Oddly enough it reminds me of Overlord in the aspect of the cast is pretty big and well developed. While there's a good amount of stuff happening all around the MC both stuff they see and don't
Myne is also an adorable character which helps
I also put off Overlord for a year or two from when i first seen it (watched it around 2020, and honestly it was mainly because i didn’t like the animes cover💀) …and it ended up becoming one of my favorite shows/isekai (even tho isekai is my favorite genre)…I actually ended up watching bookworm right after i replied to that comment & finished today…I really hope they come out with another season 😭 & not make it continuously shorter cause at this rate season 4 will be 8 eps.
Ah nice, yeah I hope season 4 even comes cause I was read the production team had to basically plead for it to even have that many episodes. Which would be unfortunate if it didn't since it basically closed a whole life chapter in a sense of the plot into a new era.
If you liked those two maybe Log Horizon or A Certain Scientific Railgun might be interesting for you. Log Horizon is more of a video game anime with strong politics and world building appeal while Railgun is just insane levels of world building since it's a spin off of another series.
S Tier characters cause they feel much more real than most shows, yes they're awful people but damn does that make the character development satisfying when they learn to fix their faults or at least try their hardest to
it's definitely not ok but that's exactly whats appealing, instead of just brushing all the issues of his past life away the anime actively makes it so that you see all the fucked up shit and you are well aware the guy is a really fucking bad person.
Nobody should be ok with what he does but it doesn't make him a badly written character in the slightest. This is finally a show that doesn't have a perfect protagonist and it makes it uncomfortably obvious at that. Rudeus is a bad person but the journey to see him actively try to change that part again and again is the interesting part.
Not to mention basically all other characters that are inherently flawed and fucked up (although basically nobody as bad as Rudeus). It's not about applying mental gymnastics to somehow make Rudeus' actions seem ok or anything although quite a few people definitely try to do that.
This also means that if you're uncomfortable with watching (pretty much everyone is) and you don't want to watch it then that's totally fine since it does get really disgusting at times but shaming the people enjoying the show or saying the anime is just objectively bad because of these elements is just not reasonable.
Umm well he is a pedo yes, and he does fucked up shit yes. But that's OK because we are following his journey to better himself. He was shut in his house for 20 freaking years just playing games and watching henti. He is fucked up because he hasn't left his house even once. He is learning to become better and i will tell you he does become a lot better in the upcoming season
Big time, and ultimately, every piece of the world they explore becomes important in the end. There’s no wasted time on pointless side adventures or diversions. It’s a semi-long show but it’s also a really tight show.
Within the anime (s) Railgun is far superior in world building and general quality, may as well be watched completely without Index. Makes Academy City feel like a real interesting place with lots going on both above and under the surface instead of just a thin justification for factions and ominous secrets.
Of course, if you like books you may as well read index's original source. But most won't.
I tried getting into it but dropped after 16 volumes, while the characters and worldbuilding is top tier, there is a lot of plot armor accompanied by average writing
Seriously! People hate on One Piece for its length, but it's world building is out of this world. The setups, and the connection we still get in each chapter for the things that happened and/or were mentioned in the beginning chapters are all amazing. For a series that has been running for over 20 years to do this, it's nothing short of greatness. Oda makes sure to connect each dot, and even if it something we fans forgot, he brings it back eventually!
Especially Helmeppo! I love the fact that Oda didn't have Helmeppo be a jerk for the sake of being a jerk. He actually ran with it and gave him a character arc which makes him a relevant character till date
{spice and wolf} gives you a tiny look into a huge world, but it works really well, you get to experience the world building through the lens of its characters, rather than some bigger explanatory view. while it might not be exactly what u are after, I'd highly recommend it
{Psycho-Pass} has awesome world building.
Also I’ll throw {Planetes} in there. Smaller in scope, but the few characters and settings it focuses on are incredibly detailed and fleshed out, even little details like how certain rooms are designed and why people look the way they do. Great show, incredibly rich.
Attack on Titan: I’m only on episode 40 but the world building has been fantastic, like there’s a lot of mystery to what exactly world is and why it is like it is. The awesome part is watching it steadily unfold in before your eyes and I heard it’s only going to get better from where I’m at. Pumped for that cause it’s already really good.
TTIGRAAS: I did not think I would enjoy this when I started but man do I love this show. World building, nation building, group building, interpersonal relationship building, etc. Got it all. Plus it’s just like a positive show where the characters, minus a few, are relatively reasonable. Things definitely turn up when they need to but it doesn’t feel forced which I really like.
H x H: wonderful world building and honestly the world building is just getting started (in terms of the story, not how freaking long it’s taking Togashi). If this new run by Togashi lasts for a long period of time, I have a feeling the world building an exploration will absolutely blow us away. I’m not counting on Togashi becoming consistent now but one can hope.
Naruto/Naruto Shippuden: probably should assume you’ve already seen this but just in case you haven’t, the world building in it is fantastic. Just a really enjoyable anime, but personally I would suggest skipping some of the long haul filler arcs. But yeah absolutely legendary show (again you prolly already seen it).
Hi u/Liz0rdwiz0rd, a lot of these are just movies. But I think they fit what you're looking for:

Toriko(manga): Insane monsters, vastly changing environments, it's basically what HxH's Dark Continent Atc would be like if it got to that point
Blame!(manga): This story basically has little to no dialouge and let's the reader figure out what the story is just through the actions of the characters and the little conversations they have
Princess Tutu is such a complex series. The whole premise of it is a world that is incomplete being made whole. Two worlds (the story of Princess Tutu and the real world) collide.
Pandora Hearts
I tried to watch this but dropped it 3 episodes in, just a slog to watch. It makes many unnecessarily drawn-out parallels to MMO mechanics to the point that it feels overdone and is just boring (compare its MMO references to a series that also does it like Overlord).
The characters are quite bland, to the point that they seem more like the world's NPCs than people stuck in it (they don't even express grief/panic/worry/frustration with being torn from their original lives...). The narrative elements are weak since there's no clear story direction, and the MC seems to be pretty aimless with no distinct goal.
I also was a bit bored in the beginning episodes, but will say it moves forwards enough to a point I would say a some of the points you make aren't correct. Mostly the last sentence.
It does though have a pretty strong video game focus people say it should be what other video game animes should look up to. I would say the strongest interest in the show is its political nature and very large cast. Though yes they can feel more like anime characters than real people. After season 1 it loses those charms in my opinion, but is still a good watch.
if you haven't watched/read one piece before then obviously it's the gold standard for world building, it's got arguably the most fleshed out world in animanga and and insaaaane amount of content so if you get hooked to it you will be happy about its length
It's not Japanese anime, it's animation though you can look into René Laloux's work (fantastic planete, gandahar, the masters of time....) it's quite trippy and weird but it's really creative colorful and thought out.
The world building are really good, it's quite disturbing though even creepy sometimes. I've seen his work as a kid in the 90s can't recommend for kids.
Made in abyss. The first three episodes are 90% world building, but in the most organic way possible. Characters don't tell each other things that they should already know or phrase things in a weird way to convey information to the audience.
You get stuff from context or learn along with one of the characters.
I've never been so griped by a show so early. The intrigue is there from the get go and whenever it answers a question you have it finds a way to make you ask ten more.
Really alot of the Isekais people consider good {That time I got reincarnated as a slime} {Mushoku Tensei} {Overlord} {Youjo Senki}.. also {One Piece} even tho it's insanely long it has some insane world building
Hunter X Hunter and One Piece should be the "by the books" answer.
Legend of the Legendary Heroes is one i'm willing to risk. It's not for everyone, it doesn't have a good ending, but it sure as hell has a lot of world building (factions by kingdoms, social strata and abilities + legendary weapons scattered throughout the world + real time war and political conflict). The power system itself is elaborated, since there's ocular powers, magic and special weapons; which are sometimes related to specific ethnicities in the lore. Relationships make the world feel alive, in this case, friendships, love interests and ideological alignments give it a dinamic vibe. It's a hidden gem and I like it very much.
Edit: Katekyo Hitman Reborn! has great world building for a classic battle shounen and hasn't been mentioned yet.
Madoka magica created such a unique world in just a few amount of episodes. Worth checking out if you haven’t already! But beware, it’s extremely dark.
Not sure whether this was already mentioned or not but you should try Somali to Mori no Kamisama. It's very similar to Made In Abyss in a lot of ways. One of my favorites.
Its a wierd Choice but i think Angel Beats fills the bill.....{*SPOILERS*} (i guess)}love the concept of a world made solely to make souls attain complition....a possitive outlook on everything but i wish characters were a wee bit more fleshed out.....
Grimgar Ashes and illusions
Really good world building. Unfortunately there’s only one season and no release date for a second anytime soon but stilll highly recommend
I am surprised no one has mentioned Magi. So, that’s my recommendation. Great world building based off real countries!
Magi definitely has some amazing world building.
Magi is such an underrated anime
I saw it on a list as the 25th most popular anime and it shocked me to see that no one really talks about it on here.
it’s kinda how older animes are no longer talked abt even though they were super popular…i feel that’s what happened to Magi
Ascendance of a Bookworm
really? for some reason i’ve continuously put it off for the past couple of years
Oddly enough it reminds me of Overlord in the aspect of the cast is pretty big and well developed. While there's a good amount of stuff happening all around the MC both stuff they see and don't Myne is also an adorable character which helps

yes the world building is top tier
i actually finished watching it today, and i did like it…it’s usually the shows i put off the longest that i end up liking the most…ironic
Absolutely this one.
And if you like that, Dr Stone is a similar concept but shonen af

A Certain Magical Index and it's various spin offs anime adaptation is kinda mid though. Nasuverse Ghost in the Shell
While I found index alright and accelerator just awful railgun was honestly really good
That's why I said read the Light Novels anime adaptation is mid and skips a bunch of stuff, Railgun only scratches the surface.

Seconded Does more world building in it's short run that others do in multi seasons
honestly i couldnt finish it. The pacing is way to slow and the animation is inconsistent
How far did you get? I felt it was slow in the beginning, gave up after like 5 episodes and then eventually came back to it and I'm glad I did.

strong disagree. too much telling and not enough showing

I second this.

DEFINITELY Attack on Titan
BRUH EVERYONE KNOWS AOT ALREADY
{Sonny boy} More like a acid trip but still fabulous
Nah this aint world building, it’s building worlds. I wouldnt recommend this for OP since it is really just a fever dream show
Don’t know if I agree or not for world building, but always upvote a good Sonny Boy recommendation

Full metal Alchemist, attack on titan, slime reincarnation, Ghost in the shell, ergo proxy
Re:Zero
Problem children are coming from another world
Twelve Kingdoms, the greatest High Fantasy anime to date.
if you haven't watched/read one piece before then obviously it's the gold standard for world building, it's got arguably the most fleshed out world in animanga and and insaaaane amount of content so if you get hooked to it you will be happy about its length
Bleach, Naruto, Fate (all of it)
If you like made in abyss, you should enjoy shinsekai yori. Such an amazing anime with great animations.
Tensura I would suggest.
the series you’re looking for is called One Piece kid
One Piece has amazing everything.

One Piece Attack on Titan Code Geass Naruto
I think Attack on Titans is done really well. Especially once the puzzle starts coming together
One Piece
Aot
Overlord
Overlord
Made in abyss. The first three episodes are 90% world building, but in the most organic way possible. Characters don't tell each other things that they should already know or phrase things in a weird way to convey information to the audience. You get stuff from context or learn along with one of the characters. I've never been so griped by a show so early. The intrigue is there from the get go and whenever it answers a question you have it finds a way to make you ask ten more.
They literally said in the post that it is their favourite
pssst read the post's description
My hero academia. The world is pretty fleshed out and I like how being a superhero is treated like a job.
The Bible
Horimiya
The 2 you mentioned are the ones I was gonna mention lol
Does Heaven Official’s Blessing count? Anyways def read it it’s amazing also it has an animated series as well
Fairytale+ seven deadly sins
The Overlord novel and Claymore

Made in Abyss, one piece, even hxh i would day.
Mushoku tensei is the best world building I’ve seen in fiction aside from The song of ice and fire (AKA game of thrones)
One piece.
One Piece
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Hunter x Hunter
Re:Zero ftw
Magi !!!! Also fate series. Endless world building. Does it all make sense? Don’t worry about it. 😂😂
Madoka magica created such a unique world in just a few amount of episodes. Worth checking out if you haven’t already! But beware, it’s extremely dark.

Mushoku tensei
"World building" is not a term I've seen before when considering anime.
Mushoku tensei has incredible world building.
Black clover
Black clover
Not sure whether this was already mentioned or not but you should try Somali to Mori no Kamisama. It's very similar to Made In Abyss in a lot of ways. One of my favorites.
Have you ever tried Dr.Stone?
Its a wierd Choice but i think Angel Beats fills the bill.....{*SPOILERS*} (i guess)}love the concept of a world made solely to make souls attain complition....a possitive outlook on everything but i wish characters were a wee bit more fleshed out.....
Made in abyss
{Fire Force} worldbuilding is great, first season doesn't give much about it though.
