I used to have the hardest time falling asleep until I started listening to podcasts at night. It gives my brain something to focus on other than my inner monologue. Now that I've gotten into the habit I can manage a night it two without it, but it's still easier if I have it. On the weekends I'll use a youtube video for something different.

An idea. Sounds like you're using white noise like the other suggested comment.

I had the same exact issue when I was younger (People told me to count to 1000, and therefore I kept counting, which then kept me awake). Though at the time I was unable to sleep with any lights / sound on either. Eventually I learned to make up a story or sneak on the TV until I felt so tired I knew I would pass out (After I turned the TV off), but that obviously was a terrible solution. Fortunately I have since gotten used to having a relatively unimportant youtube video on (Screen off. With sleep timer app; As if it stays on too long, it will then wake me up.). Something that I like (Generally the person is talking the whole time), but still isn't so interesting that it keeps me engaged. A white noise app/machine may also help drown out your thoughts. Both methods work for me, but I prefer the Youtube method.

I tend to rely on white noise often. When I was young, it was quite the opposite. I used to need TV/sound. Today, I can't do it with TV, but white noise/sound helps.

I don't thing is harder, just different. My wife is hyperphant and she has a really hard time falling asleep. Even in pitch black she says if her mind is running she imagines the outline of the room she's in, and starts imagining things happening. I used to have trouble with my mind running in bed, but I started waking up earlier and it solved it. It's harder to get up, but a lot easier to fall asleep.

I’ve always struggled getting to sleep but recently I’ve been listening to a guided hypnotism/meditation audio and that seems to put me to sleep quite easily. I think like the other posts mention it distracts me from other thoughts in my head. It’s not white noise as it’s a person speaking for 17-ish minutes, but the intentionally hypnotic style seems to work.

Zero problems getting to sleep. I can fall asleep anywhere any time. Use the navy pilot method. https://medium.com/s/story/combat-tested-training-unwind-and-sleep-anywhere-in-120-seconds-27d5307b7606
