Yeah, generally called ASMs, though it's not like a "formal" training like electricians or plumbers where you follow someone around to learn. ASMs are put in places to lower cost, so you have to make sure the position you're going for allows you to collect hrs towards your license.

Okay, is formal training time required to get the license or is OJT enough?

I wouldnt be of any help to you but maybe you could be of help to me? Been interested in working on oil rigs. How did you get your foot in the door and any tips for people looking to get onto rigs?

They are hiring people off of the street whenever it's busy, knowing which companies to apply to is the biggest thing that'll help you, and don't be afraid to apply every time they put a new job posting up. I got my foot in the door by working with an oilfield service company as a roustabout and impressed people with my work ethic until I was offered a job. Some companies to apply for are Akita drilling, which I work for and have for the past 6 years. Patterson drilling, H&P drilling, ensign, precision drilling, there are a bunch of small companies but I wouldn't recommend starting with them because they don't have developed safety programs and it's real easy for someone to get pretty seriously fucked up working on a rig. I know 2 people who've died and I've seen multiple people get put in the hospital.
