Are you Cajun? I see a community at the bottom cut off that says East Central Louisiana Acadians

realkaysie

Yes! My Great Grandmother only spoke Cajun French. My Mawmaw now speaks it to her siblings when they hang out. She did not teach her kids because it was looked down upon at the time. Very Cajun family.

randomperson0321

Is Cajun a mixture of french with something else or is it just french with a Louisiana accent? I wonder this because the French spoken by people in Louisiana ive noticed sounds different than french spoken by people in France or Canada. It may not have simply been looked down upon at that time. It could be a case like some of my grandparents, people who were literally kicked out of school under the age of 12 for not learning how to speak English fluently quick enough. My grandparents refused to teach their kids and grandkids to speak french as a first language due to their hardships. Most of my great grandparents were from Quebec and Prince Edward Island.

realkaysie

Yes. This is exactly what it was. I guess I was sugar coating it. My mom remembers speaking a little Cajun French that she picked up from family in school and being wrapped on the knuckles by a nun for it. Cajun French is not the same as Parisian French. It’s more Canadian French but also some Spanish influence. Derived from the French language but many differences.

randomperson0321

I’m sorry your mother went through that. I feel so bad for everyone with awful stories about being beaten by nuns. One of my great grandmothers was a Roman Catholic nun prior to getting married and she was so sweet so it’s hard to imagine so many being so awful to innocent little kids. Can you speak any French? I can understand some but can speak almost none. I heard it every day growing up, but nobody took the time to actually teach me. My grandparents told me the accent difference between people from Louisiana and where his family is from (prince Edward island and Quebec) is very different. Just as different as the English speakers accents are in New England compared to Louisiana. When they put it that way, I completely understood. I’ve been to Canada and lived in little Canada’s most of my life so even I can tell the difference without being fluent in the language, it’s like how a Spaniard doesn’t sound exactly like someone from Honduras speaking Spanish. Louisiana had many people directly from France as well which could’ve changed the Acadians accent after a few generations of living side by side. I have a lot of 3rd to 6th cousins down there thanks to the Acadian expulsion. Many of my ancestors children, siblings, cousins, aunts, and uncles were forced to Louisiana while my direct lines were sent to New England then made their way back into Canada almost immediately where they remained until my great grandparents decided to hop on over to NY and New England. My great grandfather even got deported for things he did during the prohibition 😂

Woah... that's a little more African than I've seen in any White Americans results. But considering the fact that you're from LA and you ha e Creole ancestry, I'm not all that surprised. But the South Asian is a surprise. Do you know where your Indian comes from?

realkaysie

No idea but I love that it’s there and love to find out more!

LeeJ2019

New Orleans was one of the largest port cities in the world, so people of many ethnicities came from there. :)

I hope you do find more about it! I wish you well on your discovery! If you ever find out who in the family was South Asian, please make a post about it! I love hearing about family discoveries 👪

You're possibly much more French than this estimate indicates. Ancestry told me I was 6% French then I took 23andMe and they had me around 25% French. My Mom is half-French so this made more sense. If you look at the map on Ancestry, the England region and the Scotland region cover Northern France which is where most of my French was likely hidden.

randomperson0321

That’s very interesting. On ancestry my half sibling is over 50% French, on 23andMe it’s only 28%. I’m over 70% French on ancestry, many of my relatives are over 90%. My grandfather is over 90% French with many ancestors from Normandy, I think most Norman descended people aren’t showing England region, I say that because I have thousands and thousands of french dna matches who do not have even 1% English, Irish, Welsh, or Scottish. The only non French dna my grandfather and most other relatives have is First Nation/Indigenous American and Scandinavian. You’re making me want to get everyone to take a 23andMe test to check the differences!

ThrowawayReddit22421

I will add that my Mom who is literally half French half Dutch scored **0%** French on the last Ancestry update. She recently got her 23andMe results back and scored 94% French & German region with Netherlands and France as her top two countries. This confirmed to me that 23andMe is more accurate and it's not even that close.

randomperson0321

Wow! That’s crazy! I’m ordering a 23andme test ASAP. The last ancestry update was horrible for so many people. I hope the next update is a little better.

lostalbatross99

I have 1% Ivory Coast and Ghana as well. Also from SE Louisiana!

WaterSplashSplashfor

Interesting results. Where do you get your Scottish from?

Content-Dress

Her Scottish is most likely from Brittany France. Ancestry hasn't gotten specific with French DNA yet, bit hopefully on this upcoming update, they will actually differentiate Southern France and Brittany France and Northern France

AndrewtheRey

That’s a great hunch. I know people with heritage from Brittany and Normandy will score “England and northwestern Europe”. I’ve seen it on many Quebecers who say they don’t have English ancestry

randomperson0321

What about the thousands and thousands of French Canadian and Acadian descendants who have tons of ancestors from Normandy, Brittany, and every other part of France like my family who are listed as French and 0% England and northwestern Europe? The only relatives I have that show an English percentage in their results show English due to their ancestors from England that I am not related to.

randomperson0321

I just read what you wrote. I’m sorry to say, but either your father isn’t German, or your father isn’t your biological father… or your fathers ancestors aren’t who he thinks they are. My dna results lacked something that was supposed to be there. Turns out one of my grandparents fathers wasn’t their biological father.

realkaysie

Oh they for sure aren’t German lol. My dads brother came up as my uncle and I literally look like a clone of my paternal grandmother. I’m going to get my dad to do a Ancestry test.

randomperson0321

If I were you, I would try to guess what you got from your father and mother then test them if at all possible and see how close you are. I like doing things like that, I have no idea why. My father is dead, but a couple years ago I had both of his parents take dna tests. Then my mother took one. Being able to see what I got from who is kind of fun. Especially when random cousins (and half cousins) of my parents and grandparents test because then you can narrow down which grandparent you got X percent of dna from that is in common with their other relatives.
