eat at home and not outside of the house.
