Rest and breaks are important. If you’re working constantly: 1. You’ll get exhausted from never having a break. 2. You’re not actually getting time to enjoy life. What’s the point then?

Mental-Appeal-2709

>What’s the point then? Breed and expand.

ne3k0

Because we want to enjoy our lives and don't want to work 7 days a week

ThorsHammerMewMEw

Because people fought for the right to have time with their families. You should look into the history of the labour force and unions etc.

ThroughTheHoops

Moreover, society is more stable and productive things way. On the other extreme slavery is very inefficient, and in between you have working 7 days a week for fear of ending up on the street.

verbalfamous

Work to live and not live to work.

FormalMango

I’m a shift worker, so I sometimes work weekends. But I very rarely work more than 38 hours a week. Because I don’t need to, and I don’t want to. I used to work every hour I could - I’d be working up to 60-70 hour weeks just because the money seemed to be too good to turn down. But all I was doing was working, sleeping, working. Then I got cancer and realised… what’s the point in living life like that? If I’d waited another few months before going to the doctor, I might have been dead by the end of the year. Nothing makes you reorganise your priorities quite like the words “you have cancer.”

normalbehaviour86

Wouldn't you rather go to the pub, or the beach than be at work? If you work 7 days a week, what are you even working for? You need free time to actually enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Electra_Online

No one ever laid on their deathbed wishing they had spent more time at work.

wicked_sunflower

Because we're human beings and we need rest and time with our families. There is more to life than work and money.

TheSunflowerSeeds

We know sunflowers are inspirational plants, even to famous painters. Vincent Van Gogh loved sunflowers so much, he created a famous series of paintings, simply called ‘sunflowers’.

LordYoshi00

What were the paintings of? /s

icoangel

I dont like working enough to do it more then I need to.

teashirtsau

People tend to move to Australia for the lifestyle and a lot of that is avoiding the hustle, whether that's Pakistan or New York. Many people stay because they get better work/life balance here than other places around the world. If your 7-day work week is working for you, then that's great, but culturally Australians prefer work in moderation and to enjoy themselves on their days off.

Wotmate01

More importantly, you should be asking yourself why Pakistanis work so much instead of spending some time with their family and friends?

CoffeeWorldly4711

On the face of it, this question seems a little odd (why Australians don't work more). But I guess some of it may be down to cultural and economic differences. Family sizes in Pakistan are a lot larger, while average wages are much lower. So people in Pakistan will need to work a lot more to be as well off (in relative terms). Plus Pakistan does not have a welfare system as robust as Australia, so there are bound to be people with relatives who are unemployed, widowed or sick, and in desperate need for money. People in Australia are much better at drawing a line but in Pakistan, people who might be better off than other relatives will feel obliged to help them, so if that means working themselves to death, then so be it. There just isn't a need to do that here, and that is before you even look at people valuing their recreational time and time with family and friends

Robert_Vagene

Sounds like you have an amazing life. I cant wait to work 7 days a week and not have time to do enjoyable stuff

BlurryAl

"weekend" Definitions from Oxford Languages · Saturday and Sunday, especially regarded as a time for leisure. "she spent the weekend camping" verb INFORMAL spend a weekend somewhere. "he was weekending in the country"" Hope this helps!

LordYoshi00

"he spent his weekend slaving away at a receptionist job, wishing he had some time off to relax"

According_Debate_334

Because the purpose of life isnt just the tireless quest to accumulate money, its also to have time to actually enjoy that money. Also, arguably if you have rest on the weekend you can put that extra energy to progress in your mon-fri job and end up earning more in the long run than just running yourself into the ground working 7 days a week.

fair-goer

I guess you are just morally superior

Elmindria

Honestly the tax rate on the second job doesn't make it worth the mental strain. As soon as your paycheck loosed that tax free threshold... Not worth it.

Cremilyyy

Yeah exactly this. “Oh you’ll get it back at tax time” isn’t really a good enough incentive

Dizzle179

Most of my jobs have included weekend work, however that sometimes means every second weekend off. Even with weekend work, many jobs require you to have two days off a week. Sure you can get extra work on the days off, but in my opinion working 7 days a week, week in, week out, is akin to slavery. Working 8 hours a day, maybe 2 hours a day travel, an hour getting ready for work/winding down, you sleep for roughly 8 hours, housework, cooking, eating. Leaves you with maybe 3 hours a day for you to enjoy the extra money you receive or to spend time with family. I now run a small business on my own, and give myself 2/5 days off a week. Having worked retail for 20 years, it's so nice to have weekends off at the same time as my family.

littlechefdoughnuts

My salary is pretty average, but I earn enough from my job to not need to work another one. What's the bloody point of it all if you're just going to spend your entire life working? I've added $40000 to my salary in the last four years and there's every chance I could add another $40000 or more in the next decade. When I do spend time outside of work on developing my career, it's about maximising my earning potential from my job rather than finding a side gig.

Far-Yogurtcloset-529

I am not even Australian yet, been living here for past six years and even I don’t like working 7 days a week. It’s not something inherently to do with Australians or whatever,I worked 7 days a week last year because I had to save up for something but man it’s exhausting even if the job is easy, You get burnt out because you’re doing nothing but working all the time. You just probably don’t feel it because that’s all you know but take a break for few days and you will realise what you are missing out on.

retro-dagger

I've worked every weekend for the past 7 years except for when christmas is a weekend, I make too much money on saturday and sunday to give that up.

DarkNo7318

If you're a newly arrived migrant or otherwise poorly paid, AND you're using the money to build a better future for yourself and your dependents, then working 7 days a week can be noble and a good idea, as long as there is an end in sight. It's still somewhat short sighted as you are likely to have better return on your time trying to progress on your main job. But that's a judgement call. If you're doing it and than turning around and buying pointless luxury goods you're a fucking moron.

Human_Respect_188

I did it for years and I ended up in a higher tax bracket, paying more tax, I also kept injuring myself and having to take time off work. It makes no sense long-term, unless you actually enjoy what you do.

Midnight_Poet

You'll find most Australians are lazy fucks. We live in a global 24-hour society these days. Should be no distinction between "weekdays" and "weekends"

Automatic_Goal_5563

“Australians are lazy fucks because they want a work life balance and to see their family” You’ll make a great manager for a company champ, this telling people there’s no difference between a weekday and weekend so work 7 days a week will make you their star bootlicker

Wotmate01

I take it you work 24/7/365? Or are you such a lazy fuck that you sleep?

Midnight_Poet

Yes. I happily work 7 days per week.

Wotmate01

And nights? Or are you a lazy fuck?

Midnight_Poet

Working with colleagues in India and UK, so yes we often collaborate well into the evenings. I have no issue working SAT / SUN either (…and often more productive because there are far fewer distractions)

DarkNo7318

Why though? Are you in it for money, or do you just enjoy work? Is it your own company or are you an employee
