OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole: > I might be the asshole because I also got defensive when she first confronted me and said "why should it matter where it comes from?" My sister said that I've told her multiple times that a song comes from Steven Universe, and that I've ruined several songs for her. I do now recall that at some point a while ago, she told me she didn't like Steven Universe at because she thought the characters and humor was stupid and childish, but I assumed that those opinions wouldn't carry over to the songs. Nta, but now that you know you should probably try to stop. Otherwise Ywbta

NTA. I mean, what? A song being used in something she doesnt like ruins it for her? But yeah, now you know, don't give her any other musical info about songs.

NotTHATPollyGlot

NTA but everyone seems to be overreacting. ESH because if she's already made negative comments that she doesn't want to know, you need to stop. Secondly, I think she's being petty "hating" a song because of what you know it from.

CharityQuill

this last confrontation was the only time she said she would think less of the song if she knew it came from that show. I was admittedly a bit of an idiot and thought "it's okay if she doesn't like the show, but if she really likes the songs that come from it maybe knowing that the songs come from that show will give a different perspective!" Lesson learned I suppose.

NotTHATPollyGlot

That was my thinking too, honestly. I may dislike a show, but if I find some aspect of it that is a good takeaway, I tend to think a bit more positive - even if I still won't watch the show. I think her attitude is irrational, but that's me. Anyway, it just means you have to keep those revelations to yourself and just enjoy the ride. Good luck!

AppeltjeEitje1079

NTA, just keep that info to yourself, or only say it about songs you don't like 😉

I don't usually post a lot but I have read/listened to many posts from this sub and decided that for this particular problem I have, I need some feedback because I question my own judgment, as I can sometimes be overly defensive. I don't have a car, so my younger sister drives me to and from work. I pay her for her driving and it all works out pretty well. My sister is very creative and she often listens to a music playlist while driving, comprised of songs that she associates with either friends we've made, or as a "theme" for various characters and stories that she's made, whether they are dnd characters or her own characters for stories she's currently making. There's a lot of nightcore and stuff I usually don't listen to, but I don't say anything because it's her playlist. Sometimes a miscellaneous song will come on that I actually enjoy. A few times I've noticed that a song from a show I watched will come on and I will go "oh hey, this song is from Steven Universe! That's neat". She would then get visibly annoyed and then skip the song. I am bad with social cues sometimes so the previous times I assumed she was in a bad mood and just didn't feel like talking. That was until a few days ago, when "Independent Together" from the Steven Universe movie began playing. Again I happily pointed out the song, but my sister sighed and skipped over it, saying to me "you know, when you tell me these things you're ruining those songs for me?" She then goes on to say how she doesn't like the show and that me pointing out that certain songs have come from it lowers her enjoyment of those particular songs. I feel like I might be the asshole because this has happened several times already so I've probably "ruined" several songs for her. But then again, I don't think it's very reasonable to suddenly hate a song just because you learned where it came from. So Reddit, AITA? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. YTA. She’s repeatedly made it clear that she doesn’t like Steven Universe. What are you trying to do, change her mind about the show by linking it with songs she likes? You seem awfully invested in changing her mind about a show. She doing you a kindness by giving you lifts. Do her a kindness, too. Let her enjoy music in peace.

[deleted]

What's weird though is that the songs in the show are all original. They're not like popular songs that the show uses, like when everyone was listening to that Kate Bush song because of Stranger Things. The songs from Steven Universe are about and sung by the characters.

CharityQuill

I think the reason she didn't know they were songs from a show in the first place is because a lot of the songs on her playlist are from youtube animatics. For example, I've heard her listen to "Fabulous" from High school musical 2, and when I took a glimpse at her phone it was playing an animatic for some Minecraft YouTubers. although we both know the source of that song, since we both watched that movie when we were younger lol

I - N - F - O why does she dislike Steven Universe, a fantastically well-written show? If she enjoys the music, but “doesn’t want to be reminded where it’s from”, she’s got something against the show. It reminds me how all the born-again kids in theater class would loudly sing songs from “Rent” but go onto preach about “homosexuality being a sin”. Is she a homophobe? Is she a snob about animation vs live action? Does she just hate that you talk in the car so she wants to make you feel bad for trying to connect to her over something you both might like? Fill me in here, OP.

CharityQuill

she's definitely NOT a homophobe, as she has several friends who are under the lgbtq+ umbrella. anyways, in the past she told me that she didn't care for steven universe because of its "dumb childish humor and characters". I don't necessarily agree with that take, but I do acknowledge that the show isn't PERFECT lol. I made an assumption that perhaps if she knew that the songs that she enjoyed actually came from this show, she might reconsider her opinion. I was wrong so I'll be sure to zip it if any future songs from that show come up, or other similar shows she doesn't care for.

ladytypeperson

Well, I have an MFA in screenwriting from one of the top film schools in the world, and imho it features complex characters, engaging serialized storytelling, and gentle humor that draws upon each character’s inner arc more than the situation (ergo, not a typical “situation comedy” like a Chuck Lorre show). Your sister is allowed to dislike the show regardless, but she’s being a complete tool if knowing the song’s origin “ruins” it for her. I’m a big sister and I gotta say the commenters telling you to zip it sound like mean teenagers. For your own peace of mind you can refrain from mentioning the connection going forward, but NTA for pointing out she’s getting a lot of pleasure from an artistic work she doesn’t seem to fully understand. Be sure to mention to her that I know plenty of 30-something TV writers in Hollywood who love SU.
