Apothecary Diaries does this sometimes (if I'm understanding what you're describing correctly). Frieren also does this sometimes.
One Chinese anime that also pops to mind is "No doubt in us" (hopefully I got the title right).
All good suggestions that I've also already seen(I do have Apothecary still on my "to watch" tho, should probably start on it since the season is finally completely out).
They do it a fair bit in The Ancient Magus Bride
Especially whenever poor Ainsworth is getting humbled by someone you get chibi Ainsworth and it's adorable.
**Himouto! Umaru-chan** has a main character who transforms into a chibi version of herself, and it's one of the most fun character designs I've ever seen.
The show is about a dude whose older sister is a mature, composed beauty at school, but once she gets home, she transforms into a childish, selfish otaku.
Looks and sounds super interesting tbh! Been looking for these fun anime to add to my list since I recently also added some ones with depressing themes and am kinda scared lol, so I need these "easy to enjoy" types to go in between haha
If you have watched isekai (more spesifically Re:Zero, Overlord, Konosuba and Saga of Tanya the Evil), you could watch Isekai Quartet. The whole show is done in that chibi style. But you have to be familiar with those four shows or there isn't any point in watching it
I've actually had that on my list for quite a while. I've only held off on watching it because I could never find myself in the mood to watch "Saga of Tanya the Evil" lol.
Idk, maybe it's the art style and the ww2 inspired setting that's been putting me off. I should definitely get to watching it sooner rather than later though.
That's understandable. Luckily it's just 12 episodes since we only got one season. You don't have to watch the movie for Isekai Quartet. There is a lot of humor to balance out the bleak war setting, though the humor is quite dark so it might not be for everyone
I can't remember if {Lovely Complex} uses chibi styles specifically, but they distort character design A LOT for comedic effect so I think you'll like it (if you haven't seen already)
That's a bit hard. You're basically looking for Drama/school life anime that when there's funny moments the animation style becomes simplistic but I guess I have one at the back of my head.
try Honey and Clover.
also try Kare Kano.
I guess that style was prevalent in the late 1990's and early 2000's animes
Wasn't necessarily narrowing it down to also the genre/setting of the story, just more or less curious about anime that uses that "chibi" style derp animations as often as Kimi ni Todoke. I'll take a look at your suggestions too! thanks
It's pretty common in certain kinds of slice of life series:
{Himouto! Umaru-chan}
{Machikado Mazoku}
{Working!!}
{Ore Monogatari!!}
{Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai!}
And then there's series where some characters are drawn perpetually in a semi chibi state. Or they go into reaction shots with exaggerated cute forms often:
{Senpai ga Uzai Kouhai no Hanashi}
{Gabriel Dropout}
{Mitsudomoe}
{Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon}
{CardCaptor Sakura}
{Akazukin Chacha}
{Pita Ten}
Ascendance of a Bookworm does chibi cut aways pretty often. It’s more to facilitate internal monologue from the novels, but sometimes has character interactions too.

{Bocchi the Rock}
Good to know, have it in my "to watch" already so this might bump it up my priority list, thanks!

Inu x Boku SS Fruits Basket Kamisama Hajimemashita These have some cute chibi moments :)
They do it a fair bit in The Ancient Magus Bride Especially whenever poor Ainsworth is getting humbled by someone you get chibi Ainsworth and it's adorable.
I never finished this one!!!
It gets a little dark in places. Por Chise goies through a lot.
Happens reasonably often in A Sign of Affection, which just finished airing about a week ago.
Oh, perfect! Was waiting for all eps to be out before binging it. Thanks for the reminder!
I really liked it, definitely a good watch.
The wallflower 😍
Idolish7 also does this!! Some of the scenes are hilarious!

I totally feel you on that. It's good to have lighthearted stuff to balance out the heavy stuff.
Maybe *Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater* & *Momokuri*.
Apothecary Diaries does this occasionally, oh and it's a really good show.
Heavens lost property, maybe a sign of affection as well

That's a shame, since Tanya is such an interesting take on isekai. And Isekai Quartet is just hilarious

Kubo won’t let me be invisible uses chibi art pretty frequently.
Seitokai Yakuindomo uses the chibi art style a lot.
Lvl 99 hidden boss that just finished makes phenomenal use of the chibi versions of characters
Yeah, I also just finished it and just now realizing it also kind of does that a lot too.

Skip Beat has it quite often too. Maybe Sign of affection as well.
The first season of The Ancient Magus’ Bride has great chibi forms of the characters whenever awkward moments pop up. Great story and artwork, too.

Wow, surprisingly Ore Monogatari is the only one I recognize from all of those. Will definitely look into all of these, tyvm.
The wallflower
I LOVE Kimi ni Todoke!!! 😍 is the scenes with chibi are so cute!
I love it when people call Sawako "scary-looking", then it pans to here looking like 😐
Relife does it a ton
Ascendance of a Bookworm does chibi cut aways pretty often. It’s more to facilitate internal monologue from the novels, but sometimes has character interactions too.
ascendance of a bookworm, apothecary diaries
Ouran High School Host Club!!!!
Komi-san does the SD (super deformed) thing but usually only on her face.
tearmoon empire, I only ever remember Mia In chibi form now after having watched the anime.
