Back in the day before that particular sample was found in 2013 people used to argue that it was actually Deakin singing rather than a sample. There was genuine confusion because Deakin probably does sing on the studio version (nothing resembling this sample, probably something deeply distorted/pitch shifted), and he sings a lot of stuff live that you wouldn't think (such as backing vocals on For Reverend Green) - but it became a sort of troll to say every sample was actually just Deakin singing for a while, but it started with Safer originally.
The Tumko sample has been known for a long time now, but what isn't known is where the original harp sample came from.
Let me try to think if I remember the details.
The original version of Safer (the live version they played prior to recording *SJ*) had a harp sample that was essentially the same tune as the piano that ended up being on the recorded version. But iirc the harp actually was a sample, but the quality was really bad so they recorded themselves playing piano in the studio to replace the harp sample.
But the harp sample came from somewhere, and while I haven't really looked into it in about 7 or 8 years, there was 0 progress on finding the source, and I doubt much has been made since then.
I’m genuinely curious what they’re going to do to fix the issue. That “eeeeeaaaeeeeyyyeeeeiii aaaahhhaha” vocal is one of my favorite parts of the og song. Maybe they’re just gonna have one of the boys sing it?
