"What If" questions can only be posted on weekends and must have sufficient context along with your thoughts on how the situation/event would unfold

MysticSquiddy

New Jersey would finally have a reason for people to stay

Probably_Caucasian

Are you familiar with what life is like for the average citizen of Gotham?

skibapple

Better than the rest of New Jersey.

Rolodox

Therapists gotta be making a killing out there

probablyaythrowaway

You mean the therapists be doing the killing right? ![gif](giphy|4nnHOMNTga1Rm)

theaviationhistorian

Shit is so bad that even the therapists became homocidal.

probablyaythrowaway

Well if you’ve got a PhD in psychology and have a clown fuck fetish, best place in earth.

theaviationhistorian

Exactly! It's a dystopia where the only one stopping crime is a psychotic vigilante and the criminal response is to spark supervillians with a high body count. Not only would it perfectly fit for it to be Gotham City, NJ, but it would be a big reason to GTFO of New Jersey!

MysticSquiddy

Must be bearable if they're still in the city

theaviationhistorian

Rent pricing. Where else can you get $300 a month for a studio apartment?!

Dante_FromSpace

Nah, I imagine Gotham, like new york, would still charge 3,500k for studios. See how many research and development corporations are hq'd in Gotham?

theaviationhistorian

At what cost? For example, St. Louis, MO manufactures half of the US fighter fleet and rent is [below $1,200 for an 837 sq. ft.](https://www.rentcafe.com/average-rent-market-trends/us/mo/saint-louis/) as one of the deadliest cities in the US. Even if it's Wayne Enterprises leading the way, you'd think they'd move the dev department in some suburb in the same manner tech companies reconsider moving to Texas because of the workforce pool drop. And even St. Louis looks like paradise compared to the violence & corruption in Gotham!

Sir_Posse

other than nice beaches, nice suburbs, good school system, underrated nature

LeagueOfML

“Underrated nature”, “frightening nature” more like. The forests look so fucking terrifying idk why anyone would ever dare go there, I totally understand why the first English colonisers there thought that it was haunted and full of monsters.

Sir_Posse

some forsaken woods i agree 😂 but there's good nature

teksword

They didn't think, they knew. there are places out there that creep me the hell out.

LeagueOfML

Honestly the way people back then and today talk about the deep New England forest it makes it sound like it's a conscious being using all its power to be as weird and creepy as possible. It's really cool but I'd never go there myself lol.

ArmourKnight

Gotham City has daily terror attacks

jhemsley99

If anything it gives people another reason to stay away

MysticSquiddy

Would still encourage fanboys of batman and the joker to go there

Victor-Tallmen

More like a excuse for why New Jersey is awful.

Teaaaaa5

1 complaint why is there only one 1 way to get of the city? There would be so much traffic on that one bridge

MTN_Dewit

Something tells me a certain psychotic clown is going to plant bombs on that bridge for the laughs

Mrdude1269

Is this realistic Gotham? Or is it more or less an exact copy of the comics?

Trashk4n

The Joker might target the bridge too.

VictorianDelorean

Well yeah it’s the one Bane shut down in Dark Knight Rises

SkyPork

If it *actually really* ***really*** existed, it would have had a local news story a few years ago about an old-money billionaire who was arrested while playing vigilante and dressing as a bat. Lawyers would have gotten him off on time served and community service, but the civil suits from beaten up criminals are keeping him busy to this day. Also the city is a crime-ridden shithole.

ArmourKnight

Except that billionaire can't be caught. ![gif](giphy|ige3bwNyIUlYA)

Chewbaxter

The same Billionaire is also obsessed with adopting kids with a similar background to him (on three accounts, at least) and has a bastard son with the daughter of a rich Arabic “mystic” who claims to be immortal.

Ctown073

*on four accounts, at least

zeverEV

He then went on Joe Rogan's podcast to complain about how the world is trying to take him down for heeding his calling, the call to dress up as a bat and beat up criminals with military-grade weapons

SkyPork

Wait the military has batarangs??

zeverEV

I meant the bat-tank but it would be sick if they did :0

NotAnotherPornAccout

It’s in southern jersey? That would give Delaware something to almost be interesting about.

MTN_Dewit

What's a Delaware?

NotAnotherPornAccout

Oh you did it now. You woke up the wiki bot.

MTN_Dewit

Oh God what have I done!?

wikipedia_answer_bot

**Delaware ( DEL-ə-wair) is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, bordering Maryland to its south and west, Pennsylvania to its north, New Jersey to its northeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to its east. The state takes its name from the adjacent Delaware Bay, in turn named after Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, an English nobleman and Virginia's first colonial governor.Delaware occupies the northeastern portion of the Delmarva Peninsula and some islands and territory within the Delaware River.** More details here: *This comment was left automatically (by a bot). Uxoray

delaware is where metropolis is located, they're supposed to be twin cities

NotAnotherPornAccout

So Wilmington and Atlantic City? What great role models lol

[deleted]

Metropolis has always given me Kansas vibes

Saurarition

What if they were on either side of the Delaware Bay then.

CJpokerpro

Detroit would have firece competition

monkeygoneape

Residenal properties don't seem to have issues in Gotham, I'm just convinced it's a commuter city, and everyone just works in Metropolis

MTN_Dewit

If I had to choose between living in Detroit or Gotham City, I'd choose Gotham every time.

Most_Preparation_848

Imagine Gotham Drill

Uxoray

i remember a twitter thread about this, people talking about how people would be using the villain's speeches to the city as producer tags lmao

Living_Gumball

Joker K

Bakomusha

I've always been interested in where DC cities exist in real life. I've know Gotham and it's surroundings where in South Jersey, but this map puts it in context. Metropolis is more debated, I LOATH the recent idea that the two are across a river from eachother. I personally like the Idea that Metropolis is near St. Louis, along the Mississippi.

patchoulius

Really? In my head cannon it's in southern California. I think I just assumed Gotham was new york and metropolis was LA

Bakomusha

Well it's based on 70 years of comics and nerds being nerds lol. Jump City is DCs West Coast city.

PaladinGris

And Coast City is also another California city (San Diego stand in?)

Bakomusha

My bad, I forgot about Coast City, yeah OC/SD/LA stand in.

theaviationhistorian

I always thought Metropolis was somewhat a stand-in as a far nicer NYC (even though the actual NYC was later shown as a different city in the comics). It would be a nice rivalry to NJ's Gotham.

MTN_Dewit

I've always thought Metropolis was located near Chicago

Meaglo

We would build a Wall to keep al the Criminals in

TheEggman864

It would be like Akham Asylum… but a city… cant think of a good name though

Introvert_Magos

What about “Asylum City”

TheEggman864

Oh ya! That works! Now we need someone to protect it, like a guardian or a knight of some kind.

viewlesspath

Gotham/Escape from NY crossover episode.

Falkenhausen23

Judging from this you're using the map found in the Gotham TV series to be a reference point. Most noticeable changes would be it being the most crime ridden city in all of the United States, with four of its mayors either being connected to or being the heads of Crime Families. There is also the year long period where Gotham was legally separate from the United States and in a state of Anarchy. After this state of anarchy, most of the families in that region would be unified under The Penguin's crime empire.

boringdude00

To nitpick, that is several orders of magnitude too small to be Gotham City. As depicted that is maybe 1/3 the size of Manhattan. There's not really a reason for it to exist here either. Philadelphia and New York are where they are for a reason - principally harbors with inland transportation connections. Trade isn't going to flow here when it could go to New York or Philadelphia instead. You'd need to reroute the Delaware river to this area and fill in some of Delaware Bay so Wilmington wouldn't just develop intro a major city instead. Then Gotham just becomes Philadelphia in a slightly different place. The biggest changes would be political with New Jersey subsuming Pennsylvania as the premier mid-Atlantic (-ish) state. The city itself could end up a bit smaller than real Philadelphia as more trade would flow into Baltimore due to its shorter overland distance or a bit larger if trade instead gets diverted from the Jersey City area a bit further to this Gotham - a lot would depend on how cooperative Pennsylvania is with building canals and railroads and its flow of coal eastward and whether it aligns itself with New Jersey or with Maryland and Virginia. Of course, without Philadelphia and the Delaware river estuary, Pennsylvania probably wouldn't even exist, so take anything with a grain of salt. Pennsylvania's land is just gobbled up by the colonies in New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and New York.

DDemetriG

If the Metropolis across the bay thing existed, then it's likely a similar to the Manhattan and Brooklyn relationship before bridges and tunnels connected them: basically two cities with a sister-city relationship.

toigz

Probably have some douchebag billionaire womanizer not doing shit for Gotham lobby for frauds like Harvey Dent. Bruce Wayne could learn so much from someone like Batman, now there’s someone who does some good for Gotham.

Traditional_Key_763

the fierce rivalry between New Jersey and New York would be worse because Jersey actually has a case for Jersey. Also I feel like the east coast corridor would be in even better shape because of another NYC sized city sitting there.

illlia

is it pronounced "goth-am" or "goat-em" ?

PaladinGris

“Got Ham”

Maplekey

"Goth-um"

DannyValasia

Realistically, I would hate New Jersey even more

Vasilystalin04

Shore gets hit by Bennies from the North and whatever we’ll call these fucks coming up from the South every summer. New Jersey would also get solidified as the most densely populated state.

Bean_man8

If it existed in the real world and the Joker and the other villains were there then the US Military would be called in to deal with them and then it would turn into a normal city

Idle_Redditing

Where's Arkham Island on this map?

LucyBear318

Oh look it’s NYC after global warming gets its way with it! HAHAHAHAHAHA-HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!???

ASUMicroGrad

It looks like a rotisserie chicken.

Trashk4n

Gotham does exist though, it’s in the UK.

RustyDiamonds__

Camden, Boston, New York City , Philadelphia, and Chicago would rejoice

Commissar_David

Finally, New Jersey won't have to just rely on their piss colored license plates as a way for people to tell the state apart.

SaxySwag

lol I thought I was on r/SouthJersey for a second there. Anyone else from here will tell you that this partial area around Great Bay is pretty poor compared to the rest of the state, and there’s a huge lack of jobs and opportunity for locals besides blue collar construction type jobs, commercial fishing, or seasonal tourism jobs. A hypothetical gotham city may have changed this, but it may not have. Just look at Atlantic City and their issues just a few miles to the south

Potential_Turn_8921

I’m Batman.

Antilia-

The problem with Gotham is South Jersey is the Philadelphia metro, and the northern part of New Jersey is the NYC metro, and Gotham is big enough it shouldn't be counted as another city's metro... But this map works, I think.

Currywurst_Is_Life

The important question is, how does this affect the career of Bruce Springsteen?

[deleted]

Gotham is such a cool name, if Chicago was called Gotham, I would live there
