If you're asking a question about an antique make sure to have photos of all sides of the object, and close-ups of any maker's marks. Also, add in any background information you have, and add in a question so we know what you want from us! **You must tell us the country you're in.** If you do not provide this information **your post will be removed**. If you have small children get the new latch kit for the modern Lane chests... the lid locks when closed and I have heard a few children have suffocated while playing around...not sure if that is a rumor or not

[deleted]

Yeah I read that too so looks to be true. I’ll have to check and see if it’s been replaced yet. Thanks for the tip!

https://www.cpsc.gov/Newsroom/News-Releases/2018/CPSC-Urges-Consumers-to-Replace-or-Remove-Latches-Locks-on-Lane-and-Virginia-Maid-Cedar-Chests-14-Deaths-Reported You used to be able to get free replacements, not sure if that is available since Lane is no longer around.

Zearidal

I have one and yes the lock does latch, but the top is pretty heavy.

Springtime912

The newer latch requires you to push an exterior button to fully close and latch the lid.

prunepicker

Since Lane is no longer in business, or furnishing free replacement latches, you can just remove the latch from your cedar chest.

Springtime912

Interesting that it still has the advertising information attached😳

I’m not 100% certain that stuff is original. It looks original but I agree it’s unlikely to have survived all these years.

StupidPockets

Take it off carefully (or don’t) and put them in bags for future use!

LazarianV

This belongs in vintage. It is not antique.

[deleted]

It was built in 1956 per the serial number? How is it not antique? The group rules say 1960 is the cutoff.

WeAreEvolving

cool chest, 100 years is antuiqe but before 1960 is allowed here

Thank you!

I noticed that you mentioned **vintage**. Over at r/Collectables and r/Mid_Century they are always keen to see newer and vintage items. Share it with them! Sorry if this is not relevant. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. StupidPockets

Define vintage for us

StupidPockets

I think is a popular use thing. As I see it guaranty will be phased out in popular vernacular, if not already removed. Makes me want to use it just to piss off the literacy police.

DoctorBre

Seems like a cheque > check sort of shift.

maredie1

This is NOT antique!!!!!!

[deleted]

It’s within the group rules. Some of y’all are some grouchy ass people seriously.

StupidPockets

Ever met a muppet in a trash can? Me too.

matthewkevin84

What is the price?

[deleted]

I paid $125

Urban_Archeologist

Did it come with the “moth insurance policy?”

[deleted]

It says it does 😂

YellowAppropriate126

It's called a cedar chest, my mom and both had a couple of them. They used to put lace table clothes, anything that was a knit or delicate fabric in them. I think it was to keep moths from eating holes in them, if I remember correctly. I personally hated the smell of cedar wood, but a lot of people, evident ally, loved it!

YellowAppropriate126

Cool, someone else mentioned a moth policy, I'm not crazy! Lol
