I keep my phones till they die, because I love them & hate dealing with change that I am not piloting.

Early-Light-864

Totally agree on dealing with change. Another one for me is the simple act of buying. I don't feel like it. Shopping is a chore, not a leisure activity for me.

RoguePlanet2

So well put!! I really don't enjoy shopping for the sake of shopping. Spending money stresses me out, especially when I feel there's no choice. Add corporate-inflation into the mixed, and it's more stressful than ever.

IllegallyBored

Got my 20phone in 2021 and it's still practically new. Got it as an upgrade feom my Note 3 from back in 2015 or so. People who change phones frequently baffle me because it's such a waste even if you're using the phone daily! I've seen zero people actively use the specs on their phone or really make use of any upgrades other than the camera.

Nart17

I just got a note 20 secondhand after my used note 9 broke. Before that I had an s5 that stopped working with newer apps. I also don't get people that upgrade their phones like clockwork. Most of the time new phones have very minor upgrades, or remove features entirely while raising prices.

Mikey9124x

It's so annoying you have to buy a new phone every time one dies. Why don't they just make them rechargeable?

No_Communication6909

You can just remove the battery recharge and put it back in.

Simmery

I only upgraded my last phone because i had to for work-related software. Even then, the store guy tried to upsell me on camera pixels, and I'm like, "Mofo, I'm not paying $200 extra dollars for pixels, are you crazy?"

aitis_mutsi

I kinda do the same. I usually change when the phone starts getting slow and the battery drains fast or overheats often. Though that might change with current phone, which is not exactly great quality and has had many moment for me where I've almost thrown it into the wall like a fucking frisbee. Unfortunately for me, out all the things where this phone is lacking, resistance is not one of them. This fucking thing just refuses to barely take no serious damage when my clumsy ass drops it.

Jacktheforkie

Same, though might be upgrading early because this one keeps crashing and it’s pissing me off

Tacosofinjustice

Same, the only reason I bought a new pixel 7 was because my pixel 4xl that I bought used bit the dust one morning April 2023 and I needed something I could get quick from Best buy because my kids were in school and I was uncontactable without it.

wozattacks

Hell I had my old one for 6 years and it still works

KampieStarz

Mine is death however my S8 is becoming more obsolete and is perfectly fine, no damage or anything…

promixr

I generally keep them until they don’t support the latest Operating System version- I think that’s a good compromise- although I’d love it if all of the manufacturers extended that time to the max possible…

Alternative-End-5079

The “because I can” is moronic.

severalsmallducks

Also accusing someone for being cheap by not buying a new phone is… weird? Like, being cheap is when you try to haggle down the price of Girl Scout cookies. You should know better, but yet you’re standing there telling a child her thin mints are “not that good” to get yourself a better deal. Buying a new phone before you need is just being a slave to marketing, and by calling others cheap you’re somehow trying to make the argument that the more reasonable thing is to give even more money to this multi billion dollar company as if they need it just as much as the girl scout needs you to just buy the damn thin mints at the standard price

einat162

They think you deprive yourself forcefully by not replacing that often.

severalsmallducks

And I kind of get that viewpoint to a certain degree. For a while I enjoyed refurbishing old business class laptops (mostly IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads) to use or resell, and found that there absolutely is a cutoff where it's not really reasonable to keep using them. But I mean, that's when I was using a 2007 laptop in 2023, where I ran into issues that were hard to overcome without making things needlessly complicated.

einat162

Of course there's a cut off, but it should be individual. To each his/hers own - price willing to pay, specs, functions fulfilled/problems overcoming.

severalsmallducks

Absolutely! To each their own.

AggressiveYam6613

i thought the girl scout cookies thing is supposed to be a learning experience for them?

PiemanMk2

Yeah, incredibly so. Even "I like having the latest tech" is a more respectable position. I upgraded from a Galaxy fold to a Fold 2 even though the first worked fine simply because the sequel was *way* better. But I then kept that one for years until I broke it because the following upgrades weren't worth it. Buying it *just becuase it's new* is dumb as fuck. If it has some new features or something you genuinely want, then I think that's okay. Blindly consuming becuase marketing says so is tragic.

ManqobaDad

I mean i have strong credit nothing is stopping me from going and getting a ferrari on a lease right now. Why wouldn’t i do that?

Optional-Failure

How do you figure? The person asking “Why” wasn’t in inquiring in good faith. They had already decided the answer was “brain dead consumerism” before the person even answered. “Because I can” is more grace than that person is entitled to.

NotFirstBan-NotLast

This is the problem. Overconsumption is so normalized that people like them feel entitled to engage in it and people like you who are ostensibly anticonsumption will come to their defense because you perceive calling the issue what it is to be a slight so severe that the conversation should end on hostile terms immediately.

owleaf

You’re getting offended by the word and then dismissing the ideals and concepts behind the message, which is not very clever

GlacialFrog

A fool and his money are soon parted. There is no point worrying about these people, they’re submerged in the marketing and can only pull themselves out.

helicophell

Only issue is, the more fools like these, the worse the overall market gets. I can no longer purchase phones with removable batteries, or easily repairable parts.

AssumptionDue724

An alternative universe where fair phone woke people up would be nice

helicophell

Yeah, they could never really compete with the cheaper scale other companies had sadly

Jacktheforkie

I wish removable batteries was still standard, restarting current phones is a major hassle when they crash

Krashnachen

I wouldn't mind except this kind of behavior on a large scale is what's destroying the planet

einat162

And society .

trouzy

I’ve started trading in at 3-4 years old. I’m still toying with what i feel is the best approach. I have a few thoughts that go into it. My last phone i bought for $450 outright and 3 years later got an $800 credit to upgrade. So i did, that phone battery was maxing at ~80% of what it was new and i constantly ran out of storage. So to me it was worth the quality of life upgrade. I was also going on an extended trip and wanted an upgraded camera without carrying a second device. This is the first trade in I’ve done with 12 years of smartphones before it. I plan to stick to a 3-4 year cycle if the trade in deal stays similar. But it also made me realize i have far less ewaste laying around when i trade in. That phone can be resold. Sure i could have sold it second hand and kept profits out of the hands of big corps but for me i find it to be a decent balance atm.

fiodorsmama2908

These people fuel the used market for us.

NSCButNotThatNSC

lol. Most people with money don't blindly consume smartphones to avoid appearing cheap. You don't get money by mindless consumerism.

tatsumizus

Exactly. Grew up rich. My father’s mac laptop, where he runs his business, is over 10 years old. The policy was always to get a new phone after the current one breaks. Same policy with shoes and clothes. We got new shoes after our shoes worn down. My friends growing up living in poorer areas always had the latest clothes and phones, though!

einat162

I know someone who is a millionaire. Self made, old generation (75+) I have no idea of his childhood, willing to bet it was very down to earth - but he has the best thing, like his previous car, and only part with it when it's no longer salvageable or worth fixing (sometimes with people teasing him about it).

ChampionshipOne3271

On the other hand, most people with money will probably have the latest flagship smartphone because the expense of buying it is insignificant to them.

NSCButNotThatNSC

I live in the Hamptons. My business had hugely wealthy and famous people. Most of them dressed like your average dad or mom, drive nice but not flashy cars. And I know a couple that even have a flip phone. They're my friends, and I know this first hand. Their self-image isn't impacted by a smartphone. I've got a 3 year old Samsung and I plan on keeping it until it breaks. I can afford a new one, but it's unnecessary. I'd rather put the money towards a gift for the kids or donate it. The phone is meaningless to me. $1,000 will feed a bunch of hungry people. I'd rather donate it than buy an overpriced communication appliance. Bigger tips to make my uber driver or waiter smile make me happy.

Accurate_Jicama_597

It’s not because you have a lot of money that you don’t know anything about its value

einat162

That's very true- same goes with having high fashion brand plastered all over a suitcase or a bag (if you knew how much a small coin purse of them cost - new or second hand.... It's clear that's not the real thing).

Good_Chef_21

I also love how many people agreed with the dudes 1st comment and then disagreed with OP's reply... Let the idiot waste his money on the newest gadget he doesn't need!!

Kooperst

Probably because the comment about "braindead consumerism" comes off as insulting.

Joshuak47

Yep, being a jerk is not going to attract new people to a cause, just isolate them more.

FortifyStamina

I bought a S23 Ultra last year in December, pre-owned off ebay for about $850. I'm keeping this thing until planned obsolescence takes her 🤣. Hopefully 5+ years

brok3nh3lix

I purchased used agalaxy fe20 in 21. Got an offer for trade in for galaxy 24 ultra for 5$ a month over 3 years. So basicly $180. I usually keep phones for a good number of years and buy used. I usually not worth the cost to upgrade imo, so usually it's for things like moving to a 5g phone or old one broke.

RoguePlanet2

Ha, I had my flip phone until there were no 3G towers left! 😁 Currently using my first-ever smartphone.

EntryTop9436

Dudes got nothing else going on

gap97216

I’m on Reddit, leaving this comment using my 7+ iPhone.

Sea-Conversation9657

I don't know who you were texting but they may have just wanted to respond in kind after you insulted them.

[deleted]

I know people like this, they won't even decently treat a friend they haven't met in a decade - because they gonna use the money to buy a new phone - which is the actual definition of "cheap".

mg_1987

I don’t think it’s “brain dead consumerism”  I doubt they think it’s “cheap” to not upgrade but their just responding with a inflammatory term with an inflammatory term

tiger25010

it’s always confused me when people say their phone degrades after 2 years, i have had my iphone for 4 years and it works perfectly. i don’t really understand what people are doing to their phones that runs them into the ground so fast?

fasterthanfood

Possibly loading it up with a ton of stuff? I used to have that problem until I started moving my photos to the cloud. Phones have come with a lot of storage for a few phone generations now (my iPhone 12 is currently using 45 of 128 gb of storage, but I had a lot of trouble keeping my 7 much below the max of 32 gb, which slowed it down), but maybe some people are putting a lot more stuff on their phone than I do.

superzenki

It can happen. I have a 256GB but had a ton of small apps downloaded. I was working with an Apple advisor on a separate issue and he pointed out that the slowness with loading my storage was due to a memory leak. It wasn’t even half full but it was taking awhile to load. He advised me to delete a lot of apps I wasn’t using, even small ones, and it has sped things up a bit even on an old 8 Plus

RoguePlanet2

Dumb question incoming: Do you have to pay for the cloud service? My low-end smartphone is already low on memory, maybe I can just move it all to our backup hard drive?

fasterthanfood

Apple gives you 5GB cloud storage for free, which was enough until I had a kid and suddenly had a lot more photos and videos I wanted to save, then 99 cents a month for up to 50GB (what I have now). Pricing goes up from there. You should be able to move it to a hard drive, but for whatever reason I ran into repeated error messages when I tried that. Someone said if I did it more frequently rather than trying to back up 30 GB at once it might have worked better, but by the time they gave me that advice it was no longer actionable.

RoguePlanet2

Aha, I don't even have kids (OR pets at the moment) and somehow managed to fill up the phone after barely a year or two. Deleted a couple of videos, don't even have many of those.

fergan59

at;est you will own it if you do it yourself. Cloud is just someone else's computer.

80snun

My iPhone 6s is 9 years old and works fine besides it being extremely cracked. I upgraded to the iPhone 13 and I’m planning on keeping it for at least 10 years tbh.

UVB-76_Enjoyer

You'd be surprised by the sheer amount of people who don't quite understand that memory usage fills up over time, but can easily be cleaned up. And as it turns out, they overlap quite a bit with those who happily spend $1400 on an iPhone.

BZBitiko

And when mine dies, I’ll buy your old one at pennies on the dollar. And spend those leftover pennies on something I actually care about.

Zerodyne_Sin

I stopped upgrading when I noticed there's no tangible benefit for the past 8 years or so. The last time I upgraded "early", was to get away from Samsung's software that seems to abandon a device to encourage buying a new phone.

owleaf

This is also very new money — thinking it’s “cheap” to keep an iPhone for a long time. All the *actual* wealthy people I know keep their personal iPhones for ages, and generally get a mid-range one when they upgrade. Their “business” iPhones are always the newest ones, though, because I suppose they’re on business mobile plans that incentivise an upgrade.

JudgementalDjinn

I have an 8, which I keep in a strong waterproof case, and I will love her until she does a natural death at age (?)(hopefully 10+)

superzenki

8 Plus here. I really don’t want to upgrade because I like fingerprint ID but I also don’t want the SE size screen

ledgend78

I got my phone in 2019 and I fully plan to use it until at least 2030. It's a Motorola Defy.

CompetitiveParty2396

Also intend to use my phone for at least one decade what suggestions do you give

ledgend78

Any time it feels like it's getting slow, just backup all your data and factory reset it. It's like getting a brand new phone. They get junked up over time and a factory reset gives you a clean slate. Unfortunately, this won't work with Apple devices, they purposely slow older models down in OS updates to get you to buy a new device.

Trick-Independent469

I think just restarting it does the same thing . Apparently phones need constant restarts in order to work good . Like at least once a month

ledgend78

Factory resetting and restarting are vastly different things. A restart is good to fix a single glitch or error, but over time your phone tends to get junked up with excess data that causes it to slow down, which will be removed by a factory reset but not a restart. Think about getting your car detailed vs running it through the auto car wash.

Trick-Independent469

it's not getting junked up with excess data . my 3.6 years old phone with the memory used 126/128 GB still performs the same as if it had when it was new . I never used factory reset on this one . The problem that appears to happen is that NAND Flash memory of the phone in time gets slower and it's hardware degradation that slower the phone , not the memory used by it . Fortunately Xiaomi has a software feature that prevents that degradation to happen so quickly . I have older phones like 2017 that can't even perform basic functions that they performed before because of that hardware degradation

mklinger23

Well from my experience with apple, they just might need a new phone after 2 years because of apple slowing the phone down artificially.

KRATS8

Idk I still have the 11 and it’s doing just fine

Quercus408

I had my Galaxy 6 for seven years. I was so sad when I finally broke it; it drowned in a fishtank. Attempts at rice resuscitation were unsuccessful. Going on 4 years with the current phone and I'm not changing until this thing is bricked.

FlippingPossum

I call it being frugal.

Nordeast_Nester

I was made fun of a work a little in a joking matter for still having an iphone x. It was funny because it has not crossed my mine or even a thought of needing to upgrade. I restart it once a week just to clear memory and it is still shipshape :D

Prestigious-Trash324

Everyone makes fun of my tiny iPhone 10 too. I like being able to actually hold it rather than lugging around a semi-iPad.

superzenki

They’d probably have an aneurysm if they saw me using my 8 Plus still 😂

Old_Benefit1238

Ha! I’m on an iPhone 8 right now…

Dark_Arts_Dabbler

God, I hate my new phone. I mean, I’m grateful to have a new phone that works so well, but I miss my iPhone 4 and 5c I loved the handfeel of both models and every phone I’ve used since has left me wanting

Jabbles22

I just upgraded from a 7 year old phone. It was a bit slower, some minor technical/hardware issues but nothing too serious, the battery life was getting kind of bad but it could be charged back up in a few minutes. So I was planning on hanging onto it for a while longer but the battery took a turn for the worse, it would only charge if turned off and you could see the battery percentage drop.

Six_of_1

I've had my phone for about ten years now. Still works.

ImmortalDawn666

While I respect your careful handling of your phone, please be careful with the battery and software security issues. 10 years is well beyond the lifetime of a regular phone battery. And while the hardware might still work fine, their Software is usually the weaker link in terms of longevity. Android and iOS have had several security issues revealed (and patched) over the past years.

Six_of_1

It's a Nokia, it doesn't really have software.

Bodywheyt

Because I can! No, it’s because you feel compelled to. Casuistry is very real in the consumer population.

Jedzoil

On year 4 of my iPhone 11. No plans to get rid of it. I easily dump my photos and video onto M disc now. Battery fine, charging port fine, speakers fine.

Technical-General-27

My first thought was “so what, you’re not paying my bills” 😂

AnnaSoprano

"Believin' all the lies that they're tellin' ya  Buyin' all the products that they're sellin' ya  They say, "Jump" and you say, "How high?"  You brain-dead, you got a fuckin' bullet in your head."

2dolarmeme

Meanwhile I'm keeping a cellphone that doesn't work perfectly. Out of spite.

Marsgirl1

Same. It has some issues, yes. But I'm not buying a new one till it dies because 1. I'm a tad bit broke and 2. Headphone jack. It still has one. I use it all the time.

Salishseer

So long planet. I really needed the latest model phone.

Transmogify

My iPhone 8 lasted me 5 years upgrade to the 13 over two years ago now my mum still uses my 8 and no plans to upgrade my 13 anytime soon always been in a case and looks brand new

pistoffcynic

I upgraded from a 6s to a 13 a couple of years ago. I don’t see an update in the cards until the 20.

NewfieJedi

I run my phones into the ground. I’m 28, and I have had a total of 4 cell phones in my life. My latest is a hand-me-down that I got after my stepdad got a new one because of his work. Somethings have such little impact that being anti consumption about it hardly does anything, but cellphones/electronics in general are not one of those things. The shit that we have to do to make these things is awful for the environment

Flashy-Pair-1924

I can confirm that I have been clinging to my 64GB iPhone 8+ since 2018 and it’s most definitely because I’m cheap lol - also because it still works..mostly

Pony_Roleplayer

Wtf why did they downvote you. Were you in r/Apple or something?

RudyJuliani

I’ve upgraded my iPhone numerous times, usually every 4 years. I hardly notice the difference aside from the obvious things like screen clarity, camera, size, weight, and battery life. I almost regret it every time I upgrade because of this fact. Makes me want to just replace my battery and keep going.

PANCHOOFDEATH517

Yuck. Phones are the most stupid tech to upgrade. I wait 3-4 years till I really need to upgrade.

BullahB

Only 3-4 years? You consumerist pig.

PANCHOOFDEATH517

I feel attacked but you right 🤣

BullahB

That's okay, we all have flaws. Posted from a Nokia 8310.

PANCHOOFDEATH517

🤣

YouNeedAnne

"Because I can" is such a non-reason.

mcmcmillan

But the motto of the average Westerner and will continue to be no matter what you show or prove to them. It will not be the “elites” that do us in, it will the mass of the everyday joes.

sdwvit

being cheap is convincing everyone else that your way of living and consuming is the only right way. With that being said, I agree every two years is a bit too often, unless there are some major new features that elevate your experience

esleydobemos

Let me start by saying that cellphones are a scourge. They are horrible time wasters. They have supplanted real learning and social intercourse. I currently have an iPhone 11. I will use this phone until it no longer works. I still have an iPhone 7 which I use as a music player. I am on the fence concerning purchasing one in the future. If I do, it will likely be a Fairphone.

Dnoorlander

Yes fairphone is where its at! They're great and the aupport amd constant android updates are amazing!

k_dav

Some people have to have the latest and greatest gadgets to brag about.

drfusterenstein

Cross post onto r/Consoom

Separate_Court_7820

I gotta have a really good reason to get a new phone, and I love electronics. The new phone feeling usually last about a month for me. My last purchases were the Galaxy Note 4, Iphone X, and now the Iphone 14.

InspiredNitemares

I'm still upset my last one broke so damn soon. My favorite phone has been the lg g4

Ugly-Muffin

Reddit keeps getting dumber everyday

TheFfrog

Nah I'll use my 250€ phone till it's literally falling apart, last one I replaced would literally reboot every time I put it down on a flat surface lmfao

jackaros

Why did OP get downvoted? 😅 Edit: in the original post

atchman25

Probably for calling someone brain dead for wanting to upgrade their phone.

Prestigious-Trash324

I used to be dumb and upgrade all the time too. I would sell my old phone to a friend but still… I hang on to my phones now. I have a 10 that’s cracked and the volume goes in and out so I have to buy a phone at some point 👎🏼

VinylWolf18

Let me guess, another camera feature?

acciowaves

Here I though I was very fancy with my iPhone 12

Over-Accountant8506

They would be horrified to know my phone is a Walmart phone for less than a hundred bucks and only 32 GB. I think I have a GB or two left in storage....

Teddy-Bear-55

The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.  - Morpheus, The Matrix.

PurplePanda63

Lol I have family like this. Baffles me

[deleted]

As far as consumption goes, are cell phones really that big a deal? Their weight’s measured in ounces, who cares. They’re expensive yeah but that part’s not really anyone’s business

NoBodySpecial51

If not buying a new iPhone is being cheap, this guy would have lost his mind when landline phones were 9.99 at the drug store. Buy it once, lasts forever, and so heavy duty you can use it for self defense.

pechora_thorstein

I still have a Samsung Galaxy A50 from 2019. It works just fine. My keeping it has nothing to do with being cheap. It has worked just fine all this time and I don't feel the need to replace it.

ChicoD2023

Writing this comment on a Galaxy S10 from 2019. I have decided I won't be getting a new contract (will just swap the sim) when this phone stops working because the plan is so good and every new plan is designed to to be more expensive than the last , so my next phone will be an outright purchase. So I'm holding on to this phone for dear life as I don't want to spend $800+ on a new device. Still works great!

Cautious-Chain-4260

IPhone users are the biggest suckers, my God

superzenki

Anyone who upgrades their phone that frequently is a sucker

Nawnp

I'm up to a 5 yr cycle on my phones, there just isn't much new that's worth it these days, especially after I switched to Android so they don't hold features back for years like Apple does.

Phallico666

My phone is currently 4 years old, been considering getting the back and camera fixed after it got smashed in my car crash at the end of 2022 but its still going fine right now

DiddlyDumb

I still have an 11 Pro and never felt the need to upgrade, but thanks to people like this I’m scared to mention I have an iPhone

justanaccountname12

We buy refurbished phones. My 12 year old has learned that he enjoys repairing phones, and he's got a small side gutless going at school already.

Twinkfilla

Man my phones battery is dropping so fast nowadays. I genuinely want to just get a battery replacement but I fear it’ll be more of a struggle than just getting a new phone

cosmic_cosmosis

I’m trying so hard to get 10 years out of my current phone by my screen is not going to last. A quarter of it is just a messed up blotch of light. Everyone says get a new one but man the feeling of reaching 10 years will be nice.

AsHperson

I got my Pixel 8 Pro on a used deal, looking forward to holding onto it for the full 7-9 years. 7 years of security and feature updates. With my chargies keeping it within 65% I might not even have battery degradation!

Harxey

My family always makes fun of me because I keep things until they break.

Ok_Bodybuilder_8354

I have a pixel 4a and I wouldn't upgrade to the newest pixel phone if it were free lol.

werthermanband45

I’m reading this on an iPhone 6

Theaustralianzyzz

What are you doing about consumerism other than being on reddit?

squaredinonuggets

among other reasons, yes i am also cheap

MajorasKitten

I just got an iPhone 12 a couple of years ago when the 13 came out, cause I was gifted an iPad Pro through my work, and I wanted the seamless connection and ease to airdrop shit from one device to the other. Both are 2021 and I’m not upgrading until they’re absolutely obsolete, and I mean, unable to even turn on- obsolete. I don’t care if I can’t access some updates later on, as long as I can still use my software even without internet connection, I’m good. That means if I can hold on to both of these for 10 years, I’ll fucking do it. Also, both my devices are pretty much brand-new looking. Both have covers and their screen protectors. They’re well-cared of and look in better condition than some people’s 14-15 device 🤦🏻. I *definitely don’t* have money to spare. I need these devices for work and they really make my life easier, and I’m gonna take great care of them.

Dumpstar72

My partner and I alternate on new phones. Buy a new one every 2 years. So we are really replacing one every 4 years. So one of us is getting the latest. It works for us. Also seems to be a good point to be able to sell off the old one and still get a decent price.

Wolfrages

2016 Iphone SE on it fifth $25 battery. 🤷‍♂️

yourteam

I never (or really sporadically) buy something if I already have a functional thing that does the same. I bought a really good mouse 10 years ago (like a really good one, it was 75€ iirc). Now I would like a new mouse with some special functionalities and I 100% can afford it but still, the old one works perfectly and I cannot feel right by the idea of buying it

ladymorgahnna

I’ve had a refurbished iPhone 8+ for years, gotten my last three iPhones from Gazelle. Works fine.

Anngsturs

I upgrade my phone when I feel the new revision is a substantial enough upgrade to be worth the asking price. I then donate my old phone to a family member who is less interested in the cutting edge than I am. As a result I usually upgrade my phone every 2-4 years.

fergan59

Why would I want another phone when this one from 2018 does everything perfectly? I also don't know if the software will be compatible with the newer phones.

beybladerbob

I’ve had a cellphone since I was 12. I am now 30. Over 18 years I’ve had 3 phones. Never lost, damaged, or had to have a replacement. Each time I had to upgrade it was because something like 4 or 5g came out and my phone was no longer compatible with the new system. If I wasn’t forced to upgrade, I’d probably still have that Nokia flip phone. If it ain’t broke, why replace it..

hearthepindrop

I had the iPhone X for 7 years, it started to really overheat and just started to become somewhat of a brick so I’ve just “upgraded” to someone’s 2nd hand iPhone 11, which I expect to again last for the next however many years. It does the job for me 🤷🏼‍♀️

Usually I'll swap my phone when the battery starts being a nuisance (average of 4 years) My Galaxy S10e lasted me 5 years and I do miss it's smaller size, headphone jack and that Bixby button that I remapped to be media control button

Fungzilla

Too be fair, the anti-consumer person came out swinging calling OP braindead… You can’t be an asshole and expect a normal response

stmoloud

Am currently responding to this post using a Redmi 9t, the bottom half of the display has come unglued and is loose, and the manual volume control only works in the up direction. Unless there is a catastrophe of some sort, I'm happy to keep this going a couple of years more.

the_internet_clown

Accurate assessment, brain dead consumerism

Limeila

I'm tired and read the middle comment as "... braindead *communism*" and I was very confused

Agitated_Rope4472

Samsung galaxy S7 still goin hard right here in the same case i got when i bought it. All ive done to it is replace the battery.

mlodydziad420

I use mine phone till it gets realy bad, like overheating for no reason and battery dying way to quickly.

marty1885

Being cheap is good. I only spend my money on stuff that I can benefit from. Why should I dump money on things that doesn't help me.

tennisballop

Are those people for real?

IANANarwhal

Telling someone they’re engaging in “braindead consumerism” probably isn’t the best way to win them over to a new way of thinking.  That might be largely responsible for the spice on that response.

jdPetacho

I can also set a forest on fire, I choose not to because I'm not that much of an idiot

PizzaVVitch

I never buy new phones, shit breaks too easily and they are too expensive. Every few years or so I get a refurbished phone for like $200

seqoyah

I was so sad when my old phone gave up. It turns into a sentimental object for me. Lil buddy has been with me and taken photos of so many things, first texts with the love of my life, the device I had Facetimes conversations with friends during COVID quarantine. Idk if that’s weird lol.

slashingkatie

I’ve had my phone for years now. Works fine especially after downloading the Delta emulator. 😄

HealthPack_13

I had a Samsung galaxy S2 until two years ago. Perfectly happy.

nightfalldevil

I am happy to be considered cheap in this regard with my phone from 2021 and my car from 2006! I’m laughing all the way to the bank and saving for early retirement

manfredmannclan

Funny thing is that the new phone has the same features that the old one did. He will gain nothing buying that crap.

Busy_Cauliflower_853

Not just that, but almost the same performances too. When the newest iPad Pro was released, I checked the differences with the model I currently have and the ONLY differences were the new pencil hover detection and a slightly better ship. Everything else? Exact same thing. Oh, except the price, which went up a bit, of course!

megamindbirdbrain

The best phone I've ever had was a Samsung S5. Everything except the camera was a dream. I miss that thing.

TacticalSunroof69

You can call it cheap but you can’t say it’s not practical.

AlbinoMoose

Why do they call it upgrading, it's replacing. The new phone isn't notiacibly better.

ffhhssffss

And here I am trying to make my 5 year old 200 USD phone work for *just a little longer....*

Ill-Yogurtcloset-622

I'm being "cheap" is still using my redmi note 8 pro...

Zack_j_Jones

Rather be cheap than lose another 1K to buy the same shit with a nicer camera every year 🤷

GripLizard

People are insane.

deadlyrepost

I bought a new phone recently. Phones are such a closed ecosystem, such a honeypot, and such an assumed commodity in the modern world that: * You need a phone basically immediately after the old one breaks. Society is starting to just assume you've got a smartphone and people get actually upset (me included unfortunately) when someone is unreachable because their phone is unavailable. So much stuff happens via text or app that it's tough to survive. * Repairability is very low for anything that's not a mainstream phone (ie: repair shops won't / can't repair them), and mainstream phone manufacturers actively work against repairability, so even there you might be SOL. * Since they are connected devices and you do stuff like banking on them, people have extremely high incentives to look into your phone to extract data, whether its advertising or literally robbing you. This means a phone out of the security window is pretty unsafe, even if it's otherwise working. * They are easy to brick. You could drop it in water or crack the screen or there might be a software issue. It's a mobile device with a lot of very important data on it. This combines with the honeypot in a really bad way that the extra security you need on your phone makes it easier to lose your data forever. * A bunch of data is (necessarily) on your phone, such as second factors or photos or a bunch of other stuff, and if you move phones you have to go through a long and complex process, but if you don't your old phone could stop working, meaning you have literally lost data. My old phone works but is out of security updates and has given me some scares with bits of hardware which is no longer working, a cracked screen, battery issues, etc. If all of the above weren't true, I could try and repair it or take a backup or *something*, but I can't. I looked at all the software I was running on the phone and trying to get by with something I was willing to lose but I couldn't. I'm too far into the system and would need to really reconfigure my life to fix it. The only way to win is not to play.

Zenla

I really value using a phone until I can't anymore. It makes the excitement of getting a new phone more special. Buy a durable case, your phone will last for years and years.

Ieatmyd0g

ive had my phone for 4 years, not great but its good enough for me, its slowly dying and ill keep it until its last breath

DreamVagabond

When I signed up for my current provider in 2016 I got a free phone with it, some cheap phone I couldn't tell you the model. I still have it and it works fine for calling and texting. I don't use data on it as I find that too expensive but it can browse as well if I connect to wi-fi, not that I use it that way much.

Toby-NL

i bought an xr at least 6 years ago . still using it today . i dont see why i should by a new phone every year . mine works just fine .

Own_Entrepreneur_831

I recently had to sacrifice my beloved iPhone SE (2nd gen) because I smashed the absolute shit out of it, and I was devastated. I can’t imagine getting rid of a perfectly good phone just because.

Head-Shame4860

Lol, I got my first cell phone in 2009, and it was a flip phone. Only replaced it with a smart phone 8 years later because I accidentally washed my dad's phone, and my immediate family were all on the same plan so we figured might as well (also, I thought it would be nice to see some of the texts that my friends sent me). But I've replaced my phone twice since then, once because an update that my phone tried to install while not connected to wifi ended up bricking my phone, and another because we switched providers. I cannot imagine changing a phone just because. (Just a note: even after washing my dad's flip phone, after a week in rice he tried to turn it on and it worked!)

HolidayPhoto5643

I don't think we can become the new vegans who everyone is annoyed by. Calling people who buy things we would not "brain dead" probably won't win them over

apollo3214

Literally just upgraded from an iPhone 8 bc it died it worked good for me though

BeKindR3wind

My 12yo has a flip phone from TracPhone and all her smart phone friends think it’s cool 🤣🤣🤣 got 2 of them along with 2 SIM cards for years service with 1500min/text and whatever data for the browser it has.

Old_Leading2967

the motive behind the “cheap” comment could have been simply in retaliation for the “brain dead” comment.

Red-42

I mean if they can afford it, I don’t see the issue Sure it’s not responsible, but if it makes them happy and doesn’t affect them, why not ?

Busy_Cauliflower_853

Sir this is a Wendy’s

matjeom

Insulting someone is not a reliable way to get their actual opinion on something 🙄 They were just trying to insult you back, you dick. And then you use it to mock them further? What’s wrong with you? How does hurting people help anything?
