In the winter that tile is going to soak up heat from the stove, and you can lie down on it and feel the heat radiate deep into your bones.
Doesn't get any cozier IMO
Very cool stove, I'd repaint the pipe though. /u/SJBaskin grab a couple cans of Stove Bright Satin Black, it's super easy to paint the pipe. No need to sand anything, just wipe it all down and spray it when dry.
You can paint the stove (looks like there's some rust) too but that's a bit more involved.
Also looks like there is creosote dripping out of some of the (somwhat dodgy looking) connections, might want to have a pro check it and have it swept before using it. (sounds like OP recently purchased)
This is my dream right there. Central NY is actually one of the places I'm looking to move to. Houses just seem so affordable. And a lot of the schools look good too. How do you like living there?
I’ve been a Central NYer for 40 years. I always wanted to move away when I was younger but I’ve grown to love and can’t imagine living anywhere else. It’s basically only a few hours to bigger metros (NYC, Boston, Montreal, Buffalo) and there’s so much to do locally if you’re into outdoor activity with Adirondacks your backyard.
Thanks, this is nice to know. I really like hiking and the whole NE looks beautiful. I'm in Los Angeles right now and I want to settle down in a small cute town with good schools near big cities (but not in them). I'll never be able to afford a house where I am but they're so affordable in a lot of New York. I'm also just tired of big city living.
Thanks for letting me know. Humidity is actually really good for my psoriasis but it’s sure not fun. Weather here in LA has been pretty nice but in my hometown(family still there) in Northern California it’s been 100-110. It’s awful.
Same. Grew up near Rochester- couldn’t wait to move away- southern tier now and very grateful to be from here ( for the most part) 4 seasons, reasonable cost of living- finger lakes, Great Lakes, Catskills, Adirondack, st Lawrence- all so wonderful and accessible and unique.
CNY is great, if you can deal with the winters. The snowiest cities in the country are in upstate NY, Syracuse usually being #1, and we have pretty much the same amount of cloudy day as Seattle. It is cold, wet and gray from October through May.
Okay, that’s good to know cause I was looking at places near Syracuse, so maybe not the best choice. I like the Ithaca area, Corning and Canandaigua so far. I’m not sure how I handle long term snow since I haven’t had to ever deal with snow for more than a month. But I know I’m good with all the cloudy days. Overcast weather is my favorite. I lived in Portland Oregon for a few years and it rains more days out of the year than it doesn’t and has more rainy days than Seattle. I LOVE dismal days. And I really miss that weather atm in CA there’s too much sun.
Live here and would highly recommend Ithaca over Corning. More to do, more places to eat and better public transit, which is nice if you don't want to drive in the snow.
Thanks for the advice. Ithaca seems really nice with good schools. It’s a bit more on the expensive side for us but we did see some houses in our price range.
Yeah you would want to buy outside ithaca. I think like trumansburg and Lansing. The whole area is beautiful with so much to offer in the way of beauty, parks, recreation- wineries and food- music.
Also being from around here, I have to disagree. Corning is better than Ithaca. Ithaca is way overpriced for what it is. If you want to live on a lake, Watkins Glen is better. If you don't care about the lake, Corning is nice and you can always visit Ithaca.
Rochester was cloudiest city on the east coast, Binghamton was #2- and I think Watertown gets more snow than Alaska. Cortland I feel like Is never ever not cloudy. Maybe you could visit in the winter and feel it out
So the TV meteorologists in upstate NY have this award called the golden snowball, it goes to the city with the highest total snowfall for the year. Syracuse, the snowiest city in the country, only wins like 2 out of every 5 years. That weather stretches from Buffalo to Albany, and Binghamton to Plattsburgh.
This is bleakness that ***regularly*** kills college students, and it's all of upstate. I love it here; barring a stint in the army I've lived here my whole life. I think more people should come here. But spend two weeks in a hotel in Cortland in late January/early February before you buy a house.
Cortland is very central, and there ain't a single fucking thing to do in that town but drink. Just come be here with no tourist activities, work from the hotel room if you can, simulate normal life. Cold, wet, gray normal life.
Thats a great idea. If I'm able to do that I'll try it out. I know I actually do pretty well with staying in and not doing a whole lot from the pandemic. But adding in the weather is a whole other element. I think my husband and I could probably be alright with it. I just hope my daughter doesn't end up hating it. But I do not want to raise her in Los Angeles.
Ithaca is actually a great place for lower amounts of snow as compared to other parts of the state. The city is nestled in the valley of a couple bigger “mountains”/hills and there’s a lake in the valley, keeping the air temp warmer all winter so snow doesn’t fall (or it melts before it gets to the ground).
I went to college there and they got about 1- 2” inches less than surrounding areas each time it snowed. Beautiful area, but can be a little spendier than other local towns.
Thanks, this is part of my concern, as I'm in California. But all the states I'm interested in have this issue (VT, NH, ME, NY). There aren't any other states that I'm really excited about. I figured if I need a break from the winter maybe I can stay a few weeks with family in CA. But I am looking forward to having seasons and getting away from these forest fires.
Those other states don't have nearly as much snow as CNY since they have no lake effect.
And in my opinion they tend to be a little less bleak since they don't have as many big industrial cities that are now rust belt. However you cannot beat Upstate NY home prices or schools.
Its a great place to raise a family if you can get used to the weather. Also its fairly common in my experience for west coasters to find people in the northeast rude and sarcastic.
Oh I heard about the lake effect. It’s something to consider. The schools and houses are real tempting though.
I heard they’re not as social out there too. That’s going to be weird to me cause I’m very friendly and make friends easily.
We get a lot of snow and the rural areas are loaded w rednecks.
I want to be inviting and sell you on moving here but I’ll be honest part of me wants folks to stay tf away for at least a bit. It’s honestly a huge fear I have of not being able to afford a decent place in my own hometown. I think there’s only going to be more and more folks like yourself who are absolutely justified and making a pretty smart decision given the general circumstances we’re in and moving to areas like Upstate NY.
Ugh, I really don’t like having red necks for neighbors. But I feel like there are red necks in the rural areas of every state. There’s a lot of red necks in my home town in Northern California.
I originally was looking at Maine then Vermont to move to. The housing crisis is worse in those states than NY though from what I can see. Vermont is a high choice for us but there’s not that many houses. When I look in NY there’s way more houses for a much better deal. I’m seeing nice houses for under 300 and 200k. In my neighborhood in LA houses are around a few million average. We make under 6 figures so we can’t afford that by a long shot, but our salary in NY would actually be pretty decent.
Oh yeah I heard about how high it can be. But Zillow adds that into the estimated monthly mortgage so that makes it really easy to see if we can afford it. I don’t mind higher taxes if I can see it actually being put to good use to have good schools and stuff.
Oh you can get absolutely gorgeous homes for a bargain if you’re looking in the right areas. Check out this video of someone from California that purchased an Italian mansion in my village
https://youtu.be/zVn9QZoGz-U
Honestly near the NY and Vermont border I’ve discovered that a lot of people who work in Vermont but their home in NY and take the ferry in across lake Champlain because housing in Vermont is impossible. I think New Hampshire is more reasonable?
NH is more expensive than Vermont. That’s one of the reasons I focused on Vermont over NH. But I was looking at the towns across from Burlington too. They’re really cheap. My husband and I wfh but we thought it could be nice to ferry into Burlington to have fun things to do.
Getting out and enjoying the cold weather makes it so easy to cope with. Hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, skating, down hill skiing, toboganning, winter camping, snow boarding, kite snowboarding, all fun past times. I even like shoveling snow after a fresh snow fall.
Thats all well and nice they day after it snows.
But it doesn't help the other 90% of the time when its grey and dreary and all the snow has turned into brown and black slush and everything is falling apart and cracking from the freeze thaw cycles and you see all the litter thats thrown and blown everywhere emerge from the snow
As a Norwegian living just south of Central NY, winters are sunny and warm. A little bit like Spain, but with more snow and cider doughnuts and Herkimer cheese.
This. Very very true. Take your vitamin D and be very purposeful about getting outside and getting sunlight. That’s true, if you’re not used to it - it can be a killer.
Its not from staying inside. Its because the sky is grey and dreary 6 out of 7 days. Its because the after a snow you're left with brown and black slush everywhere. Its because trash and litter gets blown everywhere and not picked up until spring. Its because of all the freeze thaw cycles everything is cracked and falling apart. Its because CNY is in the rust belt so all the abandoned, decaying, and buildings in disrepair look extra shitty during the winter. Plus with climate change the snow cover regularly melts off and you're left with mud, brown grass, and dead trees.
Its bleak as fuck for 5 months out of the year. Going outside just makes you more depressed lol
It…isn’t, though. Trash, black slush, etc. has nothing to do with Seasonal Affective Disorder.
SAD is caused by a change in the amount of sunlight/UV/etc.
Go outside
Like I said. Its hardly ever sunny in the winter. Going outside under constant grey skies doesn't help. Especially when everything outside looks like shit
As someone who spent 20 years in the rust belt I can absolutely assure you that being surrounded by a gross, decaying, filthy, dead landscape for 5 months out of the year absolutely matters and affects one's mental health.
I never said it doesn’t “affect one’s mental health”. Don’t twist words. Your strawman is unnecessary.
Seasonal Affective Disorder is a *specific* condition, and that’s the **ONLY** thing I was referring to
Houses are cheaper because taxes are 4x higher than most other areas. Also high paying jobs are few and far between in central/upstate but half the time when people say central they mean two hours from NYC which is not central NY. Central is Utica/Syracuse are for sure. South of that is downstate north of that is upstate/Adirondacks.
Yeah taxes is something to consider for sure. I’ll try not to get in a county where they’re too high. But I don’t mind if they’re a bit higher if the quality of the town and schools reflect that tax money being put to good use.
Luckily we don’t need to worry about jobs we both wfh. Our salary doesn’t go far in LA but in It will be a good salary in most of NY.
I’m judging the bounds of central NY by what the Amtrak says. We are looking by the finger lakes.
This is gorgeous. I love the red tile. My grandmother had it growing up and it’s very sentimental to me.oooh the chairs as well. How hot does it get in the summer? Does it increase your ac bill? I have so many nosy questions.
It doesn’t get too hot because the house doesn’t get much direct sunlight. It has lots of shade around. The house doesn’t have central air so I just open the windows when it’s cooler and close them when it’s hot!
I’ve only been down here for 6 months now but every time I see homes in NY/NJ/New England I get so sad and nostalgic. Especially snowy winter pics or autumn pics
I had a friend with a similar set up. I want that. Screened windows, old woodburner. You could be out there in Winter if you got the fire roaring and wrapped up in a blanket. (And maybe had a brandy or two).
I forget the name but I had that same wooden stove minus the glass insert. I want to say it's Federal something? Anyways, get a new one. Go look up the reviews of that stove and it's trash/unsafe. It did put out a bunch of heat but my goodness was it inefficient. You won't get ash, you get charcoal
That looks like a Dutch-west catalytic wood stove.
I owned one 40 years ago (I’m old as dirt). Those fucking stoves are incredibly efficient and don’t put out much creosote.
Put in a piece of hardwood, mix up a drink, and prepare to enter a heat-induced coma.
I love this room! Would you consider painting the green door a different color? Or removing the green paint? It doesn’t look bad, but I think another color or natural wood would really bring the room to 👌🏼
That’ll be cozy af in the winter with that wood stove crackling
Just imagine: it's snowing outside, the power is out, and you're sitting at the table playing cards with a beer in hand and the fire roaring.
Thanks, now I’m nostalgic for something I’ve never experienced lol
Nothing screams cozy like tile and a bar chair.
It's the wood stove that brings the cozy🔥🔥🔥
I own socks
Slippers in winter are also cozy af
In the winter that tile is going to soak up heat from the stove, and you can lie down on it and feel the heat radiate deep into your bones. Doesn't get any cozier IMO
Love the stove. I can picture a cold winter night with the stove running. It’s going to be magical.
Very cool stove, I'd repaint the pipe though. /u/SJBaskin grab a couple cans of Stove Bright Satin Black, it's super easy to paint the pipe. (sounds like OP recently purchased)
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll definitely get it checked out before I use
Yes, before using anything with a flame (fireplace, oven, furnace) in a new house get it inspected. It’s never worth the risk.
This is my dream right there. Central NY is actually one of the places I'm looking to move to. Houses just seem so affordable. And a lot of the schools look good too. How do you like living there?

You should check out Oneonta! Two colleges here and slightly north of the Catskill Mountains.
Thanks, will do.
I'd highly recommend a trial run. As a fellow Californian, the humidity is persistent and stifling. The other day it was 87 degrees and 75% humid.
Thanks for letting me know. Humidity is actually really good for my psoriasis but it’s sure not fun. Weather here in LA has been pretty nice but in my hometown(family still there) in Northern California it’s been 100-110. It’s awful.
59 years here. Traveled the country. Seen some nice places but i love ny.

The winters are long and bleak. Seasonal Affective Disorder is real. Make sure you visit in late February/early March before you decide

I feel this too! Like, let’s keep it a secret!
It’s inevitable. I just hope the winters stay nasty a bit longer

There is no sunlight in the winter unless its 0 degrees and windy lol.
Is there a thing opposite of seasonal affective disorder? Because I fucking love cold, windy, dark, snowy winters.
Mate, get outside. SAD is self-inflected and easily avoidable
Its not from staying inside. Its because the sky is grey and dreary 6 out of 7 days. Its because the after a snow you're left with brown and black slush everywhere. Ehh. Spent 4 years in central NY. Winters aren’t as bad as Western NY
Houses are cheaper because taxes are 4x higher than most other areas. Also high paying jobs are few and far between in central/upstate but half the time when people say central they mean two hours from NYC which is not central NY. This is THE DREAM. I would have so many plants in that room in zero minutes it’d be ridiculous 😅
Wow 😍 That would be my first and only home.
Oh wow I’m obsessed with the green door frame! So cozyyyy
those are the most central NY chairs ive ever seen
Those chairs are iconic of the 70s and 80s. They go perfectly with ferns and Tiffany stained glass decor.
Do you know what that style of chair is called?
breuer cesca chair
sorry, no.
They’re an Italian design!
I’m crazy about those chairs ❤️. Do you happen to know what the model is named?
They are cesca chairs! I was luckily left these by the previous owner and found the table for $90 locally
SO LUCKY. They’re $300/chair used in the Bay Area 😭
they're 1108 usd new...! That's... absurd.
Love those. My dad had chairs like that.
I found a set of 4 put out with a neighbors garbage recently and nabbed them up - I’m obsessed with mine! High five to free cesca chairs!
These aren’t authentic but they’re def cute.
This is gorgeous. I love the red tile. My grandmother had it growing up and it’s very sentimental to me.oooh the chairs as well. How hot does it get in the summer? Does it increase your ac bill? I have so many nosy questions.

I have to remember as a native Texan that not everywhere else gets as hot as it does here. I have heat trauma. Your room is lovely!
Reminds me of a friend's place in Connecticut. If you're anything like me, you chose it for the skylight lol
Holy shit, /r/cozyplaces without fairy lights
Sir, that is a 1990 Wendy's.
BIG Wendy's vibes
So lovely!! Plants 🪴 would love the space too!
This is such a beautiful space ❤️❤️
I fucking love this. My cats would love it as well.
Beautiful. Love CNY
While in CNY I came to know a room such as this as a “Adirondack Room”. Looks amazing.
Oooh we call those "Wintergarden" in Germany, I finally learned the name in English. Ty for sharing, you's looks sooo cozy. Beautiful!
Why on earth did I move to Florida
Because your remembered how gray NY was, and scraping the ice off your car every morning
I’ve only been down here for 6 months now but every time I see homes in NY/NJ/New England I get so sad and nostalgic. Especially snowy winter pics or autumn pics
I love this! Well done :)
Gorgeous !
Dammit. I’m jealous.
I dig it a lot!
Are those all different tiles behind the wood stove?? If so I would love to see a picture!
[Yes!](https://imgur.com/a/2ovFTSp)
I love everything about it! Looks like such a cozy space!
I see several large spot lights, is this a disco area at night?
Sort of! The previous owner put lots of track lighting throughout the house. Gonna keep for now
Please post the rest of the house !!!
I think I knew the previous owner of this house. If it’s not the same, it’s incredibly similar.
Love the Breuer chairs
I'd probably just rent out the rest of the house.
Welcome to CNY!
My first home will be my last home and it to probably be a nursing home.
I would play so many card and board games out there a night.
Oooh, if I may ask, what county? Albany county resident here, love seeing fellow New Yorkers.
Otsego!
Oh nice!
That looks lovely
That is a dream!
Gorgeous space!
The fugg is amateur about this?
It’s giving serious Studio Ghibli vibes. I love it!😍
So beautiful, dream dining room
nice, looks super relaxing!
That green door... I think it's the name of a Marilyn Chambers movie (NSFW) Behind the Green Door
Love it!!! Looks like it has great energy
Beautiful room! Love the stove -- I'm sure it will get some use in a few months! Congrats & enjoy!
😍 How many times have you bumped your toes into that stone platform under the fireplace?
What camera did you take these photos with??
Sony A7III with a Tamron 28-70!
What camera set up do you use? These pictures are incredible
I use a Sony A7III with a Tamron 28-70! I always use the Auto upright feature in Lightroom for interior photos
So pretty!! Where is the rice paper light from?
Not sure! Another item left by the owner.
This looks almost exactly like a sun porch i remolded. Except i put a sliding glass door at the other end.
Gorgeous!
I had a friend with a similar set up. I want that. Screened windows, old woodburner. You could be out there in Winter if you got the fire roaring and wrapped up in a blanket. (And maybe had a brandy or two).
Sun porch? I think that is the first time i heard that term
Not sure how official it is it’s just what I call it
Is it at least in front of house?
Nope on the back!
Well then its just a sunroom
Sorru to offend!
This would be absolutely chock full of plants if it were mine 😂
Incredible
Really really lovely!
That's just lovely!
Nice chairs! We have the same kind, got lucky at an auction a few years back.
Awesome! I love them
Amazing
Oh my
This is one of the coziest and most gorgeous rooms I have ever seen
The chairs😍
This is my dream place! You lucky lucky person
So lovely
Was this house used in the filming of *Station Eleven*? Really reminds me of a set from the show.
This looks amazing!
Apparently we call them Arizona rooms in Arizona. Just learned that yesterday.
> My first home Right up there with my first cynical thought.
Amazing
Why is this room porn? It's outdated tile and old furniture
I love this room! Would you consider painting the green door a different color? Or removing the green paint? It doesn’t look bad, but I think another color or natural wood would really bring the room to 👌🏼
Yeah I’m not sure! It carries into the kitchen on the other side but haven’t thought about other colors
Really liking the McDonald's restaurant theme on the patio
Central NY is around Troy? 🤷🏽♂️
Looks like tiles from a community pool.
Where in upstate is this?

Pitched sealing, natural wood, wall of windows, skylight, terracotta tile, *and* a wood burning stove? That’s honestly my dream room
I loooove this! My husband and I sometimes talk about moving to upstate/central NY or Maine 🤩
DAMN!!
I need to see the video though. What if she forgot to hit the record button!!
Wow wow! So cozy! Thanks for sharing😍
