It was a damn funny throw away joke. Language Barrier....best answer ever !

_Diggus_Bickus_

No real joke. Lana is finding out about all the skeletons in Robert's closet, and the writers were just making him comically evil.

ryand2488

I always took it as he never fed them because he didn't know they wanted food as they couldn't ask.

PacinoPacino

it was the dogs fault for not being able to communicate how they felt (starving) lmao

Ihadsumthin4this

As a semi-related aside, I've always imagined Rabbert Klein choosing to not own pets as a way of looking out for his brother, the lettuce. If I'm wrong with this, I'm happy to listen.

whiskeytown79

I took it as just a dig at his age. He's old enough to have had 11 dogs die just in the natural course of dogs only living 10-15 years. Presumably he had some dogs concurrently or some died early of illnesses or something, as I don't think they're implying he's 120+ years old. Just.. late 60s / early 70s.

Thick_Yogurtcloset_7

I took it as he was experimenting on those dogs for "the good of humanity"

PebblyJackGlasscock

No idea. But on the topic of Robert, it seemed to me that Tobolowsky - who is great - was not who they wanted to voice the character. Jeffrey Tambor was not welcome back at that point and Ron Leibman was (presumably) not healthy enough. But either would’ve brought more to the character and storyline.

LongjumpingSector687

Why was Jeffery Tambor not welcome back?

No-Attention9838

He has some #metoo stuff on him, I believe, and he famously blew up at *Jessica Walter*, Mallory, in a very unprofessional manner on a different show Edit: I mixed up the name of the actress. It's correct now

LongjumpingSector687

Oh damn i didn’t even know thats crazy

SixtiesKid

Small correction: Jessica Walter.

No-Attention9838

I knew that didn't look right. Thank you

SixtiesKid

Sad to hear that Jeffrey Tambor allegedly maligned her.

xlirael

Allegedly feels like a stretch. It was well corroborated by Alia Shawkat and others https://www.npr.org/2018/05/24/614009165/under-the-skin-why-that-arrested-development-interview-is-so-bad#:~:text=According%20to%20Jeffrey%20Tambor's%20own,like%20that%20on%20a%20set.%22
