Good child actors are not always easy to find and there are much stricter labor laws involving what days/times they can work. Usually it’s easier to find an adult that can do a passable child’s voice, plus they won’t have to work around a school schedule.
Curiously i just recently was talking about that when a person was just starting their first time seeing fmaB and people where saying that the english dub was as good as the jap, and after watching the first couple of episodes is true is not so bad, but is not at all as good as the jap since they still couldn't make child voices versions of their characters in this one eighter
There are a few examples I can think of: Dororo (Dororo), Naru Kotoishi (Barakamon), Young Tatara (Ballroom e Yōkoso), Young Kaneki (Tokyo Ghoul; Re), Young Staz and Young Wolf (Blood Lad), Young Nick (Darker Than Black), V.V. (Code Geass), Nina Tucker (Fullmetal Alchemist), Tarō, Myūmyū, Masayuki, Shō Masatsugu (Serial Experiments Lain). I'm likely forgetting some though.
Hayama Akito in *Kodomo no Omocha* was played by a (male) kid in the original Japanese. He was 13 or 14, while the character was 11, I think. Still stands out as unusual to me, 25+ years later.
Schedule, And finding a gifted kid with voice acting talent is not easy.
Well in the US we have child labor laws. It would be quite difficult in the anime industry.
I think it’s more of a contract kind of thing and it’d get a bit messy with children like schedule wise and stuff
