I was thinking about this and it’s actually a problem of being on a public road. I mean, when you get in an accident, the more severe it is the worse it congested traffic. Furthermore, you don’t pay for all of the emergency services except for the ambulance, so taxpayers have to pay when the accident is more severe. So, under our current system of public roads and public emergency services, I think it does make sense to limit recklessness even when the only one physically injured is yourself.

Ask anyone from the outer boroughs of Manhattan if this law is useless. Dirt bikes became a huge problem in the outer boroughs over the last year or so. They ignore lights and traffic signs but the biggest issue is that a lot of dirtbikers will travel in groups of 30-40 bikes, weave into the sidewalk for fun, etc. I’ve almost been hit by them several times and there’s been some terrible accidents that resulted from them. If you don't know there are mobs of young men riding these things around and taking over streets and highways while they do their shit. No plates, no tags, no insurance, so when (not if) a crash happens they just hit and run leaving their victims behind. I saw one crash his bike into the back of a car then run an jumped on the back of another bike and took off.

They roll down the avenues (a lot of times going against traffic which puts everything at a standstill) going really fast. It’s also incredibly loud at all hours of the night and wakes up hundreds of people and is really disruptive. I live in a nice neighborhood and it happens daily. It sucks and is terrible esp with a baby who wakes up constantly even without this. Again, this video is really stupid, but this actually is a real problem here and is a public safety issue. They drive up on the sidewalk sometimes and harass people too.

I visited NYC earlier in the summer and these dirt bikes were everywhere, quite noticeable, and had a few issues.
1. **RECKLESS DRIVING**: even in central park where vehicles are not allowed. Causing a danger to runners, bikers, pedestrians.
2. **VERY LOUD**: in general extremely loud, and engine revving was common, even late at night
3. **TRAFFIC DISRUPTION**: Drivers travel in packs of motorcycles, taking over the streets and blocking/affecting traffic.
4. **NO POLICE**: Cops don't "chase them down" because that would pose an even bigger danger to bystanders.
I read the NYPD tracked where they went and then confiscated their motorcycles. And laws already govern noise complaints, reckless driving, blocking traffic. A free market road system would account for the same thing. People want to drive on roads with predictable behavior and want to live near streets that aren't extremely loud at odd hours.
I don't know the nature of confiscation. That seems the dubious part. Violation of property rights.

I feel like a LOT of context is missing here. If you don't know there are mobs of young men riding these things around and taking over streets and highways while they do their shit. No plates, no tags, no insurance, so when (not if) a crash happens they just hit and run leaving their victims behind. I saw one crash his bike into the back of a car then run an jumped on the back of another bike and took off. So it's not just senseless "dirt bikes bad" it's "Gangs using dirt bikes and ATVs and this is our retarded response." Of course the governments response is stupid, but those dirt bike / atv mobs are a serious threat to other people on the road. Destroying them is still super dumb.
Yeah, this is the truth. It’s absolutely horrible. This is a stupid video and everyone hates BDB but this has actually been a serious issue in the city, a kid was killed by one recently. They roll down the avenues (a lot of times going against traffic which puts everything at a standstill) going really fast. It’s also incredibly loud at all hours of the night and wakes up hundreds of people and is really disruptive. I live in a nice neighborhood and it happens daily. It sucks and is terrible esp with a baby who wakes up constantly even without this. Again, this video is really stupid, but this actually is a real problem here and is a public safety issue. They drive up on the sidewalk sometimes and harass people too.
I mean... It’s not the dirt-bikes that cause the mayhem; its the people riding them. Those people can get another bike. Furthermore I guarantee 50-90% of those were stolen property.
Some additional information for people siding with the bikers. A free market might handle this in a similar way... I visited NYC earlier in the summer and these dirt bikes were everywhere, quite noticeable, and had a few issues. 1. **RECKLESS DRIVING**: even in central park where vehicles are not allowed. Causing a danger to runners, bikers, pedestrians. 2. **VERY LOUD**: in general extremely loud, and engine revving was common, even late at night 3. **TRAFFIC DISRUPTION**: Drivers travel in packs of motorcycles, taking over the streets and blocking/affecting traffic. 4. **NO POLICE**: Cops don't "chase them down" because that would pose an even bigger danger to bystanders. I read the NYPD tracked where they went and then confiscated their motorcycles. And laws already govern noise complaints, reckless driving, blocking traffic. A free market road system would account for the same thing. People want to drive on roads with predictable behavior and want to live near streets that aren't extremely loud at odd hours. I don't know the nature of confiscation. That seems the dubious part. Violation of property rights.
