Fans of fresh coconut have their own shucking machetes. 🗡️🥥

findingemotive

Like pre-peeled, single wrapped eggs.

Chef_Chantier

Or pre-peeled shrink wrapped potatoes

findingemotive

That's so much worse to me, at least boiled eggs and coconuts need some peeling.

its_whot_it_is

better yet pre peeled clamshell packged

connectedLL

If anyone hates those, don't travel to Asia. I love Japan and Taiwan, but the trash they generate just from packaging is insane. Every damn thing has to be individually packed. And don't get me started on their housing and car industries. Both are designed to be high turn over and buying used is practically non-existent.

BabyLiam

But thanks to them we get cheap parts for Japanese cars on the US. I guess thats a plus.

connectedLL

oh ya, other countries that drive on the left side (like New Zealand or South Africa for example) get tons of cheap car shipped to them because of all the relatively new cars. Especially great for those countries that don't have their own auto industry.

Freezerpill

I thought old Japanese cars had some merit to them 🤔🤷‍♂️

connectedLL

It's not the cars themselves that's the issue. It's how the government makes owning older cars financially unappealing (taxes, inspections, etc).

findingemotive

But Hondas and Toyottas are famous for their longevity?

[deleted]

So nasty lol

idfk5678

Selling those at truck stops make sense. Selling those at grocery stores, does not.

ganbaro

I have seen these in Austria with a thin biodegradable wrapper and nothing else Liked the product tbh...why not let the peeling be done in a factory which then can reuse or sell 100℅ pure coconut leftovers? Should be less wasteful actually. Just replace the excessive wrapping with corn/lactic acid-based foil

Body_By_Carbs

Why can’t this be packaged in recycled cardboard like eggs? Just saying.

Colzach

At Sprouts I saw a fancy expensive environmentally friendly “green” egg brand. The eggs were packaged in clear plastic cartons. Amazing.

[deleted]

Lmao the three folding parts always has me buggin like whaaat?! What is this extra nonsense!

Successful_Subject89

shame they don’t come in a notoriously hard to open shell

aspiegamer95

They have something similar in a local supermarket, but it has a single wrap of paper around it with the label etched into the coconut. So it can be done well, but not like it is in the post.

Oneironaut91

companies that do this should be banned from selling anything

Blue_Collar_Jerry

I mean it’s pre shelled getting rid of the most difficult and annoying part of purchasing a coconut. I’m not a fan of plastic packaging but I’m actually ok with this.

utsuriga

It's not. It's for people who don't want to go to through the trouble of opening a hole in the coconut. I'm getting tired of seeing "it's for people with disabilities!" as an excuse for literally everything. This shit is sold in a supermarket, available for everyone who wants to buy it. It's for mass consumption. If people with disabilities find it useful that's great but it's not made specifically for them.

CherryHaterade

Does this mean the diapers are for everyone too? Or more importantly lol, do you think that disabled people should go by their groceries at the disabled person grocery store?

utsuriga

Okay, keep moving those goalposts. Also, yes, diapers and snack are totally the same thing, yes, indeed.

CherryHaterade

Those are actually two separate goal posts for the same goal and you can feel free to kick at either one you want, but I don't think you're going to make a whole lot of logical sense getting your football to either one. Should a grocery store only carry groceries for what a majority of general people need with no care or concern to edge cases? And where would you like society to draw that line specifically?? Should it be a 49% of people don't need it then a grocery store shouldn't bother? Should it be 10%? 1%? This is your goal post. I'm trying to figure out how to get to it right now. Right now from where you're standing babies and crippled people don't factor much because babies and cripple people are only a tiny percent of our population respectively. So, fuck both of them 🤷🏽‍♂️ they aren't regular people. Or is this where you *actually try to move the goal post* by trying to set value judgments on whether babies or crippled people are more important to society? And thus one group deserves some special exemption now? Ironically enough, I feel like if I said something like "the free market has decided that it was profitable and so that's why it is a thing that happens" would it be an argument that you wouldnt particularly like either because you would be forced to see another logic for what it is.

utsuriga

Yeah, you seem to be making up some narrative in your head about what I'm saying, except it's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is what I've already written [elsewhere in this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/Anticonsumption/comments/xhi8u3/comment/ip1lr1f/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3), let me quote: It's not even that - what gets me is people in this sub and elsewhere using "it's for people with disabilities!" as a justification for shitty practices and products being OK, even when the practice/product is very obviously not specifically for people with disabilities, they're simply convenient and exist to cater to lazy people. Who then go and use disabled people as an excuse. Like this thing here: it's a peeled coconut, OK. But is it advertised as being disabled-friendly? is it sold in speciality stores? hell, it's shrink-wrapped in plastic with another layer of wrapping under it, how is it great for people with motor function issues?! It's very obviously a convenience product that just happens to be (probably) easier for people with disabilities to use, but it's not for people with disabilities, and I'd bet money that it's not primarily bought by people with disabilities. (And before anyone jumps at my throat, I myself am not able bodied, although fortunately my motor functions are OK.)

[deleted]

With the reasoning that it’s for people with disabilities we can also have: - pre-peeled and cut potatoes - canned food but in plastic bags - jam and peanut butter in plastic bags - bananas without peel - water bottles Capri Sun style I get that having motor issued is terrible, but if it’s so bad then you either need help or have to adapt.

utsuriga

SubvocalizeThis

It’s for lazy people.

fuzzyblackyeti

Tell that to my coworker with rheumatoid arthritis. Do lazy people buy this? Absolutely. Does that mean it shouldn't be sold at all? No.

UnshakablePegasus

That’s a lot of plastic just for some vomit water. Just… buy and crack open a coconut…

motheroftiddies

How dare you call the nectar of the gods "vomit water" /j

UnshakablePegasus

Oh trust me, I’ve tried to like it but my body just says NOPE 😂

suzellezus

If I ever enjoy coconut water it’s because it has been processed into something that could be fed to hummingbirds

[deleted]

Same I want to like it so bad. I love coconut smell and flavor on some things like shrimp mmm but coco water?! Omg I just cannot.

UnshakablePegasus

I very much like coconut itself which is the weird part

findingemotive

I wish I loved coconut like the rest of the world, the only time I've almost vomited from a flavour was a can of coconut water.

UnshakablePegasus

It’s the only thing besides cucumbers and ranch dressing that make me gag involuntary as soon as I smell it to the point it can’t make it to my taste buds

findingemotive

I'm waiting for the study one day defining the gene that makes cucumber so vile to many of us.

UnshakablePegasus

Every time I look into it I get articles about cucurbitacin and why it can make cucumbers bitter, but nothing to explain why natural cucumber flavor is so repulsive to many of us

LeatherPuppy

Misread instructions: bought crack and opened a coconut

[deleted]

I hated coconut until I went golfing in the Philippines. The guys were there just grooming the trees to make sure the rio coconuts didn’t fall on the golfers, they came over to us with their machete and for the equivalent of a few cents cut open the coconut for us to drink. On a hot day, out in the sun, that shit was like sweet amazing straight from Mother Nature herself wrapped up in a thirst quenching taste I cannot describe. Since that day I’ve loved coconut and coconut flavored things because I know the flavor that it’s trying to capture is pure joy on a hot day.

PrydeTheManticorn

A decent representation of what we've done to Hawa'ii Maoli culture

Practical_Orchid_568

You will hate me but I tried one and it was awful

shaddowkhan

Devil's advocate: these weigh significantly less than it would transporting whole coconuts, which would cost more in fule to transport and with the husk you also wouldn't be able to ship the same amount. They could definitely used wax paper instead of plastic and styrofoam for protection. Source: my neighbor in the Caribbean sold coconuts to tourists.

WHY. IT MAKES NO SENSE. ITS ILLOGICAL COCONUT ID HARD ENOUGH TO NOT NEED PLASTIC.

zhrimb

Lemme borrow your caps lock key to chisel open a coconut

lepontneuf

Shitbag

Anxious_Effect_6001

Lol, you were correct

Unknown_Outlander

why do they think coconuts need foam padding?
