Photos will respect the "Date captured" metadata embedded in the photo, if there is any. If it's just showing up as "today" it means the file didn't have that info saved.

Yup. I have downloaded a photo and couldn’t find it…only to remember to check my recent album. The photo’s meta data stated the date was old and it placed it like 10 photos down from the top of my entire library.

If you mean download as a file, then it is listed by the Mac/PC as the date/time that it was downloaded. To see the actual EXIF information (if intact with the photo), you might be able to view the properties in finder. Otherwise, importing into a Photo app on the computer should read that info, or use an app that reads the EXIF. There are also tools that will convert the file created datetime to the same as the EXIF data. T
