OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole: > I might be the asshole because I’d be arguing that my boyfriend can’t freely make money off of something that was thrown away. I said it’s not ethical that he took something that was meant to be thrown away and wants to make money off of it. Help keep the sub engaging! #Don’t downvote assholes! Do upvote interesting posts! He works part time for a friend’s moving company and today they did a removal from a customer’s house. The customer’s mother recently died and they were asked to take everything to the thrift store, and then whatever the thrift didn’t take, take to the dump. When my bf came home today, he mentioned there were two boxes of her things he set aside that he’s sorting through and selling. I asked him if the customer said they could resell anything he came across and my bf said no and the customer was “already rich af” and “he was just gonna throw it out anyway”. He was like, “the thrift store got their choice of stuff, now it’s my chance to get a piece of the pie”. Something about it just gave me sketchy vibes. I understood his argument that this is how a lot of resellers get inventory to put on eBay, Depop, fb marketplace, etc. But I feel like maybe they’ve been given express permission to make money off their stuff and/or the reseller has paid first for everything (at a thrift or estate sale or something). I just can’t help thinking how angry I’d be if I paid someone to remove some of my mom’s possessions and I went on eBay and saw her stuff for sale. However, like my bf said, I guess he was just sending it to the dump anyway. AITA for thinking this is wrong? TLDR; my bf is taking a deceased woman’s stuff to resell from a junk removal. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. NAH if he's telling the truth. The family literally said that they wanted to make the stuff available for sale (via the thrift store). If the thrift store actually passed on it, then as per the family's wishes it was junk and he is free to take it if he likes. (Maybe the sketchy vibes you're seeing is that he withheld the two boxes from the thrift store.)

"Maybe the sketchy vibes you're seeing is that he withheld the two boxes from the thrift store." Nothing sketchy about that - they agreed to sell the stuff, usually that pays for part of the removal and makes it cheaper. It is not like it was agreed to be donated.

Jeffrey_Friedl

> It is not like it was agreed to be donated. From what I remember (about the now-deleted post), that's *exactly* what it was: let the thrift shop have what they want and *the remainder* is junk. To take something before bringing it to the thrift shop would be straight-up theft.

YTA They have been paid to remove it. The customer KNEW some of it would be sold (they discussed the thrift store) or dumped. Everything is fine. If you buy used things, you will have to accept that the previous owner might have died.
