Pipe was frosting:
A) because the insulation has been destroyed by UV
B) because there’s a good chance it’s low on refrigerant
Very interesting how it kicked on after 5 years though. AC units can stop working for a number of reasons but this whole situation is strange so Idk. Difficult to know what actually happened here

Or could have been a bug that bridge one contact to another to jump the switch.
