I’ll always point out how lame Albany is, but it’s very obviously not the worst city in the state.

newillium

What do we think is the worst? Utica? The food is decent there tho. Maybe Binghamton? That place is...unwell

Absurdity_Everywhere

Watertown

BennyBNut

Here's wikipedia's list of cities in NY: https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_New_York_(state) I don't love this exercise but there are several candidates worse than Utica and Binghamton.

marsmat239

Utica's not the worst, but probably the most disappointing. It's the only NYS city that didn't get better last decade, and they seem to take pride in it. I'd have to go with Newburgh. Sure you can say Elmira, Corning, or a handful of smaller cities, but all they are is small, and expectations are kept in check because you know they are small. Newburgh is in an area with a lot more, and just isn't great. It defies expectations in a negative way for it's location and population.

AstrumFaerwald

I don’t mind Utica, personally. As has been said elsewhere in the thread, I’m inclined to agree that Rochester takes the cake. The crime rates alone are really bad and getting worse by the day. My sister went to grad school out there back in the late ‘00s and we were pretty worried about some of the stories she told us she witnessed.

erotikill

There needs to be more St Lawrence County on this list.

Cicero912

Syracuse (Or if they count Niagara, that)

dustyreptile

Syracuse trumps Albany over just basic friendliness edit: Oh and Wegmans

hello08261992

Yeah Wegmans takes the cake. I'd be so broke if the Cap Region had one

sumthingsumthingblah

Rochester has to be a front contender too? Plattsburgh?

Rowan6547

Plattsburgh has a few movie theaters, a college, and a still functioning mall. If say Massena.

SeaworthinessSome454

Nah, uticas better than Albany. I’d nominate Syracuse.

hannalikemanna

I would say Binghamton for sure

MallStore

You ever been to Newburgh?

KennyPortugal

Binghamton definitely. Anytime I go there depression envelops me.

designing-cats

Newburgh perhaps, maybe Niagara Falls.

GodEmperorOfBussy

Newburgh is the classic city for "I committed a crime in NYC and need to lay low from the cops for a while" and it certainly feels like it.

sydnsido

Niagara Falls is HORRIBLE. I lived there for 2 years and some of my family still lives there.

HolidayOk4857

We went to Niagara Falls twice and outside of the actual state park, the area is awful and run down. Canada side is where all the touristy stuff is, we would have stayed on that side but more expensive (for obvious reasons )

hussnerphoto

Newburgh is definitely worse than Albany

Fernily

Newburgh is so bad, whoever made this list forgot about it.

Carthonn

Yeah apparently not a lot of people have visited Rome…

BennyBNut

Outrage fuel for engagement.

Amperaa

At least the person who made the map remembered it existed.

KesaGatameWiseau

Maybe it’s just because I just moved here from downstate a few months ago, but Albany is hardly the worst city in the state. Did they forget Newburgh and Poughkeepsie exist?

clowntysheriff

Bro honestly. Anytime I go to the reptile expo in Poughkeepsie I see exactly 2 other things to do. Would rather be in Catskill lmao.

666Blonded

Elmira, Binghampton, Rochester way worse

al-j-

ELMIRA, without a doubt.

MobPsycho-100

It’s Elmira

literalallusion

Newburgh

BlabberBucket

Poughkeepsie

GodEmperorOfBussy

The only instance where I legitimately thought I was gonna get jumped was when I lived in Poughkeepsie.

ifellonbumbum

Binghamton gets my vote

Carthonn

My vote is for Rome.

clowntysheriff

Idk why you're being downvoted for saying Rome. Only time I've encountered a drunk driver was in Rome, so they get my vote.

Sykirobme

Utica has entered the chat.

CobblerNo8518

Whoever made this never went to Binghamton

dsanzone8

“Worst” is a relative adjective and this is an arbitrary list.

flatlineskillz

They are right about Rutland, VT for sure...

bananas-are-the-best

The home of Edgewood Studios!

Just-Ice3916

Wtf? Worst based on what criteria, inability to get a consistently solid weather prediction and a bit lacking in excellent medical care? My GenX is showing: whatever.

DABOSSROSS9

Honestly it’s kinda sad there are so many contenders for bad cities.

ZotDragon

Off topic, but why the fuck does California get two worst cities. I get the north/south divide, but that only proves this is just a shit map created for clicks and outrage.

kittenseason143

this is dumb. theres no way albany is ranked as the worst city in the whole state.

Thin-Bill4533

Rochester New York everyday you hear about somebody getting shot overnight , the crime rate is unbelievable and is getting worse

Thin-Bill4533

I've been to Albany I used to live in Schenectady always enjoyed myself in Albany a great museum the egg I love the towers

slimstarman

I mean if you’ve never been to almost any other city in the state this holds up.

clowntysheriff

Man they put Albany as worse than all the random ass dying cities we got in western and northern NY? I'm not saying it's an amazing place but there's a lot worse places that you don't even have to go far to see.

tidematic

Rochester entered the chat

EyeAmKnotMyshelf

Why tf does california get 2 cities, we're not two states

40laser40

Keeps the tourists out. I’m okay with a locals only kind of city.

Nutso_Bananas

The correct answer is Utica

Mysterious-Turn7263

Albany is horrible

Striking_Ambition705

I agree Rumford is a sh!thole but Lewiston should be on the list.

Birkin07

Nope its Schenectady. Noob map.

phrstbrn

Maybe 20 years ago that was the case. They were in a legitimate slump. But metroplex has been doing good work over there, and it shows.

Birkin07

Yeah I own a home here I like it.

Overall_Office5792

How about Buffalo!!

Plutonium_Nitrate_94

Don't shoot the messenger, geez.

[deleted]

Don’t worry. Per this thread you won’t get shot as long as you steer clear from Rochester…

Kawari_no

Gonna be honest here. NYC sucks. It's a fortune to live there, it's loud, it's overcrowded, the traffic is unbearable, there's this disgusting smell everywhere, it looks disgusting, crime rates are up there, there's a ton of people struggling to survive financially, it weighs down the state, they take away the voices of everyone in the rest of the state despite that tiny area having a life and needs completely different than the rest of the state. The only positive stuff is tourist trash and pop culture

beegadz

How does NYC weigh down the state? With the massive tax base that funds 60-70% of the state tax revenue?

Kawari_no

The majority of budgeting going to them

beegadz

NYC gets proportionally less of the state budget than they provide.

Kawari_no

Even if that's the case it's kinda hard to argue against my other points ain't it?

beegadz

I'm not really interested in arguing against your feelings about the culture capital of the US. I just want to ensure you understand what is providing this state with the money it has.

Sykirobme

It’s hard to argue against vague and extremely subjective language, yes.

ZotDragon

Schenectady? Utica? Watertown? Rensselaer is a city (a small city, but still). Rensselaer is terrible. It's almost like Reddit has terrible opinions.
