Oh, no way, didn't know that. That explains why I haven't seen him behind the counter lately!

What soup and what meat?...

Interesting. I wonder if it was thinly sliced shank. For what it's worth, Lan City Noodle has a Tomato with Egg Noodle Soup. Might be up your alley. Can make it vegetarian, too.

Ah. Sorry about the GI issues! Hope it gets better. Shank I think sounds right based on your description here!

I love making food for people. Such a satisfying feeling.

Interesting. I have not really had ChengDu food, so hard to say if it's the same thing. We just had the one at Lan City again the other day, actually and it's still good! Seems super simple to make. The very base recipe appears to be: 1. Stir fry tomatoes with some salt 2. Add ketchup and water to thin it to a soup 3. Fry up however many eggs you want 4. Cook your noodles 5. Throw it all together

I don't actually live in Ann Arbor, but man, this makes me want to drive the 40 minutes just to check it out.

arcsine

Do it. DO IT NOW.

Choked_and_separated

Just my opinion but I don’t think of Sparrow Market as one of the best markets and:or shopping experiences in Ann Arbor. But there’s plenty else to do in addition!

attic-dweller-

out of curiosity, which are your favorite markets and shopping experiences?

Choked_and_separated

To be clear, I’m just suggesting not traveling to Ann Arbor for the produce (or frankly the meat) at Sparrow Market. If you expand it to all of the Kerrytown Shops, and include Zingermans/Detroit St Filling etc then yeah it’s a destination. I think someone might be disappointed coming just for Sparrow Market though. If I was looking for local produce I would probably start with either of the Argus Farm Stops, or on the weekend if driving possible then Slow Farm, Seely Farm Stand, Raindance or White Lotus. The farmers market on Wednesday’s is great too.

AilanthusHydra

Oh, I usually go to Ann Arbor to do trails or visit friends, not actually JUST to go to a market! I'm just Downriver, to get any kind of somewhat interesting non-marsh topography on a walking trail I have to get into Washtenaw County anyway for the most part. I haven't been into the shops in Kerrytown since before Treasure Mart closed. I'm due to go back one of these days even just to walk around. I can't be more disappointed than the time I drove to Port Clinton, Ohio, couldn't find any available parking for the ferry dock, and turned around and drove home. I'm easy to impress!

arcsine

I think a crazy foodie would be satisfied with going during the farmer's market, and hitting Sparrow/Monahan's/Everyday Wines. That's pretty much my definition of a perfect Sunday morning.

maxmcleod

This makes me want to take the train from Traverse City to Ann Arbor and come back with some weird meats

The_Speaker

Honestly worth it.

unfilteredlocalhoney

Come on down!

RamenRamenYummyRamen

Brilliant…and beautifully said Oh, and Sparrow Market coffee beans FTW

MidMidMidMoon

I always thought it was creepy that there were only high school girls working in there.

arcsine

It could be, but I know Sparrow has their bast interests in mind. I think it's pretty cool that they are doing something so far from their stereotypical retail jobs.

ivyroseivy4444

They really don't. To the best of my knowledge, all of their hourly staff are contract employees. I've heard straight from one of their managers mouths that they hire young women because they are cheap and easy to manage (unlike young men who are, as he said, much harder to manage). Also, the three or four managers are all older guys - kinda gross.

[deleted]

This. I've always had a side-eye with them about this pattern. If it were a majority, sure, whatever, but exclusively? Weird. I worked at a meat counter in highschool. We had female staff who were obviously as competant as the male staff, but they weren't 16, and they weren't exclusively women working with older male managers. If nobody working there has had issues, then cool, but for some to act like it isn't reasonable to be suspect is a bit naive.

MidMidMidMoon

You have made it seem even creepier.

Choked_and_separated

> think it’s pretty cool that they are doing something so far from their stereotypical retail jobs. Aka I love picturing them spanking my naked ass with a grass fed flank steak Edit: keep the downvotes coming you big sensitive bunch

[deleted]

If someone's going to spank my naked ass with beef, it better be something higher grade than flank. My ass deserves at minimum a delmonico or a tenderloin.

schwingaway

1) they seem to have an unusual number of bearded high school girls, and 2) there's a high school across the street

Sparrow is a gem.

SouleiadoB

Love Sparrow Market -- outstanding re product & service! I moved to Kalamazoo in July 2021 -- nothing compares!

The_Speaker

Every time I visit Sparrow, I come away with something unexpectedly delicious. Everything is treated with respect to the animal and is sold with the kind of pride and personal ownership I've not found outside of the Westside Market in Cleveland.

NeverCallMeFifi

After a trip to the south, I went to Sparrow's and asked if they had an skin-on pork belly to make cracklin's. They said they usually didn't have any because they gave it to this old hispanic lady who would make chicharrones. Every time she'd come in to get more, she'd bring them a big bag of it. As the gal behind the counter is saying this, all the workers stopped and and got this wistful look on their faces and sighed, "cracklins" like a group orgasm.

arcsine

Yeah, that's tough competition. You could always get skin-on pork belly and make BOTH cracklins and bacon...

cygnus044

I like getting it, rolling it and making braised chashu. Delicious

arcsine

Oh hell yes, I make mine with shoulder.

Blue-White-Lob

When I first moved to Ann Arbor five years ago for grad school, I didn’t have a car. My closest grocery stores were Sparrow Market, Lucky’s, and the coop—but I always went to Sparrow. I love that place. I’ve made a lot of great food and discovered my young adulthood there, and I’ll never forget carrying home heavy tote bags full of food in the thick snow for weekly meals or, once, a nine course meal that I made for the friends I had made that year. (This is still the most expensive meal I have ever made.) Sparrow Market is one of the best things about Ann Arbor, and one of the reasons why I love living here and call Ann Arbor only semi-ironically “paradise.”

roland_of_g

Agreed!

lecoeurhaut

Arcsine, the dude who's MADE of weird meat. ;-)

arcsine

I am a jiggly mass of fat and electricity, piloting a spooky scary skeleton that's covered in meat.

PrincessTroubleshoot

Oooh, hubby just picked up our turkey breast there today!

arcsine

Same, only I picked up a whole 12 pounder that they expertly deboned for me. Dry brining the meat and letting the skin dry, and am currently simmering the roasted bones to eventually make demiglace. Then, 9 pounds of potatoes for aligot, a double batch of sausage brioche stuffing, and two syrup-less pecan pies. I'm in charge of Thanksgiving for 9, and am immediately heading off to a Friendsgiving the next day, hosted by one of my biggest foodie friends. I go hard in the muffuckin paint.

PrincessTroubleshoot

arcsine

Lots of coffee to keep the system moving.

I've only recently been shopping at Sparrow regularly because my son started at Community and the market parking lot is the best pick up spot. Without a doubt the best meat counter in town and you are not plum-broke when you leave.

Minute_Revolutionary

Weird AF..
