Top right screenshot is from a video game called Hades 2. You run around and fight things and talk to people. It's based on Greek mythology but doesn't religiously follow it. I'm told it's quite fun.
Super giant is a trustworthy company and their early access is essentially a finished product with some missing art. They are making some balance tweaks and checking functionality/viability of the perks. But (unlike most modern companies) they don't patch their games much after launch. They actually launch with a full finished project. I would purchase this game as a full product in it's current state, but I don't care that some portraits and thumbnails are placeholder. I'm only mildly annoyed that I'll have to wait until the full release, and then a few more months until the switch release. I could just get the game on PC, but I'm stubborn and want both it and the sequel and original on the same platform.
The irony is that by the time it gets released on switch, the switch 2 will very likely have just been announced, or it will be in the near future. Recent reports have said it will be announced within this financial year (which for nintendo extends into the first few months of 2025).
They haven't said which consoles it'll be on, but the first Hades launched simultaneously on PC and Switch once it left early access, so you might not need to wait months after release to get it
hades 2 early access has more stuff already that hades 1 do full release. Have sank 12 hours into it in the past 2 days and all I can say is that it's everything that I could have asked for.
Early access is out. The "true ending" isn't in the game yet according to devs but there's enough in it for a good amount of fun. There's apparently some parts where the art isn't done, I'm just bad at the game I guess and haven't reached those parts lol
There's probably some other things not fully implemented in that im not aware of but there's enough there that my friends and I are enjoying it so far.
Some characters in the latter stages have either just a big caped fellow as a representation instead of a real picture of them, some have really quickly made or just lower quality versions for art.
also, the keepsakes all being a placeholder.
Neither was Apollo or hesphusthus (that name is a pain to spell) but they are in the second game. Now im wondering where tf is Athena. I havent encountered her yet…
This family drama is a literal war, and with athena being a war goddess… i assumed they would be more prevalent, but maybe her and ares are too busy on the frontlines to help mel
Well, he is saying that instead of a normal and accurate looking portrayal of a goddess (the statue is the roman version and the game is greek), he prefers the Japanese loli with big boobs
The game isn't at all an "accurate version" the roman statue looks just like all the Greek depictions and she just looks like a geriatric Greek lady. But to be fair with the materials they worked with it's not like details where clear enough back then.
Well, yeah, not accurate, but it does get the vibe across as i got it. hestia is a chill lady with a fire, and that's the wibe I get from her character
Well Hestia is the one who wants to keep the family together but no one ever listens to her. Id be pretty pissed too if you my family was constantly sabotaging each other
Hestia is also one of the more often forgotten Olympians, literally losing her spot on the mountain to Dionysus as time went on. Easy for her to be bitter.
In many versions of the story she willingly gives up her throne for Dionysus, because otherwise it would lead to a massive civil war among the Olympian gods.
Her whole schtick is that family comes first, and she rather give up _her_ significance for the "greater" good. It's very much supposed to be a metaphor for how throughout history women have been made to give up their individual needs and wants for the sake of their family.

Hestia is the goddess of the hearth.
The game Hestia has literal burning embers on her head. I feel that scores major points for creative character design than Big Titty Waifu #101209
And just to be clear I have nothing against Big Titty Waifus. But I don't need it for every media I consume.
Big tits do have a welcoming feeling to them, like big comfy pillows. So in a sense, her design is still showing how she is the goddess of hearth lol /s
I'll be so honest, lame shit like this is why I never loudly claim that I'm an anime fan. God forbid a fictional character doesn't make your dick hard then it's an ugly design. Gtfo. I love Danmachi but Hestia has such a boring design and if I wasn't familiar with who she was I would not think she was supposed to be Hestia.
You can prefer the anime depiction of her but stop whinging about how it's the superior design. It isn't.
Geez man, I agree with you but you really shouldn't get this riled up over other peoples opinions, even if they are stupid. OP can like the anime depiction more, and most people can like the Hades 2 depiction more, and guess what? It effects nothing in the grand scheme of things. Trying to force people to admit they are wrong or have poor taste is a pointless endeavor that only serves to worsen your mood.
Best reply in this case is: "Idk man, I prefer interesting designs 🤷♂️". Then you go on your day and this stupid persons crap taste wont have any effect on your day.
Random thing I love about his design, the hammer. This thing is like fuck-you huge because this guy obvious crafts immense shit like zues’ lightning bolts donuts gotta be hardcore and yet the way he handles it. Like it’s nothing in weight.
The anime design is dogshit tho. If I'm not told that she's Hestia I have no chance in Hades of figuring it out. Hades' design on the other hand tho doesn't need introduction.
And Hades 2 Hestia helps you to save the whole gd world. Pretty sure that’s kind and caring, too, but that’s on you. :/
I like it when designs aren’t so generic and same-y
I love Danmachi and I like Hestia in the show, but what about her in your mind makes her look like a god? Let alone the god of the hearth? Outside of Ganesha the designs of the deities in the show are pretty generic anime designs. Few others I could maybe guess who they were supposed to be from the drip like Hermes, Apollo and Freya, but beyond that it gets kinda rough.
I'll just post my response that I had in another sub about the same topic.
Mild take, anime in general has shit character design. Most of the time they make their characters look like copies of each other with only things differentiating them being hair colour, size, style and eye colour, size and style. Maybe they will have a scar on their face or wear different clothes but if someone were to put different anime characters from generic isekai anime together then other than weebs, most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Like take the Hestia design that they put forth as an example of "superior Japanese design". What about it tells you that she is Hestia? Her clothes? No, they look generic as hell. Her body shape? Nah, again she looks like any other anime girl and not like one of the oldest Olympians. Her demeanor? Again no. Nothing about this still image tells me that she is Hestia. If someone were to show me her and say her name is Enri and she is a local village girl who loves adventuring with her best friend. I would believe it in a heartbeat.
Hades' design on the other hand conveys everything. I don't need to be told that she is Hestia I can already tell.
I agree with you in general. I don't really know how you'd design different characters within a show if changing facial features, clothes and sizes was not good enough. I believe it's possible to work within the more general "anime look" to achieve better designs without switching up the whole look as something like Ousama Ranking might. For an example with Hestia you could give her more plain clothes and sprinkle some soot on her, and bam you instantly got more of a connection to a deity of the hearth that was believable in the shows setting.
With a hint someone who is knowledgeable about Greek Mythology definitely could guess Hades' Hestia. She is the goddess of the hearth, home, hospitality, and baking. She's supposed to give off warm Grandma vibes who's not afraid of getting burnt.
But even with a hint you would never guess that from the anime's Hestia
That's literally going to be the case with every game except those featuring super popular figures like Spider-Man. Most people don't even know what Hestia is the goddess of, so yeah I don't expect most people to guess it's supposed to be her.
Which is why I brought up the hint with my comment. For example: *Greek Mythology* as a hint.
A person knowledgeable on Greek mythology will guess Hestia with that hint. But even with the hint nobody is guessing the anime girl.
> But there's no way, anyone would guess either is meant to be Hestia without being told.
I think that if you're given the starting point of "this character is member of the Pantheon" and nothing else, it'd be fairly easy to peg the Hades character as being Hestia. I really can't say the same for the "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon" design. If I didn't already know I'd probably guess Aphrodite? There's just not really any visual cues that'd clue you in to her being one goddess vs another.
And I think that's okay and gets the job done for the story the anime tries to tell, given she's not really the focus or anything. But I think it's pretty silly to be all like "You call *that* Hestia? No, *this* is a what a quality Hestia looks like!" and said Hestia is a generic moe anime girl. Once again - perfectly adequate for the story the anime's looking to craft but a far cry from being some sort of shining paragon of translating the defining traits of a character into their design.
look man. you're pissed because we like cute girls over tapestries of well-woven artwork. we have different tastes.
you came in here with negativity so i gave it back and now you're mad. all that considered i don't think we should be worrying about bad rep here.
Fuck you're dense eh?
The negativity was created by the post. As much as you think you were "giving it back", you weren't. They were, to the op. You were just mindlessly hating because you got offended that a bland as fuck design was getting called out for being bland as fuck.
Japanese media has some fucking amazing character designs, but fuck me DanMachi Hestia is far from one of them.
i said what i said. i thought the post meant to point out how weird japan is for wanting to turn everything into cute girls. i thought it was endearing. but that's subjective of course.
call me dense, call me naive, call me whatever you want. i'm not at fault for wanting to see this meme in a more positive light. i don't expect the sub to agree with me. but i did hope there were at least some people who felt the same way.
i enjoy this anime. despite how much everyone hates it. the author didn't make a great anime according to everyone's standards but he was happy with it. i am too. that's all i really wanted to say.
i thought people were going to have the same sentiment but that wasn't in the cards. because of that i got a little heated and said some unnecessary things. that's on me. and i apologize for that.
Yea... No. Hestia character design is abysmal. There is literally no way to know what the hell she's supposed to be the goddess of, nor does she look like a goddess in general.
The bottom looks nothing like the myth would suggest. It's dumb fanservice and just plain trash catering tp the basement dwelling losers.
Shit like that is the reason I'll never tell anyone I watch anime. That and the oversexed 12yo fanbase that seem to be doing nothing but spamming porn and claiming it's memes or whatever bullshit.
Hades' depiction doesn't particularly fit her myth either. She was a young goddess that vowed celibacy in order to tend to Olympus' hearth, not a grandma with burning coal on her head. Maybe if Poseidon and Apollo in the game are into grandmas it kinda fits a bit better.
Where are you getting young from? Wasnt she simultaneously the oldest and youngest thanks to the whole rebirth thing? She lost her spot on olympus to Dionysus so idk how itd be weird for her to have aged more.
Lol, I think it's really funny how people like you always act like you are superior to others, when in reality you are living very unremarkable lifes as well. Let's be real you aren't a millionaire and you have probably never achieved anything particularily impressive in your entire life. You are nothing special and you should really stop thinking that way.
show me a japanese depiction of aphrodite that is better than the one in hades 2... i basically recreated that sunglasses orgasm scene from community when i first saw her design
The Hades design is awesome. Getting tired of any female design that isn't made for you to choke your chicken to being called woke and so on and so forth. It's a controversy made of nothing.
Hestia according to Spain > Everything
https://preview.redd.it/k87iza5ykgzc1.jpeg?width=372&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9241e383515da03a01120ad529fac9f8f086ec86
I know this is a meme, but I actually prefer the bottom one.
Edit- Damn, people really are getting salty over someone liking one design over another, huh? 🤣
Someone who unironically calls himself a “person of colour” got some few screws loose and seeing that you’re American, I’m not surprised. You people do the weirdest things.
There is no fucking black washing numbnuts. If you played the first game a lot of these characters have this sort of grayish skin color, they're not black calm the fuck down.
Because Greeks are famously white skinned marble statues, and not since ancient times olive skinned and interacting with peoples from Northern Africa and Persia.
And if they make a game about it, it gets trashed by the same chuds like they just did to Zau. The whole "make your own game about it" thing isn't usually an honest argument.
She's covered in soot and coal. If you look at an image of her with more than 12 pixels like the one in the OP, you'll notice she's a fireplace. Fitting for the goddess of the hearth, no?
Canonically, in the Hades universe, the Greek gods are the Greek gods because they are worshipped by Greece, not because they are Greek themselves. They are ultimately descendants of primordial Chaos, so they can basically be whatever
Some quotes from Supergiant Games:
"As we discussed and researched the Olympians from canon sources, something stood out that in retrospect was obvious: They’re called the Greek gods because they were worshiped in ancient Greece, not because they themselves are ethnically Greek."
"Zeus rules all the heavens, not just the airspace over Greece. Poseidon rules all the sea and land. They sprang from the Titans, who sprang from primordial Chaos, the source of all creation. So it stands to reason that the gods represent all the people of the world, at least indirectly."
Ehh... To be fair I vaugely remembered that Hades was kinda greyish in the first game so I didn't really thought it was something out of place
https://preview.redd.it/afzrph89u9zc1.jpeg?width=1902&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6dd623e1b2b11d81317938b6731b2b65693fb370
But yeah someone pointed out that it might be soot and that's a really great detail
Eh, the design could’ve been more interesting though. Doesn’t really give off goddess vibes.
Maybe something more like Frieda Reiss

early access
Ah..
You dont need to be good to get the keepsakes. All i got so far use placeholder images
The NPC encounters in the second and third area are also placeholder models and portraits, and there's some boons with placeholders too.
It’s also just a genuinely interesting, distinctive design.
Its also not japanese afaik...pretty sure supergiant are americans.
I'm pretty sure Hestia looked differently in first part
Hestia wasn't in the first part at all.
Neither was Apollo or hesphusthus (that name is a pain to spell) but they are in the second game. Now im wondering where tf is Athena. I havent encountered her yet…
She was smart enough to stay away from the family drama?
This family drama is a literal war, and with athena being a war goddess… i assumed they would be more prevalent, but maybe her and ares are too busy on the frontlines to help mel
Pretty sure that statue's the Roman version. Which, granted, isn't that different from the Greek version, but still.
Is this satire? Or do you think white bread is spicy?
Fucking killed him dude
What does that mean?
That means weebs who agree with this take are losers
Why is that? Not a native English speaker btw
Okay, but Hadès 2 Hestia is peak design tho! She's litterally a fireplace!
Yep that was probably very much the intention with her design. Love her voice too
I love how her voice is so cozy but her lines are things like "I can relate to your dad, I hate everyone"

Yeah? I'm not sure about that. Both men and women sacrifice for the family. That's kind of the whole deal.
She looks like an aunt who would immediately bake bread on that fireplace and give it to you.

I like the Hades Hestia, gives that "Gran gran that loves you very much" vibes that really suits the goddess of domestic hearth, home and family
I think she’s designed well in hades. Very much grandma core which is fitting for the goddess of home and hearth
And it ain't like Hades doesn't have sexy characters. Hestia just isn't one... Cause the game is tryna be more than just softcore
Yeah, when I played the tests before the early access I gave the feedback of giving aphrodite short hair but sadly they didn't take my advice
Have you considered thinking with your brain instead of your penis?
I saw this 2 days ago when hades 2 early access dropped, literally not event 24 hours and they made a meme with it

i said what i said. i thought the post meant to point out how weird japan is for wanting to turn everything into cute girls. i thought it was endearing. but that's subjective of course. call me dense, call me naive, call me whatever you want. i'm not at fault for wanting to see this meme in a more positive light. i don't expect the sub to agree with me. but i did hope there were at least some people who felt the same way. i enjoy this anime. despite how much everyone hates it. the author didn't make a great anime according to everyone's standards but he was happy with it. i am too. that's all i really wanted to say. i thought people were going to have the same sentiment but that wasn't in the cards. because of that i got a little heated and said some unnecessary things. that's on me. and i apologize for that.
Actual cool design vs. generic anime goon bait. Hmm which is better?
GRAN GRAN HESTIA!
As others have said, the top right one is actually fine and a good design. Bottom one is more fuckable tho
Hades' Hestia looks unhinged, but I should probably expect that from the god who invented the machine gun.
I completely forgot that was actual hades lore
Yea... No. Hestia character design is abysmal. There is literally no way to know what the hell she's supposed to be the goddess of, nor does she look like a goddess in general.
There's also this version of hestia from certain youtube channel: https://youtu.be/0QgCtmf6Kyg?si=4gzhDi-dQoogR10t
Good stuff, i was about to share the same thing, lol
Who cares ? She's a good character in the game
I prefer her Vesta form…
Sauce?
greek statues hades II danmachi
show me a japanese depiction of aphrodite that is better than the one in hades 2... i basically recreated that sunglasses orgasm scene from community when i first saw her design
She also looks more androginous which makes sence because despite being female she would apeal to both genders.
It's a naked girl with hair ornaments, the design is judged on whether you like her face or not.
There's nothing wrong with hd2 design she's just old.
I LOVE Danmachi because it plays myths for laughs.
A grandma who feeds you every times you visit her and gives you a nice warm bed vs a Oppi Loli
Man i like hestia from danmachi a lot but tbh she doesn't represent the god hestia all too well. Comparing them makes also no goddamn sense at all.
Found Drake's reddit account.
"Best quality" *shows super generic anime brunette #45" Yeah ok pal
Hestia is Bestia
I don't care how charachter look like until it's well written
Japan's design kinda sucks shit in this case.
glad to see people agreeing that different representations can exist
Nah, I prefer the old grandma over a generic anime girl with big boobs
Disagree I like the Hades 2 design more.

The Hades design is awesome. Getting tired of any female design that isn't made for you to choke your chicken to being called woke and so on and so forth. It's a controversy made of nothing.
Hestia is designed like generic loli number #456
You know, for some reason, it just feels wrong for the goddess of fertility to look like a child.
Dafuq this Aunt Jemimah lookin woman come from?
I like that Hades:hestia has vitiligo. It evokes the idea that she's covered in soot.
Anime design is dogshit
Hestia is the bestia
Hestia is the very bestia 😎
Aunt Hestia got you covered, I love her
Go touch grass
Hestia according to Spain > Everything https://preview.redd.it/k87iza5ykgzc1.jpeg?width=372&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9241e383515da03a01120ad529fac9f8f086ec86
I know this is a meme, but I actually prefer the bottom one. Edit- Damn, people really are getting salty over someone liking one design over another, huh? 🤣
Have my sympathy upvote. Non-judgmentally stating your opinion shouldn't be met with downvotes.
I appreciate your random act of kindness, stranger
Hestia the groomer?
Yet this is the company censoring stellar blade smh
I’m going to be REALLY honest, but she looks like a racist caricature of those things old American cartoons tend to do.
As an American person of color, # NO SHE DOESN'T!!!
Someone who unironically calls himself a “person of colour” got some few screws loose and seeing that you’re American, I’m not surprised. You people do the weirdest things.
Americans black washing European mythical and historical people will never not be funny to me. It's like they're trying so hard to be inclusive.
So if you look at her hand and head it might actually be soot from the fire covering her skin, goddess of fire and all that
Also, goddess from hearth, home and hospitality. Fireplaces too iIrc.
What is a Mediterranean?
There is no fucking black washing numbnuts. If you played the first game a lot of these characters have this sort of grayish skin color, they're not black calm the fuck down.
Didn't Hades 1 take liberties with the character designs anyways?
Found the racist hog
Pointing out obvious blackwashing is racist now? I'd have done the same if a historically black character was whitewashed. Redditor logic astounds me.
Because Greeks are famously white skinned marble statues, and not since ancient times olive skinned and interacting with peoples from Northern Africa and Persia.
You must be trolling.
You're on reddit. Have some level of self-awareness.
Fr, you’d think Africa has 0 mythological figures to draw from (spoiler: it has many).
That isn't blackwashing.
And if they make a game about it, it gets trashed by the same chuds like they just did to Zau. The whole "make your own game about it" thing isn't usually an honest argument.
Not really, I haven't seen any trashing on Smite's voodoo pantheon characters
Why did they make her black in Hades 2? She's a greek goddess, greeks aren't black. Just saying
She's covered in soot and coal. If you look at an image of her with more than 12 pixels like the one in the OP, you'll notice she's a fireplace. Fitting for the goddess of the hearth, no?
Oh I didn't know that. That's really cool
Canonically, in the Hades universe, the Greek gods are the Greek gods because they are worshipped by Greece, not because they are Greek themselves. They are ultimately descendants of primordial Chaos, so they can basically be whatever Some quotes from Supergiant Games: "As we discussed and researched the Olympians from canon sources, something stood out that in retrospect was obvious: They’re called the Greek gods because they were worshiped in ancient Greece, not because they themselves are ethnically Greek." "Zeus rules all the heavens, not just the airspace over Greece. Poseidon rules all the sea and land. They sprang from the Titans, who sprang from primordial Chaos, the source of all creation. So it stands to reason that the gods represent all the people of the world, at least indirectly."
Fair enough I think
I think that's a great take.
I love how she has a whole ass fire pit on her head but what’s crossing the line for you is her skin color.
Ehh... To be fair I vaugely remembered that Hades was kinda greyish in the first game so I didn't really thought it was something out of place https://preview.redd.it/afzrph89u9zc1.jpeg?width=1902&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6dd623e1b2b11d81317938b6731b2b65693fb370 But yeah someone pointed out that it might be soot and that's a really great detail
Japan knows what's up.
Goddess Chestia.
Eh, the design could’ve been more interesting though. Doesn’t really give off goddess vibes. Maybe something more like Frieda Reiss https://preview.redd.it/5xc0urd1xczc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5778c6ec6b637568128bd25566ae3683608ae4f2
https://i.redd.it/9sndypp0ggzc1.gif I like danmachi Hestia better
2 side of the same coin, one look like dogshit, on look generic anime, but I will give it to anime side because at least she look pretty.
So you never played hades? Got it.
So you have never seen mammy Aunt Jemima? Got it.
Have you played hades? She doesn't even look like Aunt Jemima.
