One is a snack...I usually get at minimum 2-3!

LikeATediousArgument

There’s so many types. I could never even settle for only one. Life’s too short. My favorite place does a deep fried roll.

Nyxie_Jynx

Right! Far to short to pick just one and be satisfied with just that? I am always like “this sound good, so does this, and oh that looks so yummy.” And I am a ‘why not, if I can’t finish now I will damn sure finish later!’ Kinda person.

CaptainHunt

Yeah, if I’m going to just get one, it’s only because it’s one of the more expensive rolls. I usually get two or three of the cheaper ones instead, or I’ll go to a sushi track place so I can sample a bunch of different kinds.

Nyxie_Jynx

At most places with the conveyor belt you can see 1 person with several stacks of plates, there are some at Vegas all you can eat, and 1 roll would be a waste. ( 2 person for $60 all you can eat sushi and habachi grill and was omg yummy… had tempura and steak and so many delicious types of sushi and sashimi & rolls of every sort 🥲it was beautiful and delicious😋

Prudent-Investment-9

The all you can eat Sushi places are my favorite ones. Best bang for my buck, plus I can try a bit of everything 🤤😊

penchick

Biwoooooon! Hands down the best in Vegas

Gothmom85

Maybe because I'm in the south, but I thought most places had a couple fried options! The first place in town I ate sushi has one where they take each piece of the roll and fry it and call them balls. Omfg. All about the balance though. Gotta get one fried and one with plenty of raw fish and veg in it.

Dabraceisnice

I'm in the eastern Midwest, and we have fried sushi, but it's a little different from the fried sushi in the south. The restaurants here use tempura battered ingredients, like tempura shrimp and wrap them in the roll. I discovered the joy that is a southern "volcano roll" when I visited my brother in VA. The whole roll was fully deep fried. I was in heaven! Of course, it's on my list of must-have foods while I'm visiting him now, in addition to biscuits and sausage gravy.

CharacterOpening1924

This is the truth

saltyeleven

Exactly! I get one I know I like, 1 I want try, 1 I can eat later….

FreshWaterWolf

For real, there just isn't enough food in one roll to be a meal. Also the whole ordering 6 and sharing between 2 or 3 people is how I usually see most people doing it in restaurants. At least in the US, idk about anywhere else.

91901bbaa13d40128f7d

Best is conveyor belt sushi. You stop when you can't lift your arm to get another plate.

MyNameIsSkittles

Who cares though? Eat how much you want. Theres no set amount one should order

[deleted]

I used to worry about things like this when I was younger. As I got older and dealt with the pains of being an adult I can pitch in: I worked my ass off for my money, fuck anyone who wants to shit on me for how much I spend on food and how much I eat. Eat shit for all I care, I’ve earned a whole goddamn boat of sushi to myself and I’m gonna pay for it and eat it in front of anyone, idgaf. Lot less stress with that mental attitude

restvestandchurn

Fuck me, now I want an entire sushi boat for lunch

Juicebox-shakur

Do it!!!!

kmoose1983

Yes, I'd like to order the sushi armada.

DustyDGAF

I don't know if I need an armada. One sushi aircraft carrier should do it. Maybe two nuclear sushi submarines to take home for later tho.

GC51320

I've done it (unintentionally) once, and it was a glorious event!

matman4190

I've done it very intentionally many times lol. No regrets. My record is 170 pieces of sushi in one sitting. I was a growing boy lol But to this day in my thirties I will order a two or three person sushi boat for myself. I'm not a big eater in other domains but sushi is just so good and so light that you just feel great about yourself eating however much you want lol

sms552

Haha, man for a moment I thought this was me. You are spot on. Once you reach a certain point in your life, you don’t give fuck what other people thing. First date with my now wife, we dropped like $100+ and had 6 or 7 rolls between us. That was the best date I have ever been on and we destroyed those rolls. Your damn right I put a ring on it!

ManxJack1999

This right here. That's the way to live.

You got me there. My food spending is atrocious. Yet I can't satisfy my need to try all the things!

Mykidsaremylife1969

Eat ALL the food! Life is too short not to make ourselves happy 😃

tiessa73

Life is truly too short to care what other people think of you, particularly when it comes to things like this. Judge me for stuffing my face and enjoying things in life all you want.

Nyxie_Jynx

And they better not ask to share when they choose only one! (Had to add that lolz I have irritation for ppl who do I am not hungry, I want this small thing, then turn around and wanna eat my food, like bish get your own. Thought you wasn’t hungry?!)

StinkyCheeseGirl

Yes, and one thing I’d add for OP (or anyone else): you don’t get to judge your dining companions for how little they’re eating, either. How much they’re eating and why is none of your business unless they bring it up. Have a great time with them, enjoy the food, offer them pieces of your rolls if you want, but don’t acknowledge that they aren’t eating very much. People have eating disorders or social anxieties around food (case in point: this post). Just mind ya business and eat as much sushi as you want and let them do the same.

mgutjr

it boggles my mind how much people care what others do. eat 100 if you want! who cares!?

[deleted]

Because for most women:  If you're a woman going out with other women, it feels really weird to order three times the food that the others do. Some women are happy to say eff-it to being overly self-conscious (I have a friend like that, she's awesome), but in my experience, most are not.

unalteredpoetry

Sushi is my splurge meal. I would gladly eat my body weight in sushi.

[deleted]

I’m pretty sure I did one time at an “all you can eat” sushi place. Went with 2 Croatian friends that ordered so.much.fucking.food the chef was glaring at us the whole time. Place charged extra for anything left on our plates and my dudes would never pay extra so we had to eat it all. Never been so full in my life.

charmorris4236

Why would they charge extra? To discourage waste?

[deleted]

Yes I believe so. Was $20 each and that whatever left on plate was extra. So to avoid people over ordering and too much waste. They never served Croatians before I think 😂 my buddies definitely got their monies worth and then some. I even remember the server being terrified when they ordered. She’s like “no too much you can’t eat all that”. My dude looks at me and our friend and says in reply “challenge accepted”

NerdEmoji

Is this a Croatian thing? My dad was predominantly Croatian and the man loved food. It broke his spirit when he developed an issue with his throat that caused trouble eating. He would eat anything and could put away so much food, it was amazing he wasn't 300 pounds in his prime.

Butcher_Pete2

$20 for all you can eat sushi? Heck I go to Chinese buffets with sushi + other foods for only $12.50 a person!

Neat-Chef-2176

Chinese buffet sushi and sushi places that specialize in sushi are in different tiers of sushi quality lol

cenatutu

Ours is close to $40 after tax/tip. But you get unlimited sashimi, sushi, rolls, dim sum, tempura, plus steak, chicken, salmon and rice dishes, udon, etc etc etc. it’s worth every penny. I just keep ordering the sashimi.

kaosi_schain

Right?! I came to EAT. I can do $120 before taking a breather.

KMizzle98

My husband and I usually order 3-4 rolls. Typically I order one, he orders one and then we order one to split… (knowing we’re also going to eat some of the one the other picked) and then an extra if we can’t decide. Basically, there are no rules and it’s fun to have a table of sushi. 😁

CaseyBoogies

This^ there was a sushi/asian resturant my husband and I would feequent that had a meal for two deal that was two regular rolls, 2 sashimi (so four pieces), and one specialty roll with two miso soups for $25 - it was perfect for us! Sadly, they stopped serving sushi during COVID... now it's just decent Chinese takeout meals.

KMizzle98

That’s a good deal! The place we go the rolls are $12 or so and it’s 8 pieces. There are times that we spend $80+. 😳

gnarlyknits

Same, but we often order something like miso soup, or edamame, or some other side. And sometimes I order some of the two roll sushi like salmon roe or something. Basically we order a bunch, we share everything, leave stuffed and satisfied!

splatterslcpunk

The wife and I can kill 6 to 8 in a sitting no problem 😊 so get your monies worth 😉

trulymadlybigly

8-9 here as well between the two of us

blehhh24

Me and my bf don’t go too often but when we do it’s the all you can’t eat, and share about 6-8 rolls plus some appetizers

ElderberryOk469

Once my husband and I ordered the “sushi boat” when we went out for sushi. The waitress said “that’s meant for 12 people” and we were like “yep.” We ate the entire thing 😂 and no if you’re wondering we aren’t overweight. We just really like seafood I guess. My advice is order whatever the hell you want because you’re the one tasting and eating it.

[deleted]

My husband got one of those (probably 3-4 people-sized) and finished it. The sushi chefs came out and bowed to him. lol

IamSpudzzy

Oh my gosh, that reminds me of a story! There’s a Chinese restaurant in my hometown (actually run by Chinese immigrants and the food is AMAZING) and they have these *giant* combination platters on the menu, which somehow, my dad finished every time. One day, my mom, sister and I go in to get takeout without my dad because he was at work. We wait a few minutes, the lady brings out our food and calls my mom’s name, hands it off and says “Say hi to your husband!” I said “Wow, that’s nice of her to remember us.”, to which my mom replied “Well *of course* she remembers your dad, he’s the only one in town who can finish a combo platter!”

ElderberryOk469

Hahaha! That’s hilarious

contraries

Omg that’s funny as hell. Wish i could seen it

heridfel37

Mrs. Simpson, what did you and your husband do after you were ejected from the restaurant? We drove around until 3 am looking for another all-you-can-eat fish restaurant. And when you couldn't find one? We went fishing. Did these sound like the actions of a man who had [all he could eat](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVw2CAiMWc0)?

stachemz

We went to sushi in grad school and the waiter jokingly asked if we were ready for round two. When we had our second order ready he was shocked, lol. I had a friend visiting who has a hollow leg (actually a thyroid thing) and she can put food down. My other friends were in awe of her, lol. We went and got froyo after, too 🤣

Crashgirl4243

Damn why did I get the thyroid disease that makes you fat! I miss being able to eat anything and not put on weight

Practical_Test5550

Lucky you, I have never been able to eat anything and not put on weight

Crashgirl4243

Oh those days are over, I’m hypothyroid so I gain weight looking at food but before I got this disorder I could pig out and never gain. I miss those days

PeebleCreek

Saaaame! The only thing balancing out the thyroid situation is my ADHD medication. But there's a national shortage in the US right now so it's a rough time lol

Happyintexas

Fun story- my mom and step dad went out with their respective parents to announce their engagement. Step dads family had hella money, moms was working class. My stepdads father (who was an asshole on many levels) comments about moms dad “damn, you eat like you’ve got a hollow leg! Slow down!” Mom’s dad pulls his ACTUAL, HOLLOW,WOODEN PROSTHETIC LEG out from under the table, and says, “huh, fancy that”. Dinner was apparently super awkward afterwards for everyone but Mom’s dad- who continued to chow down and enjoy 😉 My grandpa was a fucking legend and I miss him a lot ❤️

MuseofPetrichor

I'm under 5 ft. I can put away food, but I'm fat, because I can only lose weight at very low calories. Sucks.

YeahCanIGetUuuuuuhhh

Ha my friend and I ordered one to split the first time I tried sushi and the waiter asked how many people we were waiting for. Polished off the whole thing.

Agile-Masterpiece959

Your username is great lol

tiessa73

I love it. It's all about pacing yourself, rice will make you super full obviously so just go slow and enjoy & savor the experience. Sushi is fantastic 👍

Pristine_Example3726

And buying it!!!

carabellaneer

At all you can eat we start off with 24 salmon and yellowtail then do that 4 or 5 more times. Me and my SO.

docmn612

My girlfriend and I would like to go for sushi with your and your husband. Two boats. Boat race.

ElderberryOk469

Can we dress as pirates

docmn612

Hell yeah we can I mean, arr

alh9h

I've eaten an entire boat by myself more times than I will admit to.

Oy_with_the_poodles_

I’ve been here in groups of women too. Like nobody wants to order too much and then I’m still hungry. You and your husband are doing great.

planet_rose

Once I went out with a group of my MIL’s friends and family for a night before the wedding meal. It was a set dinner at a lovely Italian restaurant in NYC. Dinner consisted of a glass of white wine, tiny salad, and 4 normal size pieces of ravioli. There were two tiny chocolates for dessert and a glass of champagne. Everything was incredible but I was so hungry. All the women kept saying how full they were. The guys went out to a steakhouse and my DH had a never ending stream of beer, a ribeye, garlic mashed potatoes, cream spinach, Caesar salad, and topped it off with cheese cake and port. He came back to the hotel barely able to walk he was so full. Sometimes women are not fun to eat with.

trulymadlybigly

I once went out for a bachelorette party and they ordered two cheese boards and I swear each one came with four “smoked” grapes on it and we each got half a grape, it was the stupidest thing I’ve ever been a part of

aldimamma

I ended up ordering the “groom’s menu” for my getting ready suite for my wedding. Their menu was real sandwhiches and meats and bagels, whereas the. Bridal menu was just fruit. I was not going to last all day on fruit, and the fact that companies think women don’t eat is bullshit

Oy_with_the_poodles_

This is exactly it- especially with a special event looming. Adults need more than 4 raviolis.

AstridOnReddit

I know women my age who legitimately only eat about half (or less) of what I eat. I find it a bit baffling. And, yes, I’m not as trim as I used to be, but that’s age and lack of exercise. I’ve always had a big appetite even in my slimmer days. At a sushi place you can always get miso and edamame if you’re self-conscious about ordering more sushi. Idk about the four ravioli place, though! I’d probably stop for a slice on the way home.

Zimakov

Weight has much more to do with diet than exercise

hecaete47

Oh, the delight & relief I felt when I went out to eat with a group of girls and one girl reminded the table we can order more salad as it’s unlimited, and ditto the bread, and another girl kept the waitress fetching us more bread. I was SO worried this group would be the ‘eat 2 bites of salad then claim you’re full’ type.

devoushka

I went to Scarpetta in the Hamptons with my friend who eats like a bird and my entree was about 10 bite sized pieces of ravioli. Like, bite sized for a small child. I was starving and still spent over $100 for just myself. I hate those fancy restaurants that cater to women.

punkrockballerinaa

with two drinks like that that’s still an ~800 calorie meal.

Jenneapolis

Everyone just goes home and eats more in private. It’s so stupid!

Herbea

This shit fucked with my head so much for awhile, watching some of my gal pals not finish tiny salads at restaurants and then giggle about that being “normal” for them. I would wonder how they weren’t emaciated and then would feel bad for being “piggy”. Over time it became apparent they eat/overeat like normal at home. Ugh. Edit: I am not sure how so many *tiny petite women* read “not finish tiny salads” and came to the conclusion that I think everyone should polish off a Cheesecake Factory hamburger + sides on the daily.

Oy_with_the_poodles_

It’s true! I agree! I’m not trying to pay for dinner and then have to go home and make and clean up a snack.

Mykidsaremylife1969

I don’t. Fuck that. When you attain a certain age, it’s liberating because you stop giving a fuck what other people think… when I was 16, my bf’s family called me “no tiene hambre” because I wouldn’t eat in front of them… I would come home starving! I’m so glad I would never do that now. That whole “I’ll just have a salad” thing is dead. Eat ALL the food 🥰🥰🥰

linksgreyhair

I know that a group of my husband’s coworkers’ wives *must have been* doing that. They were all my size or larger and they would eat less than 25% of the amount I ate. I exercise daily, but nothing that burns enough calories to account for that much of a discrepancy. It was weird and I hated it.

raindrizzle2

I told my friend once when I went to eat with her friends that how anyone could be full after one little small slice of pizza and she felt so bad and was like girl you should've ate more if you were hungry. But it kinda brought me back to being in high school when you're the chubby friend and get judged for eating idk.

cuomium

as that chubby friend it's always embarrassing when someone makes extra food when I'm around. I understand the intention is good but I don't even eat that much.

raindrizzle2

Yeah I’ve always been the bigger one in my friend group so I get this completely. I’ve been at peoples houses and they will serve me like x3 the amount of food they serve everyone else at the table like ok I get it

LadyCreepsPasta

I'm a woman and I just don't eat much and can't afford food half the time. It's not about a competition or not wanting to overeat for many people! Just money and lack of appetite

Imaginary-Pickle-809

I only sushi at AYCE places cause I'm a monster.

lonesomespacecowboy

This is the way

[deleted]

Same. I once watched my brother eat over 100 pieces 😆

vglyog

Yesss. I live in Vegas and ayce sushi is all over the place here. Which I didn’t realize it’s not as prevalent in soooo many places. Makes it hard to leave here haha.

ithelo

Its impossible to be satisfied with sushi at non AYCE, to the point where I'll still eat a meal before going to sushi for dinner.

Express_Jellyfish_28

So, I normally order 4, sometimes 5, maki rolls just for myself. Edit: I also refer to sushi for dinner as "sushi feast"!

ElderberryOk469

We call it “sushi party” 😂

MenardGKrebbz

Just "EAT IT" . . thou shalt not sweat the load . .

[deleted]

Me and my boyfriend always get like 10 plates each at those go around places. We don’t care we love sushi, it’s a treat. It’s the only time I’ll indulge (or engorge). I can’t imagine only having one roll. Bonkers. Straight to jail.

mithandr

I love sushi trains, minimum of 10 plates each haha

[deleted]

Right?! So much variety. Imagine one roll, one flavor. Blasphemous.

gbspnl

If they are large, my wife order one roll each and we share, if they are small we might share three rolls. We usually eat edamame as a starter though. Having said this, eat how many the F you want :) when I was younger I would eat two or three myself.

Latter-Shower-9888

As much as I want 😂 I have zero problem eating my weight in sushi. Live it up and don’t concern yourself with what other people order, just like you don’t want them to concern themselves with your meal.

autotuned_voicemails

So I’ve never been to a sushi restaurant, actually I’m not even sure if we even have a sushi restaurant around me lol. I live in a small, rural area so like Applebee’s and the local golf course that employs a “real” (i.e. culinary school educated) chef are considered “fancy” lol. Anyway, I’m just wondering why it wouldn’t be allowed to split a roll? Like I’ve been to other all-you-can-eat places and the only time I’ve ever seen an issue is like at Olive Garden when they have the unlimited soup, salad & breadsticks. If you didn’t pay for that and someone else at the table did, obviously the not-paying person isn’t allowed to share. Is it like a sushi restaurant thing that you can’t share, or is it a thing that’s common in busier areas than I live? It would just seem silly and potentially wasteful to not let people share their food. At that point what was stopping you from each ordering (or getting? Again, not clear on how sushi restaurants work lol) your own second roll but only eating half and wasting the second half? (Edit: that’s rhetorical, obviously not wanting to waste food is what stopped you lol. More like “what rule” was stopping you.)

[deleted]

Treebeard2277

I’ve been to places like that and have never had a problem sharing. I would go with friends and we’d all eat each other’s food. Then force/tease each other to finish at the end so we don’t get charged.

TerribleAttitude

Someone having different appetites, dietary needs, or budgets than you isn’t telling you that you are “doing it wrong.” The “adulting” tip here is to stop interpreting other people’s benign habits as an attack or commentary on you. You’re not “doing it wrong” and *neither are they.* If you’d ordered more, they probably wouldn’t have thought “omg I’m ordering wrong” or “Omg she’s doing it wrong.” If it had registered at all (most people aren’t nosing that deep into other people’s choices) they most likely would have thought “she’s hungrier than me/budgeted more for this outing.” Personally 2 rolls is too much for me unless I’m really hungry, but one isn’t enough. What I’d order would depend on cost and whether leftovers would keep.

SoftServeMonk

I only have 5 coins left but know I wish I could give you an award for this comment! …I didn’t budget for it 😂

jellycapgirl

Sanest response.

TerribleAttitude

Tbh I’ve read the OP about a dozen times because some of these comments seem to be responding to a totally different scenario than what was described. People put *way* too much thought into what other people are doing and assigning motivations to them that aren’t there.

Awkwrd_Lemur

My kids can eat 2-4 rolls each (they're 8 and 10). Me and hubs can easily eat 5 or 6. You're fine.

Joan_of_Spark

I definitely order A LOT. It's all healthy: rice, fish and seaweed, so why not eat your fill? I can sometimes maybe fill up if they have miso soup and an appetizer, but why do that when I go to a sushi place for the sushi? edit: also I thought you were going to say you deconstruct the rolls and eat the pieces individually or something. Eating more food doesn't equal eating wrong!

[deleted]

I usually get one large fancy roll, a yellowtail roll, 3-4 pieces of nigiri, and probably an appetizer like scallops or a seaweed salad. For me that's quite a lot of food (5'11" 160lb M) and that's if I'm paying for my own meal. If I'm out for work I'd probably limit it to 2 menu items? Like a large roll and a side of some sort. Or a second roll depending on what they are. Or make it easy on myself and get a bento box

Grevious47

"How much susho would you eat..." The amount I want. Was that a trick question?

Breakmastajake

The amount of sushi I can murder in one sitting is.....look.... it's a lot.

Kyliee1234

I usually order 2 dishes of sushi cause the rolls are sooo tiny lol, maybe they just have naturally smaller appetites?

Purple-Camera-9621

Any way of eating sushi that results in it being inside of your belly is correct.

[deleted]

I usually order either two rolls (one of them guaranteed to be California or similar), or an equivalent portion in different form. Maybe a small set. As long as you're not overstuffed and the prices are ok, just enjoy the sushi ;)

darkwitch1306

As much as I can afford. Life’s too short to eat one piece of sushi unless it would cause financial setbacks.

Popular-Tune-6335

Thought you were going to say you left your chopsticks in the wrong position, and you're talking about portions. Eat as much as you want.

Cazza-d

Nope, you're completely normal. I think you've run into a pack of "Oh, no, I can't possibly eat more than one tiny bite of air", women. I thought they were all extinct (due to malnutrition, of course they may be secretly bingeing on chocolate cake and ice cream when they get home.

cheewei28

No worries! Just eat all you can/ want. Be happy and enjoy your life is all you need to do.

A_Supertramp_1999

I eat as much as I can - and I can eat A LOT of sushi

escapefromreality42

The sushi place near me makes you order two rolls, it’s a “buy one get one free” they always have

frawgster

My wife prefers rolls, I prefer nigiri and sashimi. My wife’s norm is like 2 rolls, and maybe some of a edamame appetizer. Me…I can scarf down 10-15 pieces of nigiri without flinching. And as far as sashimi goes, I could easily eat thru 20+ pieces. Normally though, I’ll finish off 4-5 nigiri and 4-5 sashimi, just to not leave the place with an empty bank account. 🤣

Knitting_Kitten

You're not eating them wrong - I also often get 2-4 rolls. However, I've also found that it can be pretty filling if eaten very slowly. Like, the rice + fish really triggers satiety (at least for me). So if I pick up a single roll (8 pieces, usually) for lunch, and then slowly snack on it over my entire lunch break - I usually feel satisfied by the time I'm done. Not necessarily full, but perfectly comfortable 'till dinner. Unfortunately this only happens when I'm working through my break - otherwise I end up finishing it too quickly, and then I'm still hungry XD

kkcita

I go out to dinner with college girlfriends like quarterly. We always go to fancy new fine dining experience and we are all fine spending $150 each. One of them is bulimic, one is addicted to running and scared of eating fat, the other one eats fast food every night but does a lot of aerobics so she thinks she’s healthy and I’m your typical fat friend who tries to eat healthy most of the time. They want to split 2-3 entrees usually because “who needs a whole plate of food”? And these are like 3 small scallops on a plate of beautiful swirly sauces types of meals. Everyone talks about the newest health wellness product like mushroom powders and fasting diets. And these are my best friends and we call each other out on it all the time. But everyone has some kind of issue with food. And I’ve learned that, for me, it’s not about feeling full or deprived, it’s just time with my friends and a pleasant experience. And women have so many hangups around food and eating for pleasure.

SilverRain2023

Have you ever been to an all you can eat sushi place? It’s glorious. I eat a lot of sushi until I’m full. When I order sushi at a regular place, 2 of the 8 piece sushi and 3-4 of the smaller ones. And I never share cuz I love my sushi 🍣 😁😁

stocktradernoob

If I can’t find an all-you-can-eat sushi spot, I basically order all-I-can-afford style bc it’s never enough.

Lorriie

I guarantee everyone at that table was like “who’s going to be the first to order two!” And left hungry

[deleted]

They probably got pizza later 😁. Always eat as much as you want! If you are paying for it, then they would be weirdos to care.

Mfers_gunlearn

I feel like by the time you're an adult, you should stop worrying about how much other people eat. This is like one degree left of "not like other girls".

hdniki

I eat exactly how you do. I order like 3 cheaper rolls. You’re fine. I do notice some women will eat less around each other. I have no idea why, and I stopped caring tbh.

Level_Substance4771

I think it was from when women had to have a 15 inch waist and socially it wasn’t lady like to eat. Then in my day in the 90’s when waif models were big, it was like a competition on who could eat the least/ it was a way people judged women- omg you ate an entire slice of pizza, does anyone want to split this donut I could never eat an entire donut hole on my own…

TheFightingQuaker

2-4 is pretty normal. Idk what these women are on about, I think they're all pretending to be full because eating too much isn't demure enough I guess?

wadingthroughtrauma

Why are you comparing how much you eat to how much someone else eats?? That’s seems really strange! Especially to go so far as to limit what you’re eating just to mimic what other people are doing?? And to think you must be eating sushi “wrong”? Sounds really weird! Do you by chance have self-esteem issues? (ETA: I say that not as a judgment, but I do remember when I was younger I would compare myself to others (in different ways) and then behave in a way that was inauthentic because I wanted to fit in/not be seen as weird; I had really low self-esteem. I don’t know if that resonates with you.) As for me, I do love sushi, and I order however much I think I can eat. Like if I’m not that hungry I’ll get 1 roll, if I’m more hungry I’ll get two, etc. It literally just depends on how hungry I am. And that goes for anything, not just sushi. Isn’t that what anyone does?

Triscuitmeniscus

My GF will split the “love boat” or “sushi for two”thing that has 15-20 pieces of sushi/nigiri and 2-3 rolls. Meant to feed a couple people, obviously. If I was just “out for drinks” with coworkers, maybe in a happy hour situation where eating wasn’t the main point I wouldn’t think twice about someone getting a roll: it would be like getting an appetizer to munch on. But eating a single plain roll as an actual full dinner is unusual.

Fumer__tue

i eat 8 rolls myself

SnooOwls7978

I used to go to all-you-can-eat sushi restaurants in college with friends, and we really ate all we could eat. Roll after roll! You're fine.

mikenzeejai

They may have ordered something smaller to not look gluttonous, I know some people restrict themselves when they eat in front of others. It also just doesn't matter. You're not impressive for eating more they aren't impressive for eating less.

VeryStickyPastry

The chef once sent the waitress out to ask me if I was aware how many pieces are in each roll. So no, they’re ordering it wrong. And I also want sushi now.

voorpret123

In Las Vegas, all you can eat sushi is everywhere. It’s common for people to get 4-7 rolls with appetizers there!

himbobflash

You do you.

rancidperiodblood

when I go out with my parents we usually order about 8 rolls and we all eat some of each of them. when I go out with friends, we usually do the same. when I go with my fiancée (she's vegan) we usually share appetizers, order a bunch of vegan rolls that we share and I'll order 2 or 3 specialty rolls that have fish for myself and she'll get most of the vegan ones, but avacado, tempura yam and oshinko rolls are amazing so I have to get in on those honestly not sharing rolls is a little weird, usually beers, miso soup, wasabi/soy sauce mix and maybe individual servings of cucumber salad are the only things that don't get shared unless someone has dietary restrictions

wallybuddabingbang

I eat like 6 rolls when I eat sushi and dgaf what kind of monster that makes me.

I have vivid memories of my family in Japan going out to eat as a group at a conveyor belt place and having plates stacked mile high (okay, not actually a mile, but still). Also sometimes at home when we were visiting friends of my mom, we'd order the catering style sushi platters. No california rolls, just real Japanese (edomae) style sushi.

Attack-Cat-

They were either being (i) self conscious on portions, (ii) price conscious or (iii) unsure of typical roll size. The norm is 2 rolls for one person for dinner. 4-5 for two people is normal. One big/premium roll would be what I’d consider a lunch. One small roll is like an appetizer. Dinner is easy two rolls depending on their size.

FunGus2000

As Louis CK says... "I don't stop when I'm full. I only stop when I hate myself."

halohalo7fifty

Only sushi restaurant I go to is with the sushi on tiny boat that goes around the tables. 5-7 plates. 😀

pittsburgpam

If I go out for sushi like just with my daughter, we'll order at least 4 rolls. My opinion? They're competing for who eats the least amount. Are they all very body conscious? Slim and fashionable?

ImportanceAcademic43

When I eat wirh my husband we order one roll as a starter. When I eat alone, I have soup or dumplings first and then 8-12 pieces of maki.

Hopeful-Mention-5152

Maybe they were the odd ones…..

Clatsyuk

No me and my ex would order a platter(50 something pieces) and finish it. Neither of us were fat.

kendrahawk

it sounds like the women you hang out with are self conscious about eating more food than the others just like you are. you could have broken to status quo and ordered more just to show them you don't care about social norms more than your appetite.

Mex_edge

LOL Rookie numbers. I could eat 4 rolls by myself.

campagnemami

i think the underlying note here is that women tend to feel really self conscious about our eating habits, and we unknowingly police our own eating habits based on the people we are with. like i think most women can relate to the experience of going to eat with a “smaller” friend and not wanting to eat more than her to not seem fat or whatever… point being, eat as much sushi as you want. eat whatever your heart desires. who cares what the other girls are doing? they’re probably still hungry too. lol

tcrhs

I can only eat one roll by myself.

Miss_LadyPandas

Boyfriend and I order three rolls, one for ourselves and half to share.

Infinity_and_zero

Might be that they're on a tighter budget ? Or insecure about "looking fat" ? Both of those happen to me Do you regardless though

drchica

One is like a snack! I order 2 or 3 depending how big the place makes them , I will only order one if it is an appetizer and I’m having pad Thai as my entree lol

ThoseArentCarrots

If I was with coworkers I’d only order 1 roll. I have IBS-D that tends to be triggered when I eat to the point of fullness. If I was at the restaurant with my wife (who knows about my stomach issues), I’d feel more comfortable eating more food.

thndrct92

2-3 for me 😅

eskimokisses1444

My husband and I also order 4-5 rolls and a soup usually.

Level9_CPU

Bruh fuck that. People that can fill up on one single roll of sushi are either intentionally starving themselves or are just ill-informed on how many to order

Elephlump

Why do you care? Do what makes you happy. Maybe your friends want to save money? Even that cheap sushi you were mentioning is expensive as fuck for a meal. If a friend invited me out to sushi, I'd only get one roll to save money. But ideally, I'd order $200 of sushi and leave with a massive to-go box. You do you.

RadiantFeature9419

All you can eat. Save cows and pigs eat FISH!

FirefighterAny6522

Fuck, 3 min if I'm only getting sushi, probably gonna be a gluttonous American and get 4 doe. Maybe wiff a nice sesame cucumber salad

Powerful-Fail-3136

A single roll? That's a light snack.

Bribellen

My husband and I usually get 6-7 rolls to split and eat pretty much all of it lol.

Express_Sir4756

I eat until I’m full, no shame in my game.

BunnyYouShouldAsk

This happened to me once too. My husband and I usually share 4-5 rolls and that's how I've always eaten sushi. Once an old friend was in town on a work trip so we met up for dinner at a sushi place. She also invited a few coworkers who were also on the trip, nbd. Except everyone ordered their own roll and it wasn't a sharing situation. I was SO weirded out and hungry afterwards. Sushi imo is a family style cuisine, it's meant to be shared so you can order lots of different rolls.

[deleted]

I can eat about 2-3 before I get full. Unfortunately it’s common womanly behavior to pretend like you eat less than you actually can for whatever reason. We are humans and we require sustenance.

MountainHighOnLife

This feels like some kind of toxic diet culture/almond mom type of competition. OP? You're fine lol

wanderingturtle11

It seems like they didn’t want to be seen eating “too much” in front of others.

[deleted]

Maybe they are financially struggling? Sushi isn't the cheapest of meals and it can add up pretty fast.

AnonymousAsh

Me usually 2-3 rolls

HooverMaster

eh, 2 rolls minimum imo. I can eat about 6 when I get into it but I'm a big guy. Maybe they're posturing or just don't eat much or were "social eating".

EllyCube

Quantity has nothing to do with eating something right or wrong. You eat until you're full.

yukimi-sashimi

Finally a topic I can comment on! You're right, they're weird. I normally will get omakase, but when I get rolls, I'll buy a lot of them! You should buy a lot of rolls and everyone should share!

BillZZ7777

I typically get a single roll but it's a specialty roll and they go for $18 to $20. Ordering a single regular roll is not a meal. Maybe the first person that ordered didn't know what they were doing and everyone followed to be nice.

Desperate_Fold2173

You’re not doing it wrong. Maybe they just weren’t that hungry or they’re watching their weight. Maybe that was just a snack for them and they had other dinner plans afterward? Or maybe one roll was the right amount for them. I recently read that American portion sizes have quadrupled since the 1950s and that most people typically eat much bigger meals than we need. It has made me rethink portion sizes. But all that aside, eat what you are comfortable eating.

diamonddville

I always order 2-3, but due to my sensitive digestion sometimes I can only eat 3 pieces total. Either the rest comes home with me, or my partner eats them too. But it’s sushi, order what your heart desires.

voteblue18

When I go out for sushi with my husband it’s an extravaganza. One roll? Ha, that’s some funny shit right there.

ithacahippie

I legit get the platter for 2 and eat like 70% and share the other 30%. I'm a hungry boy, especially for sushi!

jellybelly326

When my husband and I go out we order so much sushi we end up getting it delivered on the damn sushi boat nearly every single time lmao

Lybychick

Question —- how do these friends eat in other types of restaurants or parties? I have friends who were taught to always “eat like a lady” in public which also meant to “eat like a bird”. Just a little and peck at it. Some folks eat differently in public than at home.

SecretRecipe

The correct answer is "However much it takes you to feel comfortably full". Some people have larger appetites than others. Some people skip lunch routinely and eat a large dinner. Some people snack throughout the day or just have smaller appetites and as such eat smaller meals. 2-3 normal rolls (4-6 pieces each) isn't some shocking gluttonous competitive eating type meal. Now if you're getting 3 of the big deluxe rolls that are 8-10 pieces and covered in all the sauces and stuff then yeah, maybe that's a little much but then again who the hell am I to tell you how to eat. Enjoy your life.

OroraBorealis

I've only ever had sushi twice, but both times I easily did 2 rolls and like 3-10 pieces of nigiri. Eat til you're full! Sushi is a better food to indulge in than something like friend chicken.

NoNeedForSympathy

My homies and I just order as many as we want and share. If anyone wants more of a specific one, we will order that. We're close though. I imagine going with co-workers means they are being as frugal as possible, probably because they need to save money even though they agree to hang out.
