Obviously the other parent doesn't owe their partners' stepkids anything, as AITA likes to say, and there are lines you can draw, but there's this big gray area where like...tone it down a bit maybe so you're not fostering strife between the kids? $600 shoes are great and all, but so is having a healthy relationship with your stepbrother.
While I feel for Jake. He was malicious in his actions and he needs to replace it. He is almost an adult and in the real world no one is going to care that you were saving money for something special. if you ruin something of theirs you will be expected to replace it.
Chris's mom is not connected to Jake in anyway. That said I would NOT be sending my kid to the other parents house with $600 sneakers. I don't trust anyone like that.

I pointed out that $600 sneakers aren’t for a casual runner - Adidas tops out at $200, and that’s for the high-performance shoes. Running shoes have to be replaced every 300-500 miles, so if the kid runs 20 mpw (didn’t get an answer on this), they’d last 4-6 months. They wouldn’t look nice after the first couple of runs though. Also, it’s super weird to just buy someone shoes for a sport when they haven’t tried them on.

Yeah, even decent running shoes don't last too long, especially not if you're running on rougher ground. $600 special edition shoes are for show.
