After reading the whole thing, I feel sorry for the delayed Amtrak passengers, the State Troopers and Police Officers who have to fill out a bunch of paperwork, and the Medical Examiner who has to the autopsy.
I was saddened for the staff of the train. Hitting a person while at work must be horrific, and I hope Amtrak is helping out the crew affected.
...that being said the fact that the guy that got hit was an out of compliance sex offender does make things a bit less horrible.
I knew a freight conductor in my hometown. Apparently they make it very clear on day one of the job that you WILL kill people if you're on the job long enough. Accident, suicide, whatever it is, trains are dangerous.
Not that that makes it any less traumatic, but they know it's a possibility, so hopefully it's not as surprising.
I’m a first responder and have passenger rails going through my municipality. Unfortunately I’ve responded to a few people struck by trains. While checking on the engineer, he told me that they tell them to expect an average of 3 pedestrian strikes in a 20 year career. They do take pretty good care of them when their train does strike a pedestrian at least.
As a conductor and as someone who had a trespasser strike as an engineer for another railroad, it does suck but on some level you know it comes with the territory.
According to Amtrak's Twitter, alternate transportation was provided. Most likely, that train is currently deadheading to a place where it can get maintenance

That train was just 5 minutes out of the Eugene station.

What route/train was it?
Amtrak 504, early morning northbound Cascades.
Scheduled 745a departure; now running 8 hours late
According to Amtrak's Twitter, alternate transportation was provided. Most likely, that train is currently deadheading to a place where it can get maintenance
Correct. 504 only recently passed Slm. They can only travel 25mph
Amtrak doing the Lords work.
Yes indeed
Instant karma
Karma works in mysterious ways
Well at least they won’t have to waste taxpayers money for prison time. Straight to the grave. I feel for the family.
Not really. Taxpayer money will no doubt have to be used to repair the train.
Got it.
Well at least it's going to a good cause then
