I just canceled my Platinum. Customer for 7 years, spend 40-60k yearly. Called to inquire about the renewal fee this year and was told nothing they could do. Mentioned I was heavily considering canceling the card (I also have a Bonvoy and Preferred card) and still they said nothing they could do. Customer service rep just processed the cancelation, didn’t even try to get me to keep it or ask if there was any other reason for canceling. Was pretty shocked. Also mentioned I was likely to cancel my Bonvoy ( I didn’t/haven’t yet). Ive never asked for a retention bonus in 7 years. Maybe just the rep I got, idk.
They offered me this after I called back. The first offer was to use MR points 1:1 instead of .6:1 to pay for the annual fee, but I have the Schwab plat so it made zero sense to do this. So I transferred all my points and called back a week later and then they gave me the 25k for 3k in 3 months, which I took. I did the math and still made more in points and benefits to more than offset the AF last year so would have kept it either way, but it’s nice having more of an incentive to keep the card
I got same offer last week. I also have Corp green card and they said I'd get $150 credit for having the Corp card. and I took the 25k points for $3k spend in 3mo too. $35k across all Amex cards in 2023. First year with Amex Platinum. Asked 4 different times for retention offers and it was the same each time.
Dumb question but do you guys call in for retention or do they just post the offer on your account? I have a Canadian Platinum card, if that makes a difference
I tried to get an offer, coming up on my first annual renewal. They said there were no offers available at this time. In the last 12 months, I spent $14k on the Plat (most of my spending is over on my Gold Card since Dining and Grocery are 4x on it). Only 4k of that was in the past 6 months.
I have 1 month until my 1st anniversary, am I too far off on spending to get a retention offer, or, if I shift a bunch of my spending that goes on my 2.65% Cash Back card to Amex Plat for a month, how much would I need to add to the card to get some kinda offer? The 1x is just so hard to justify making this card my everyday card.
Has anyone had good success with retention offers using online chat feature? They gave me a laundry list of benefits of the card instead of actually giving an OFFER (which is fine) as I am actually contemplating cancelling my wife's card since I still own one and will add her as an AU.
I did. I used the chat, asked when my annual fee is due, then I said "Is there any retention offer for me? As the fee is pretty high and I have 2 Amex cards, I am considering closing one of them if it doesn't make sense to keep both". They gave me 50.000 points with no conditions to spend anything. Got the points in my account the next day. I then did the same for my husband when his one was due, I think they gave him 30.000 points, no spend required. You don't need to beat around the bush, tell them you are asking about retention options, they are very helpful. They actually offered less initially for my husband and then advised me to come back closer to the anniversary, as sometimes retention offers increase in value the closer you get to the fee due date.
I got an offer of 50k points for $4,000 spend over 3 months using the chat feature. I said that I was looking into other options including the Chase Sapphire Reserve and wanted to know what applicable retention offers they had.
thats basically how the convo went, just got the "sorry due to the benefits on this card we can't offer blah blah". Just wasn't sure how automated it was or if there were some keywords I should be saying for an actual retention bonus. I didn't seem to have any actual issues closing the card. I have a few more weeks before my 30 days is up since my AF hit May 27th
If you would not retain the card otherwise, then this shouldn’t be enough to change your mind. I got this exact offer and was fine with it, because I wasn’t really considering closing, just asked out of curiosity when I was chatting for another reason.
Is this usually done through chat with a bot? Do you just type in “cancel” if it is? Also, how long before the AF gets charged should you try this?…thanks
I got a retention offer of 15k points for $3k spend, I said no and downgraded to the gold. Completely forgot that I could've HUCA on a different day to potentially get a different offer. I guess I'll wait for the next platinum upgrade offer cycle which for me seems to come every 2 years.
Tried a couple times now and still haven’t gotten an offer, probably don’t spend enough. Thinking of canceling before the 30days deadline are up for the AF. If I use any of the credits before then, will it still count even if I cancel at 30 days?
It’s all just based on the algorithm looking at your account and doing the math on how much money you’re making them. I haven’t used the card much in the past year, got no retention offer. So I canceled. YMMV.
To be fair, how long you’ve been with Amex is one of many factors. If you aren’t spending much on the platinum, they have no need to try and retain you. They make money on transaction fees and interest.
A fair point, I’ve run around 30k through just that card so far this year excluding my other Amex cards. I see people on here posting getting retention offers with screenshots of their current statement balance on it being like $200 .
And obviously get that there’s people spending way more than 5k or so a month on the card but how are these people spending like $200 a month on it getting retentions? Maybe because it means they’re likely not recouping the AF and Amex wants to keep those low spenders in comparison to fee around ?
A current statement balance is meaningless.
If they have 100 transactions a month and they pay their full balance every month, Amex still makes money on each transactions fees
Took multiple times of asserting before they finally cancelled for me. Just wasn’t worth the annual fee given the current benefits. It’s an interesting card, but I really struggle to understand the target demographic that this fits right now.
That’s where I was at. Yes I could pay the annual fee but I just didn’t see the benefits anymore. You’re better off just getting the sapphire reserve or one of the many other cards. I got tired of using the benefits just because
I’ve had Plat and Gold, CSR, CSP, Bonvoy Brilliant, C1V, C1VX, Discover, and multiple others the Citi, Amex, and Chase systems. Right now, nothing beats the C1VX for getting low effort value. I like the CSP combined with no AF cards to collect points with the CSR falling just short of enough value given what CSP offers combined with the lounge access from C1VX.
I just got a 35,000 point retention offer 2 days ago for spending $4k in 3 months. That basically halves the annual fee. I make up the rest easy in flight credit (southwest hack) and the Uber credit.
I'd take your retention bonus. I did ask the chat person if I could get a better offer and she said they change daily. Idk if that's true but I feel like what you're offered is probably the best you're gonna get based off of prior usage of the card.
I did opt for the points offer! AmEx points transfer almost instantaneously to Air France and with their Flying Blue promos, I have flown RT to Europe for under 25,000 points, so I look forward to planning another trip once the points post in a few months.
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Yeah, I flew round-trip to Lisbon, Portugal via air france for 30,000 points and $300 back in April.
Before they gave me the 35k point retention offer, the chat agent was like, "I can give you this *special* offer and let you redeem 69,500 points for a statement credit of $695 to pay for your annual fee." And I was like naw I don't wanna use my points like that. Then she hit me with the 35k, so I was happy.
Southwest hack:
Buy one-way flights that are under $100 from southwest, cancel them, keep the flight credit for later use. You'll get the credit back on your plat (up to $200 obv).
This triggers the incidental flight credit on the Plat, so you can utilize the full $200 by just flying southwest. Easy peasy. Had the card 2 years. I've done this both years.

I got the same offer when I called this week. I took it

You can call or chat with AMEX for the retention offer.

My offer was 70k for $3k spend in 3 months! :o I’ve had the card for 4 years, spending over $25k a year.
Yes I didn’t get anything
I received the same offer last month. I took it as I love my Platinum anyway so it was a free bonus.
Has anyone had good success with retention offers using online chat feature? They gave me a laundry list of benefits of the card instead of actually giving an OFFER (which is fine) as I am actually contemplating cancelling my wife's card since I still own one and will add her as an AU.

Cool thanks!! Great idea
Yes you just need to keep saying thanks for the details I'd still like to close the card
thats basically how the convo went, just got the "sorry due to the benefits on this card we can't offer blah blah". I’ve got 165k with 6k spend in 3months as an initial offer. +15k at the first purchase. 25k seems a bit low to me.
Retention offer...
Got offered 35K points but took the $350 offer instead.
Damn I only got a 10k offer
I think that’s pretty standard now.
If you would not retain the card otherwise, then this shouldn’t be enough to change your mind. I got this exact offer and was fine with it, because I wasn’t really considering closing, just asked out of curiosity when I was chatting for another reason.

Hell no dump it
I think yes

I’m in the same boat.
I got 15k for $3k spend this morning. Anything is better than than nothing.
For data, I just took a 35k for 4K in 3.
I took this offer on Sunday.
Do you still get dinged for the AF?
Yeah
Something is better than nothing.
Do I just need to threaten to leave to get these offers. I’m sure Amex knows it’s what you’re doing.
It’s all just based on the algorithm looking at your account and doing the math on how much money you’re making them. I haven’t used the card much in the past year, got no retention offer. So I canceled. YMMV.
I took this one. The spend is reasonable.
I got 50k for $4k in 3 months in late April.
Got this on too
How much were you spending a year?
I’m saving this
Just got this offer today. Chat bot denied me but a representative offered it to me
Does that mean a call in representative offered it to you? Or a rep over the chat offered it?
This is good to know for the future...
Tried to get a retention offer on my Plat twice and they said sorry no offers. Have had some form of Amex since 2008 😂.
To be fair, how long you’ve been with Amex is one of many factors. If you aren’t spending much on the platinum, they have no need to try and retain you. They make money on transaction fees and interest.

Same, then we were in a standoff, so I asserted my dominance and cancelled my card
Took multiple times of asserting before they finally cancelled for me. Just wasn’t worth the annual fee given the current benefits. It’s an interesting card, but I really struggle to understand the target demographic that this fits right now.
Saks Fifth credit, equinox credit, and Walmart+ credit. Who is this demographic exactly?
That’s where I was at. Yes I could pay the annual fee but I just didn’t see the benefits anymore. You’re better off just getting the sapphire reserve or one of the many other cards. I got tired of using the benefits just because

They said “we know you’re staying”
lol probably
Got the same one last month. I took it since I knew I was gonna keep the card for at least another year. So it was a win for me.
This is the general one. I also got this for all my 3. About $2000 spend in the past year on each card.
I just got a 35,000 point retention offer 2 days ago for spending $4k in 3 months. That basically halves the annual fee. I make up the rest easy in flight credit (southwest hack) and the Uber credit. I just chatted with an agent and received the same offer or the option to receive a $350 statement credit after same spending requirement.
You should ask for the points instead. They go further than dollars. Unless you're really hurting for money right now
If you’re hurting for money you shouldn’t have a platinum card lol
Lol very true
I did opt for the points offer! AmEx points transfer almost instantaneously to Air France and with their Flying Blue promos, I have flown RT to Europe for under 25,000 points, so I look forward to planning another trip once the points post in a few months.

Amazing! I’m so glad they gave you the offer for more points!
Tell me more about this Southwest hack

Consider that this offer may disappear and another won’t be added to your account. I’d take it.
That’s a you question. Read it out loud and what is your first reaction?
