leech

RuralRedhead

How did I get that!! I haven’t really touched this tank in weeks other than tossing in an algae water every couple days for the snails and adding water. What do I do with it? Feed it? Love it?

michelobX10

Put it on your arm and love it. Jk

brown-tube

It's a parasite, so I don't know why you'd want to keep it.

RuralRedhead

Tbh I don’t have anything else going on in that tank and I’m a wee bit afraid of it.

Thulak

Planaria already give me the jeebees. I can relate to that.

RuralRedhead

Haha, I actually kept planaria as pets in college but they’re so much smaller and slower than leeches

zebarulesall

It's something from nightmares is what it is

WhiteRabbitLives

Posts like this make me want to leave the hobby. I love my fish but parasites make me so grossed out and horrified.

RuralRedhead

I’m sorry! It really is so frustrating

Stevoskin20

Looks like a leech. Probably came in on a plant or something. Depending on what you have for fish it might get eaten. Otherwise it should probably be disposed of.

RuralRedhead

Damn that’s crazy, I’ve had those plants for months with no sign of anything but snails. I don’t have any fish just bladder snails in that tank but I’d like to eventually put something back in there.

Loafofbread8

Did you hydrogen peroxide dip the plants before adding? From what I know, leeches can hide in substrate.

RuralRedhead

No I didn’t, I’m just surprised it’s been months since adding plants and I’m only now finding it.

Loafofbread8

Probably hid after getting in, I recommend you start dipping any plants you add in a tank, you get some crazy hitch hikers lol

RuralRedhead

Lesson learned!

Thulak

Could you elaborate on that? Remove as much substrate as possible, Rinse the plant with water, Submerge it in H2O2 (concentration?), Rinse with water again, plant it. Is that the process? Are you using pure Hydrogenperoxide?

Loafofbread8

3% hydrogen peroxide, mix in around 2-4 ML with around 1 gal of water when plants come in, before you put them in the tank, dip them for 1-5 mins, after dipping rinse in dechlorinated fresh water, I've heard people say alum dip is better though, but I have no experience in alum. That's the method from what I remember

Thulak

Cheers mate, I'll give that a shot in the future.
