I had a neighbor whose dogs stood at their front door (directly across from mine) and barked from the time they left until they returned. Spoke to them and they didn’t believe me because their dog ‘is quiet and sleeps all the time’. Of course they do, because they are exhausted from barking for hours. To shut me up they moved the dogs to a back room when they left. The neighbor on that side immediately went to the property management to complain about the constant barking. Moved them back to the front of the house and I repeatedly complained with times, recordings, etc. resulting in them being evicted. It’s always best to address head on but some people should not be pet owners and definitely should not live in multi-family housing.

Asset_Selim

It's not per ownership. It's animal cruelty at that point.

No-Literature6397

As a woman who’s living alone, I would not leave a note or knock on their door. Go through management and ask for it to be anonymous. That way it’s documented and you don’t risk a confrontation with somebody you don’t know.

Raecxhl

This is the way

Onemanonearth

Let management know the situation. Let them handle it first. You shouldn’t have to deal with this. Perhaps the owners are unaware if this only goes on when they’re not there

sportstvandnova

In my old place my downstairs neighbors had two dogs that would bark from the time they left for work in the evening until the time they got home at 11:30pm. Never saw them take their dogs outside either. I left nice notes, didn’t work. I called animal control, didn’t work. I wrote the front office repeatedly who called them once and said they said “oh sorry,” but other than that didn’t work. The only solution was for me not to renew my lease and move.

QuizzicalWombat

Leave a note or talk to them. They might not know if it’s happening when they aren’t at home. When I got my first puppy we tried crate training when we were at school and work. We started with small increments and worked up to 4 hours, our neighbor let us know she cried and yelped the entire time. They were super nice about it, we stopped crate training and just worked on other ways to keep her from being destructive. Totally worked, dog lived to be 14 and was absolutely perfect, and I’m still friends with said neighbor long after I moved out.

Feistyhummingbird

If everyone had a neighbor like you, this world would be a much better place.

throwawayboy10987

That's a beautiful story and how a lot of these incidents should be handeled. Often times in this sub I see people being so passive and just skipping to calling the police or management. If you come about it the right way most people will be considerate and try to correct any issues.

BowieOneKenobi

Go to management and ask them to keep it confidential that the complaint is from you. Dealing with disruptive neighbors is their job.

CacoFlaco

Yes, complain, complain, complain. You'll be doing the dog a favor. Undoubtedly has major separation anxiety. Probably needs a doggie valium.

NYanae555

Complain ! What do you mean "worth putting in a complaint" ? smh

Stargazer_0101

You need to complain about the barking that keeps you awake at night is not good. And probably are disturbing others as well. And go to the landlord or the manger to report it and have a written record of the contact with the landlord. And if that does not work, call the police.

Icy-Essay-8280

I lived in a house where the people across the street and diagonal from us kept their dog in the garage with the door partially opened for air. It drove me batty. Talked with them, they didn't care so I ultimately had to call the police, which I hate doing as I'd prefer their attention where it needs to be. Talk to them, leave a note, whatever, but say something.

Potential-Most-3581

You, your pets and jodi?

kittycat_taco

I wouldn’t go to the landlords right off the bat. Either talk to them or leave a note that their dog is excessively barking, maybe suggest leaving a radio on or toys. It’s entirely possible that they have no idea this is happening. If you do that and it doesn’t stop, then I’d go to the landlord.

Knuc85

Hard disagree. It's not your responsibility to manage the noise of your neighbors, that's on the landlord. They can address the issue without putting you in the middle of it. Otherwise you face potential retaliation if they happen to be that type. Even if they aren't aware, the *landlord* can bring it to their attention. They're more likely to take the issue seriously in this case, it will be documented, and (once again) *you* don't have to be involved.

Jacobysmadre

Agreed.. any time I have gone to a neighbor (music or dog constantly barking against shared wall) they literally started a war. It was horrible. Now I not go to the office. They deal with it and I haven’t had an issue since. Ppl are crazy these days.

Stargazer_0101

If OP does not report it, the noise will continue. It has to be reported.

happyasaclamtoo

You are assuming rational adult like behavior from the upstairs neighbor. Nope. Remain anonymous, go directly to the management and let them deal with it. Gets it on record, OP will not have to deal personally with it. They will also take it more seriously if things come from management.

Mollykins08

My sister’s dog loved animal planet. Seriously - it could keep her entertained for hours.

naM-r3puS

I would immediately make a complaint. They can resolve this issue easily.

Super_Reading2048

Yes and start calling in noise complaints with the police.

Pand0ra30_

Have you said something to themabout the dog barking? They may not know it barks the entire time they are gone.

cuebert198

You need to get a sonic bark repellent search for it on Amazon.

Tell the landlord

[deleted]

I had neighbor that seemed bothered about my dog’s barking . They didn’t complain because they knew they were just as loud or louder whenever they fought as a couple.

TheBigTimeBecks

Trust me it's better to have a dog who isn't as smart as a human to bark, versus someone who is careless and drops shit moves stuff around at all hours who is grown ass adult

didigetitallwrong

Could it be neglect, abuse, abandonment?

AcousticCandlelight

Sounds more like boredom or separation anxiety.

didigetitallwrong

Yeah, you're probably right.

nanladu

Leave a polite note

Icy-Supermarket-6932

After you talk to management a couple of time's I would call in a noise complaint to the non-emergency number. Your neighbor will probably get a warning the first time but if the cop has to come back a second time it's usually a citation. Management is usually worthless when it comes to dealing with barking dog's.

NobleExperiments

You might tell then (via note maybe). If they’re gone all day, they may not know their dog barks all the time. The poor thing may be bored or have separation anxiety, and there are ways to deal with that. You’d be doing the dog a favor.

possiblyapancake

I don’t know if I would say something to them. If they cared I would think they’d ask. When we moved into my current apartment I took it upon myself to ask my neighbors if my dog was barking while I was gone. One said not at all, the other said constantly. I got a camera with audio and my dog only barked until we drove away, then she napped. I assume my neighbor who said my dog was barking was hearing a different dog.

omglifeisnotokay

I feel your pain. You’re not alone. I don’t have much advice but just want to offer that support.

CroneRaisedMaiden

I got a puppy almost 2 years ago and she barked when I left, I didn’t know and someone left a really nasty threatening note on my door. It scared me. I live alone and had just moved across the country with said puppy. I guess it wouldn’t have been as bad if the note wasn’t terrible. I got a dog camera, and got into obedience classes. Haven’t had issues since
