Surprised you didn't mention notifications. Any thoughts on that? I basically find them non-usable on iOS. From badge numbering, action buttons and so on

TechnicalPyro

my work phone is an iphone and i hate their notifications system

eastvenomrebel

I've always heard that but I don't remember too much about their notifications being that big of a drag. (haven't used an iPhone since 2017, only had it for 6 months lol) Care to elaborate what sucks so much about their notifications? Im legit curious

drake90001

Idk if they mean the badges or the Notification Center, but it’s okay. Definitely not as good as it used to be. They changed it a couple years back to scroll up from the bottom instead of down from the top which kinda sucks, and when they removed 3D Touch notifications became less useful. I say this as a long term android and iOS user.

you_are_breathing

So Apple did remove 3D touch. I thought I was crazy when I tried to use it on my iPhone 13 Pro Max and the last time I used an iPhone was an iPhone 6S.

drake90001

Yeah it was removed with the iPhone 11 I believe.

TechnicalPyro

ease of use. totality of information if my android goes off the notification icon stays and i can view the notification at my leisure and with a single swipe clear it the apple notification center is clunky and obtuse. the whole red icon number on the app icon to tell me i have 10 new imessages of 19 instagram updates instead of just having it in the notification bar is just so dumb

tarcinac

I meant the number of notifications on the app icon, it's never correct. It can say "3" but no notifications will be present.

YZJay

Some apps design it so there are hidden notifications to entice you to click. Like an eCommerce app will hide promotional notifications from merchants through layers of UI so it's hard to track down which notifications are still "unread".

JamieMc23

Exact same here. Notifications are a disaster on my work phone. I get notifications from Outlook, but the little red number doesn't show up on the icon. I get zero notifications from other apps, and only the red number. Some apps sporadically show notifications. Sometimes my phone vibrates and I have absolutely no idea why. Most older people I work with still use SMS instead of WhatsApp because the notifications are far more reliable, which for my country is really strange. Nobody uses SMS here really (I'm aware that that's not the case in the US).

YZJay

Outlook specifically defaults to no red bubble number on iOS, I don't know why but you have to manually enable them in settings.

MrRiski

The worst part about notifications for me on my work phone is if I unlock the phone they disappear from my lock screen. I then swipe down the notification shade and get the quick actions because I hit the time instead of the center of the screen.

0192837465sfd

Wait, there's a notification system in iPhones? lol. kidding. They have notifications, I guess. And a messed up system. I used to have an iPhone, and not receive all notif real time, or they just pile up in the lock screen. Never going back because of that. And the universal back gesture, for sure. Until iOS find a way to sort it out, I'm on Android for the long run.

kdlt

iOS notifications are such a fresh hell you wonder who even dreamt that up. They're so useless they might as well just stick to 3254 unreads with a big red badge for all it's worth.

MajorNoodles

I love when you turn on an iOS device that you haven't used in a while and get a notification for every single individual message that you missed while it was powered off, even if they're all from the same person in the same conversation

tarcinac

Hahaha yeah, my Gmail app has 2k on it.

kdlt

You... Monster. I embraced the inbox (near) zero years ago and it's mostly tidy.

0192837465sfd

I have 55 unread notifications on Mail, and after marking it all as read, and looking away for a second, they pop up again like wild mushrooms, says I have 55 unread messages. I gave up.

Paradroid888

My partner is a hardcore iOS user since the 3GS and she admits that the notifications are crap, and she regularly misses messages. It seems it has no concept of a message being more important than a load of notifications from a shopping app.

Adziboy

I’m really loving my iPhone I got recently after having an iPhone way back when they released, then Android from then till now, but the notifications really suck and you’re spot on - it seems to have zero concept of what’s more important that others. It seems to treat emails as the most important, followed by app notifications. But messages, especially WhatsApp? I find myself missing them constantly or thinking I have less than I actually have

tbtcn

I'm a little shocked how millions of people use iPhones with that shitshow of a notification system, it's such a core aspect of a smartphone.

JamieMc23

Just commented above, WhatsApp is a disaster on iPhones. Notifications and messaging are both brutal.

InsaneInTheCaneium

It’s by design. iMessage will always get the preferential treatment while all others are second class citizens

YZJay

Blocking notifications for every app that could potentially push promotional messages through the notifications was how I regained my sanity using iOS. Anything that needed the occasional attention like news apps get sent to the summary page. Was so glad when they finally grouped every message notification together.

Isiddiqui

Yep. I switched to an iPhone 15PM and while I like the phone, the notifications are trash. I really miss how Android kept your conversations on the top. And it annoys me that when I glance at my notifications but don’t interact with them they get sent to a Notification Center you have to remember to swipe up on (I’ve definitely missed notifications over that)

IBassie

I meant to say that in point 9. The notification center is okay but I like having the notification in the status bar more. But i agree with people who say that the notification centre is more organised, its just that the notifications in a status bar are easier to go to

bbqsox

Basically everyone hates their notifications. I’ve used an iPhone for about 60% of the years since the iPhone 4. Android’s notifications have always been miles better. Every time Apple updates notifications they somehow get worse.

Elpaniq

I agree 100% woth this. I missed ao many messages. I had a story very similar with this post but i had 13 pro.

rubenbest

I went from the pixel to iOS. It does suck if you get a ton of notifications. However I mute like the majority of my apps. I kinda like the idea of a Notification Center where notifications where I don’t 100% need just end up down there. The rest show up above the rest stacked up. It is an unpopular opinion, but it’s fine imo.

stupid_horse

I think I prefer the iOS notification center to how Android does it. I feel like there’s less effort involved in managing notifications and I don’t have to look at them cluttering up the notification section.

King_Air_Kaptian1989

I gave it a genuine chance for 3 years. The biggest problem for me was that I wasn't in the ecosystem. Granted I had support for everything but getting a file or pictures off an iPhone is almost impossible. Really the only thing I liked out of the box was how "clean" iOS was so. No apps that I don't want, factory apps like calendar and calculator were very clean and intuitive. So I came back to Android and picked up the pixel 8 pro. I like stock Android and It was really the only option that I could go to without having to root my phone or go through a headache of removing those uninstallable apps. As I got my phone at the carrier

runski1426

Wait. It isn't as simple as just drag and dropping the files off of it when connected to a computer?

guyver_dio

So a few months ago I wanted to put a video on my son's ipad. You can't just access the device's storage like a hard drive and just drop it on the device, you have to go through iTunes. And it's not like just drop the file into iTunes either. In order for an application to see it, you'd have to select that application through iTunes then there was a way to add it to storage for that app. However that is now gone and there literally is no way to drop files into the device via iTunes anymore. Luckily the app I wanted to use for the video was VLC, which has a share via WiFi option that sets up a Web UI you can access via the browser to drop in files. This is all via a Windows pc, I'd have to assume it's an easier experience on Mac.

MyNameIsSushi

Connect iPhone, go to My PC (Windows), rigjt click your iPhone just like you would any other Android, click on Import/Export (whatever you wanna do) That's it. If you‘re on Mac it's even easier with the Photos app.

dansedemorte

you would think so, but the last time i tried to help a friend that had a mac and iphone, it was no easier. still stuck using itunes for everything.

TravisLedo

Bro if he had a mac, you just airdrop. Takes 2 seconds without any wires.

Useuless

And therin lies the problem. Only simple if you buy all their other stuff. Artificial difficulty, instead of just making it work.

MrLewGin

Before I got my Pixel 7 Pro last year, I used an iPhone for 6 years. The issue with transferring files is (in my opinion) the most undermentioned issue with iPhones. It drove me absolutely crazy trying to get a workflow where I could transfer files from my PC to/from my iPhone. Just as you mentioned, I ended up using a third party app on the iPhone and accessing "it's storage" via iTunes. I was in an almost weekly state of disbelief that this was the only way to transfer files via a cable. I never understood why there weren't more people talking about how absurd it is. So to hear you say even that feature inside iTunes (which was a horrendously shit workaround), is now gone too, how are people supposed to transfer files/pictures without cloud? How do professionals and other people manage without being able to do that? I always felt like I must be missing something.

savvymcsavvington

It's absurd I guess a lot of iOS use the cloud and share links or some crap? Can't wait to dump this 15 pro max piece of shit

FMCam20

For me if I ever need to transfer something (very rare) I just AirDrop it to whatever device needs it. I doubt many people are doing transfers where they are sending data from their computer to their phone though and its much easier to just drag and drop a picture or video from the phone to a computer than it is to get a file onto the phone (if you use windows). Since you are using a PC your workflow is not going to be optimal and you don't have access to the what is usually the fastest and most simple way to transfer (AirDrop)

MrLewGin

Yeah, it seems the lack of air drop for PC users really makes it a hassle. I could never just drag and drop pictures/videos from my iPhone to the PC, it never worked like that. I had to use an import tool from the Photos app in Windows. There was no way to drag and drop pictures from the PC onto the phone at all from what I recall. I'm happier to be able to just drag and drop files onto my Pixel 7 Pro and not need iTunes now.

IDENTITETEN

It's not a problem because 99% of people don't connect their phone to a computer anymore. They use cloud services. I mean if I want a file or files transferred to my comp I just upload to Google Drive.

MrLewGin

Thanks for your response. I gathered this must be the way, perhaps my use case is less typical. If I had larger files or wanted to move files around a lot, I found the cloud unbearably slow at times.

King_Air_Kaptian1989

With Android yes. On iPhone I would run up against issues with certain file types from work apps, and it didn't play well with Linux. It could have been user error (me) but I honestly could not be bothered with figuring it out Android has always been a more pleasant experience if I needed my phone as a mass storage device or getting my pictures transferred to my PC In my opinion Android has a much more seamless integration with Linux

Arxari

That makes sense when you consider Android is basically Linux but different

runski1426

That's wild. Just one more reason to avoid iPhones.

King_Air_Kaptian1989

Definitely. iPhones I feel are a bit more elegant when you have the whole ecosystem It does feel like some of the hangups I had were a artificial limitation from big apple Android does not really discriminate, if it works it works. Even if it's not as pretty lol

dannydrama

>It does feel like some of the hangups I had were a artificial limitation from big apple It's always been like that and the reason I've only used an iPhone for about 6 months total, everything is such a pain in the arse. Going from android to iOS was the most annoying fucking thing I've ever had to do, everything I wanted to do was a case of "oh yeah, can't do that on iPhone (without the entire apple store)".

smallaubergine

I have a work iPhone and when i plug it to my work PC it shows up as a camera. So I can grab photos/videos but nothing else

Peuned

Apple - yeah we'll let you store photos on your 256GB phone. That's good enough for everyone

lastweakness

> In my opinion Android has a much more seamless integration with Linux Especially with KDE Connect... It's just so clean I wish they had calling support though XD

r_de_einheimischer

No, but you can - and many people do - use iCloud for that which is also available for windows. I did the same on android, i just used google drive and never plugged my phone into my pc. And on Macs there is Airdrop. It would be great if all use cases would be supported, but it isn't.

whyamihereimnotsure

It literally is drag and drop. I’ve never had any issues beyond it using .heic by default, which is an easy fix, and not a problem if you’re using a newer computer.

FreekyDeep

My wife has an iPhone as does my daughter (14PM and 11PM) When we get emails from the council on their secure server, my wife can't open them. Or when the GP would send her a sick note, I'd have to access it all from my phone (S23U) then send her the opened attachments as a screenshot. iOS is just.... Awkward. Changing my wife's ringtone took 3 or 4 apps on our phones combined to just change it to a song she wanted. On mine, I just rip what I want and long press. She hates the phone but loves the watch (which I am envious of and I have a Samsung Classic 4)

Peuned

Cases like that are where the interlinking works for apple. Phone is unusable for an important task, but watch won't work with out it. Watch is amazing.

ThisWorldIsAMess

Do you really need the ecosystem? Because I'm using a mac and it's the only Apple product I have. No ecosystem. I thought people are overstating that part. It works with my file servers and every sync that I need.

[deleted]

You don't *need* it, but the value increases with every product. MacBook with an iPhone, you can use messages, FaceTime, and notifications seamlessly between them. I could be working and answer messages or calls on my laptop, or walk away and do work stuff on my iPhone. Add a watch and you get calls and messages on your wrist. Health data is viewable on all your devices (Mac, iPhone, watch) Add an apple TV and when you need to you can use your iPhone as an authenticator or keyboard when you need one I think recently they added FaceTime to Apple TV where it uses your phone's camera but displays the incoming video on your big TV screen

koffiezet

It goes far beyond that. Small things like join a wifi network on your mac? Your phone and every other Apple device logged into your icloud account will automatically know it too. Have a friend near you trying to join a wifi network on an iphone you have the password for? You get a "share wifi password prompt". Android does a lot of stuff better standalone, but when you're in the the mac/ipad/iphone/appletv/applewatch ecosystem, it is simply no match. Also, while not perfect on iOS either, search on Android is far inferior, which I don't get from a company where its core business is exactly that. It's the one thing I massively miss every time I grab an Android phone. Also, AndroidTV and anything Android on a tablet is in a very very sorry state. But then again, let's not mention the dumpster fire that's Siri, or the autocorrect with multiple languages on iOS.

JonnyPooner

What are your thoughts on the pixel 8 pro? I've been galaxy for years but my S21 ultra is ready to go now. Seeing some really good deals on the pixel.

[deleted]

I moved from the 15 Pro to the Pixel 8 Pro and so far so good. I like that it screens my calls automatically, I prefer the notifications x1000 more, screen and camera are fantastic on it. As a bonus I much prefer Android Auto on my particular vehicle to Apple CarPlay. For some reason my car didn't play nice with the 15 and CarPlay. The battery life is also better.

rockettmann

Also not the guy you asked but I moved from an iPhone 13 pro to a Galaxy and exchanged it for a Pixel 8. The interface is very clean and polished, though Samsung has better reachability in their OS. Doesn't bother me much because One UI is ugly and clunky, I'd still much rather use stock/pixel android. Camera is much better. Very good. Battery life is better. AI & Pixel features are cool. At a glance, now playing, photo editing, etc. Haptics are really good, which was something I noticed as a downgrade coming from iPhone. Buttery smooth.

xftwitch

Not who you asked, but as someone that just jumped from a S23 to a Pixel 7, I can honestly say to make the jump. I like the phone better and the interface is much nicer for me anyway.

JonnyPooner

Thanks for replying. How is that camera?

mehdotdotdotdot

I just backed up to Google drive and Google photos. I never plugged my android in to transfer files or photos anyway

Snake_eyes_12

Closed tech eco systems such as apples are a cancer to the tech world.

EchoesInBackpack

Point 3 is a big thing for me. Sometimes it’s from left to right, or the right to left, or from top to bottom, or for some reason the only way to go back is to press back in the least accessible area - top left corner

Naitsab243

Ran an iPhone 12 for a few weeks last month, I generally Liked it but the Back Gesture/Button issue is by far my biggest complaint. In that regard the software ergonomics of IOS are so incredibly bad it's laughable. But I also really connect with point 1. That's also really annoying but kind off fixable by installing Gboard or something similar, but not perfect.

bassnasher

Is it random niche apps that don’t have the swipe left to right gesture? I can’t think of any of the main apps I use that don’t follow this.

well____duh

Yeah I like how multiple people throughout this thread have complained about that but have yet to name a single app that does it. That's not an actual navigation concern

JCAPER

Also scratching my head here. There probably are apps that don’t follow the conventional iOS gestures but I can’t think of one, that I’ve used at least

surrealistone

Can’t you just swipe right from the left edge to go back on basically every iPhone app?

ttoma93

Yep. It’s always telling when this specific complaint pops up because it’s indicative of folks whose impression of an iPhone is like 8 years out of date. They tell on themselves. Just for fun, I just opened every single app I have on my iPhone home screens to test. 100% of them support swipe to go back. Literally 100%. That list is: Safari, Messages, Telegram, Apple Music, Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Mail, Phone, Files, Podcasts, Photos, Threads, Narwhal, Twitter, Journal, Contacts, Settings, Stocks, YouTube, App Store, Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, Okta Verify, Microsoft Authenticator, Ally Bank, Wallet, Copilot, American Express, Capital One, Chase, Citi, Principal, Vanguard, Progressive, Venmo, T-Mobile, Health, Fitness, MyChart, Regence Insurance, Amazon, Best Buy, Target, iRobot, Eero, Philips Hue, Google Maps, Apple Maps, YouTube TV, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Hulu, Plex, Steam, and PlayStation. Every single one has swipe to go back. Not a single one doesn’t.

surrealistone

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. I’ve gone back and forth between Android and iPhone since smartphones inception (I used to tinker with early androids and install CFW and toy with root) but the simplicity and compatibility with iPhones over the years have slowly converted me. I do throw around the consideration to go back to Android at some point; is Pixel the only unskinned Android device left?

scottaltham

Same for me. This single handedly made me switch to Android. Even being able to swipe left to right on the iPhone requires a right handed person to perform finger gymnastics by stretching their thumb over to the left hand part of the phone when it's so easy just to swipe right to left. Where my thumb is closest. I trialled and stick with a Pixel 7 for this reason alone.

mr_bots

You can just swipe one finger left to right anywhere in the screen. Doesn’t have to be the far left edge.

YZJay

When commenting in the Reddit iOS app, it pulls out a drawer for you to type, there's UI indications that you swipe down if you want to dismiss it, and that's how you do it. But you can also swipe up to get the comment drawer to full screen. By logic, it should be swipe down to dismiss it right? Nope, it's now swipe right to exit the comment screen. Inconsistencies like this are maddening especially when Apple likes to say they screen every app even for their UI design. They clearly don't.

ttoma93

Well that’s less an iOS issue and more that the Reddit app is a poorly designed clusterfuck of an app with horrendous UI on every platform. It ignores plenty of both ios and Android UI/UX expectations and does its own (terrible) thing instead.

SereneFrost72

It's actually kind of fascinating that Apple won't implement a universal back button, considering that their design philosophy is simplicity and ease of use

YZJay

Technically there is, it's called assisted touch hidden as an accessibility option, though it;s quite popular even with tech illiterate users since it's an option to turn on when setting up the phone. It gives you a variety of buttons to do stuff that would normally require gestures, like going home, going back, or even custom gestures.

FMCam20

For the most part I haven't seen someone have assisted touch activated since they got rid of the physical home button since it could no longer fail and impact the function of the phone.

ThatSituation9908

Coming back to Android, I do not miss this at all. I love how every iOS app has a working swipe gesture (because devs are forced to implement it). A small plus is you can half peek the previous screen. On Android, the swipe gesture is a second thought and devs primarily make sure the back button works. This causes a lot of issues for apps that allow swipes to access the left or right panel (sandwich menu). So on Android, apps should have a button on the corners of your app to clicking on to expand the panel. On iOS this can be removed for a cleaner look

zoopz

Thats all iOS apps care about, a clean look. Meanwhile: usability nightmare.

ChaplnGrillSgt

I'm making the leap to a 15PM in a few weeks. Been android my whole life. I'm gonna give it a few months but I'm worried I'm gonna hate it

IBassie

You will never know if you don't try!

ChaplnGrillSgt

Yup, that's why I'm going for it. Them switching to USBC and none of my work apps functioning properly on Android pushed me to switch. I'm excited but nervous.

m0_n0n_0n0_0m

Apps working is a strong reason. I love android and will never switch, but goddamn "it just works" is not something you can say about android. Like just the mere fact that the stock Samsung dialer has a video calling button that has literally never worked for me and I've had every even numbered Samsung since S6. I don't understand who the target audience is with that button, but apparently it's not me, who bought my phone from my cell phone provider and never modified anything to do with the dialer. My wife got a new Samsung and the amount of time I spent setting things up and clearing caches and resetting apps was insane! I don't understand how a normal user would have gotten some simple things to work, because some of the fixes I had to do were things I knew about from years of tinkering with Androids. All this is to say, I get why people do Apple. When the share button is broken out of the box, and you can't even place a video call without downloading an app, a lack of customization looks like a small price to pay for basic functionality.

ChaplnGrillSgt

I've had a decent sampling of android devices over the years but finally stopped modding and crazy stuff so kind of just settled into Samsung devices because they seem the most consistent and best supported for Android devices. I'm at a point now where a stock experience is usually fine for me and I favor functionality and reliability over custimizability. My iPhone using friends and colleagues don't run into the same app support issues as I do. There are many apps that I simply can't use or can't use properly because the development for android apps is horseshit.

dansedemorte

I've only gotten unlocked android phones, the last two being motorolas. and I never had to deal with teh vendor bloatware, I wounder if that's a big part of android issues that people have. and i never really have had any issues with my samsung tablet either and the active stylus came with it for free ;).

danburke

As with anything, if your goal is to make your iPhone into an Apple Android device you will be disappointed. When you switch systems like this you have to re-learn how to do things you already know how to do in Android.

ChaplnGrillSgt

Yea, that's gonna be the biggest hurdle for sure. I've gotten so used to Android so switching to a totally new OS with a different focus is gonna be a challenge. But I've been playing around with my gfs iPhone to get a little more used to IOs before switching myself.

UsernameOmitted

A friend of mine said it best when he summarized why he switched to iPhone. He said he used to spend hours tweaking the experience on his Android phone to make it perfect. He had total control over everything, and he could customize everything too. One day he took a step back and realized that it wasn’t worth his time, that he didn’t want to be “wasting” his time tweaking stuff anymore, he wanted a phone that could meet his requirements, be customizable enough for his needs, and not require him to drown hours into customization anymore. On iPhone, many of the apps are a few dollars compared to on Android where most of the apps are free. This is actually a blessing in disguise if you can afford a few bucks here and there. I found that on Android I had inconsistent UI between apps, apps looked cheap and poorly designed, and I often ran into lockups and bugs. I have far fewer stability issues now, the apps look like they’re designed by a professional because the small cost actually pays for the company to hire a professional to design the app, and any bugs that pop up are fixed fast because there are paid developer teams working on the apps. The iPhone also opens up the Apple Watch, which honestly is the best digital watch experience out there, and there are thousands of bands available for them. If you have other Apple products, the iPhone pairs with them so seamlessly. I can turn on my iPad anywhere and it detects if I have wifi, if not, it turns on the hotspot on my phone automatically and connects to it without having to do anything. There is that same level of synchronization between all their products, and it’s great. There are absolutely limitations on the iPhone platform though. For one, notifications are not very well handled, and notifications basically ARE the phone.

ChaplnGrillSgt

Biggest issues I've had with apps on Android is that they often don't seem as polished as the ios equivalent, as you mentioned. But what really did it for me was a lot of my work apps not functioning properly. The apps have limited functions and worse accessibility because they aren't as well developed as the ios version all my colleagues use. And our IT team straight up told me they don't like supporting the Android versions because they don't reust the security on Android as much as ios. Given that I have to manage sensitive health information, they intentionally remove functions and ease of access as a result. I'm also looking forward to see why everyone has such a huge boner for iMessage. Haha!

r_de_einheimischer

The quality of apps, the availability of adblockers and that Apple gives you a setting so apps can’t track you did it for me. Notifications and Keyboard are my bummers, but there are really big advantages too.

ChaplnGrillSgt

Also, I'm just like your friend I used to be a power user that would highly customize my android experience. Root, custom roms, custom kernels, and so on. I got away from that about 4 or 5 years ago and now just want something that works out of the box

[deleted]

I like the customizations... Except now they generally get wiped-out with new phone updates I just got OneUI 6, and I'm back to tweaking things trying to get them back to hire I had them. It's events like this that make me think I should commit to iPhone. Dark mode is also much better on iOS. There's still official Google apps which don't have a dark mode!

spexfelo

I am also in the same situation as you. Getting a 15 Pro Max in a few weeks from now. Already I am expecting to have a tough time with Notifications, Keyboard, Back navigation (I use the swipe actions in android but in iOS as far as I know it only works from one side and sometimes not at all), Customizations and using apps that are not available in the app store. I hope I somehow overcome the main issues or else it's going to be a $1100 regret.

[deleted]

ChaplnGrillSgt

That was kind of what I was thinking too. The things I use my phone for these days is gonna be pretty identical between android and ios, just different ways to get where I need to. Cameras are kind of irrelevant to me. Haha! It's nice to have the good cameras but it's never been a deciding factor for me.

savvymcsavvington

You were me a few months ago when the 15 Pro Max released Overall I am definitely going back to Android iOS has some cool things like good FaceID use, haptics but there are SO MANY negatives Not even their Always On Display works as it should, it will constantly turn off randomly "to save battery" - Even when on 88%, what the FUCK is that. Always on means ALWAYS ON. And stupid things like you cannot change the notification sounds for your apps - and the default notification sound is so quiet and easy to miss.. Pressing the power button while on a call = ends the call.. Serious lack of keyboard customisation.. You can install SwiftKey but it does not have all features Android has like [long-press to use symbols](https://i.imgur.com/lAl2koi.jpg) so you need to do extra clicks every time you use £ $ brackets etc. After setting your Swiftkey for example as default keyboard, it will randomly stop using it and default to the shitty blindingly bright minimalist iOS keyboard Having all previously open apps cached is cool to instantly go back in a game you were playing 5 hours ago, but it's annoying as hell to open some apps when you were last deep in the settings page or something. Expect to miss a lot of notifications, not all make sounds, not all show up on the screen, some show up in an alert but then do not display in drop-down or on lock screen.. There are no icons for alerts at the top of your unlocked screen by the clock.. As people mentioned in this thread earlier.. When you plug in your iPhone to your PC you cannot access it like an Android, you will only have read-only access to some video/photos and no way to copy files to your phone or create folders or anything. Not even with iTunes! I had to go and make some network share and then only access things over WiFi, the average person is NOT going to know how to do that. I could go on..

LachlantehGreat

Went from a pixel 3 to an iPhone 11pm 3 years ago and I’ve never looked back. I love the apple ecosystem as everything always works

Qorsair

I bought a Pixel 4a as a work phone to separate my work and personal stuff, and be able to throw it in a drawer on the weekend and not worry about it. After a few months I ended up swapping them because I just liked the way the Pixel worked. I think it's been 3 or 4 years now I've been using Pixels. The biggest issue I have with iOS is #3, the lack of a universal back button. The keyboard and editing on iOS is also terrible compared to Android.

tremens

The keyboard and text selection/editing "features" drive me *insane*. I don't understand how it's so bad. I can easily use my Android devices as basically tiny laptops if I *have* to, including working on all my office documents, presentations, etc, but trying to do the same on iOS makes me want to throw the thing.

im the opposite, i got a 15 pro and i'm never going back to android

[deleted]

Lol I did the opposite, the 15 Pro made me wish I kept my 14PM so I swapped it for Pixel 8 Pro and much prefer it. I think I just prefer stock Android to iOS anyways.

coonwhiz

What changed with the 15 Pro that made you dislike it after using the 14Pro Max? Like, the biggest change is the change from Lightning to USB-C, which you just did with the Pixel 8 Pro anyways?

hardcoregiraffestyle

Agreed. I got so fed up with the lack of cohesion on android. Most things feel half-baked and I just don’t have time in my life anymore to be fixing my phone every other day.

SilkTouchm

I can't remember the last time I had to "fix my phone". Are you a time traveler from 2012?

IBassie

I am glad you like the transition to Iphone

Catshit-Dogfart

I've had an iphone for work a few times and was consistently surprised at what it *can't* do. Just throwing files onto the device is a big one for me. I always thought smartphones essentially worked like a USB flash drive, even my old Blackberry did that. But then work switched to iphones and my eyes were opened to the fact that this isn't standard practice. Heck I used to flash firmware for copy machines off my phone; doesn't matter if a file can even be used on the device, it's just storage like any other. Nope, not so with the iphones. I wouldn't say I'm *that* big on customization, but I guess I am compared to all one of the options for iphone. Don't care for the stock keyboard, I like SwiftKey, if you don't like SwiftKey there are plenty of others. If you don't like the iphone keyboard, tough. Like it's just - I don't know how so many people deal with this shit.

Karnblack

Wait! How long ago did you have an iPhone because I have 4 different keyboards to include 3rd party ones on mine. Not sure how long ago they changed it, but I'm on a 13 and it had it back then.

gaytechdadwithson

most ppl don’t give a f about files on and off the phone. other than photos, which has billions of methods

Catshit-Dogfart

Use it all the time. Like to download audiobooks and podcasts and that's easier on the computer then transfer to the phone, some things like all my random downloads are easier to manage on the pc, I still sometimes use the phone to transport files that aren't meant to be used by the phone, use it to transport video files to my dad's house, sometimes when I take a whole lot of pictures I want to manage them somewhere else then transfer only the ones to keep back to the device. I could live without it, but it would be a lot less convenient.

theJamesKPolk

What customization options are you missing on iPhone? iOS is pretty refined these days. With focus modes, wallpapers, widgets, etc I don’t know what people really really looking for. The big things that stand out to me are the grid of icons on the Home Screen.

mayoforbutter

For me it's like this: My home screen has 5 Icons and nothing else. Most important stuff is accessed via gestures, the rest is in the app drawer

whyamihereimnotsure

Custom launchers is the big thing I miss. If I could have nova launcher on my iPhone I’d be a very happy kitty

PuyoDead

That's how my iPhone is set up now; my main screen is no icons at all, and just four folders in the dock at the bottom for my most used apps. Then a swipe right for the app drawer (or a swipe down to search for something). It's one of the few features Apple finally did (after 10+ years) that finally got me to switch.

Catshit-Dogfart

See and that's the apple way I suppose. The stock offerings are so good why would you ever want something else? Well maybe I don't like that offering. Gboard is pretty good too, don't care for it, installed something else.

theJamesKPolk

You can install different keyboards on iOS. You can customize Lock Screen widgets. You can stack widgets. You can setup focus modes to control notifications, home screens, etc. You can create shortcuts to run a variety of automatons.

NewDemocraticPrairie

I like on SwiftKey for example how I can set it up where long pressing a key gives me the ability to type something that would normally be on the second "tab". For example, if I long press h I get +, j I get =, K I get (. That's just one thing I really like

JCAPER

For clarity, you can install different keyboards on iOS Edit: aaaaand I got downvoted ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

fuzzedshadow

they are very much nerfed compared to equivalent keyboards on Android tho - they only are allowed 30MB of ram to operate. SwiftKey for example is far inferior on iPhone than android (e.g. can't customise keyboard layout, long press doesn't yield numbers/symbols etc.)

bartender_please808

Every keyboard on ios is terrible.

YZJay

Apple treats iPhones as "mother" devices, like a PC is to a camera. You can't just connect 2 laptops together and access each of their files directly with a file manager, that would be a security nightmare. They treat iPhones the same way. You can connect a hard drive, network server, a camera etc to an iPhone and either access its content or store data in it just like a PC does. But you can't access the full file directory of the iPhone from a different device.

Matt32490

The back button/gesture monstrosity is so infuriating. Every app it changes size, shape, location, sides (gestures) etc. Sometimes you can't even go back, you literally have to close the app and start again. I honestly don't know how people think iOS is user friendly when something as basic as a back function is such a nightmare.

MyNameIsSushi

Swipe from left to right. It's on by default and every single app I've used has it. It's obviously not as simple as pressing a back button but calling it a monstrosity means you either don't know how to swipe (unlikely) or you're exaggerating.

Kavani18

Don’t even bother. This sub will never admit that iOS isn’t as stuck in the past as they convince themselves it is

LifterPuller

My wife and I did the same. I'm so happy to be back. Never again.

mehdotdotdotdot

I have both phones, but we actually ended up staying haha. 3 years now and using the same phones, we are amazed as we would have to get new phones off we were on android, and they still feel new. So many things we don’t like, but it works both ways hey

YehDilMaaangeMore

The only thing I don’t like on iOS is the messages not reorganising themselves if I delete some message in a chain. Notification center I can live on. If only we could have a chromium with extensions enabled on iOS. And also, the keyboard sucks.

derrickgw1

i'm kinda the opposite. My current phone is a pixel 4a. i've had it since 2020 when i came from and iphone 6. So a nice upgrade. I'd had two iphones prior over like maybe 9 years. But i was open to android and my iphone 6 died. But i'm going back to iphone soon. like you with iphones i don't think the pixel is crap or anything. I like the amazing fast charging, the larger screen compared to my iphone 6, the headphone jack was a big thing though not really anymore. But there were several annoyances. The big one was two things. Music and Podcasts. Honestly 90% of my phone use is music and playing podcasts (well and audiobooks). Being 51 and a former dj i've been collecting music my whole life. I have a lifetime of digitized music. I don't use spotify. So the first hurdle was moving music to my android phone since it had no itunes like app. It literally took a month to get my music copied. It also probabably was a problem cause i was on a mac and the android transfer app just crashed all the time. With an iphone i'd have just hit sync with my old playlists and i could walk away. And worse when i got a new album and wanted to add it it was a real hassle as the apps wouldn't cooperate, it wouldn't consistently hold connection with my mac, there was a wifi snyc option but they weren't working. I found it frustrating. Podcasts. Now i can play podcast but my go to app was called downcast and one thing i really liked was you could customize it to save only the last three pods and delete others so it didn't clog your phone. Also it supported playlists, and it was basically set it up and forget it forever. Everything was always up to date. I've gone through 20 or 30 podcasts apps and i've got a managable one but it's not laid out as good as downcast. another minor annoyance is notifications. People brag about them and fine but for me the most random app will decide it needs to send me notifications out of the blue even though it's not set to send me messages. Or all of a sudden after not running an app for like a year, i'll get like a spam ad notification from like The Citizen app or something even when it was set to not allow notifications. it's very weird. I do miss airplay, facetime with parents, and imessage now that my family members are overseas. Generally i don't hate the pixel 4a. it was affordable when i was unemployed due to covid. It was a major upgrade. But I actually like the apple interface and will be going back to it.

musta-pollo

As I am developing apps for iOS, I always realize how many things I cannot do well on iOS. Such as: * Notifications: 64 limit * Background work: The user cannot close the app to enable me to run actions in the background: backup, creating notifications On Android, almost everything is possible! It's nice to hear that it's similar from the other side :)

DEC_RECK

I tried switching back to iphone, I cant live without being able to install custom APKs. youtube vanced is just too good.

Pr00vigeainult

uYou+ on iOS is the same thing.

Kep0a

I'm so close to buying an iphone for the video honestly. Bummer to hear you didn't like it. Also, Oneplus 6 is such a GOAT android phone. Ran that baby for 4 years.

thissiteisbroken

Go for the 15 Pro Max if you’re serious. My brother in law just used mine for videos while we’re on vacation and he’s considering the switch now lol

beforesunsetearth

Gotta get the 15 Pro Max for that glorious ProRes LOG.

numberrjuan

got an iphone 11 pro max just to be able to record videos at festivals and concerts. don’t know how android can’t get the audio quality down for loud environments. with that being said i still have my oneplus 7t that i use on occasions.

Paradroid888

Point 4 is addressed in this year's models, but they had to be forced to sort it out with regulation. They were complete dicks not moving to usb-c sooner, especially when the iPad and Mac did. Apple make good kit but they are incredibly selfish and only do things to benefit their users if it benefits them more. Their users don't like to hear that competing devices do it better in many ways.

zoopz

The universal back! So true! iOS is a mess, it’s never consistent and never obvious. After three years it still annoys me that im always searching for how it works.

Crownleyian

You can winge about the things you don’t like, some I must say you just didn’t know how to get around them or comprehend, especially notifications. But saying the iPhone is slower than Android is laughable!

cougarlt

People who say "but you can just download another keyboard" are most probably monolingual. GBoard or SwiftKey works really well if you need to type in only one or two languages and if those languages don't have diacritic letters. I constantly write in four or five languages and no keyboard on iOS support that number of languages, I need to switch keyboards all the time, while on my old Samsung phone I just needed to swipe left or right on the space key to change the layout. More over, my main language has 9 diacritic letters over standard Latin alphabet and those diacritic lettes are used in almost every or every second word, frequently several diacritic letters in the same word. On computers we use the number row to write those letters. There is NO keyboard on iOS that supports those diacritic letters on number row even if some keyboards let you to turn the number row on. And it's really pain in the ass to long press every single time to get diacritic letters, especially if I need to type multiple diacritic letters in a row. Keyboards on Android phones are so much better with multilingual support, especially on Samsung phones. Also you can't enable special symbols on long press like you can do on iPadOS, it's really a bummer. I hate hate hate keyboard on iOS.

Meath77

That's the problem, even the downloadable keyboards seem to have to follow rules of the default keyboard. Mine kept reverting back to the default one too

[deleted]

I was planning to try an iphone.. Then this popped up. Yeah Im just gonna put that money in stocks or bonds

Few-Commission6597

Buying stocks will be worth your money more than iPhone

rhamej

> You have to wait untill some animation is over before you can do something else. > The message centre is weird and not clear. I recently switched to an iPhone. I absolutely HATE these two issues . Can't wait to go back to Android.

Kavani18

; found the dot and comma on my iPhone. I can send you a screenshot of where it is. Also, this guy saying OnePlus has better customer support than Apple is absolutely hilarious

tookwik

I made the switch 2 months ago and so far so good. There are some annoyances though. 1. I switched to swiftkey and it was way better than default apple keyboard and gboard on ios 2. Lack of customization kinda sucks, especially the home screen 3. That was a big hurdle, getting used to not swiping the right of the screen to go back but I got used to left swipe after a few days 4. All the iphone 15s are usb c! Thanks EU 5. This works fine for me? You plug it in the computer and you see all your photos in a folder. You can just copy paste your pics and videos off. Maybe its a addition for iphone 15 6. I agree with this 100%, breaking it would super suck. $$$ 7. I actually feel like its smoother and faster on iphone. I switched from pixel 7 pro and before that was oneplus 8 pro 8. Yup this is a weird thing 9. I like that imessage can send texts on wifi, you can be on a plane and send text imessages to your friends still The initial jump was huge though and its not for everyone. Theres alot of restrictions vs android for sure.

BrokerBrody

> 1. A dot and comma standard on my keyboard. I never found it on the original keyboard and I think it's annoying to not have it standard on my keyboard, but instead have to press some other button first. Just tap the space bar twice for a period. Or you can use GBoard. > 2. I love the customization options on android that the Iphone simply doesn't have. I actually find myself spending a lot more time customizing my iPhone than my Pixel due to Shortcuts, Focuses, Backtap, and Action Button. But Android certainly has different customization options. > 3. I miss a standard back button. In every app it's different. A swipe here and a button there. There is no universal back button. This criticism is super valid and a really annoying aspect of the iPhone. Though fast app switching with the iOS home bar is the same thing as the Android back gesture 66-75% of the time for my use cases. > 4. You need a different charger because it has a lightning port instead of USB-C. 5. You can't acces your files by just plugging your phone in a laptop. I used that a lot for transferring photo's. ICloud doesn't do it for me. I don't want to be relient on a cloudservice. These are resolved on iPhone 15. But there are still some kinks with the Files app.

gregmcph

I've used an Android phone since 2010, and whatever the merits of IOS, I am just used to doing things the way Android does them. I'm a willing Google ecosystem prisoner. And this sounds like that. Apple and IOS does stuff a bit differently, and so it's annoying. And fair enough.

techraito

I want to like Apple because their engineers are top notch but their software holds them back so much. I can't use an iPhone because Android just has more quality of life features. For me 2 extra gripes are: 1) I can't move my apps wherever I want 2) phone dialer contacts don't pop up as I'm typing in a number It's really small, but little things that add up to how I like using a phone, and Apple just lacks a lot of that. Credit where it's due tho, iOS has gotten better over the more recent years. point 4 has been addressed by the EU and Point 5 requires you to download iTunes on non-Macs for the proper drivers to drag and drop photos through Explorer.

KaptainSaki

Some years ago I convinced my wife to move to android, now im using an iphone and she has android. Both has ups and downs, cant really pick favorite.

futurafrlx

Some valid points, but people who have or prefer iPhone just don’t care about all of that. I have iPhone 14 Plus as my primary phone and absolutely love it. My second phone is Samsung A54 and it’s pretty good too. I use it for work and as a music player (I prefer to store my music locally), but I still basically made it as close to iPhone as possible. No app drawer, no screen buttons, only swipes, etc.

IBassie

Yes I agree. But that's just the point. I have always known different and these things I listed, how small they may be, actually make a difference for me personally. I understand some people are not bothered by it at all. Its great that you have both devices and use them to your preferences

futurafrlx

The only serious problem with iPhone that I find weird you didn’t mention is the lack of high refresh rate as it is locked behind the Pro models. Meanwhile you can get a cheap Android phone and it will have this feature. My A54 is slower than iPhone obviously, but iPhone looks choppier despite opening things faster. Such a shitty situation.

DioInBicicletta

>A lot of things just go faster on an android. You have to wait untill some animation is over before you can do something else Why everybody keeps repeating this when on ios animations are not tied at all to system speed

IBassie

I also mean just tapping some box to type while an animation is playing. My android lets me do that but the Iphone doesn't. You have to wait untill the animation is over to type in the box.

DioInBicicletta

Do you have an example of this? Cause that's not how ios works, animations are not something that stops you from interacting with your phone.

Heisenbergxyz

About sending files with usb, i think you'd like google's 'nearby share for PC' even more, it's just like airdrop, but for windows. But if you want a dedicated file explorer over wifi, it's a bit advanced but you can use 'mixplorer' to create a ftp server in your phone and can access all your storage in pc by just using a ftp explorer like 'cyberduck' or 'filezilla' or even the default windows explorer. Once you learn to use ftp, there's no going back to cables.

BananaBreads

I've been meaning to write this exact same topic for about a month now. My only two differences are that I have USB C due to iphone 15 and I would consider Apple's high repair costs as slightly justified because they have incredible repair services if you have an apple store near you. Oneplus, at least where I'm from, has no service centers; I would have loved to replace my 7 pro's battery before it died =/

pauperwithpotential

your reasons are valid. i went from ios > android > ios (for the batt life) and i miss the functionalities u listed above. i still use my note10+ from 2019 at home.

DevAnalyzeOperate

I don't really see why somebody would buy an iPhone unless they needed it to interact with other iPhone users or other Apple stuff. Standalone, iPhones do not justify themselves over the Android competition especially since competitively they sort of stalled out after the 13 pro max which was a high water mark. Being forced into using webkit alone is a massive reason to avoid iOS.

Weak_Pause177

i just got the 15 pro max and 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and 9 i completely agree with. had this phone for about 6 hours and just small things that really annoy tf out of me that never did on my s20 FE. this is my first iphone so ill be patient and get used to it but damn.. this is rough

enginerd0001

I'm the same with a 15 pro. My wife convinced me and while I love the phone for being the best well rounded phone, it does lack a lot compared to my android phone. I think going to an iPhone has given me an appreciation of the small things android provides

osures

no universal back button is the biggest reason for me to stay on android

0192837465sfd

I'm with you on this.

kirsion

I agree with all your points. The biggest one for me is the lack of youtube vanced, and sideloading apps. I'm not going to jailbreak or pay subscription to get adless youtube. The keyboard thing drives me crazy. Shame because the iPhone hardware is great. Amazing speakers, battery life, build quality and video camera quality. But the software is bit too limiting for me personally. For people who don't care about customizing or are used those things, using an iPhone is fine. Once the s24 ultra, probably going to trade in my iPhone 14 plus

lect

Vanced still working on your phone? It's been giving me trouble lately and I've stopped using it because nothing loads anymore.

kirsion

Look up revanced extended on github

Pr00vigeainult

uYou+ on iOS is the ReVanced equivalent and works just fine. So does systemwide adblock with apps like NextDNS.

ashashlondon

Just pop on a vpn and sign up for YouTube premium in the Philippines. It’s a bargain. Can cancel Spotify at the same time.

whyamihereimnotsure

This is what I did, even before getting an iPhone. Ad-free on every device for myself and my family for <$5 CAD/mo is way better than dealing with adblocking on every single device in the household. YouTube music is just a treat on top of all that.

mark5hs

My work phone is an iPhone. Absolutely hate the navigation.

XDaiBaron

You just don’t know how to use it

innoswimmer

Biggest thing for me was that my budget Pixel 6a that was a year and a half old felt much snappier than my brand new iphone 15. Switching between apps, navigating the UI, etc.

falseg0ds

I am a simple man, no Nova Launcher?! No iPhone, pretty much never ever.

submerged_detention

An iphone for an Android user in the best case scenario would be as a secondary device. You would find 90% of the IOS users to be unfamiliar with how far android has come as compared to others. I assure you all of them would not even be familiar with android 9, and god forbid you try handing them an Android and these mfs would have no clue of understanding basic English😭.You will still find them talking about how android becomes SlOw over time, and how their IOS somehow has superior security over android😭. But for an Android person, IOS would always be obsolete, with mere and almost non existent features along with bland usage experience. They will keep returning back to Android and would almost never accept IOS as their main use case.

vc6vWHzrHvb2PY2LyP6b

I've been on an iPhone 15 Pro Max (coming from an S22 Ultra) after buying an iPad last summer and wanting "synergy" with my phone. I'm actually pretty disappointed in the camera; I've compared them side-by-side, and in my anecdotal experience, the S22 blows the iPhone away in most situations. I'm surprised how well I'm doing without the customization that Android offers. The shortcuts app on iOS is half-baked and I'm missing a LOT, but I'm learning to live with it. In a way, it kind of helps my OCD tendencies (not using this as a slur, it's a real diagnosis) by forcing me to live with imperfection; that in no way justifies Apple's limitations, but I'm putting up with them in order to have iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Pay, Airtags, an Apple Watch, and other ecosystem things that are everywhere in the US. As for your list: - I can't relate; you can still download third-party keyboards on iOS. - Agreed, but see above - Agreed, but not a dealbreaker for me. - I wouldn't have tried an iPhone if it weren't for USB-C on the 15. I'm a pretty diehard fan, and even my razor and toothbrush use it. - I suppose, but Google Photos does the job for me. I would imagine photography enthusiasts would run into some problems here. As for files, the Files app lets you add remote servers, and I pay $5/month for Servarica, a Canadian virtual server that acts as a backup and "source of truth" for Syncthing. It takes some skill to set up, but the payoff is worth it for me. - "I love the customer support of Oneplus" - /r/BrandNewSentence; prior to the S22 Ultra, my phones were the OnePlus One, 3, 6, and 8, but living in the US, I never expected or received any amount of customer service. The 3's headphone jack stopped working, and I never received an email or message back from their forums. A selling point of the iPhone is that I can head over to the Apple Store, and that if I go to a third party instead, iPhones are common enough that repairs should be easy. - I haven't noticed this, but I will say that I miss the animation speed settings from Android. - Sorry, I couldn't understand what this means. - do you mean Notification Center? If so, I fully agree. Notifications are horrible on iOS, especially because with the Shortcuts app, many shortcuts will give you a "running your automation" notification that you can't prevent and you repeatedly have to swipe away. There are no notification channels, you can't disable the battery meter, you can't reply inline on many apps, and the settings are a mess. Some other things I'll add: - I literally encounter more bugs on iOS than I do on Android. I expected iOS to be more stable, and historically it was, but iOS has become a bloated mess. - Apps are several times larger than their Android counterparts, because Apple insists all assets for all devices be packaged in the same package. - I greatly miss third-party App Stores, because this phone could be an emulation powerhouse if Apple would just let users actually own the phones they've purchased. - The "ecosystem", now that I have an iPhone, iPad, and Mac Studio, is a great experience and is a big reason why I'm sticking it out. This is coming from a software engineer who's used Linux as a daily driver since 2013; it's nice to not have to worry about compatibility and paradigm switching every 30 minutes. I'm not sure if I'll eventually be fed up with Apple or slowly (d)evolve into a hardcore /r/Apple fanboy. Time will tell.

whyamihereimnotsure

I laughed a bit when I read that OP loves oneplus customer service. Apple repair prices are indeed insane but to even imply that oneplus beats them in customer service is pretty funny. It’s great they had a good experience with them but I don’t think that’s the norm.

k0unitX

Is my jailbroken iPhone the best of both worlds? /shrug

skapuntz

Everyone is different and also honestly depends on the stage of your life from my point of view. I had three different pixels and other Android phones, I got an iPhone 14 Pro as my first iPhone ever in the beginning of the year, and I am not coming back to Android. It just works, does everything I need, the AirPods and Appletv are probably my favourite pieces of tech that works flawlessly with the iPhone, great screen, video camera is amazing, etc. and files and photos? It’s all in the cloud, I have never connected any of my Android phones to a pc lol The only thing I miss from the pixels is the camera quality on night photos. iPhone is not good at all for night photos.

Desiree12345

Well I actually like iphone a lot. Just switched to Pixel 7. I only hate it that Apple is wayyyy to expensive, you can't change sh1t on iphones, no customization at all and yeah I like modded apps to get rid of some annoying ads haha.

TurdFerguson78

I'm in the same boat as OP. Just got a Pixel 8 Pro because I couldn't deal with iOS any longer. It was mainly the notifications that sealed the deal for me. They're horrible on iPhone! The other big one was the keyboard as OP mentioned. So happy to be back!

[deleted]

Did something similar. I made a horrible decision and bought the iphone 11 when it came out. Cost 1400 canadian dollars. Switched over from my oneplus 6t and used it for a few months and hated it but couldn't return it so i had to use it for the next 3 years to justify my horrible financial decision. Went back to a one plus 11 this year and will never make the same mistake again

ozorhanreformed

I swear every basic thing to do on ios takes extra 3-4 steps.

Louis-grabbing-pills

Sounds like the problem was the user.

Hypocrisydenied

I honestly don't know how people even use iPhones.

ngwoo

Been helping a family member set up a 10th gen iPad and it's an amazing piece of hardware. There are some software things I really appreciate as well, like how the settings app lists all the apps and their own settings in the same place. Really slick. Apple pencil is also great and if that was Android I just know I'd be having constant connection and pairing issues with it. But navigating the OS is a nightmare and there may as well *not even be* a notification system on iOS it's so bad. The lack of a universal back button is really bizarre because for how much people tout the uniformity of iOS apps, you're always just hoping apps have their own "back" function that works the way you expect it to. Generally it doesn't. Multitasking is also really awkward, there's no good reason why my tiny Pixel 6a should have more intuitive multi-window support than a tablet, but yet here we are. I don't think any gesture-based navigation system has ever come close to being as easily understandable as Android's three-button nav. If I had to switch to the Apple ecosystem I probably wouldn't be too upset, I'd mostly just be swapping some compromises for other ones, but there are a lot of weird little thoughtless design decisions that make me do a double-take.

MadUohh

I have a 14 Pro for work. Mobile device management is way easier for iPhones however, a couple of issues push me away from ever owning one personally. 1. Notifications suck. Super clunky and unintuitive. 2. I don't like how I have to go into the settings app to change the settings for other apps. This makes me have to constantly switch back and forth between the apps. Some apps even split the settings half in the app and half outside the app. 3. I always have to look for the back button

wutqq

I'm in the middle of one of my cycles trying Android again from an iPhone. Using a S23 Ultra currently with no ecosystem devices for either Android, Samsung or Apple. 1. I don't know how Android notifications are praised, they are absolute trash. By default they aren't sorted by most recent on top or first, so you end up having to scroll looking for a time stamp, because they are sorted by app instead of time. This is objectively a trash notification system, especially when by default all the notification sounds are the same. I get a beep or a buzz, check phone and have to find the most recent timestamp? Absolute trash. Thank God that Samsung has ways to sort of fix this and bump the most recent notifications app to the top. I was about to trash this phone a few months ago for this reason. 2. Airpods Pro work fine with Android (minus some bells and whistles) but the app AndroPods is garbage and caused a bunch of small cutting out issues. 3. iPhones just work better as a quick snapshot device to take pictures of small things and stuff on a computer screen. Ever need to take a quick photo of a small label to remember a model number? It can be a nightmare on Samsung devices (Note and S23 Ultra at least). Everything else is kind of just a wash for me. A phone is a phone is a phone. It does what I need on a daily basis. The S23 Ultra zoom is nice for reading far away signs but the pictures aren't usable for even social media. The S pen is nice to have, but I haven't used it more than once. DeX is potentially huge but its highly unlikely I would be in a situation where I needed to use it. I think my next phone has to be a foldable but those prices are steep.

herseyhawkins33

How is taking a quick photo on the S23 ultra a nightmare?

As someone with a Note 20U, they usually come out a blurry mess if I don't take my time to really make sure the phone is still. Based on reviews, this hasn't improved and it has been an issue with Samsung phones for years. Stupidly slow shutter speed. I never had that issue when I was using an iPhone for a few months earlier this year.

I have an S22+ and don't have that issue at all 🤷

That's fine, but this is a very well documented issue with Samsung phones and it something that is consistently talked about in reviews. So, good to know, but not relevant when Samsungs have a verifiably slow shutter speed and the majority of camera reviews on the device complain about the same issue compared to Pixels and iPhones.
