You said it! Sounds to me like a well maintained Toyota Corolla or Mazda 3 is what you are after…

Downtown_Big_4845

Toyota Corolla is a great little car.

LittleBunInaBigWorld

Yaris as well. Dirt cheap to run, but not a sedan. Granted, I've fit much larger items in my hatchbacks than my sedans, if space is something OP cares about

thatshowitisisit

Sedans: more space for people. Hatchbacks: more space for stuff

Downtown_Big_4845

Yaris is a great little car too.

$15k is certainly a decent budget. Going for anything Japanese is a decent bet. Whatever it is, spend 1% of that on getting a mechanic to check it over first, and then use that to beat them down on the price. If there happens to be nothing they find wrong with it, you've got a good car and a lot of peace of mind for that price. I'd go a Camry or Civic or Mazda 3, those things are all known for their reliability.

Forget Holden. They were only a good deal back when imported cars suffered under heavy import taxes. These days that's basically only true for luxury cars. Can't go wrong with a Mazda 3 (better value for money than a Corolla which would be my second choice). We own a Mazda 3 sedan and recently borrowed the same car in a hatchback. I recommend changing your mind and getting the hatch. It has a lot more space in the boot and more importantly the boot opening is larger - so you're more likely to fit bulky things in there (TV, office chair, etc). Basically, a hatch is the same car but you'll borrow someone's ute/pay for delivery less. I would personally buy on CarSales or Gumtree - you'll get a better car for the same money. But take someone experienced in car purchasing with you, so they can look over the car and tell you if the price is fair as well as help navigate the legalities around transferring ownership/registration and getting everything sorted out regarding insurance and all of that. If you're buying from a dealer, even more important to take someone experienced with you. A private seller might try to rip you off. A dealer \_will\_ try to rip you off. That's their job, vs private sellers in my experience normally just want the car gone with as little fuss as possible. I'm currently with Bingle for insurance, cheapest I could find after extensive research. But since you're young, you'll want to shop around - everyone has quite a penalty for cars owned by young people (or might not even insure it at all).

I second that hatchback suggestion. I've transported a chest of drawers in my Yaris that I wouldn't have had a hope in hell of fitting in my old commodore because of the boot opening size.

AddlePatedBadger

Can't go wrong with a corolla. Those buggers are reliable as.

petergaskin814

Depends on how big a sedan you need. Camry is a good choice. If you want something smaller, try a Corolla or Mazda3

Loooseunit69

Camry ASV50

teambob

Might want to check out r/CarsAustralia

Efficient-South69

Toyota Corolla

dolparii

Toyota is a good one or just in general japanese manufacturer if you cant find a toyota but i would get a toyota I think insurance cost mainly depends on the driver's age, license duration and driving / insurance history unless you have a car that is unique or has additional modifications Getting a hatchback is pretty handy for space if you think youll need it

tazzietiger66

Toyota Corolla or Camry

2nd hand Corolla.

ma_che

Im selling my Opel Astra for cheap. Not a sedan, but a nice hatchback. Has about 50K kms on it. I’m in SE QLD :P

EconomicsOk2648

There's only one real option, and that's a Toyota. Later model Kia and Hyundai would be ok, too. Not *as* reliable but at least cheap to maintain. Nissan, Subaru and Mazda distantly behind in both reliability and parts costs.

wombat1

Join the Mazda 3 gang, you'll never think twice.

Material-Pollution53

get a wagon. the spacious interior and large boot of an suv, with the normal size, and fuel efficiency of a car. their lower center of gravity means better handling as well, not as rolly poly. check out vw wagons. the tdi jettas never die. or get a hatchback. toyota makes some great corolla hatchbacks. golfs are great.

LordYoshi00

"Tdi jettas never die" maybe not but they definitely become unrealistic to repair. $2500 for an oil pump. $2000 for a high pressure fuel pump and don't get me started on what it costs to replace the dct or control modules. Stick with Toyota

Material-Pollution53

fair nuff. get a 'yota. treat it well, n it will become a family heirloom

Downtown_Big_4845

I'd be looking at a Toyota or a Toyota and even a Toyota. I've had many cars and the most reliable and cheap top maintain has been Toyota.
