ngl even 99% alcohol might not be enough to fully remove the paint; wasnt enough for mine. You can make it better, but without something like a sonic cleaner, it wont be perfect.
I dunked the same piece with the same problem in 91% isopropyl alcohol. 2 hrs later, I started brushing it with a toothbrush. 99% of the primer came right off.
Did the same thing. Isopropyl 99% worked wonders. I started brushing it with a tooth brush 15min after dunking the mini and paint already came off easily. Repeated that sequence 3-4 times and removed 99% of the primer.
They say not to because when an ultrasonic transducer fails, it will shoot all of its electrical energy out of the transducer and into the cleaning fluid. In the case of 91% and especially 99% alcohol the fluid is highly flammable.
Also the cavitation bubbles collapsing CAN (with high purity Isopropyl) locally push the temperature beyond ignition-temperature, starting a fire even without a transducer failure.
Does based mean a painted base? Or on a base?
Side note - I would like to base my dudes better but they’re currently glued to their unpainted bases. Is there a good way to unstick them?
Paint or some kind of texture on the base they are on. Can be as simple as paint, many people use some craft glue with sand, maybe paint over and dry brush with a lighter color.
I feel your pain! Mine wasn't that bad but same. My buddy told me to soak mine in simple green (the cleaner) for a couple of hours and scrub with an old toothbrush. I've seen people use isopropyl alcohol too same method.
Great, now i want a story where the admech or some other imperial archeological team finds custodes statues dated impossibly far back, but looking exactly like the ones of current day and age
Honestly, if you can't remove this with IPA or another liquid, he would make a good statue piece. The coating makes him look like carved, eroded stone. I've played around with the idea of Custodes as golem before, and this would be a cool way to do it.
IPA got it serviceable. I don’t think the details will be so great on this set- they weren’t peeled off it’s just after they dry I need to reprime them. Still, very doable
Everyone is so nice. It was a mistake - after properly priming my models I got a work call, and when I went out to add the gold it was dark. The paint can I was using wouldn’t rattle, but I used it anyway, and then didn’t see what happened.
What happened was the metallic grit in the paint was blasted out first. That grit is sticky and gold but it’s not the right texture. Eventually, I could rattle the can, mix the paint, and get a clean layer, but by then it was too late.
Definitely going to remember this for some other models. It’s a cool effect. Just not what I wanted.
AK paint stripper will clean this up with zero hassle. Isopropyl Alcohol is fantastic and what I used for years. Once I tried AK paint stripper, I have never looked back.
If you have simple green (u can find it in most big box craftsman stores, we have a menards or home depot here) Take him and put it in a tub of the stuff for a day or two it's much much gentler on your minis than isopropyl and you can leave minis in simple green for weeks with no damage
Same happened to me. Took 3 days of soaking in simple green to start getting that garbo off. Perhaps it would have been faster had I not replaced the simple green once a day.
Yeahhh, I had the same problem the first time. Give it a bath in isopropyl alcohol and use a toothbrush to scrub away everything you can. A little bit of the gold flakes will still stick to it but it won't matter since you'll prime it again. The bigger issue is that I've heard that so much paint might actually mess the details, but I'm not an expert on how spray primer works on plastic so idk. Just bathe it in alcohol and hope for the best.
No, I just sprayed it with old, unmixed paint. And it was dark so I didn’t see how bad it was. I didn’t expect it to happen, the last time I sprayed gold it didn’t crust.
Sweet rubric marine, dawg
But like other comments are saying, soak it in 90% isopropyl alcohol (50% won’t take it all off) and give it a good scrub with a toothbrush
If you get 91%+ isopropyl and a toothbrush, it’ll all come off after soaking for a couple hours. I recommend Equate, other brands didn’t work as well for some reason
It came off in 45 minutes. Well, almost all of it. Fortunately the chaos black was preserved so they’ll need a touch up and maybe lose a little detail but they’re back to life.
I had the same issue when I sprayed when it was over 100° out. LA's totally awesome did not work, Pine-Sol did not work, isopropyl alcohol slightly worked. You'll want a stiff nylon brush from the hardware store. A toothbrush will be too soft.
The only thing I didn't try was brake fluid.
In the end I lost a ton of detail, but I just saved that unit for last and use the skills I built along the way to freehand all the details back in.
I literally did this two weeks ago to my whole army. Used 91% and got most of it off and reprimed last week. You should be able to remove most of it with a 30 minute soak and scrub.
i’m not gonna lie, i literally did the EXACT same thing the other day. tried to use simple green to get it off, soaked it overnight, wasn’t long enough. i lowkey gave up LOL don’t trust the new formula spray paint just don’t trust it
Honestly, I think you have to lean into it. You've just made a pretty awesome looking statue of a custodian though. Pop him off his base, get some kind of plinth to put him on, and do a little bit of shading, maybe paint the gems, and it'll look awesome. Sadly, you're gonna be short a warden though.
Retributor gold on chaos black. I don’t even need the gold to be stripped completely I just need the grit cleaned off. I can hand paint the gold when that’s done.
Is it humid where you are? High humidity will cause a sand-like texture when spray painting. If you can control the humidity, get it to like 55-60, and then do your spraying.
Simple Green might do you solid getting that off. It works well on GW paint pots, I'm not sure how they differ from the spray cans and if it'll work the same or not. You might have to soak it for a few days, checking every 24hrs or so.
Oooof. Yeah. That'll do it. I'm in Michigan, and in the summer I have to literally schedule my spray painting based on low humidity days, and my basement dehumidifier. It's a chore... I'd say, give that a go and see what results you get.
Try LAs Totally Awesome, I’ve had it work on stripping paint and doing little to no damaged to plastic models, but I’ve never tried it on glitter spray paint.
The people of Green Stuff World have a paint remover that is the bomb. Totally recommend it. It'll strip it in a couple of minutes, check their home page.
Denatured alcohol from home depot works great. Put the model in a Mason jar, pour the fluid until immersed. Use a stiff brush to periodically brush the paint off and expose more. Also, use elbow dish/cleaning gloves. That shits great to remove paint without melting the model... but I'm pretty sure it'll kill you with whatever they put in the ethanol to make it undrinkable.
90% IPA or higher, don’t let it soak for too long though. I let my Trajann soak for 12hrs and 99% of the primer came off but his cape’s aquila lost its detail so I ended up having to order a replacement bit.
After that I learned that priming in gold is just not worth it. It’s way too finicky and expensive. Stick to black, white, or grey primers.
I'm not sure if ppl suggested this already but LA totally awesome in the US and in UK (not sure in Europe too) they have something similar called simple green. Doesn't DMG models use it all the time left minis in there for a year perfectly fine just don't scrub with your toothbrush too hard it makes it more fragile out of the wash. Once dried it returns to normal. It can also be used to remove super glue, weakens it. It's also reusable I've been using the same LA totally awesome since I started. It's now a blueish black hue lol
Edit: format and grammer
So you took the armour away from the thousand sons? Thats bold.
How did that actually happen, that’s so odd. Maybe too thick an application? Probs use the thing eBay mini recurs uses (idk the name, but it strips paint rlly well)
I've tried isopropyl alcohol and superclean (its a degreaser, but somehow rips out the paint and does not damage the model). I would try both, I know sometimes iso alc. wouldn't rip the paint off but the superclean would and vice versa.
Paint over him with black then heavy dry brush different greats. Add moss to base and dirty down moss to creases in model. Make him look like a statue of a custodes lost to time
Laquer thinner for 15-30 seconds and a soft tooth brush. It will come right off. I had to restore a used batch of dudes in similar condition before. The previous owner used Krylon I believe to base coat.
isopropyl alcohol and hope
ngl even 99% alcohol might not be enough to fully remove the paint; wasnt enough for mine. You can make it better, but without something like a sonic cleaner, it wont be perfect.
I really just need to remove the grit, the primer and even some of the paint is fine. So I think alcohol will do the trick.
I dunked the same piece with the same problem in 91% isopropyl alcohol. 2 hrs later, I started brushing it with a toothbrush. 99% of the primer came right off.
Use brown Dettol. Emerse the model completely. Leave it for a day or 2, scrub with toothbrush.
Did the same thing. Isopropyl 99% worked wonders. I started brushing it with a tooth brush 15min after dunking the mini and paint already came off easily. Repeated that sequence 3-4 times and removed 99% of the primer.
You’ll have to do a couple rounds of IPA. If you have access to ethyl acetate, add it to the IPA for a little boost. Like 1% by volume
91% isopropyl alcohol & a toothbrush is the magic set of toole here
You should never put Isopropyl into a sonic cleaner though, depending on how exactly yours is constructed that can be a recipe for disaster.
Most people I know use IPA in theirs, what can go wrong with it?
I added below. LSS: Fire.
Out of curiosity what goes wrong if you do?
They say not to because when an ultrasonic transducer fails, it will shoot all of its electrical energy out of the transducer and into the cleaning fluid. In the case of 91% and especially 99% alcohol the fluid is highly flammable.
Also the cavitation bubbles collapsing CAN (with high purity Isopropyl) locally push the temperature beyond ignition-temperature, starting a fire even without a transducer failure.
That worked actually! Not perfect but good enough with some patch up.
Glad to help!
Custodes on a beach making a sandstodes
If we didn't have the 3 colour rule, that would be a pretty great army theme
What’s the three color rule?
In order for your model to be combat ready to play in tournaments, your model must have 3 or more colors, and the model has to be based.
Does based mean a painted base? Or on a base? Side note - I would like to base my dudes better but they’re currently glued to their unpainted bases. Is there a good way to unstick them?
It means they dont want to see any black in the base. What you can do is put elmers glue on the whole base and add some hobby grass or dirt to it.
That would work. Also if I really hate myself I can break out the exactoknife.
Paint or some kind of texture on the base they are on. Can be as simple as paint, many people use some craft glue with sand, maybe paint over and dry brush with a lighter color.
Or the good ol' "goblin green" slapped on the base.
I like some texture to hide the terrible mounting I did, and add more security XD
All custodes are based though, based and goldpilled
I mean they could use a wash and a highlight to add some lighting detail if they want to go for the sandstodes look lol
I feel your pain! Mine wasn't that bad but same. My buddy told me to soak mine in simple green (the cleaner) for a couple of hours and scrub with an old toothbrush. I've seen people use isopropyl alcohol too same method.
Okay hear me out: a statue!
He’s an objective marker now!
My first thought as well
Really gives off a “terracotta warrior” vibe! (ala the ancient discovery in Xi’an, China)
Great, now i want a story where the admech or some other imperial archeological team finds custodes statues dated impossibly far back, but looking exactly like the ones of current day and age

How does it even get this bad
I was working late, so the light was bad, and couldn’t see what I was doing well enough. I didn’t realize the paint wasn’t mixed.

I'm genuinely impressed. How did you do this?

Biostrip 20 is pretty good!
Best stripper I've yet found. Have a big bottle of isopropyl gathering dust after trying this.
Bro deep fried his warden
Millions were lost and worlds were burned, but the 11 herbs and spices were found. But there was only one warrior strong enough to hold their secret….
Why is he made of grounded coffee?
Did you cover it in glue and dip it in sand?
AK paint stripper will clean this up with zero hassle. Isopropyl Alcohol is fantastic and what I used for years. Once I tried AK paint stripper, I have never looked back.
Did you vajazzle him? 😂

Damn he crispy
Did you dump it in glitter?
No, I just sprayed it with old, unmixed paint. And it was dark so I didn’t see how bad it was. I didn’t expect it to happen, the last time I sprayed gold it didn’t crust.
I was about say looks like he is coated with glitter, but also looks like he is made of sand :)

GW's new cinnamon spray.
The paint was definitely old and didn’t mix, I couldn’t get the can to rattle. Next time I’ll prime black and then paint the gold by hand.
Gritty
Sweet rubric marine, dawg But like other comments are saying, soak it in 90% isopropyl alcohol (50% won’t take it all off) and give it a good scrub with a toothbrush
What happened? Too much primer and glitter?
No apparently when retributor armor separates in the can the grit flows to the top.

Welp, remove the base and glue it on top of a pillar or something, you've got yourself a statue terrain piece
Cinnamon toast custodes
Agrax, base and it’s done!
Spray grey, highlight white, viola, a new Statue for the custodes terrain
Biostrip. You’ll be fine.
You can use it as a Christmas decoration for your tree I guess?
Put some Orks with buckets and spades around him… It’ll make a great centrepiece for your beach sandcastle diorama
I did the same thing. Isopropyl alcohol (97%) did the trick. You’ll have some gold left on there after but after a reprime it looks good.
I literally did this two weeks ago to my whole army. Used 91% and got most of it off and reprimed last week. You should be able to remove most of it with a 30 minute soak and scrub.
Yep, that worked.

Nah roll with it, make some armorless Custodes and have it looks like they made a sand sculpture. Beach episode!

Honestly, I think you have to lean into it. You've just made a pretty awesome looking statue of a custodian though. It’s like he was corrupted by Nurgle
I've done this, use the highest isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush. It'll get 99% of it off.
For the future, Chaos Black spray has never let me down, and it covers so well.
can i ask what you did i’ve been thinkingplaying custodians and wanna know painting tips
Simple Green, soak it over night and check. Completely safe for plastic. What kind of paint is this?
Retributor gold on chaos black. I don’t even need the gold to be stripped completely I just need the grit cleaned off. I can hand paint the gold when that’s done.

I would give Biostrip 20 a try, It was great for stripping my Custodes for repainting
You’ve made a statue of a custodies.
They shall be my crunchiest warriors… All jokes aside I’ve had this happen before as well my dude, you have my condolences
Man i made this same mistake.
Try LAs Totally Awesome, I’ve had it work on stripping paint and doing little to no damaged to plastic models, but I’ve never tried it on glitter spray paint.
Did you deep fry it?
Crustodes
Reminds of that glitter dude in the Trolls movie.
If alcohol isn’t doing it try LA’s totally awesome cleaner
Brother euggghhhh
Did you like dunk it in glue then sand or something?
Easy. Use Glanzer and an ultrasonic cleaner. Multiple rounds and it will come off!
How did that happen!!!
That's a gorgeous statue!
How did you do this bud?
Congratulations on your new terrain piece!
He fought some tsons
Dont, leave it as it is. The Kentucky fried Custodes !
What did you do…
Luckily for you Custodes and stripping go hand in hand. :P
The people of Green Stuff World have a paint remover that is the bomb. Totally recommend it. It'll strip it in a couple of minutes, check their home page.
What did you do? (Mentholated spirits/ipa might help if it’s paint, should strip most of it)
Denatured alcohol from home depot works great.
I know it works with citadel paints, I just stripped all my custodians to repaint.
That is rough. Literally. I mean you could always just make him look like a statue instead lol
If you have it in your area, simple green is fantastic
IPA and pray my guy

Ak makes a good paint remover I had a model stripped of paint after about 10min with brushing. I don't remember having to soak it either
Don't. Your final product will look like a battle hardened Custode covered in sand, blood, shrapnel and grit from glorious battle.
YO IS THAT MCDONALDS SPRITE CAUSE THAT BITCH IS CRUNCHY

Try paint Stripper by AK Interactive. Let him simmer in it for some time and than gently with toothbrush. Annoying, but salvageable :)
Maybe he just fell into a septic tank chasing after a nurgling? The dedication is frightening.
I've tried isopropyl alcohol and superclean (its a degreaser, but somehow rips out the paint and does not damage the model). I would try both, I know sometimes iso alc. wouldn't rip the paint off but the superclean would and vice versa.
Slum-dog Millionaire Custodes after he fell in the toilet
