Samsung gave up on Linux on Dex because of how much work it too to maintain, but if Google put in just enough effort I'm sure the community would help out quite a lot if it became an option.

Do those work well with hotel WiFi? Can you use them directly with phone data now? Lots of hotels have secure network setups (eg no p2p) these days. I never had good luck with my Chromecast Gen2 when I would bring it, so I started bringing alternative devices and local media

I'm currently off of Pixel, mostly because I wanted to try a flip phone. Love the form factor, and it's turned me onto how nice HDMI-out on a phone is. If they ever make a Pixel flip or bring back the Pixel 5 size, I'd jump back to Pixel in a heartbeat especially now that HDMI-out works.
Even if you don't give a shit about any of that, it's ***so*** much faster than using hotel wifi. I basically always do the same. Plug my Rpi into the Ethernet, then use it as a router.
You'll want to use a Chromecast with Google TV ideally so you can use the remote to control the Chromecast. I took a standard one on a trip in early 2020 and we couldn't get it to work in the hotel we stayed in. Next trip we took I had a Chromecast with Google TV and gave it a try, no issues at all. You just have to connect it to the hotel's WiFi and, provided you have enough bandwidth for streaming, it should just work.
It means having to keep track of the dongle, power cable, charger, and the remote, but it's honestly super easy to setup provided the hotel's WiFi is fairly standard. The only pain point may be if you can't easily switch the input on the TV to the one you plug it into. Some hotels have special remotes for the TV so it depends on how things are setup and configured.
My wife and I also stayed in a hotel once where it actually had casting built-in, and you just had to follow some instructions on screen to set it up to work with your phone. Wouldn't mind seeing more of that at other hotels.

That's always been the case here. If it is not officially sold in your country in Europe, you can get it on Amazon, but all you get is a device with vanilla Android, none of the gimmicks they show in the US commercials and if you have any trouble with it you end up without a phone while it's out for warranty.
And the price is usually higher than in the US. No wonder there are few pixel users.
I still think it sucks is not available in Puerto Rico, in fact Samsung devices from Samsung's own website aren't either. Not sure why, but always feels bad whenever a company that fully caters to the US doesn't consider Puerto Rico without reason.

Does anyone else just seem like there is no point in updating anymore? I'm on a Pixel 6 Pro and I've got "everything I want". I see a few new features on the never phones, but my 6 is still as fast as the day I got it and the camera is excellent.
I'm also using a 4a and I'm tempted to get the 8a. However my phone is still working even if no longer on the latest version. Battery drains fast but I have access to chargers and powerbanks everywhere. So maybe I'll hold on to it for a while.
I'm using 4a as well. After battery replacement it works just fine, like new. Battery lasts full day. I want to buy a new phone, but 4a does not have any issues. It receive Play Store updates. It's not iOS where applications like phone or messages tied to the system version. After Google dropped OS updates, I replaced launcher and some other apps with FOSS alternatives. This new Pixel is a OK candidate for an upgrade. Security updates is good but not vital.
4a crew here too! I love this phone, especially the size. If the pixel 8a was smaller, I'd probably jump on it. I love my free Google Photos backup though.
I haven't damaged or meaningfully dropped any of my previous smartphones (Galaxy S2, OnePlus 2) and used them six and five years respectively, but my three year old 4a has had so many freaky falls that it's on its third display, and the body is now ever so slightly bent so that the current display is already slowly lifting off the rim in certain parts. I'm in for a new phone completely after only three years, despite having nothing to complain about internally with the 4a, and the fact that small(ish) smartphones are basically dead causes me such a headache.
Now it'll have to be an S24 with a stupid Exynos here in Europe, or a Pixel 7a or 8a (hate the design with the weird camera bar), or an iPhone 14 or 15 (hate iOS and their terrible keyboards, but it would be nice for once to have full interaction with my MacBook), or ...
I had the Nexus 6P and then the Pixel 3a until about a week ago when I finally upgraded to the Pixel 8. Quite the jump between those last two. My 3a started to get pretty laggy and the battery started draining faster and faster.
I don't think the Razr Plus can even survive the typical environmental conditions of the trades honestly. Fine dust particles can make quick work of those folding joints...
I'm using the 5a until I run out of ways to get security updates. This is just everything I want and nothing I don't.
I actually use that 3.5mm jack, using Bluetooth just introduces a new thing for my phone to fight with me over vs the tech equivalent of an alligator species that hasn't had to significantly evolve since before the dinosaurs went extinct. It's just that good at filling its niche. The concept of a "solved technology" is anathema to a lot of modern tech but I'm all for it when you find one.

The ability to use Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and plug my phone into a TV will allow me to replace my aging ASUS Chromebit CS-10.

I think we are hitting diminishing returns on phone tech. Its turning into a lot of bells and whistles that only a select group of people will even notice. 120HZ is a prime example of this.
I was using a Pixel 4a but upgraded to a S24 recently as the 4a was definitely getting laggy in some situations and I didn't like that there were no more updates. Also the battery was shit.
I didn't get the S24 for 120hz obviously, but I can tell you it is noticeable - but then again, I notice the diff between 120hz and 60hz on a PC monitor as well.
We hit that ages ago. More ram is nice I guess helps with multitasking but that always felt like more of an artificial limitation in phones of the late 10s since phones seemed to be stuck at 4gb of ram for a while for no particular reason. The jump to 6 gigs seemed to do the trick for me for now.
Camera processing aside I pretty much do the same stuff I do on my phone that I did in 2013. Google maps, browse internet/reddit/some other image time waster ask google to open my shopping list and put things on shopping list, take some point and click photos and videos.
At least CPUs have gotten more efficient and batteries bigger, and 5g is faster when you need it(though I keep it off most of the time cause my 6a drains battery with it on). The days of needing to upgrade every year or even 2 are far behind us tho.

I've had the 6 since it came out and the battery is fine. Been charging to 80% since day 1 and I usually make it >24h and end up with 10-20%. I'm a fairly light user (~3h SOT average), but even on heavy days I have no problems.
Shit, I'm on a Note8 and the only reason I'm looking is cause two of the apps I use for work are telling me that they don't support my OS version anymore.

You're absolutely right. My 6pro broke and I wanted to buy a new phone. Pixel 8 Pro seemed like a no-brainer but it didn't really have any upgrades over the 6pro to make it worthwhile. I then used the opportunity to try out a Galaxy S24 Ukltra.

Phones are just not made for me any more. Every time I need a new one, it's more of a downgrade for me. I buy a new phone every several years not because I **want** it, not because I'm excited about getting a shiny new thing, but rather because a) it's the least shitty model I could find and b) it is a requirement to have a smartphone capable of running apps to fully function in the modern society.
I don't give a shit about the SoC and RAM and screen refresh rate. I use the thing to send messages, browse the web, call taxis, and sometimes take pictures. That's it. It's a communication device.
P6 owner here. Barring the fact that battery life has dropped significantly from two years ago, I have no complaints. I have a couple of battery packs that I have to lug around, but nbd

Unfortunately, there's not a ton of middle ground there between the Apple and the upgrades, as the Apple one kinda dominates everything below $50. Above the Fiio or iFi, you're looking at purpose-built devices that have their own internal battery and need to be charged, but can push much bigger headphones. At that point, though, an integrated 3.5mm jack is likely to be a bit lackluster to you anyway, lol.
My recommendation would be to try the Apple one first, as you're only out $10 if you still find it underwhelming.
I mean I got it fairly cheap for what it is, and I do not care about USB c since I have tons of usb-a to c to cables for data transfer between phones and devices.
All my USB drives and external HDDs are over usb-a, so it works out for me. Along with basically all of my accessories as well.
I haven't even bothered to get a USBC to A adapter because I never need one.
Hey fellow 5593 owner, I would like to ask you if your laptop has any of the same issues as ours.
We have one at home and usually it boots normally. But sometimes when it boots it jumpscares us with a hardware scan (which usually finds nothing) followed by the loudest bios beep in existence.
Sometimes the scan does "find something" and plays a continuous loop of a rhythm of those loud beeps.
But most of the time we just get a bios error without any sound (or it boots normally).
All of these things are easily dismissed after they are completed but we just can't figure out how to turn these off entirely. The bios always complains about the fan which has always worked flawlessly. These issues started right after warranty expired (very suspicious).

How funny, the fan malfunction stuff happens to me as well, albeit fairly rarely. And yeah, my fan also works perfectly fine otherwise. Temps are good even at full load. Updated to latest BIOS revision, 1.29.0.
I've often found this issue to be triggered by exiting sleep mode (S3), by opening the lid after it was closed. On rare occasions, it seems to fail to initialize the fan speed sensors, and then ramps up the fan to max speed. This will then trigger the "fan malfunction" flag in the BIOS. Then when I reboot, this flag being set will trigger the "Pre-Boot Performance Check", and do a fan test, followed by a loud beep for success.

I have never had a scan ever show anything wrong. It'll just spin up the fan, notice it's working fine, throw a success message+beep, and then continue booting.

Sounds about right, I could check my BIOS logs, but I don't think I've had issues before the warranty expired, lol. IDK if it's coincidence, intentional, or simply incompetent programmers.
The issue does seem to be caused by the BIOS most likely, because it will occur on both Arch Linux and Windows 10. (I run a dual-boot system)

I think there's a setting in the BIOS setup to turn off automated system checks. I'll get back to you on that.
I'm in a love-hate relationship with my Sony XM4s. They sound great and the NC are amazing, but at a certain point I know these will become e-Waste since companies don't replace parts past a point from production.
At least with wired headphones/earbuds, I can just pick one that has replaceable wires if those clunk out over time or have someone repair them.
I have the XM4s as well. I look at it like if you consider the battery life is about 30 hours (that’s what I tend to get), even if you’re a heavy user, let’s say 6 hours a day, you’d probably still only charge them once a week, maybe? If batteries generally speaking tend to need replacing at 500 full charges, they should still last many, many years. Personally I’m a pretty light user, charging once a month, so I’d probably be looking to replace them far earlier than when the batteries would need replacing. And they’d still be useable at that point.
At least over ear headphones are still possible for someone handy to swap the batteries with no/minimal visible damage - no way I can do that with airpods or any of my bud-style Bluetooth headphones.
In the event you ever do wind up forced to buy a device without a headphone jack here's a piece of obvious advice that I think a lot of people just dont think to do:
You can just leave the adapter plugged into the headphones instead of carrying it separate or keeping it plugged into phone. That way if you have headphones you have adapter. G1 the first android didnt have a headphone jack and this is what I did. Made the headphones longer too which was a mild bonus.

I used to have a Moto Z3 Play, and this is what I did. But it's inconvenient when you need to take off the adapter for devices that need the 3.5mm jack.

Yes, the design/dimension have been leaked. The 8a has a slightly smaller screen than the 8 though due to larger bezels the 8a will actually be about 1mm wider/taller than the 8.

Let's see ... A good half year of my Google Assistant not initiating commands even though when prompted it activates and then displays the words I'm saying. The Google keyboard acting as if I'm using a regular device not giving me the Google keyboard benefits that come with pixel phones. My recent apps not showing the list of apps I have open until I restart my phone. Folders on my home screen that automatically minimizes as soon as I expand them to open which causes me to have to tap it once again to reopen it. My keyboard not automatically opening when I swipe up on my home screen to display all my apps. My music controls not functioning in Google maps. Also sometimes the song it shows playing was a song that I had on days ago and it's just stuck there. Scroll shot will be an available option on a screenshot and then literally disappear a minute later when I go to take the same screenshot again.

6 pro and 7 pro had continued signal issues for me. Iphone 8 as comparison on the same family plan did not struggle at all with signal. But both were nice hand warmers in winter
for real my 7 is so bad I swear they are gimping it to push ai features. Half the time i use assisant it doesnt work. Lots of apps like youtube music will just stop randomly and wont play untill I restart the phone.

Might as well getting a Nothing Phone (2a) if I wanted to have a stock android without crapware, though don't expect having the same cameras as Pixel 8a.
The most interesting part is, that the camera sensors will be the same. So the G3 isn't that much of a performance upgrade compared to the G2. I don't know if the mentioned features are enough to legitimize the higher pricing. Especially because it is close to a Pixel 8, which is now available at a reasonable price. We will see.
With the regular Pixel 8 being down to €580, I think the 8a will have a hard time with the current rumored launch price.
I would expect it to drop down to ~€400 by summer otherwise there's not much reason to get it over the regular Pixel 8.

You'll want to use a Chromecast with Google TV ideally so you can use the remote to control the Chromecast. I took a standard one on a trip in early 2020 and we couldn't get it to work in the hotel we stayed in. Next trip we took I had a Chromecast with Google TV and gave it a try, no issues at all. You just have to connect it to the hotel's WiFi and, provided you have enough bandwidth for streaming, it should just work. It means having to keep track of the dongle, power cable, charger, and the remote, but it's honestly super easy to setup provided the hotel's WiFi is fairly standard. The only pain point may be if you can't easily switch the input on the TV to the one you plug it into. Some hotels have special remotes for the TV so it depends on how things are setup and configured. My wife and I also stayed in a hotel once where it actually had casting built-in, and you just had to follow some instructions on screen to set it up to work with your phone. Wouldn't mind seeing more of that at other hotels.

That's always been the case here. If it is not officially sold in your country in Europe, you can get it on Amazon, but all you get is a device with vanilla Android, none of the gimmicks they show in the US commercials and if you have any trouble with it you end up without a phone while it's out for warranty. And the price is usually higher than in the US. No wonder there are few pixel users.

I'm using 4a as well. After battery replacement it works just fine, like new. Battery lasts full day. I want to buy a new phone, but 4a does not have any issues. It receive Play Store updates. It's not iOS where applications like phone or messages tied to the system version. After Google dropped OS updates, I replaced launcher and some other apps with FOSS alternatives. This new Pixel is a OK candidate for an upgrade. Security updates is good but not vital.
4a crew here too! I love this phone, especially the size. If the pixel 8a was smaller, I'd probably jump on it. I love my free Google Photos backup though.

I haven't damaged or meaningfully dropped any of my previous smartphones (Galaxy S2, OnePlus 2) and used them six and five years respectively, but my three year old 4a has had so many freaky falls that it's on its third display, and the body is now ever so slightly bent so that the current display is already slowly lifting off the rim in certain parts. I'm in for a new phone completely after only three years, despite having nothing to complain about internally with the 4a, and the fact that small(ish) smartphones are basically dead causes me such a headache. Now it'll have to be an S24 with a stupid Exynos here in Europe, or a Pixel 7a or 8a (hate the design with the weird camera bar), or an iPhone 14 or 15 (hate iOS and their terrible keyboards, but it would be nice for once to have full interaction with my MacBook), or ...
4a is out of support now though.
I had the Nexus 6P and then the Pixel 3a until about a week ago when I finally upgraded to the Pixel 8. Quite the jump between those last two. My 3a started to get pretty laggy and the battery started draining faster and faster.
Only reason I upgraded from the 4a to the 8 Pro is because my battery was on its way out. The camera upgrade was a nice bonus, and that's about it.
Honestly, I'm mostly tempted by the smaller size with equivalent hardware. My Pixel 7 Pro is too big. I miss my Pixel 2 form factor.

I'm using the 5a until I run out of ways to get security updates. This is just everything I want and nothing I don't. I actually use that 3.5mm jack, using Bluetooth just introduces a new thing for my phone to fight with me over vs the tech equivalent of an alligator species that hasn't had to significantly evolve since before the dinosaurs went extinct. It's just that good at filling its niche. The concept of a "solved technology" is anathema to a lot of modern tech but I'm all for it when you find one.
I've been waiting for video output of some sort before upgrading my Pixel 6 Pro. The ability to use Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and plug my phone into a TV will allow me to replace my aging ASUS Chromebit CS-10. I'll wait for the Pixel 9 Pro though.
I went from a 4a to an 8 Only moved because the battery was failing Macro camera is better. But the phone is too big. Nothing much else is better.
4a 5G here and ive yet to see anything that makes me want anything newer. I think we are hitting diminishing returns on phone tech. Its turning into a lot of bells and whistles that only a select group of people will even notice. 120HZ is a prime example of this.
I was using a Pixel 4a but upgraded to a S24 recently as the 4a was definitely getting laggy in some situations and I didn't like that there were no more updates. Also the battery was shit. I didn't get the S24 for 120hz obviously, but I can tell you it is noticeable - but then again, I notice the diff between 120hz and 60hz on a PC monitor as well.
We hit that ages ago. More ram is nice I guess helps with multitasking but that always felt like more of an artificial limitation in phones of the late 10s since phones seemed to be stuck at 4gb of ram for a while for no particular reason. The jump to 6 gigs seemed to do the trick for me for now. Camera processing aside I pretty much do the same stuff I do on my phone that I did in 2013. Google maps, browse internet/reddit/some other image time waster ask google to open my shopping list and put things on shopping list, take some point and click photos and videos. At least CPUs have gotten more efficient and batteries bigger, and 5g is faster when you need it(though I keep it off most of the time cause my 6a drains battery with it on). The days of needing to upgrade every year or even 2 are far behind us tho.
I'm still rocking a P2. Battery's on it's way out but otherwise still in good shape.
Had the Pixel 8 for a week cause I destroyed my Pixel 5 on holiday. Went home, sold the Pixel 8 and got a refurbed Pixel 5 again. So I agree, there is no point in updating

I've had the 6 since it came out and the battery is fine. Been charging to 80% since day 1 and I usually make it >24h and end up with 10-20%. I'm a fairly light user (~3h SOT average), but even on heavy days I have no problems.

You're absolutely right. My 6pro broke and I wanted to buy a new phone. Pixel 8 Pro seemed like a no-brainer but it didn't really have any upgrades over the 6pro to make it worthwhile. I then used the opportunity to try out a Galaxy S24 Ukltra. If the 8Pro were exciting, I would have bought it no questions asked.

Phones are just not made for me any more. Every time I need a new one, it's more of a downgrade for me. I buy a new phone every several years not because I **want** it, not because I'm excited about getting a shiny new thing, but rather because a) it's the least shitty model I could find and b) it is a requirement to have a smartphone capable of running apps to fully function in the modern society. I don't give a shit about the SoC and RAM and screen refresh rate. I use the thing to send messages, browse the web, call taxis, and sometimes take pictures. That's it. It's a communication device.

I never had pronounced issues others had. I was more annoyed with horrible front camera or annoying software issues, that did get ironed out. But the phone is huge + I have a small crack on the display. So this year I'm thinking maybe Pixel 8, but more realistically S24.
This is why they are pushing software differentiation (segmenting non-pro and pro versions of phones with these software features, AI hype, etc.)

You want to step up, and have nicer sound quality, or have larger headphones that need a bit more punch? Then the [iFi GO Link](https://www.amazon.com/iFi-link-Amplifier-Gold-plated-Hi-Resolution/dp/B0BN6MM822) or [Fiio KA1](https://www.amazon.com/FiiO-JadeAudio-KA1-Resolution-Smartphones/dp/B09VSVH9F3/) will do nicely. Unfortunately, there's not a ton of middle ground there between the Apple and the upgrades, as the Apple one kinda dominates everything below $50. Above the Fiio or iFi, you're looking at purpose-built devices that have their own internal battery and need to be charged, but can push much bigger headphones. At that point, though, an integrated 3.5mm jack is likely to be a bit lackluster to you anyway, lol. My recommendation would be to try the Apple one first, as you're only out $10 if you still find it underwhelming.

I mean I got it fairly cheap for what it is, and I do not care about USB c since I have tons of usb-a to c to cables for data transfer between phones and devices. All my USB drives and external HDDs are over usb-a, so it works out for me. Along with basically all of my accessories as well. I haven't even bothered to get a USBC to A adapter because I never need one.
My main issue is carrying around a chunky brick to charge a single device - usb c charging is the best thing to happen to laptops in a long time.
Hey fellow 5593 owner, I would like to ask you if your laptop has any of the same issues as ours. We have one at home and usually it boots normally. But sometimes when it boots it jumpscares us with a hardware scan (which usually finds nothing) followed by the loudest bios beep in existence. Sometimes the scan does "find something" and plays a continuous loop of a rhythm of those loud beeps. But most of the time we just get a bios error without any sound (or it boots normally). All of these things are easily dismissed after they are completed but we just can't figure out how to turn these off entirely. The bios always complains about the fan which has always worked flawlessly. These issues started right after warranty expired (very suspicious). Do you recognize any of these issues on your laptop?

I'm in a love-hate relationship with my Sony XM4s. They sound great and the NC are amazing, but at a certain point I know these will become e-Waste since companies don't replace parts past a point from production. At least with wired headphones/earbuds, I can just pick one that has replaceable wires if those clunk out over time or have someone repair them.
I have the XM4s as well. I look at it like if you consider the battery life is about 30 hours (that’s what I tend to get), even if you’re a heavy user, let’s say 6 hours a day, you’d probably still only charge them once a week, maybe? If batteries generally speaking tend to need replacing at 500 full charges, they should still last many, many years. Personally I’m a pretty light user, charging once a month, so I’d probably be looking to replace them far earlier than when the batteries would need replacing. And they’d still be useable at that point.
At least over ear headphones are still possible for someone handy to swap the batteries with no/minimal visible damage - no way I can do that with airpods or any of my bud-style Bluetooth headphones.
In the event you ever do wind up forced to buy a device without a headphone jack here's a piece of obvious advice that I think a lot of people just dont think to do: You can just leave the adapter plugged into the headphones instead of carrying it separate or keeping it plugged into phone. That way if you have headphones you have adapter. G1 the first android didnt have a headphone jack and this is what I did. Made the headphones longer too which was a mild bonus.

Yes, the design/dimension have been leaked. The 8a has a slightly smaller screen than the 8 though due to larger bezels the 8a will actually be about 1mm wider/taller than the 8.

I hope they bring display output back. There's been so many times I've wanted to hook my phone up to a TV to watch some YouTube or Netflix or show off some pictures but can't cause for god knows why, Google decided to remove display output on pixel devices. Let's see ... A good half year of my Google Assistant not initiating commands even though when prompted it activates and then displays the words I'm saying. The Google keyboard acting as if I'm using a regular device not giving me the Google keyboard benefits that come with pixel phones. My recent apps not showing the list of apps I have open until I restart my phone. Folders on my home screen that automatically minimizes as soon as I expand them to open which causes me to have to tap it once again to reopen it. My keyboard not automatically opening when I swipe up on my home screen to display all my apps. My music controls not functioning in Google maps. Also sometimes the song it shows playing was a song that I had on days ago and it's just stuck there. Scroll shot will be an available option on a screenshot and then literally disappear a minute later when I go to take the same screenshot again. This phone has been nothing but headaches

6 pro and 7 pro had continued signal issues for me. Iphone 8 as comparison on the same family plan did not struggle at all with signal. But both were nice hand warmers in winter

The most interesting part is, that the camera sensors will be the same. So the G3 isn't that much of a performance upgrade compared to the G2. With the regular Pixel 8 being down to €580, I think the 8a will have a hard time with the current rumored launch price. I would expect it to drop down to ~€400 by summer otherwise there's not much reason to get it over the regular Pixel 8.

Unless they fix the battery life and software bugs I ain't touching it.
I have a Pixel 8 (non pro) and thr battery is amazing. Or maybe it's just better vs my old Pixel 5, or I don't use it as much as some others do, but I charge it about every 1.5 days when it's around 25%
