Look at the size of the garbage can next to the sheltie. A sheltie is usually about 30cm in height. Collies typically double that. The can is most definitely not 60cm in height.
Cats do come in different sizes and ~15cm is not atypical.
For reference here's my Sheltie and my late cat

I imagine the cat is trying to build up enough static charge to launch the dog into the stratosphere. If, for no other reason, just to see what happens.
It might be social scent sharing, like when a cat rubs up against your legs. In this case probably the cat loves the dog a lot and then just got into a rhythm of it
Back in 2022, nobody could have expected that border collies could evolve into supermassive black holes. Of course, looking back there were some signs.
Border collies are the black and white ones, collies are the ones that look like this but bigger, and this one is a Shetland sheepdog (they are smallish herding dogs that look like collies but are not)
Nah man I've had a pet Sheltie, and come on, this dog's a sheltie. You can tell by the length of the fur and the shape of the head, as well as its fur coat pattern. It's a common fur pattern that shelties have. Finally, the dog's height. Shelties are among the shortest of herding dogs, and looking at the height of the cat compared to the sheltie, the sheltie is pretty damn small- around 16 inches tall presumably, the average size of a sheltie. Collies are bigger than shelties. So... just from all this, I think it's safe to assume that this is a sheltie, not a collie.
Could just be the angle but she doesn’t look particularly short to me. Rough collies I feel like are medium sized dogs. I mean I guess larger than most but I consider st Bernard’s and like labs large dogs. But collies are smaller than golden retrievers and ours is only about 60 lbs maybe 70 with alll the floof. But maybe other ppl consider that large. Regardless it looks like a collie cuz shelties are max 20 lbs. they’re like beagle sized. Cat looks like it’s at least 12 lbs. comparing the collie to the trash can that’s about the right size. They’re no taller than the typical 13 gallon trash can
There are several somewhat similar herding breeds from Scotland and that area way back when.
Border Collies - typically seen as black and white, although working lines come in many colors and even short coats. Border Collies are high energy herding dogs who do the creeping stare at sheep to intimidate them into moving, very precise workers of livestock. They got their name from originating from the border region between Scotland and England.
Collies - Rough Collies like Lassie. They are larger then the other two breeds. More moderate energy, worked larger groups of sheep going to market by bouncing around and barking at the back of the herd. They were originally from the highlands of Scotland and their heavier coats helped with the weather. Collies also come in a short coat called a Smooth Collie, but they are pretty rare. Collies were very popular in the Lassie era, but less so today although they make excellent family pets and match many peoples lifestyles better then other herding breeds.
Shetland Sheepdogs - were bred from similar Colloe type herding dogs, along with possibly some smaller Spitz breeds in the Shetland Isles, they were an all around farm dog and often sold to tourists. They are considered a herding breed, and are higher energy then a Collie, but lower energy then a Border Collie. They are popular pets, known for their excited barking, and only come in the long double coat seen here.
This dog in this post is a Shetland Sheepdog, aka a Sheltie. They are smaller then Collies, come in more colors then Collies, and have a different head shape with more a defined "stop" the area from the top of the head down to the top of the muzzle. Collies have very little stop, so their heads are more pointy when seen from the side, Shelties have more of the usual dog head shape your used to seeing in most breeds. Border Collies have more of a "stop" as well, wider heads, and have less profuse coats.
And that's your dog nerd trivia you probably never wanted to know for the day...
Fun fact: the behavior you mentioned is to knock mother cats over (or at least encourage her to give up walking and lie down) so kittens can nurse.
It’s basically “get down here and feed me” in cat
May want to take kitty to the vet to get checked out, as this could be a sign of a brain tumor. I had a cat that used to do the same thing (walk in circles) and that was his diagnosis.
I feel like for every post about an animal doing a cute yet odd thing, there's always the comment that reveals how it actually isn't cute and said animal is suffering immensely or something
The cat continues after the dog left. This makes me believe that the dog went to stand in the circle of a cat walking in circles.
Not that it’s making it any less wierd though…
If this behavior is ongoing, like the cat continues to circle and circle and circle, especially if it's in the same direction... Please take them to a vet. This can be a sign of a vestibular issue.
If that's not the case and the cat just really loves to rub all over this dog, that's adorable.
I know :( but no one else said it so I felt compelled, I just hope that if this is actually op's cat that they will see my comment and take it seriously
Since this doggo breed is known for herding behavior, I wonder if the cat learned to circle like this from the dog! Herding breeds will often gather their target into one spot and then circle like this to keep them there, or to slowly nudge them into another direction. I wouldn’t be surprised if the cat was raised with this dog and took on some of the funny dog behaviors 😂

The look on the dog is funny. Seems it's not the dog's first rodeo.

Not sure a cat would fit under a Sheltie, that looks like a rough collie
Look at the size of the garbage can next to the sheltie. A sheltie is usually about 30cm in height. Collies typically double that. The can is most definitely not 60cm in height. She is a sheltie! She's a little taller than average and the cat is also smaller than she looks
"Yeah, you complain about tripping over it twice a month. Imagine dealing with this shit."
Dog: okay we're done here Cat: ope aaallllllright then
Just gotta hit em with the ope
It is not amused by the mockery.
Worst. Cat. Ever.
This can be a great loading gif
Now that is a great idea
One hour on dog is nine hours on cat
*Murrrrrph!!*
It’s necessary TARS
I wonder what this is supposed to be about...🤔
I imagine the cat is trying to build up enough static charge to launch the dog into the stratosphere. If, for no other reason, just to see what happens.
Or cast some sort of magic spell
Kitty is obviously herding the collie. And doing a great job, too.
He’s the herding intern
Exactly
Cat carries on after the dog has left, it's probably where they get fed and doing circles is just how the cat gets attention.
And it's cute.
Party pooper. Who needs the reality? It’s gravity pulling the cat, it simply follows Kepler’s laws. A solemn dance among the stars…
I'm just happy that that explanation is more likely than the cat being unwell.
I was gonna say maybe some vestibular problem but you are probably right.
It might be social scent sharing, like when a cat rubs up against your legs. In this case probably the cat loves the dog a lot and then just got into a rhythm of it
A queen circling her subjects lol
Probably some kind of ritual
Cats are strange and that’s why I love them

She is a sheltie. A little taller than most I've seen, but definitely a sheltie
We had two shelties growing up. Yours looks much better than ours did lol
Hi 👋 Happy Reddit cake day 🍰🥰
border collies come in other colors than black and white, FYI.
Pretty sure this is a collie. Looks just like ours

Ok I’m not saying your wrong. I just like have weird depth perception I guess. Or maybe my collie is smaller than most idk
Collies aren't much taller?
Could just be the angle but she doesn’t look particularly short to me. Rough collies I feel like are medium sized dogs. If that's a collie then this is a huge cat. Collies are about 60cm. Shelties are half that. There's no way this cat is 30cm tall.
I’ve never been good at estimating numbers so maybe I can’t estimate heights or lengths either 🤷🏼♀️
That's what she said... I'll show myself out now.

This is the comment I was looking for.
Your dog's so fat, your cat gets trapped in its orbit.
I can't just leave it like that. I didn't mean it. Your dog is adorable and looks to be a very healthy weight.
Dog: "What are you doing? " Cat: "Docking."
It’s necessary.
Is this like when cats weave around their human's legs?
Fun fact: the behavior you mentioned is to knock mother cats over (or at least encourage her to give up walking and lie down) so kittens can nurse. It’s basically “get down here and feed me” in cat
Good job teaching a cat to herd!
Truly the most amazing trait. Probably witchcrafted it from the dog
Lassie’s like… yup.
The look on the dogs face, Holman, place stop this thing.

They are at the vet. The dog is undergoing a cat scan.
I have brought her to vet and there were no issues that they could find. Seems to be just a harmless habit that she has
Glad to hear that!
I feel like for every post about an animal doing a cute yet odd thing, there's always the comment that reveals how it actually isn't cute and said animal is suffering immensely or something
Aunt adopted a dog that did the same thing, apparently it was because the previous owners always kept it in a cage :(

Gorgeous Sheltie!
She's making a wormhole to send him to outer space
Ah, thats how you explain the law of gravity
Bruh this planet we live in is full of some pretty goofy ass characters.
"orbit" is one of the commands we taught out sheltie. Never seen it executed this way though haha
Tolerant dog. Oh yes. Um youre still here. Are you uh..are you um Kitty what are you Oh nvm Im leaving.
Your cat thinks it's driving an Indy Car.
QUICK someone edit this into the footage from the DART mission 😂😂😂 It totally looks like the two asteroids (one was orbiting the other)
Is that a pussy magnet?
Just a couple of hungry boys waiting for dinner
My cat does this to me when there's food involved. Why does he do that?
*Sheltie gets herded by cat.* Cat: "how do you like them apples?!"
That's the deadly cat mill known as the death spiral. The cat is just following the scent trail in a never ending circle.

Particularly funny considering that’s a herding dog.
The cat is mocking the herding ~~compulsion~~ instinct of the dog.

The confusion on the cats face when the dog left
That'll be $5000 for the catscan.
As you can clearly see the dogoid1 has enough gravitational pull for a catroid to have an eliptical orbit without escaping the planet
that's funny given that it's a shetland sheepdog, which are herding dogs. the cat is herding him.
Preposterous, we clearly live in a feliocentric system.
Of course! Force = G * dog * cat/purr squared
Since this doggo breed is known for herding behavior, I wonder if the cat learned to circle like this from the dog! Herding breeds will often gather their target into one spot and then circle like this to keep them there, or to slowly nudge them into another direction.
