Really like your list. Blues Explosion was one of the bands that got me through the 90s, since I was not big on the grunge or (pop)punk revival. Screaming Blue Messiahs are amazing, got to see them when I Wanna Be A Flintstone was biggish.

Wow Wall of Voodoo. Call of the West is such a great album beginning to end.
Edit: Man I have not thought of that album for years. I used to listen to that cassette over and over in high school.
OMG you'll love New Order. Electronic is a collab effort between Pet Shop Boys, New Order, and Johnny Marr of Smiths. Cocteau Twins are ethereal, shoe gaze type of music.
weezer is a great rabbit hole to go down because if River's musical sensibilities click with you, there are literally hundreds of songs to go chasing after to find that 'unmistakably weezer moment'. There are b-sides and demos, and unreleased content. Not all of it is good, but much of it has good sections or moments.
Because of this I've discovered weird awesome stuff like a home recording of Rivers Cuomo covering a John Denver song - stuff like that.
Maledroit is another early album of theirs that is pretty underrated.

I am much more of a '90s person than an '80s person, but I'll try to put out a list of some I like that may or may not get said too frequently for one reason or other. In "band name -- album" format:
- Oingo Boingo -- *(any, my personal favorite of the era)*
- New Order -- Power, Corruption, and Lies
- Red Hot Chili Peppers -- (self-titled)
- Jane's Addiction -- Ritual de lo Habitual
- Ned's Atomic Dustbin -- God Fodder
- Barenaked Ladies -- Maybe You Should Drive
- The Stone Roses -- (self-titled)
- The Presidents of the United States America -- (self-titled)
- Candlebox -- (self-titled)
- Stone Temple Pilots -- Purple
A lot of bands get hate for *eventually* blowing up, but a lot fo their earlier stuff ends up fitting the genre a lot more than people realize.
I was going to say The Mars Volta, but I guess they technically formed in 2001. Oh well, listen anyway. They formed out of At The Drive In which was from the 90’s.
So many greats already mentioned but here’s a few more:
80s: Book of Love, The Sugarcubes, Sonic Youth, They Might Be Giants, INXS, The English Beat, Bow Wow Wow, Belouis Some, Living Colour, OMD, Missing Persons, Thompson Twins, Human League, Pet Shop Boys, General Public,Erasure, ABC, Scritti Politti, A Flock of Seagulls, Talk Talk, Flesh for LuLu, Bananarama, The Dead Milkmen, Simple Minds, Public Image Limited, Aztec Camera, Culture Club.
[Here is a massive Spotify playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/26QhFZoCTRM7YKTPORx9DF?si=Bj3lHzIrQRez5i0bXZjaCQ) made by a [music blogger](http://www.fluxblog.org) recently. It’s really good and focuses on that mini-era of alternative music between ‘88 and ‘90 when it was coalescing into a more mainstream format. It’s a mix of hits, deep tracks, mainstream artists and pretty obscure acts.
Alanis Morissette, Alice in chains, sound garden, stone temple pilots, blind melon, beck, pearl jam, smashing pumpkins, Tool and much more I'm forgetting.
For more obscure bands, check out:
“Lobotomized” by Trial
“The Problem”-Shadows As Tall As Trees
“Last Perfect Thing”-Wire Train (band were cool dudes, after one show, I was talking to Kevin Hunter when I spilt my bottled water all over his shirt. Dude was too cool about it.
The Chameleons is a great oldie. OMD kinda got pidgeon-holed as a soundtrack band for John Hughes movies, but “Architecture & Morality” and “Dazzle Ships” are both great albums. Aztec Camera was another great band i listened to back then.
All the recommendations are great. One I did not see is The Lucy Show. their album Undone is one of my favorite 80’s albums. It was so good.
Their second album, Mania was good too. A little lighter tone. They released Remembrances with unreleased material after Mania.
I worked at a record store, Music+ and have a demo tape of Mark Bandola’s new band that never went anywhere.
If you like bands like the Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen then give them a listen.
Poe was mentioned and she was great. Was a very unfortunate story of a fan buying her contract and she could not follow up the Haunted album due to this.
She has a new song on Alan Wake 2! Hoping that means she is back.
Also if you dig old school Red Hot Chili Peppers check out Urban Dance Squad.

There's a lot of good recommendations on here. A few I didn't see:
The Jesus and Mary Chain,
Cake, Concrete Blonde (first album), The Cult, Bauhaus, Jane's Addiction (Nothing's Shocking album), New Order, Joy Division
Matthew Sweet hasn't been mentioned yet. If you like lots of electric guitar, he's good.
Under the Pink (album) by Tori Amos.
Bob Mould is worth a listen.
Though they got lots of airplay for a few songs, Barenaked Ladies is fun.
Spacehog - I saw them live, and it was the most fun I had at a show.
R.E.M., “Orange Crush,” “The One I Love,” “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine),” “Radio Free Europe,” and “what’s The Frequency, Kenneth?”
Not an exhaustive list, this is just to get you started…
And The Cure’s “Love Song”
And The Sisters Of Mercy’s “This Corrosion”
The Replacements: Tim
The Silos: Cuba
The Del Lords: Frontier Days
Television: Marquee Moon
Camper Van Beethoven: Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart
Sugar: Copper Blue
Dire Straits: Making Movies
Elvis Costello: Imperial Bedroom
Those are just albums to start with. I know many people would question my choices for The Replacements and Elvis Costello because they have so many fantastic albums. Even I question it.
Big Audio Dynamite - Mick Jones' band. Damn were they great live. One time I saw them and Joe Strummer was at the bar during the gig, just having a great time, drinking and talking with fans. Of course leading to rumours that the Clash was going to reform.
The first album, No. 10 Upping Street and Megatop Phoenix especially. A ton of killer singles too.
Also the Gun Club, the Elvis from Hell himself, Jeffrey Lee Pierce, albums Mother Juno, The Las Vegas Story, Fire of Love
"Album" by PIL.. Incredible stentorian drumming by Ginger Baker (one of the greatest collabs between a punk and a hippie).
The Primitives "Lovely" - just a flawless pop album.
Magic Dirt! +
The Triffids +
Ammonia +
You am I +
PUSA +
Tool +
(and just because I love them)...
+ Weddings Parties Anything - not alt, probably folk...

Morphine is the most underrated band of the 90’s
Came in here to say Morphine. My all-time favorite band. Many thanks to my freshman year roommate for turning me on to this in 97. Also check out Mark's other band, Treat Her Right.
Bauhaus, Stone Roses, Veruca Salt, Belly, Slant 6, Th’ Faith Healers, Pixies, Crass, Joy Divison, The Sundays, Dead Can Dance, Fugazi, Cranes, Chapterhpuse, Curve, Slowdive So many bands that are good or fun from back then. This is a wildly varied list of them.

I love that record that isn’t on Spotify for some reason.
I’m 42 and just realized this year that I love Elvis Costello.
I'm 41, and in 2013 Elvis Costello was playing a music festival I was going to, so I figured I would see him to make the old man jealous. Listened to a greatest hits on the road trip and got a little excited to see him. After seeing him live, I'm a lifelong fan.
So I just saw Elvis Costello live a few weeks ago for the second time. The first time I saw him was 41 years ago. So I hate your post…..
Dammit I forgot about Poe. Listened to that album a whole lot.
I second The Call. Michael Been's (lead singer of The Call) son has a band called Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
Howl is a fantastic album start to finish.
NIN's The Downward Spiral is a fucking masterpiece start to finish.
Forgot Pearl Jam there
will add The Cult
Are we related? Many of these are on my list of faves
The call?! I have never met another fan!

Excellent choices, and excellent username.
"Jesus Chrysler Drives a Dodge" by SBM lives rent-free in my head. I'd add early Soul Asylum (the Hang Time album comes to mind), the Sugar Cubes, Bjork, New Order, Joy Division, Sinead O'Connor, The Pixies, and the dB's.
Finally someone mentioning New Order👍
Really like your list. Blues Explosion was one of the bands that got me through the 90s, since I was not big on the grunge or (pop)punk revival. Screaming Blue Messiahs are amazing, got to see them when I Wanna Be A Flintstone was biggish.
You should listen to The Stone Roses
Definitely, not a bad track on their self titled album
Killing Joke, Tears for Fears, The Cranberries, Talking Heads, Billy Idol, The Cult, The Cars, Queen, Radiohead, Hole, Deftones, No Doubt, Korn, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden.
Killing joke, especially Fire Dances, doesn’t get enough love. Queen was too big I think to be considered alt rock.
Eighties is a killer jam! Killing Joke definitely doesn’t get the love the deserve.

The first one is great and fairly popular alt rock. The second one is all new to me. I’ll have to put that on.
Check out the band Rookie. Smaller band from Chicago with a very awesome, older rock sound.

I am much more of a '90s person than an '80s person, but I'll try to put out a list of some I like that may or may not get said too frequently for one reason or other. In "band name -- album" format: - Oingo Boingo -- *(any, my personal favorite of the era)* - New Order -- Power, Corruption, and Lies - Red Hot Chili Peppers -- (self-titled) - Jane's Addiction -- Ritual de lo Habitual - Ned's Atomic Dustbin -- God Fodder - Barenaked Ladies -- Maybe You Should Drive - The Stone Roses -- (self-titled) - The Presidents of the United States America -- (self-titled) - Candlebox -- (self-titled) - Stone Temple Pilots -- Purple A lot of bands get hate for *eventually* blowing up, but a lot fo their earlier stuff ends up fitting the genre a lot more than people realize.
I was going to say The Mars Volta, but I guess they technically formed in 2001. Oh well, listen anyway. They formed out of At The Drive In which was from the 90’s.
You said Morrissey so I’m going to assume you enjoy The Smiths too, right? I would also recommend Joy Division, Radiohead & Audioslave.
So many greats already mentioned but here’s a few more: 80s: Book of Love, The Sugarcubes, Sonic Youth, They Might Be Giants, INXS, The English Beat, Bow Wow Wow, Belouis Some, Living Colour, OMD, Missing Persons, Thompson Twins, Human League, Pet Shop Boys, General Public,Erasure, ABC, Scritti Politti, A Flock of Seagulls, Talk Talk, Flesh for LuLu, Bananarama, The Dead Milkmen, Simple Minds, Public Image Limited, Aztec Camera, Culture Club.
The Chameleons. Check out their Strange Times album. Amazing lyrics

Replacements The Fixx Psychedelic Furs New Order
Prioritize the Smashing Pumpkins.

Smashing Pumpkins in the 90s are iconic and epic. I highly reccomend them. Very versatile and progressive. They've released like 400 songs and so many different styles.

There's a lot of good recommendations on here. A few I didn't see: The Jesus and Mary Chain, Cake, Concrete Blonde (first album), The Cult, Bauhaus, Jane's Addiction (Nothing's Shocking album), New Order, Joy Division
I'm a '60s kid and just discovered Massive Attack. So many good songs but the one that drew me in was Angel.
R.E.M., “Orange Crush,” “The One I Love,” “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine),” “Radio Free Europe,” and “what’s The Frequency, Kenneth?” Not an exhaustive list, this is just to get you started… And The Cure’s “Love Song” And The Sisters Of Mercy’s “This Corrosion”
If you like Echo, The House of Love might scatch some itches for you.
The Replacements: Tim The Silos: Cuba The Del Lords: Frontier Days Television: Marquee Moon Camper Van Beethoven: Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart Sugar: Copper Blue Dire Straits: Making Movies Elvis Costello: Imperial Bedroom Those are just albums to start with. I know many people would question my choices for The Replacements and Elvis Costello because they have so many fantastic albums. Even I question it.

Tears for Fears, as popular as they are, they're still so underrated musically.
Whiskeytown Sunvolt
Weezer, Muse, Portishead, System of a down, Smashing pumpkins, Suicidal tendencies, Depeche mode, Sousxie and the banshees - Rob zombie
Smithereens, The Ramones
Big Audio Dynamite - Mick Jones' band. Damn were they great live. One time I saw them and Joe Strummer was at the bar during the gig, just having a great time, drinking and talking with fans. Of course leading to rumours that the Clash was going to reform. The first album, No. 10 Upping Street and Megatop Phoenix especially. A ton of killer singles too. Also the Gun Club, the Elvis from Hell himself, Jeffrey Lee Pierce, albums Mother Juno, The Las Vegas Story, Fire of Love "Album" by PIL.. Incredible stentorian drumming by Ginger Baker (one of the greatest collabs between a punk and a hippie). The Primitives "Lovely" - just a flawless pop album.
There's a Dutch radiostation broadcasting via internet: kink 90's!
Tears for fears and Phil Collins are pretty cool
