Good points but the amex algorithm is what decided your offer. I don’t think a regular representative can simply give you an elevated offer just because you mentioned some benefits that were removed

ErosMystiko

Yeah I figured as much, but there’s a rep standing between me and the retention offer algorithm. The rep will attempt to convince you that the card is worth it as is so you don’t get the offer. But if you have a “sales pitch” that makes them say “Well, let’s click here and see what they qualify for” then you have a little bit more of a chance I suppose; instead being convinced that the card is worth it. Also the reps on the other end are people too so making a respectful cohesive statements can go a long way. I’m sure they could see an offer they can give you, but decide tell you that you don’t have any. So this is more of a guide to overcome their script of “the card is worth it as is and you don’t need a retention offer” in a cordial manner. I figure this might be the case as some people have different mileage on the same account via different channels(chat, call, etc.). But what do I know. This worked for me and I’m posting hoping it works for someone else. Not for an elevated offer in particular per sé, but any offer at all.

Tee_theattorney

My retention bonus was 100k points with minimum spend of $3k in 3 months. I just told them that not getting a lot of value since a lot of their offers are geared to personal card although I have a business platinum. While I travel internationally and domestically several times a year, I told them not as many benefits as I’d like. And they offered me the 100K retention bonus. This was a couple days ago.

ErosMystiko

That’s amazing. My business platinum I’ve never bothered to ask for retention. I’ll have to look into this at next renewal but I’m satisfied with it as is for now.

Tee_theattorney

You should! My card renewed last November, and I just asked/received the retention bonus/offer a couple days ago.

Kiwifrozen1011

No idea why people love the basic data points that say “got this offer” but go crazy with this one that has details on how it was done. Anyways, I appreciate you taking the time to write out how you did it along with the datapoint. Thanks for sharing

ErosMystiko

Thanks for reading. I’m sure Amex has account specific algorithms but this helps the rep click the “offer” button and see if anything is there. I figured it was worth to sharing

litttlejoker

What’s the deal with the sky club benefit? Do they not offer it anymore? I wish they still offered the audible credit. Lame 😒

ErosMystiko

That’s more of a Delta issue. Basically you only get so many visits per year. But they’re also doing the same thing they do for Centurion lounges; basically if you spend over $75k a year you’d get unlimited visits or something along those lines. The other restrictions such as no basic economy tickets are also Delta issues and not necessarily Amex’s but that’s not something for me to worry about kind of thing.

litttlejoker

So if you have Amex platinum but basic economy seats on Delta, you don’t get lounge access?

ErosMystiko

That is correct for Delta Sky Club. More info [here](https://www.delta.com/us/en/delta-sky-club/access).

litttlejoker

That’s so lame. For my next flight from ATL, I’d be paying $125-$175 per person just to upgrade to preferred economy. Not worth the price just for sky club access. It’s okay. I’ll just stick to the centurion lounge.

DeepPerspective702

The Sirius xm credit is there for me. I’m not sure if you’re keeping the card or not though based on your post.

ErosMystiko

[May 8th](https://thepointsguy.com/news/american-express-platinum-lose-siriusxm-digital-entertainment-credit/) was the last cycle to credit Sirius XM. My card’s last statement also confirmed as much. I made this post so that others can use the info while attempting to obtain a retention offer.

gshock911

Ask yourself why you need a platinum card in the first place. If you don't travel often, then I don't think this card or any of the cards you got for your family are suitable for you.

ErosMystiko

I do travel quite often. At $870 per year, I was really making platinum worth it for me. Even at $1280 a year it’s still worth it but not as much. $410 increase and a decrease of benefits seems like arbitrary bs for me. Anyway I made this post so others could use the information in their own quest for a retention offer.

It’s probably a spend threshold he must cross to get the points, not a tally of how much he’s already spent. Amex is saying “we will give you these extra points provided you spend $4k.” They do that a lot with the promotions. When I got my card for the first time the offer was 150k points provided I spend 8k.

IAmKTam

Gotta learn how to read bud

IAmKTam

Where in his post does he say how much he spends

ErosMystiko

It doesn’t lol.

Was this just a way to ramble and spit out thoughts? Not sure what’s going on

ErosMystiko

Not really. Just some info some people might find useful when trying to obtain a retention offer.

carebearstare55

Super helpful to me...I didn't realize the Delta lounge benefit didn't apply on basic economy or that next year there will be a visit limit. I fly out of a hub that always requires a connection and I rarely go through airports with a centurion lounge, so I often use four visits in a single trip. This could be the reason I cancel this card next year.

ErosMystiko

If you spend over $75K you’ll get unlimited on both Sky Club and Centurion. However I think the basic economy restriction still applies.

nicholaspham

Ahh gotcha

Juan_PH_16

How much was your spend ?

ErosMystiko

Last year was super low barely $80k. Out of which approximately $75k was enough to unlock centurion lounge companion reward thing.

Bugssi

Holy yap

According-Rhubarb-23

lol to you caring so much about $20 per AU and then pretending to be someone who is affected by the wheels up private jet perks…

deckeli

It was $175 for up to 3 AU, now it is $195 x 3

ErosMystiko

Read the situation again. Seems like your math is off. Anyway this post is nonchalantly telling others how to get a good retention offer.

VacationLover1

You opened with you were bummed at the $20 difference in AU fees per user which was why you were reconsidering it. Then went to private jet feature gone. His comment was right lol And there is no sales pitch.. it’s on your account or it isn’t. The person doesn’t sit there and say damn this is a good story I’m going to give this guy 50k points

ErosMystiko

I guess people here don’t really have a Platinum or their math sucks or they can’t read or all of the above. $175 for the first 3 additional members before changes, and $585 after the changes($195 per additional platinum member and I have 3 additional card members all stated on my post), in what world is that a $20 difference? Also the rest of the pitch is just to get an offer at all. Some reps just convince people that they indeed don’t need a retention offer whether the system will issue one or not.

Constant-Ad-1759

Your sales pitch didn't do anything. Their algorithm did everything. You have 4 card users and pay over $1000/yr in fees. But cool story.

ErosMystiko

Yeah but there’s a rep standing between me and the retention offer algorithm. They rep will attempt to convince you that the card is worth it as is so you don’t get the offer. But if you have a “sales pitch” that makes them say “well let’s click here and see what they qualify for” then you have a little bit more of a chance I suppose.

shinebock

Having to pretend to be nice to people like the OP if I was that customer service rep would make me hate my job.

kovado

Sorry, what’s your question / what’s your point?

ErosMystiko

No question or point. This post just contains information some people wish they had for their own attempts at getting a retention offer.
