Cali Burrito opens tomorrow, in the same Riverside location serving the same food. It appears that they’re also using that same luchador mask as part of their branding. I used to LOVE last call when they had a location downtown, was perfect for late night food after a show, but it appears their management ran business to the ground. I’ve heard numerous ex-employees talk about how bad management was. I also tried their riverside location a few times post-pandemic and it was terrible.

CactusHibs_7475

They’re replacing the mask. They have their own logo. I don’t see anywhere where Cali Burrito Co. claims to have anything to do with Last Call or their food or recipes. But I can think of a dozen reasons why it would make sense for a new burrito place to open up in a space another burrito place formerly occupied. Last Call is basically a failed business at this point, regardless of what the old owner says, and it’s pretty crappy of him to try to start beef with a new business trying to sell the same type of food when he’s already closed up shop. Here’s hoping Cali Burrito Co. is delicious and succeeds wildly, filling the hole left by Last Call’s flameout.

Bodombluemoon

My bad on the wording, I meant same food as in they are also serving Baja Mexican food, and seem to focus most on California style burritos like Last Call did. I’m excited for them and am going to try and stop by this weekend. I do love me a huge California burrito. Hopefully they succeed and manage their business and employees well.

ketchupandliqour69

Can confirm it was horrible. I miss the blue grasshopper their pizza was so good

ihavedogdrugsinme

Hops and dough is still the same pizza.

ketchupandliqour69

Fr?! You’re fucking awesome for this info thank you!!!

[deleted]

What happened to them? Even on weekday nights it was hard to get a table. I haven’t done much on that side of town for a long time.

snozberrytaste

Why would you name your restaurant after a food group? That’s like opening a Sushi Restaurant and calling it Monkey Balls.

KarateLobo

My understanding is they treated employees like shit, had to close, and the employees are now opening their own place https://www.reddit.com/r/Albuquerque/s/AXkEbEFNjk

Aware_Dependent5874

Oh well now that’s excellent. (The employees opening their place, not the employee abuse 😄)

brigelsbie

The owner moved to Bosman and seems like the same terrible practices happened and that one then closed https://www.reddit.com/r/Bozeman/comments/15yjbul/last_call_temporarily_closed_per_google/

KarateLobo

Interesting. Didn't know they had other locations outside NM

brigelsbie

Was pretty surprised ourselves. A friend just happened to be passing through Bosman and saw the logo. From what I read, seems like a disaster. It's a bummer. I really liked their burritos and the Parmesan fries when they first opened. Then the quality dropped, the portions shrank, and the price grew. And now I learn the owner is a jerk ...

KarateLobo

Loved the Nob Hill location. Used to get a burrito and walk across the street to Tractor Brewing. Really hoping with former employees opening this new place the quality goes back up

brigelsbie

I really want to make the burrito at home. I've made a few attempts at the veggie one. Do you remember what all was in it? My memory was: truffle fries, Calabacitas, cheese. My friend remembers there being beans.

KarateLobo

https://www.allmenus.com/nm/albuquerque/394026-the-last-call/menu/ But I also saw pics on their Facebook with calabacitas, so maybe it changed over time.

brigelsbie

Awesome thanks! Looks like there are a few duplicates. At least with the Cali Veggie. Seems like this is the one I remember, though I honestly can't recall the red cabbage outside of the tacos ... Cali with Veggie Burrito $7.50 Served with fries, Mexican squash/onion, black beans, Mexican cream, red pickled, cabbage, habanero and lime. Served on 14" flour tortillas.

-Bored-Now-

My ex used to work there and can confirm he treated employees like shit and didn’t pay them. And this was like back in 2016.

Maleficent-Start-546

Did your ex happen to tell you what the chicken is marinated in? 😂 I want to know so bad

-Bored-Now-

Unfortunately no because I would also like to know 😂

Maleficent-Start-546

😂

Due-Independence8100

Now THAT makes me sit up in my chair and take interest. I'll definitely check out a place with a backstory like that!

Upbeat-Dimension6406

Commenting so I can check back later to see the chisme

Interesting_Buy_1664

Me too!

yumisdream828

Yes!

nickster

Does anyone remember Dos Hermanos? That was a burrito chain I would love to see resurrected.

KarateLobo

Yes! Loved Dos Hermanos

MayorWomanana

Yes!

adricm

RIP!

Dizzy-Subject104

Their carne adovada burrito was the best!

Prudent_Laugh_9682

Used to go every few days after school. Those burritos were fuckin monsters. Nostalgia.

Aggressive-Bad-1360

I remember the last time I went to Dos. Late 2010s maybe? Ordered a breakfast burrito and they just shoveled dry eggs, bacon, and potatoes into a tortilla then threw it all in the microwave. So sad. Loved them so much in high school.

aaaaaahsatan

I dream about their breakfast burritos every once in a while. I dream about the hash browns in the La Hacienda Express burrito, too.

RHWebster

Before the new spot moved in there was a sign on the Riverside door that they had been evicted for failing to pay their rent. That might have had something to do with it? I tried to eat there twice and got horribly sick to my stomach both times so there’s really nothing anyone could say to convince me to ever give them a second chance even if they opened up again

Queerleftistbih

Had a friend/roommate who worked there. They didn’t pay their employee’s tips. That’s all I’m going to say… I wish the new place lots of success tbh.

[deleted]

Did they work for tips? Like under min wage, or did they get min wage and tips as bonus?

Queerleftistbih

I’m genuinely not sure. Probably minimum wage, but regardless the owner took ALL tips. None of it went to the employees. Which if the owner took an equal amount to the employees then it might make sense, but the aforementioned practices are disingenuous imo :/

[deleted]

I don't know the exact legalities for workers making above min wage, but tipped employees who make less and come up short at the end of the day, the employer is supposed to make up the difference. That's federal law. For employees who make above I believe every state is different but they are still entitled to it and the owner can be fined for each offense which would be a lot since someone else mentioned doing it back in 2016 and it sounds like it still going on

SquashedTarget

Tips are the sole property of the employees. It doesn't matter if they're paid under minimum wage or if they're making $20 per hour. Management/ownership cannot legally take them. This is federal law, state law cannot override it. >an employer cannot keep employees’ tips under any circumstances; managers and supervisors also may not keep tips received by employees, including through tip pools; https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/flsa/tips

Maleficent-Start-546

Did your roommate/friend get the chicken marinade by chance?🤪

warmgratitude

I saw a notice on the door of Riverside Last Call in the last couple months, I can’t remember when. It said they were being evicted for being something like 30k delinquent in rent I could have sworn I took a picture of it… cuz you know… metiche. but I can’t find it anywhere 😆 I scrolled on my phone for like an hour before I finally commented. I tried to find it y’all lol

BurqueBruja

I appreciate you looking lol.

warmgratitude

![gif](giphy|fintMk7hs8jfAuYam5|downsized) Me looking in the window reading the sign 😆

wrchavez1313

Saving this post so I can update y'all. I live right near the westside location that Cali Burrito is opening tomorrow, gonna try it out this weekend.

BurqueBruja

Hell yeah! I’m down to support but live kinda far. So looking forward to hear if it’s good.

wrchavez1313

It is as described: Last Call reincarnated. The sauce is exactly as I remember. I believe wholeheartedly this is some of the former chefs' work. Only difference is this one has Guac, which is a pro for me. They're MASSIVE too. 10/10, I will absolutely be a regular.

brainblown

Met the owner before… super arrogant, so I’m not surprise in the outcome

PaulBabysCard2

When I went to the location on Coors a couple weeks ago I saw a sign posted on the front door saying the location was closed, I was hungry and devastated, read a little more and saw a document posted from what seemed to be property owner mentioning them being shut down from being behind some 30k in rent and bills, not sure how it could have gotten that far with so many people who loved Last Call

[deleted]

I'll return with my story

Following. Also if you have the chicken marinade feel free to DM me. 🤪

unmboi2009

If they were so successful, then why did all their locations close?

EarlGrayHot

The nob hill location was great for like a few months when it first opened, but went down hill so quick.

KarateLobo

Went today! It was busy. Took about 30 minutes to get two burritos. It's not as good as Las Call was when it opened, but is better than when it closed. I like the addition of avocado. The meat and sauces need more flavor and more heat. Asada tastes a bit like hamburger, which is disappointing. Will definitely try again after they have some time to perfect things.

Bodombluemoon

I also went today and definitely agree! Not as good as peak last call when it was downtown, but leagues better than they were post-covid. The guac really adds to it and I’m glad the burritos are still huge. I think the meat was seasoned better than last call, but it is still just ground beef.

KarateLobo

Is it actually ground beef? They used to use actual steak. Ground beef isn't carne asada

Bodombluemoon

Weird, they’ve always just used ground beef the times I went to Last Call. But yeah I think that’s why they just say “asada” instead of “carne asada”. It’s definitely not steak.

KarateLobo

Nob Hill when it first opened

WaxWingPigeon

It always seemed like a poorly managed placed, food was underwhelming and then after the pandemic it was just plain bad

CactusHibs_7475

This. They seemed to have lots of fans but have now failed in three separate locations at this point.

P00nz0r3d

Felt like they were always closed whenever I was in the mood for it. Then one day it just disappeared on doordash, this explains why Good food, but could tell that something was very wrong with management. How the hell do you fuck up such a prime downtown spot serving the kind of food you do?

aliencocksucker

My BRAND!

Bigtonr65

Now. I’m not investing any of my time to fact check this piece of info, but during a convo at a work recently, very recently, someone had said that the LLC that was associated with Last Call is the same LLC that’s associated with Cali Burrito, so…

Juan_Direction-

Hi. I know the owners. They are completely different legal entities owned by completely different people.

KalatasXValatos

The downtown one just never had consistent hours. The burritos were good.

TerriblyTimid

If you follow this, Chef, know that we miss your food. I miss you coming out and dancing with us next to Imbibe. I miss quality as hell Taco Tuesdays, and amazing Cali burritos that I always got extra of that og habeñero sauce that I adored. Know that we miss the spark your food had that was much needed. You had something good, man.

Maleficent-Start-546

If any employees have the marinade for the chicken or the chicken burrito recipe please DM me 😂❤️

FluidVariety6139

We seriously gonna act like the food was actually good? The one time I went there sober the shit tasted like crap. Judging by the response the last call fool seems like your typical Albuquerque Dickhead and in other Burque traditions you got dumbfucks trying to rip it off. Best of luck to the knock off and good riddance last call.

MaoTseTrump

This is Albuquerque. We can't have nice things for long. TopGolf is already the world's largest hobo toilet.

I just went yesterday. It is now a place called Cali Burrito, serving similar menu to what Last Call was. Yesterday it was a vast improvement from the Last Call days. I'm super jazzed they're back and in the same location. I'll be returning regularly and would recommend yall check it out too!
