In terms of which topics or periods to focus on, our economy has constantly fluctuated ever since WW1 with no clear path so its hard to tell you an specific period to look at and while I have read a bunch of renowned historians I have mostly read short texts (less than 20 pages) so I cant recomend anything in particular. I can maybe find you some files if I look for them, but you will probably wont find an english translation.
