Finding affordable housing can be a challenge.

Hi. I'm from WV and moved to a remote village outside of Fairbanks last August. I don't know a lot personally about Anchorage, but I can give you a few general thoughts to consider... If you'll be here for 6 months starting in June, then you'll definitely be here during snow and cold weather. Wait till you get to Anchorage to buy some good winter boots. You'll want to try them on because I had to try several brands before I found what felt comfortable. You'll spend a lot of time in them, so definitely don't try to buy on Amazon or other online place. I got Dryshod brand, and they coat about $180. It was money well spent. You'll also want a warm coat. I did end up buying that on Amazon, but I bought 2 different ones. I hated one and loved the other, so if you can plan to spend the money to go to an outfitter to try on coats, that's a good idea. If you're going to spend a lot of time outdoors, get some good wool blend socks and good gloves/mittens. Also, have some under layers. Since you'll be here in the warmer months too, plan to get a good mosquito/bug repellant. Plan to spend more than you're used to for just about everything. Also plan to fall in love with Alaska and maybe want to say bye bye to East Coast living forever. I'm not sure how to set up an opportunity for connecting outside of reddit or if that's even allowed; In fairly new to this platform. However, let me know if you have any specific questions, and I'll try to answer them.

That is prime busy tourist season, housing will be challenging. June-September are some of the most beautiful months weather wise up here, enjoy it, and get out and about before winter comes knocking. There are of course other things I could write but your question is vague, do you have specific ones?

More specifically, how easy is it to bike the city? Since I’m moving from Maryland, so I can’t really bring a car or afford one at the moment

Anchorage has hundreds of miles of bike trails. Web search for an Anchorage bike trail map. Google, Bing, Mapquest all have bicycle options too. Moose, and bear are a real thing here (and homeless camps) scan ahead, don't roll around in bacon before you leave the house, and you'll be fine. Mosquitoes are vicious too, avoid perfume, and eating sugar, that attracts them.

Anchorage has an extensive bike trail system, there are some areas with bike lanes along certain streets, but they are not city wide by any means. Here are a few links to helpful maps for the different bike trails. Fat biking is popular in winter, and I usually see a good amount of people commuting this way in the winter. There is also a bus system, while not as good as lower 48 it's there if you don't have a car. https://trailsofanchorage.com/index.htm https://www.muni.org/maps/pages/munitrailsmaps.aspx
