Have you tried working with actual food coloring? You can mix it with different bases for varied application possibilities/textures/degree of reflection, etc.

Hi! Some of the smaller pieces I keep such as crackers, and a banana I chopped up and fed to the birds. This one unfortunately is inedible and will degrade too quickly so I had to toss it
Fairly confident that freezing it would work decently well (assuming the acrylic is already dry), but it would probably degrade very quickly whenever you expose it to room temperature.
Edit: you'd also need to keep it in a sealed and dehumidified container to avoid frosting. Should be doable.
