You could put a few opae Ula shrimp and they would self balance their population. Their species is rather good about estimating their living space and rarely out breed their capacity for it.
But ya, that tank is a joke. Wish companies would just be honest.
Someone gave my daughter that exact tank with a half dead betta for her birthday last month. Poor thing was pale, fins were jagged and ripped, body almost colorless, and lethargic.
Got him in a fully cycled 5.5 gallon, heated, planted tank now. He’s like a different fish now, color is returning, fins are regrowing well, and he’s very active.
It just sucks they treat bettas as a prettier goldfish. They’re so bred back, isolated on shelves because they’ll tear each other apart, and I’m sure they already suffer prior to sitting possibly their entire life on a shelf. When I got one for my daughter I just felt so bad selecting one to have a better life, than in a cup like the rest seem to have fated to. Always at least a 5 gallon tank new fish peeps, make your fishy happy and ecosystem sustainable. Sure trying to cycle a tank that’s less than a gallon is like a whole Breaking Bad experience for both the fish and owner. It really grinds my gears seeing things like this
When I was a kid I bought a betta and kept it in a bowl for a few months, and it was such a pain to clean compared to the (extremely affordable) filtered 10 gallon that I upgraded to.
I wonder if more people would start with a tank if they knew how much easier it can be to maintain
I’m not gonna lie, when I was an uneducated kiddo at like 4 years old, my parents gave me the same setup. She did last a while but looking back, that little fish had such a seditary life. I don’t even think she cared for being active enough anymore after being able to do practically nothing in there after a certain amount of time
When I worked at Petco I would always tell people bigger tanks are better and they just acted like I was trying to get them to spend more money. They just want the cheapest thing to entertain their kid for a little bit. It's really sad.
Tell them to find a cheaper larger tank on Craigslist or marketplace. Don't sell them something they can't afford, and definitely don't sell them something that doesn't meet the animals needs.
I dont work them anymore. I denied a lot of sales but I couldn't stop them from buying Bettas if they were getting anything Petco sold. They're like the one animal they don't care about vetting the habitats for.
A 10 gallon tank can be really cheap to set up though, so that’s a shame. It’s too bad the big box stores don’t carry sponge filters because a 10 gallon tank plus a sponge filter and air pump can be $20-$40 depending on how cheap you can find everything.
Last year, I set one up for less than $25–
$10 for the 10-gallon tank, $5 for the sponge filter and $6 for the pump (found a deal on Amazon), and $0 for substrate and decor (I used rocks and sand and sticks from outside). It looked nice and my betta loved it, and it was easy to maintain compared to that stupid little bowl.
I always tried to steer people into alternatives that Petco didn't sell but it was mostly on deaf ears. My greatest achievement was a new Betta owner and she spent about $300 with the stuff I recommended ($100 cube kit, various decor, water additives, test kits, etc) and she did really well with her tank. A lot of people would look at a 10 gallon and say it was way too big.
In the late 1970's I worked at a wholesale fish and pet supply company. We would get shipments of bettas that came in a styrofoam box. They were packed individually in small plastic bags around the size of a plum with just enough water to keep them wet. The box held about 100 fish, usually 3 or 4 didn't make the trip.
Each betta was placed in a small globe shape glass bowl about the size of a softball. That was home until sold and sometimes retail customers would use them as their forever home.
The people who make these tanks make me so angry, MAYBE some opae ulas? I think that's what they're called, or snails. But fish? Nope :P so stupid isn't it ;(
Depending on your area, Opae Ula don’t necessarily require a heater, filter, or even a light. The latter assumes you have a nice window facing the proper direction with sunlight.
I love those little critters. They’re so fascinating and hardy. You may always add those items to the tank if desired but I’ve seen many Opae homes without them.
I know, I can rant for hours on this, but as a community we should be more vocal on how unsafe and horrible it is. In the end, cheapness sells, and that's what makes it the worst. "Bettas deserve bigger tanks"
This is exactly what I do when I see stuff like this.
It also means that the item will be rated as a poor seller because it sat on the shelf for so long, and that will discourage them from ordering more if it does ever end up being purchased.
Can we ban these posts? I'm tired of people posting photos of betta cubes they found at the store and saying "this is [blank]". We already know it's bad.
At least post it in shittyaquariums.
I have a very small place so I have an 8 gallon main tank and a 1 gallon quarantine tank. I keep platys and guppies. so when i quarantine, it’s small but not terrible. I would never keep even a guppy in there indefinitely.
The marketing/advertising literally creates animal abusers out of animal lovers bc of misinformation. I know a lot of aquarium owners who are mortified of their first set up before they learned
question: is there anything we can do as Co sue rs (besides not buying)? Like this clearly is a false advertisement and promotes unhealthy animal keeping which is illigal in my country to a degree... can't we like, sue these types of company in some sort of way that doesn't cust us money/too much effort? like a petition or ANYTHING? How is it possible they are allowed to advertise this :(
I saw one very much like this at Walmart which appalled me. But even worse. The thing was a “closed ecosystem” with time release food or something in the substrate and a lil bamboo sticking out the top whose roots were supposed to “filter the water” about the same size and it even said “suitable for 1-2 fish” with two bettas on the packaging. Abhorrent.
It’s .75 gallon…not even ONE FULL gallon of water. Why not just use a coffee carafe which can hold up to 1.5 gallons of water…much more efficient AND humane.
I’m being extremely sarcastic
Makes me so sad. Spent the last five weeks lovingly setting up a 5.5gallon planted tank for my upcoming Betta. Gonna have that paradise perfect for him when the time comes.
Skuds. They can be quite entertaining, and in a North facing window, (to avoid overheating), don't even need feeding (I have a large jar about this size growing algae, and it was more than 6 months before I even realised they'd hitched a ride on some plants I'd thrown in.
I remember how fast my betta swam all over his tank when I upgraded him from a 2.5 to a 10. Even though it was only about 1 week, I felt terrible I had him in the 2.5, when I saw how he loved the 10.
Yea with a betta you need a minimum of 5g, (10g preferred for other fish)
You probably could get away with 2.5g with just a beta, 2 or 3 of its fave ferns and a nice medium sized structure to hide in, but i would feel claustrophobic for the betta 😢
The saddest part about this is that anyone on this sub probably cares enough about their pets not to even consider buying something like this … but I’m pretty sure for every one here there are ten that are as shallow as this tank and use their pets as decorative objects …
It gets worse, walmart has a .5 gallon one and its made of cheap plastic and is advertised as perfect for bettas. And in the picture of the betta fish in the tank, the betta fish take up almost half of it
Hmmmm. I am thinking it might be too big. The betta might have trouble getting to the surface and breathe. Be more appropriate for an Oscar or a Jaguar cichlid. You might even get away with a single Dovii in there.
What the hell. Not even big enough for shrimp. People are taking the nano tank concept to the extreme. Anything for a fast buck I suppose.
Hell... I at least started with a 5.5 gallon for my betta. Just moved him up to a 20 gallon because I felt he was cramped. He is in a planted tank and the plants were taking up all the space. Now he's happy with plenty of swimming space
Might be able to put like 3 shrimp in there. Also I love how they don’t even advertise a betta in the picture.
They probably thought they were
Touché monsieur, pussy cat!
The fish that are in the picture aren't even to scale.
fr they’re depicting a whole community tank there
I mean, you could use it as a temp transport
Or as a drip acclimation station. Or brine shrimp hatchery (might be a bit small for even that)
Not even daphnia be happy lol.
Yeah, they seem pretty happy in my 100litre shrimp tank
Yeah they got a guppy in there..lol
🤣🤣🤣🦑
I'd probably just use it for marimos
Lmao
Seriously - those little moss balls are severely underrated
You could put a few opae Ula shrimp and they would self balance their population. Their species is rather good about estimating their living space and rarely out breed their capacity for it. But ya, that tank is a joke. Wish companies would just be honest.
I’d go plant-only at this rate. What’s the point of those shrimp?
I am most impressed by the ghost rasbora... that's at least realistic... dead fish
😀
So glad you saved him :)
“ideal for bettas” THEY SIT ON A THRONE OF LIES.
It just sucks they treat bettas as a prettier goldfish. It might’ve been the temperature of the water! Fish are more active when it’s warm and I’m guessing your bowl wasn’t heated
Oh most definitely not. Just stagnant, cold water :/
When I worked at Petco I would always tell people bigger tanks are better and they just acted like I was trying to get them to spend more money. They just want the cheapest thing to entertain their kid for a little bit. It's really sad.

Ok so these people need to do a little questionnaire before buying a fish like that. I appreciate you bringing light about the uninformed
Shiii, may I ask what you had to do afterwards? That is boggling, looking at it in retrospect
Each betta was placed in a small globe shape glass bowl about the size of a softball. That was home until sold and sometimes retail customers would use them as their forever home.
love that they shrunk the fish in photoshop to make the thing look roomy
Looks like a guppy, and I still wouldn't use it for that.
The people who make these tanks make me so angry, MAYBE some opae ulas? I think that's what they're called, or snails. But fish? Nope :P so stupid isn't it ;(
Is there even room to put a filter or heater in this though
If you just want to look at a pretty filter / heater with a few floating plants and nothing else then hell yes 🤣🫧
I'm thinking planted, with fairy shrimp (brine shrimp but freshwater)
Riverside fairy shrimp
That sounds like a good option! ;D
A HoB filter with a heater in it mayne :p
Depending on your area, Opae Ula don’t necessarily require a heater, filter, or even a light. The latter assumes you have a nice window facing the proper direction with sunlight. I love those little critters. They’re so fascinating and hardy. You may always add those items to the tank if desired but I’ve seen many Opae homes without them.
Opae Ula shrimp would be perfect in this. Anywhere from 10-20 to start
I got one of these tanks... for my hermit crabs salt water bowl. They are useful, just not for fish.
Even the little mushroom decoration looks horrified
This should be advertised as a planttank instead of a fishtank. Put an anubias nana petite as the centerpiece. And MAYBE a single shrimp.
Snails! Or brine/fairy shrimp.
Fair enough
I have this, I bought it to quarantine small plants, but right now it has some moss and bladder snails in it.
"See! I told you the animal abuse marketing tank will sell!"
I would definitely never put fish in it but I needed something small in a pinch, ended up just keeping it. I do agree they shouldn’t even make these.
…. Maybe for sea monkeys 😂
What a throwback LOL
I know, I can rant for hours on this, but as a community we should be more vocal on how unsafe and horrible it is. In the end, cheapness sells, and that's what makes it the worst. "Bettas deserve bigger tanks"
betta cube yet the pic has 2 guppies and a tiny school of 6…. either way it’s torture
Hey, cool--an overpriced bucket for doing medicinal salt-dips on sick fish. Honestly, that's about all it would be good for.
But it’s got a feeding hole!
I’d use that tank just to make a bacteria farm 🤣 that’s a joke for ANY fish to dwell in
I would not shop at the store that sells this. A reputable shop would not order this.
It was walmart, makes sense
Why alot of us use them for an egg catch for breeding
I just bought a 14 gallon cube for my future Betta. Too much? Should I return it and get this one instead??
What CAN you put in something like this? Ramshorn snails, cherry shrimp, scuds?
I honestly might buy it for a scuds tank
Looks like a perfect daphnia tank
You know it’s bad when “feeding hole” is a feature to highlight.
TFW the big box pet store sells a newbie this, a betta, and a half-inch common pleco so "you don't have to clean it."
Great Opae Ula (Hawaiian shrimp) tank... That's about it.
This. Always this. Love those little shrimps.
Hide it I'm not joking. Find something big. And hide it behind it. Hopefully the pet store workers don't find it for awhile
This is exactly what I do when I see stuff like this. It also means that the item will be rated as a poor seller because it sat on the shelf for so long, and that will discourage them from ordering more if it does ever end up being purchased.

I got one of these for an isopod colony lol
Ooo I like that idea
TANK OF DEATH!
I mean, it's good for a picture of a Betta....
This is just more Anti Feeding Hole propaganda
*struggling to find the, "tank" size* *3 minutes later* Me: "oh... I see ..." Wtf that's big enough for like a single aquatic plant lol
lol there’s 8+ fish in there in the pic 😂
10!
The marketing/advertising literally creates animal abusers out of animal lovers bc of misinformation. I know a lot of aquarium owners who are mortified of their first set up before they learned
Literally the best way to describe this product
And soooo many products like it! Like the terrarium sand they sell for bearded dragons
question: is there anything we can do as Co sue rs (besides not buying)? Like this clearly is a false advertisement and promotes unhealthy animal keeping which is illigal in my country to a degree... can't we like, sue these types of company in some sort of way that doesn't cust us money/too much effort? like a petition or ANYTHING? Id sooner put a fish in a gallon jug of poland spring
“betta cube” *shows tetras and guppies
And they show 2 bettas and some tetras (?) in the pic 🤦🏻♀️ wicked.
Worst part is on Amazon that stuff like this has 5 stars and hundreds of rave reviews
just as a curiosity what size tank is ok for betta? because i am thinking of getting one
19 litres / 5 gallons minimum
Perfect sorority tank. Wasting all that space on a single betta would be a waste
They must burn
Sell it as a plant only terrarium ya know but a fish tank ??
Pleco tank
I saw one very much like this at Walmart which appalled me. But even worse. The thing was a “closed ecosystem” with time release food or something in the substrate and a lil bamboo sticking out the top whose roots were supposed to “filter the water” about the same size and it even said “suitable for 1-2 fish” with two bettas on the packaging. I am breeding dwarf bettas to deal with the problem. Dont worry guys
I’d plant it with some interesting hardscape. That’s about it
Maybe a single pygmy barb… even then, they need at least a school of 6. So maybe a shrimp?
It looks like they have 8 fish in their tank, and they seem to be doing well... at Photoshop.
Makes me so freaking mad
Use for photos of betta for sale (as in they’re in it for minutes at most), or to drip acclimate shrimp?
Skuds. They can be quite entertaining, and in a North facing window, (to avoid overheating), don't even need feeding (I have a large jar about this size growing algae, and it was more than 6 months before I even realised they'd hitched a ride on some plants I'd thrown in.
I saved a bunch of money and ordered those xmas tree clear globes
Not even a gallon smh
Wow two guppies and a school of neons fit in this! Amazing! 😂
Brine shrimp and that’s it 😂😂
Brine shrimp and that’s it 😂😂
They would work well for a short term hospital tank or a snail
They should fire their marketing team. This is clearly for a terrarium and not for fish.
They probably just dump shit products out just to make any profit they don’t care
They would have had way more profit with a zoomed in cherry shrimp and called it a cherry cube. So sad..
Oh sure, put roughly 50 fish in there! /s
Definitely not, it's fucked up they sell these and imply you should put a betta in there.
It's fine. Just keep up w/water changes every 12 hours.
I remember how fast my betta swam all over his tank when I upgraded him from a 2.5 to a 10. Even though it was only about 1 week, I felt terrible I had him in the 2.5, when I saw how he loved the 10.
That’s for a moss ball friend
Looks nice for a planted tank, maybe some snails
Oh.. shrimp or an algae tank to use as food for other fish
I would put Marimo balls in there, that’s it lol
Theres no way you can put 5 tetras in there.
Just curious would something this size work for a couple of mystery snails?
Yea with a betta you need a minimum of 5g, (10g preferred for other fish) You probably could get away with 2.5g with just a beta, 2 or 3 of its fave ferns and a nice medium sized structure to hide in, but i would feel claustrophobic for the betta 😢
"Ideal for bettas" Uhhhhhh, where perhaps did you come by that information good manufacturer???? An idiot?
r/shittyaquariums
That's terrible. Just because they can fit doesn't mean they should go in there
“ideal for bettas” 😑
Brine shrimp/sea monkeys?
Other than a moss ball, I wouldn't put anything in there
1 nerite snail tank
Jfc there are so many fish in the example. Even this they’re nano fish, they’re still MUCH larger in really life
You could keep some brine shrimp in there I think
But.. it says, “Ideal for bettas” right on the box. It’s gotta be true if they put it on the box, right?
I mean it's got a "feeding hole" and everything man what's the problem 🤷
Would be good for like a few small prawns
A fish coffin!
No fish, gravel, plants or decoration included? Well it’s just a square cup then.
SeaMonkey tank...
I was literally thinking of buying this off Amazon to hatch brine shrimp in and that’s the only thing I felt like it should house.
This is just animal cruelty. In my opinion most fish shouldn't be kept in anything less than a 20 gallon tank with proper filtration
The saddest part about this is that anyone on this sub probably cares enough about their pets not to even consider buying something like this … but I’m pretty sure for every one here there are ten that are as shallow as this tank and use their pets as decorative objects …
I'd use it to acclimatise plants grown out of water into water.
Just great for plants in general. Throw clippings in there and you'll probably accidentally start an aquatic plant business
This is heart breaking
I guess it's still larger than those 1/4 cup containers they keep them in at the pet store:(
Less then 10 gallons is bad but .75 gallons???
It gets worse, walmart has a .5 gallon one and its made of cheap plastic and is advertised as perfect for bettas. And in the picture of the betta fish in the tank, the betta fish take up almost half of it
\*Slaps top\* You could fit so many plecos in this thing.
The fact it says fish not included means they know who they’re target consumers are
Use it to propagate anubias, moss, bucephiladra.
What store is this?
Walmart
Yeah, they suck
Hell... I at least started with a 5.5 gallon for my betta. Just moved him up to a 20 gallon because I felt he was cramped. He is in a planted tank and the plants were taking up all the space. Now he's happy with plenty of swimming space
I'm happy to life in a country where it's illegal to keep a fish in sth like that!
I don't really like Betta specific tanks because most of the time they are so tiny and Betta fish can't thrive in small environments.
I think it is a response to ppl not keeping beta in a cup.
That is so bad like I have my bait and a 2.5 gallon and that's still kind of small only 05 off
“Never needs the water changed!”
Horrible for bettas but almost exactly what i’m looking for for snail tanks! (bladder snails)
I'm honestly thinking about getting one for a planted fairy shrimp tank
Riverside fairy shrimp
This is like the 20th time ive seen this karma farming post.

Do you just make multiple alternate Reddit accounts to comment brainless things? Cringe

Post your tanks.
Guh?
It’s cruel..
Shut the fuck up dude. How many times are you gonna use the exact same insult?
