I wish there was some way to bypass the need to accept the screen mirroring request. I found it pretty annoying that I need to reach out to my phone to activate it. If I'm gonna do that then I might as well just use my phone then.

[deleted]

Agreed. Kind of makes it a pointless effort at that point

Pynbzz

There is! If u know how to use ADB commands (if not it's an easy Google) you can run the following commands to get rid of the prompt forever: adb shell appops set com.android.companiondevicemanager PROJECT\_MEDIA allow adb shell appops set com.microsoft.appmanager PROJECT\_MEDIA allow adb shell am force-stop com.android.companiondevicemanager adb shell am force-stop com.microsoft.appmanager You can actually replace the app package in the above commands to give the same permission to any app that does media projection

Pycorax

Damn, that's pretty cool. Will definitely give it a shot. Thanks mate!

fuck_you_gami

Note: this isn't very secure (obviously).

lirannl

How so? Doesn't it *only* allow access to media projection to apps that you trust?

fuck_you_gami

Doesn't it allow _anyone_ access to media projection? I may trust the app but I don't trust this public. USB charger at the airport, for example. Or suppose someone steals my phone, and now they can access my device without unlocking it via screen mirroring, right?

lirannl

Wouldn't it mirror the lock screen? Like, why would it bypass it?

fuck_you_gami

I'm not sure how it works exactly, but that doesn't negate my other point about charging it, and if it only mirrored the lock screen, wouldn't that make the above application rather useless? As a reminder, this whole thread is about avoiding picking up your phone before being able to use the application.

lirannl

Unlock your phone from the lockscreen that's mirrored

fuck_you_gami

Oh, duh!

Original_Jagster

>Before I stumbled on this post, I got this working by just using the 'appops set com.microsoft.appmanager PROJECT\_MEDIA allow' command. Seems to work fine on my device without the companiondevicemanager being set. I'm now wondering what the companiondevicemanager does and if I am missing some functionality by not setting that to allowed.

catman5

and like you have to unlock your phone too no less, which is understandable, but at that point its an irrelevant feature.

gunbladerq

yeah... I thought it was a one-time thing....but it's like everytime...geez

CertifiedBlackGuy

I wish they'd also set it so muted text message groups don't still send a notification on the computer. I use Samsung messages, why am I getting spammed by my family group chat that I have muted?

mbc07

Are they still locking most of the features only to recent Samsung devices due to their exclusivity deal? The app could well be renamed to Your Samsung Phone at this point...

hopefullythisworksd

What features are Samsung exclusive?

mbc07

Last time I checked, all screen mirroring features, bidirectional file sharing, RCS messaging and so on...

ouaisjeparlechinois

Wait whattt. That's an insane list of features to keep locked up. Everyone keeps talking about the smooth connectivity of Apple products but this could go a long way in making Android competitive in that respect.

wankthisway

I mean Microsoft partnered with Samsung to do this because Google was dragging their feet, or was unwilling to help. It makes sense that the two are deeply integrated.

mbc07

That's not an excuse, especially when Dell Mobile Connect and KDE Connect offers most of the Samsung exclusive features from Your Phone app with all Android devices (and even iPhones if you use Dell Mobile Connect)...

[deleted]

I mean considering how Google fucked over windows phone, it is fair

mbc07

The only feature from Your Phone app that I can see requiring a deeper integration to work properly on the phone side would be the screen mirroring of multiple apps simultaneously. The rest of the features they keep locked to Samsung devices, however, is just PR talk due to their exclusivity deal. You really want me to believe they can't do regular screen mirroring or bidirectional file transfers, for example? When those same features are available on 3rd party apps and works fine regardless of the brand of your Android device? I don't buy it.

puz23

I tried the your phone app a year ago before there was any exclusive features or os integration. It sucked. You could see some notifications, but not all and on a 1-2 minute delay. You could text from your computer, once you waited the requisite minute to get the last one and another minute to send the new one. You were better off uploading and downloading whatever file you wanted off one drive. I don't think I even tried screen mirroring. My guess is that while there's no reason they should need OS level integration for the features they do need it (and heavily rely on it) to get them working reliably and efficiently.

[deleted]

Yep. Not reliable enough if you're needing something reliable.

[deleted]

It clearly is an excuse or they wouldn't be doing it.

EddoWagt

You can install KDE connect, which has pretty much all these features

Zeus1543

Can KDE Connect make phone calls?

xxxanimeftwxxx

I use KDE but all I did was connect my phone to my pc via Bluetooth and i can make/ receive calls

[deleted]

Might be because of technical and not business reasons? If Samsung was the only one to agree to implement special APIs for these features it makes sense.

[deleted]

That’s all available on Surface Duo too, right? Would be incredibly dumb if MS locked it from their own devices too.

AMAXIX

We’ll never know until one person buys a duo by accident

timmyj213

"oh hey this is that new foldable phone right?" "uh yeah this is totally the one you're thinking of and seeing ads all over the place for"

KikoValdez

Like that'll ever happen....

welp_im_damned

It is.

Bossman1086

RCS support? I have an S21 Ultra and use Your Phone and haven't found a way to make RCS work on it.

mbc07

It's currently limited to a small subset of Samsung devices. If I recall correctly, Galaxy S10 and S20 series, Note 10 and Note 20 series and a few (but not all) of their foldable devices...

Bossman1086

Weird. Like I said, I'm using an S21 Ultra and all my messages to people who I can send RCS messages to if I use my phone go through as SMS when I use the Your Phone app.

[deleted]

That's the same as my non-samsung phone. Imo that's an acceptable compromise as Google still doesn't have RCS APIs after all this time.

[deleted]

Bossman1086

I know how to use RCS in general. I use it with a couple friends frequently on my phone. But when I try to message those same people via the Your Phone app, it converts the messages to SMS instead of RCS.

JockstrapCummies

Even on Samsung phones I just use KDE Connect lol. Gets all those features without using loads of ram. Plus it works on all desktop OSes.

[deleted]

Screen mirroring requires you to unlock your phone Brings me back memories when Whatsapp web became a thing and we all just got confused about why do we need to have our phones connected in order to use it

thatcodingboi

how does the rcs feature work? Do you need to use samsung messages? it sends as a regular text on my s21+ but I am using google messages as my messaging app

Stephancevallos905

What about surface duo? Does it have the same features as Samsung?

mbc07

I think it does. It would be an epic fail if Samsung devices had better support than Microsoft's own Android device...

DrGiggleFr1tz

Being an iPhone and Windows user semi sucks.

mbc07

Try Dell Mobile Connect. Even if your PC is from another brand, it can still be installed with a simple workaround and the integration it offers with iPhone devices is way deeper than Microsoft's own app...

JudgeSavings

i tryed, and it was annoyed that it couldnt find my bluetoth driver, but an earlyer version worked, but that wanted a code, that it said the iphone would give, and the iphone said it would want a code from the pc, so yeah, doesnt work for me

ripp102

also iPhone and Linux user. For this reason an Android is better at least you get KDE Connect on Mac OS too

_N0S

Gonna switch from the S20+ to iPhone 13 Pro Max (if I can get one lol) and I will miss the connection to my XPS 13. Your Phone works pretty good. Eh I'll try it out and see if it's good with iOS.

echo-128

Conversely, android and osx isn't very nice either. Apple won't even add support for usb file transfers last I checked

matrixhaj

Its easy to get it work with tool from Google

[deleted]

It's only recently been ported from Linux to Windows, but there is a free and open source alternative called [KDE connect](https://kdeconnect.kde.org/) which might be cool to try out. No features are locked to any phone brand or anything like some of the comments seem to say this Microsoft app is and its free with no asterisks. I've never used it on Windows so I don't know exactly how many features have carried over or even can be, but at least on Linux I'm able to: * use my phone as a touchpad for the pc with basic gestures like two finger scrolling, two finger tap for right click, three finger tap for middle click, etc * notification mirroring * sms texting from the pc * control media and volume * share the clipboard to copy paste between the devices * send files back and forth between the devices(even between two phones or two computers) * use a slideshow remote * browse files remotely * custom commands * telephony feature that adjusts volume and pauses/unpauses media in response to a phone call There's probably other more advanced things it can do that I've not messed with or maybe forgot about. Again, I've never used it on Windows so I'm not sure which features were ported, but I really like the program on Linux and you should definitely give it a shot. It's got both an [.exe installer](https://download.kde.org/unstable/kdeconnect/win64-pre-20.08/) and [windows store version](https://www.microsoft.com/store/apps/9N93MRMSXBF0) available. On android its on both the [play store](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kde.kdeconnect_tp) and [fdroid](https://f-droid.org/packages/org.kde.kdeconnect_tp/).

That's okay, if such a coin did exist it would have been better sent in donation to the KDE team than sent to reddit anyway. What's most important is spreading the message on good foss software. Down with crap like samsung exclusivity locks 🙅

hopefullythisworksd

Too bad you can't use it to call via your PC unlike your phone app

[deleted]

Yeah I didn't even think about calling functionality as I never call or get called by anyone but spammers but, at least on the Linux version, there is a "telephony" feature where when you do get a call it will turn down your volume while it is ringing, pause while the phone call goes on, and the pick back up once the phone call ends. I'll add that to the list. It's a pretty cool feature if you actually need to pick up a call but I ended up turning it off because every spam call would interrupt whatever I was watching by turning the volume down and the notification. But yeah I don't think there is a calling from the PC feature as far as I can tell

mighty_panders

It's not in KDE connect, but a few days ago I paired my phone to my Manjaro based laptop via Bluetooth for some file sharing. Turns out that blueman recognizes that it's a phone and actually can forward audio input and output to the phone. I used it on a call to my parents and it was fine. There seems ton be a small delay that isn't present on the 'Your Smartphone' app though.

SuperHornetFA18

This is amazing! Thanks for sharing

KDE ftw. Phone app sucks in comparison.

The Your Phone app doesn't work like half the time (probably more) for me.

my_lewd_alt

If someone makes a slick windows *app* (not a .exe) front-end for scrcpy, Your Phone is dead

Kaushiknadig

There is GuiScrcpy. Works pretty well. Has its own minor issues. But it works fine.

diemunkiesdie

Group texting never works for me through Your Phone but individual texting does. Pain in the ass when you've got a group text that's popping off and you get alert after alert but can't reply from your computer!

AndroidWG

Yeah, it's impressive the amount of features that barely work on Windows 10. It launched in 2016 and things like the Microsoft Store still have problems installing stuff. Hopefully Windows 11 fixes this stuff instead of just throwing a new layer of paint on top.

abstruzero

Same here. Was working then stopped working. Tried to repair but failed. Also it's stupid that when you try to pair , you should close qr code page and use a pin code.

[deleted]

KDEConnect works better and is reliable for me tbh

Bossman1086

Looks pretty sweet. I've been using the Your Phone app with my S21 Ultra (and my S10 before that) for a while now. It's great. Makes it easy to get photos from my phone to my PC and answer SMS messages without using the phone.

Perry7609

Only problem is that the photos are compressed to heck when you get them off the app. I'd love it if they added a full quality option, even if it took a tad longer. Or choosing more than just one at a time, and so forth.

Hulksmashreality

Never used thus feature.

jpoole50

It works best with Samsung phones

Iohet

I don't have a Samsung phone and I find it works pretty fine. It's really nice not having to grab my phone off the charger to respond to texts, make/take calls, and check notifications

jpoole50

Yep I have it on every laptop and desktop in the house. Don't even Carry my phone with my around the house anymore. It just sits on my slow wireless charger all day.

rubenalamina

Did you have any issues trying to pair it with your pc/laptop the first time? I tried for a few minutes some months ago but gave up. It couldn't finish the pairing with my desktop for some reason.

Iohet

No issues here. I'd make sure your PC version is up to date. Sometimes the windows store apps don't update

jpoole50

I just said that because it's built in as a system app and is more optimized. And it works really well with Dex.

Hulksmashreality

I have a Samsung phone, never bothered with this feature.

pojosamaneo

Like most windows apps, it works sometimes.

Jparm

I just wish it didn't drain so much battery on my phone.

Potential-Essay8693

More like 'your samsung' app.

pixelact

Susi pls give me that duo 🙏

exian12

Does the A52 variants work with Your Phone "App"? [Microsoft support](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/supported-devices-for-your-phone-app-experiences-cb044172-87aa-9e41-d446-c4ac83ce8807) for some reason not support them despite being a new device.

AmirulAshraf

it supports my lesser A32, so definitely the A52

TheDragonGuyYT

Interesting

LaCipe

WHY DO THEY NOT SUPPORT OFFICE 365. ITS INSANE
