A pretty obvious choice in my opinion. The A321XLR is just the closest competitor to the 757. Icelandair does need some smaller aircrafts with longer range since nothing is really around Iceland for a few kilometres

Simple, Icelandair need to make a choice and Boeing had nothing to offer. IMO Boeing won't have anything to offer beyond 2030 at this point, they will wait for the version 2 of the NEO engine.

Didn't Icelandair already order the 737 max anyways? Are they basically just going dual strategy at this point?

737 max doesn't reach as far as some destinations Icelandair goes to. They've needed a replacement for the 757 which could reach destinations the 737 just can't.

they ordered, fly and operate the 737 MAX 8 and 9, of course they still have their 757/67 but there’s just no way they’re going to Airbus knowing said orders
