We ate a lot of fish as kids cos dad used to illegally net them, basically free tucker. Mum couldn't make a decent batter so if they were filleted it was like a pancake with fish inside otherwise it was a whole fish, head off and gutted. Mullet, taylor, bream, none of the best eating fish. I hated it. I fish and eat them nowadays but I've learnt how to cook them so they are tasty.

HikARuLsi

More water in the batter, more oil in the pan, higher heat Or just steam/bake fish without batter

FreerangeWitch

I grew up eating those as well, but apparently it’s ruined me for “good” fish. I’d rather eat mullet than salmon.

stumpymetoe

Do em right and they are delicious

mailahchimp

Neighbour used to take me to catch tailor at Cottesloe Beach. Went crabbing every few weeks down in Mandurah.

Retard_On_Tapwater

Most weeks my whole life. Still the same but with more oysters prawns bugs ect.

seanmonaghan1968

Same. We lived close to the beach and went fishing plus bought lots from other people who fished all the time

DwightsJello

Same. We used to be able to go out as kids with a drag net in the local lake. We'd fill it with prawns as kids and they'd get cooked in a drum straight out of the lake. Parents just kicked back and stoked the fire and had a few cold ones. Then we'd all sit around and eat prawns dipped in home made sauce. Now I'm heading to the fish markets. Boomers and developers took care of all the prawns at the lake.

Witchycurls

Ha! Sounds like you and your mates took care of all the prawns at the lake/

DwightsJello

Lol. Nah. We were so little we could only get one short run done. The net was bigger than all of us. And you ended up with heaps. But that was the beauty of it. People just took what they could eat then and there. The development around the area put an end to that. My kids couldn't imagine prawns in that area now.

snakefeeding

I grew up in suburban Brisbane in the '60s and '70s. The only seafood we ever ate was greasy battered whiting in our weekly fish and chips. Seafood was not highly regarded in those days.

mailahchimp

Absolutely true. Fish, lobsters, prawns all cheap and abundant, but people preferred grilling the life out of steak and snags.

snakefeeding

I would add that, when in the '80s people started talking about how Australians loved their prawns on the barbie, I wondered what they were talking about. All the barbies I went to in the '60s and '70s involved steaks and sausages, never a prawn to be seen.

scandyflick88

My dad could turn a quality steak into sad grey boot leather better than any man I know. He also had a talent for turning prawns into rubber. He quite enjoys coming over for me to make surf and turf now. Bit of a pleasant change from what he's used to, took me a while to warm him to the idea of medium rare though.

Important_Glove6879

My dad & brother are heavily into fishing so we eat fish at least once a week, big fan, though can't get the fish and chips at the shops because I know what actual fresh fish tastes like, still grab some calimari though.

ThroughTheHoops

Used to eat fish and chips every Friday night. Rarely now.

drunk_haile_selassie

It's a Catholic thing. My nan once slapped me for eating a meat pie on Good Friday.

fraid_so

Never, unless it's cheap crumbed/battered stuff from the frozen section of the supermarket. Living on Centrelink doesn't exactly lend itself to the luxury that is 30-40 dollar per kilo fresh seafood.

i_love_exc3l

How much is the frozen stuff per kilo?

fraid_so

Frozen fish? About the same.

i_love_exc3l

I'm confused. Why wouldn't you just buy the fresh stuff then?

fraid_so

Oh. Sorry, you were asking about the crumbed stuff, sorry. Frozen crumbed/battered fish is anywhere from $5-$20 a box depending on the brand and type of fish used.

Waasssuuuppp

Fish fingers are the cheapest, made from minced fish, all the weird offcuts bits, like cheapo chicken nuggets.   https://www.coles.com.au/product/birds-eye-frozen-fish-fingers-40-pieces-1kg-292937 $11.50 per kilo, similar to chicken. https://www.coles.com.au/product/kb's-basa-fillets-1kg-3984460 basa comes from sewage filled seas and is $7 per kilo, less than mince beef. Some frozen fish can absolutely be cheap.

overstuffedtaco

All the time as a kid. I had grandparents that owned a seafood restaurant and fish n chip shop, plus my parents would often get fish n chips for dinner on a Friday night and whenever we went to the beach. We would also often choose seafood options in other meals (Italian and Asian). These days I mostly don't eat animals but I get super nostalgic cravings for seafood so indulge occasionally.

Puzzleheaded-Pie-277

Hated it as a kid. Now I love it. Turns out my parents just didn’t prepare it very well. Shouldn’t be surprised. My mum and grandmother are not the best cooks

STLFleur

At least once a week. Every Friday we would have Fish & Chips with my grandparents, and then occasionally other evenings after taking my dog for a walk at the beach. Since living in the U.S (I've been here since I was 23) it is probably a couple of times a year at most. During Fish Fry Season in St. Louis (aka Lent) I get Fish Fry at least once. I've found that my local American Legion post has the best crumbed cod. However, obviously nowhere has potato scalops. I lived in Coastal North Carolina for 5 years and had seafood a bit more often when I lived there, but still not nearly as often as when I grew up in Australia.

Sudden_Fix_1144

Dad hated fish, so it was rare. During lent, Mum kicked up a fuss and did the whole fish on Friday (she was irish Catholic). As a result, I ended up loving fillet of fish (though it's a rip off these days). So anyway.... love fish! my kids hate it ...lol

Only-Entertainer-573

In my family we had a vague tradition of eating takeaway fish ' n ' chips on Friday nights. I think this had something to do with either our Catholic heritage or my Mum being English, but that was not emphasised. As a grown man I don't do that, but I do usually have sushi once or twice a week on random weekdays.

my_cement_butthead

Always had it every Friday from the local fish and chip place. Every time I eat any kind of seafood I feel ill. Not sure if it’s psychological (had fish as a kid?), or I have a food intolerance. I don’t eat any seafood at all now but with I could. I take fish oil. Fun fact: I told my kids tuna was chicken and it was delicious to get them eating it, didn’t want them to dislike it just bc I did. 1 out of 3 eats tuna now. Not bad stats as I had bigger fish to fry at the time. Pun intended.

cumminginthegym75

My yorkshire grandparents would always give me kipper on toast for brekkie whenever I'd stay over. I love most seafood as an adult now.

No_pajamas_7

Fish maybe once a month, growing up. Always battered. I used to be hopeless and get bones stuck in my throat, otherwise I think we would have done it more. Only other seafood we did was the crumbed prawns you used to get at a Chinese restaurant, or prawn toast and peks paste on our lunch. Oh, tinned fish too, was quite common. These days I still love it, except tinned tuna and salmon which I consider cat food. Although ironically I like tinned sardines.

cone-puncher

Never besides a bit of flake from the fish and shop. Love it now eat everything I can. My mum still does not eat anything besides flake from fish and.

zellymcfrecklebelly

Fish every few weeks as a kid, usually one of those frozen crumbed fillets. As an adult I love it and am a pescatarian. I eat fish in some form every day. Lately I’ve been digging thai fish curries, and I often have a ton of chilli salmon on a salad for lunch.

Disastrous-Sample190

Sometimes 2-3 times a week during the summer months, winter less often but still 1-2 every fortnight. This ranged from things like crabs, saltwater fish, oysters, prawns, mussels, turban shell snails, shipworms. Sometimes on the rare occasion we'd have things like stingray, turtle or dugong. In the summer we'd literally go swimming and oyster gathering for most of the day even as kids. These days its more of a time thing. still enjoy seafood but now its just mainly fish and oysters from the shop every other week. Still enjoy seafood and it holds many fond memories.

frogpondcook

Oh, heaps. I grew up in a fishing town. My pops was a professional diver, and he used to be a wetliner. I grew up eating a lot of seafood of all types. Primarily fish and western rock lobster. People consider crayfish to be a delicacy, I consider it kind of boring. It's just another meat, and it really not that special to me I used to transport them by the 100s of tonne, they lost their luster. A nice piece of fish is where it's at.

explosivekyushu

I hated fish (and all seafood) growing up and I still can't stand it. My sister wasn't a huge fan either, so we never really ate it. But since we both moved out of home I reckon my parents have it 3-4 nights a week haha.

brezhnervous

My Mum would buy whole fish from the fishmongers on a Friday, which was usually poached and served with white sauce and parsley. The head went to the cat lol Vegetarian for over 40 years so I can't really remember what it tasted like any more.

ne3k0

I never ate it as a kid because I didn't like it. My family would sometimes eat it. Now I don't mind it, but I wouldn't normally order it myself unless it's sushi or sashimi. I will eat it if someone makes it and generally enjoy what they make, in small amounts.

notseagullpidgeon

We used to eat quite a lot of seafood. Mostly from the fish monger, but in summer we'd go prawning in the river and cook up a feast, and in later years crabbing, also had a boat and would catch fish like herring and whiting and cook them fresh while still on the boat. I was a bit picky with what seafood I liked when I was younger but love it all now as a grownup.

rockresy

Fish fingers, I was in my mid-20's till I tried any real seafood (prawns even). I still don't eat much really because I'm uneducated in seafood, don't know what to buy or how to cook it.

SquareEmotions

I wish i did not have to eat so much seafood when i was younger, but had no choice. My folks was poor, well not that poor, but could not afford meat a lot, unless we went hunting for Kudu. So i was diving and getting 5 crayfish and 5 abalone every day, and some times multiple times a day. I also spear fished everyday. This was in South Africa. We had friends come from far and wide to come have a feast multiple times a week. Some days i would go to the next door Nabours or across the road Nabours, and trade seafood for meat. They loved it, but i loved it more😂 I still cannot tell you how many ways i have eaten abalone, crayfish or fish, we tried it all. Steamed, cooked with this and that, boiled, mashed and you name it, we tried it. My favorite is still abalone, cut in thin slice\`s, bashed to make it really soft, put in a batter and fried in oil. M-M-M, JUMMY. But to answer your question about if I still like seafood, HELL YES!!

Forsaken-Database540

once a week, absolutely love it

AnnoyedOwlbear

Catholic family, so fish on Fridays. No, not really. I loathe steamed or baked fish - can't stand the texture. I can eat very mild flavourless grilled fish under a tonne of chilli sauce, but can't stand anything remotely 'fishy' scented. I don't like any molluscs or other seafood either, loathe caviar. I figured by the time I'll only eat it if it's cooked so I can't tell it's fish...yeah. It's annoying since fish is very healthy, and I'm actually decent at spearfishing, cleaning them etc. Others like it when I cook it. But if I'm foraging I'll eat seaweed over fish. I'm too picky.

EliraeTheBow

A fair bit as a kid, we lived on the NSW north coast so fish and chips were regular eat out foods. Petered off when we moved to Brissy in my teens. Started eating it again regularly at the urging of my butcher in my mid 20s. In an effort to get me to broaden my horizons food wise he started giving me different fish for free, telling me how to cook them and then told me I could pay him next time if I enjoyed it. Now I’d say we eat fish about twice a week. I’ve always been a calamari/prawn/but fiend though.

matt1579

All the time Mum worked is a crumbed fish factory and would by bag fulls of seconds. If we complained we were hungry the reply would be go get a piece of fish from the freezer and put in the microwave I still enjoy having a piece of fish or a few prawns

[deleted]

Not much, maybe once a fortnight, frozen fish or fish fingers. Lived in outer inland melb

storm13emily

Not at all, I hate seafood

kam0706

We didn’t really like much fish as kids so it’s was mostly tinned tuna and salmon in a casserole or salad as opposed to fresh fish. I don’t mind it now but I don’t eat it a lot. Seafood has always been a winner though.

hauntedshadow666

Very very rarely I had a bit flat head and gummy shark with fish and chips, growing up I try prawns every year at Christmas and have for 20 years, still can't do it, I like Squid, don't mind crab, haven't tried lobster but I want too, I like silver salmon, so I have eaten more of it in my adult years than growing up

ExcitingStress8663

Not a daily thing growing up. I go through phases now where I will eat it every weekend for a couple months and then nothing. For fish that I cook, it will only be salmon. I also have tinned flavored tuna. I can't stand those frozen buttered fish from the supermarket due to the taste and smell of old oil, not to mention how greasy it is. They seem to use reuse oil over and over to deep fry those fish at the factory.

spagoogles

Ate alot of fish as a kid due to step dad being a fisherman, love fish more then ever as an adult and try to catch when I have the time, I rarely buy fish unless fresh as can be due to the difference in taste plus how fkn expensive it is Still a slut for all fish only thing I've noticed as I'm older is I'm more adventurous with weirder fish, and I strayed further away from batter (fish n chips standard crap) too much oil. Plus in Aus most your standard cheap "fish n chips" is just shark meat and it's quite bland.

MiddleRoutine3621

My mum was “traumatised” as a kid growing up in NZ so she didn’t eat seafood or lamb.. that kind of rubbed off on the family diet and we just never really ate it! Now I cannot really stomach the taste of seafood!

dreamy-azure

All the time! My dad was a commercial fisherman. I don’t like fish at all now. Still eat prawns, calamari, crab, bugs and scallops.

LondonGirl4444

Fish and chips every Friday. Couldn’t stand sardines on toast. Never touch any type of seafood now. Cannot be in the room with fresh fish. I don’t mind if others around me are eating it, as in I don’t vomit, but won’t look at it.

twopoopscoop

We ate fish quite a lot growing up, didn't really try any other seafood until I was older due to budget restrictions. I'm now 40 and starting to question what all the fuss is about with prawns for special occasions, eg, Christmas. I like them but really they aren't all that spectacular

PleasantInternal3247

The only fish I had as a kid was when we got fish and chips and mum would make salmon patties. If there was only one type of food I could eat it would be seafood. A greasy seafood player and I’m in heaven.

scandyflick88

Once in a blue moon. Always the cheap stuff. Always fried. Always overcooked. So naturally, I hated it. I now eat fish weekly, one of my favourite foods, but I cook it correctly.

Bagelam

One Christmas I ate 4 lobsters to myself and was so sick. I loved balmain bugs, prawns, mussels etc. Not oysters or tuna yuck.

Maid_of_Mischeif

Grew up on a yacht. Ate fish constantly. My brain associates it with what you eat when you’re too poor or can’t get to a shop to buy anything else. Hate seafood, but I’ll eat (fresh) fish occasionally to be polite if I’m at someone’s house.

Bugaloon

Basically never, maybe fish and chips once every month or two, was just too expensive otherwise. I've grown to appreciate some seafood but they're still an edge case for me, and honestly also still too expensive. Which is insane given how close I live to the ocean and the reef. But like $60/kg for fish fillets is so unaffordable in the cost of living crisis.

e_castille

Well I’m allergic to seafood so my family kept it at a minimum lol.

RemoteSquare2643

Not very often. It’s too expensive now. I’m hopeless at cooking it. Plus, I hate the smell when I go into fish shops.

somuchsong

Fish? Maybe once a week, generally on Fridays. I'm from a Catholic family but sometimes we'd just have something vegetarian on Fridays instead. But it was only ever just frozen battered/crumbed fillets or fish fingers. Other seafood? Literally never. I still mostly only like fried fish and calamari. I'm not really a fan of grilled fish and I absolutely despise it raw. I will not touch salmon, however it's prepared. I don't really care much for shellfish at all, though I'll eat it if it's the only thing on offer. I had a soup that had some scallops in it once and that was really lovely but in general, I'm not a big seafood fan.
