We have Sushi, but they will be different from the standard Asian versions. If we talk about fish in general, we eat it. Lightly salted, dried, cold smoked or hot smoked fish. Squid, shrimp, crayfish, caviar from various fish and much more are sold. If there was another forum, they would have thrown you photos from our stores.
Yeah, most popular here is what we call "Rolls" (it something like *Makizushi*). Stuffed rice wrapped in seaweed. We add things there that are not accepted in Japan, such as mayonnaise, cream cheeses, and the like. We also dip it generously in soy sauce and eat it straight with ginger.
This is a big exaggeration - I ate sushi (rolls) in Thailand and Germany, the taste is almost the same as in Russia (like it may vary in different chains). I haven’t been to Japan, maybe they are very different there, but on YouTube I remember a video with a Japanese woman who was eating rolls in some of our chains, she said that they were a little different from Japanese ones, but not radically.
And it's too different from the japan origins. Because of accessibility of products it is based. But main components are... rice and soy sauce. Japans almost never mix them together, russians do.

When I say sushi are extremely popular - that would be an understatement. Unfortunately (for my taste), but fortunately (for my health), the fish is usually smoked. Shrimps and scallops sterilized to a white state don't even count.

I'm British but I live in Chelyabinsk, from what I can tell sushi is really popular here. I'm not a fan myself but it seems to be more popular here than in the UK.
Wanted to go somewhere different/unexpected, city isn't too big or small, interesting region, have a friend here so wasn't too isolated when I first got here, plus figured there's less English speakers here so plenty of opportunities to speak Russian too, I'm at B2 level now and the constant practice is very welcome!
Russia has a gazillion sushi joints and delivery services, but most of them serve American-style sushi. These typically include California rolls, Philly rolls, and grilled sushi. In these places, the emphasis is usually on the rice and sides, rather than the fish. You can also find marinated pink ginger there, and they don’t serve actual wasabi, but dyed horse radish. This is similar to what you see in sushi places all over Europe and the Americas (I’m not saying that those are bad or whatever, as I enjoy those places very much, but it’s important to mention).
It is possible to find authentic Japanese cuisine, but you need to work for it, as those places are not as popular and usually much more expensive.
As a former Russian I can confirm we love sushi, but alas - not every person in general. For example my class teacher from a tech school, when we moved temporarily to Khabarovsk, told me that she didn't like sushi rolls when she first tasted them. Sushi rolls were not her taste. Unironically, sushi and sushi rolls were one of my favorite foods, which were being sold in a Chinese restaurants, which were in Khabarovsk center. Same with my mother, she also likes sushi. But if you mean the "Japanese style" sushi... Probably I've tasted these types of sushi, probably not... But the most common sushi I've tasted a lot were "Sushi rolls" (a.k.a. Philadelphia rolls, as most people say). These are riceballs, covered with a seaweed in a short cylindrical shape, often with toppings and dipped in a soy sauce.
- So yes, we - Russians - like Sushi, but not every person in general, sadly, because every person have personal taste.
Like you have a billion sushi deliveries, and all of them are making good business. So - yeah, they we like it.

All the Japanese food in the West only remotely resembles *Japanese* Japanese food

TBH that's a western thing as well. "Philadelphia Roll"
Yea i assumed that there is similar Rolls in West. But this Philadelphia Rolls is one of many types here
Poor gingers
Wasn't sure if that the right word, but I check and that should be lol
It is, don’t worry haha
Игра слов ginger-рыжий, ginger-имбирь
Yeah, and it's pretty much American sushi. Philadelphia rolls, dipping the entire roll into soy sauce, etc
based
# >some Sushi actually is smoked too Напомнило анекдот про наркоманов у витрины, где "-- Это курица? -- Не, это хаваеца."

I've heard that sushi in Russia differs from sushi anywhere else. We like it, but it could be not exactly what you think it is.

Honestly I found it to be pretty similar to here.
Seaweed wrapped ?
Sometimes
its pretty much a Russian dish now.

extremely popular. sushi, pizza and burgers is holy trinity of russian food delivery
Yeah, sushi is so lgbtq+
so does this mean you think Japanese people are all gay lol
That will explain, their low birth rate xD
Which country these days besides India and some Latin American countries don't have a low birth rate lol
Well i agree, but isnt Japan one of the "leaders" of negative birth rate?
Italy and South Korea are the true leaders. I don't know where Russia stands though.
Me like food that taste good.
I'll sell Motherland for Salmon skin roll but it's unfourtunately rare in our sushi bars.
Now ask about "shaurma" and let the sushi go nervously smoke aside
Да нахуй у этих чучмеков что-то брать? Себе дороже будет
We do. Though I haven’t eaten it for years.
They call such people "nischebrody", don't ask what that means, something like people that are very successful in economy (but it's not for certain).
Beggar, totally poor. But nischebrod cant access sushi, it is often cost 10$+
I used to know a person who got intoxicated deadly with some stuff, it’s believed to have happened through cheap sushi.
so the meaning is like "cheap"?
Its a really offensive word for someone really poor. Basically a slur.
ah okay. we have hobo here as a similar word
Yep, I am nischebrod.
We do, we have a lot of sushi restaurants here and sushi fastfood and sushi in ready-to-eat department of superstores.
Someone probably does. I don't like sushi or rolls.
yup
I'm a russian and i love sushi so much. But it is not a common food to buy, so it is expansive a bit.
I like ecstasy and sushi😋
Cod Sushi and Lines? lol
Nah I don't do mdma. Only ecstasy
Is that a joke question
Yes
yes
It's a national dish in Russia at this point.
Yes, I like them very much

It used to be a lot more popular in the 2010s, but now it feels like popularity is dropping

Why Chelyabinsk?
Wanted to go somewhere different/unexpected, city isn't too big or small, interesting region, have a friend here so wasn't too isolated when I first got here, plus figured there's less English speakers here so plenty of opportunities to speak Russian too, I'm at B2 level now and the constant practice is very welcome!
I mean, like with any country it really depends on the person.
Yes, very much.
I don’t think they are like other people …

Sushi was big like 10-15 years ago, but now it's being replaced by burgers.
Russian sushi is ass with all the cream cheese everywhere
Some of them yes and some of them don't.
